Mackenzie Davis in Talks to Join Matt Damon in THE MARTIAN; Jack Huston Lands BEN-HUR Lead

by     Posted 97 days ago

Matt Damon is getting some company in the sci-fi survival film The MartianThe Wrap reports that Halt and Catch Fire star Mackenzie Davis is in talks to join director Ridley Scott’s next film in a “small but crucial role”.  Scripted by Drew Goddard based on an e-book by Andy Weir, Damon stars as an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars and must figure out how to return home.  Jessica Chastain is set to co-star in the pic in another unspecified role, but one imagines Damon will hold most of the screentime by himself.  Davis has proven to be a formidable talent to watch in films like Breathe In and most recently the romantic comedy What If, and The Martian is certainly her highest profile role to date.

In addition to The Martian, The Wrap notes that Davis is currently filming Anna Axster’s indie A Country Called Home and is set to star in Sophia Takal’s psychological thriller Always Shine.  She’s also set to return for season two of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, so her schedule is filling up quite nicely.  Hit the jump to find out who landed the lead role in MGM’s Ben-Hur remake.

Exclusive: Joaquin Phoenix in Final Talks to Lead DOCTOR STRANGE

Given the cloud of secrecy that surrounds each and every Marvel Studios property while in development, there are bound to be unconfirmed rumors about almost every major aspect of their upcoming films—particularly in the casting department.  The studio is currently filling out its Phase Three slate, and while Ant-Man is the first film out of the gate in July 2015 followed by Captain America 3 in May 2016, we then have the Doctor Strange movie on July 8, 2016.  Marvel recently signed Scott Derrickson to direct the mystical comics adaptation, and in keeping with the rumor tradition, speculation has run rampant as to who will fill the title role.

After rounds of shortlists and cryptic comments with regards to who will inhabit the character, the trades reported in mid-July that Joaquin Phoenix was finally in negotiations to star in the film.  It’s been over a month since that time and there still hasn’t been confirmation from Marvel’s end, so the speculation machine kicked up again recently with word going around that Jack Huston is now “under consideration” for the part.  However, we’re hearing there’s absolutely no truth to that rumor, as Phoenix’s deal is currently being finalized.  More after the jump.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS Blu-ray Review

Telling the true story of someone’s life in a film is a difficult task.  The trappings of the biopic genre become glaringly apparent when filmmakers try to chronicle an entire life in a two-hour film.  There are innumerable events over the course of a person’s lifespan that alter him or her, for better or worse, and humans are always undergoing change.  Trying to discern which events are most important is a futile effort, and more often than not, the cradle-to-grave biopic results in a droll feature.  However, when the filmmaker focuses on a constrained period of time in a person’s life and frames an entire film around that, the results can be fascinating.  Such is the case with writer/director John Krokidas’ drama Kill Your Darlings, which chronicles the early college years of poet Allen Ginsberg and the beginnings of the Beat movement, using that as a springboard to explore themes of rebellion, obsession, and self-discovery.

The result is an ambitious, bombastic debut feature for Krokidas, buoyed by a pair of fearless performances from Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan.  My full Kill Your Darlings Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

Opening this week in limited release is director John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings.  The film focuses on the origins of the Beat movement and follows the volatile friendships of Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston), William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).  There’s also a murder wrapped in between the lines. Kill Your Darlings also stars Michael C. Hall, David CrossKyra SedgwickJennifer Jason Leigh, and Elizabeth Olsen.  I caught the pic at Sundance and it was one of my favorites of the festival.  In addition, the entire cast was fantastic and Krokidas announces himself as a serious talent to watch.  For more on the film, read Matt’s review or read all of our previous coverage.

At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival I landed an exclusive video interview with Jack Huston.  He talked about what it’s like to be part of a famous filmmaking family and still earn recognition on his own terms, the difficult process of shooting Kill Your Darlings that gives the movie an extra spark, how he prepared to play Kerouac at this stage in his life, his character’s arc on Boardwalk Empire, American Hustle and the unusual way they shot the film, upcoming projects including an Errol Flynn biopic and a production of Strangers on a Train in London, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

KILL YOUR DARLINGS Review

by     Posted 1 year, 67 days ago

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.  Kill Your Darlings opens today in limited release.]

If poetry doesn’t broaden our view of our world and force us to push the boundaries of our lives, then it’s pointless. Poetry cannot always tap into the chaos and beauty of life if it must be constrained by meter, verse, and rules set down centuries ago. Poetry, when wielded by genius, can seduce, defend, condemn, and most importantly, transform. Words are powerful enough to change the world, but even in the hands of the most gifted writers, they can be futile against our frailties, insecurities, and desires. In his magnificent debut feature, director and co-writer John Krokidas has created a moving, exhilarating, and heartbreaking film in Kill Your Darlings. Led by breathtaking performances by stars Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, and Ben Foster, Kill Your Darlings watches the greatest writers of a generation push the boundaries of modern American culture only to find that even the best words, the most well-spoken words, the most honest words, can fail when spoken to a shattered heart.

The fourth season of the HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire kicks off on the pay cable network in a little over a month, but in advance of the premiere, HBO has unveiled some images from the new season that give fans a tease of what’s to come.  Regular cast members Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon, Kelly Macdonald, Michael K. NOT FADE AWAY Blu-ray Review

not-fade-away-slice

David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, may be respected for giving the world one of the greatest television shows of all time, but when he jumped into feature films with Not Fade Away, he seems to have been allowed to do whatever he wanted, but the finished product was abandoned by its studio (Paramount), who must not have thought it was Oscar material.  That’s too bad as Not Fade Away is a film that feels alive with the possibilities of cinema, but also is aware of the past.  The story of a band that never made it, Chase’s semi-autobiographical tale paints a great portrait of teenagers going through the 1960’s and are swept up in the cultural changes reflected in the music of the era.  My review of the Blu-ray of Not Fade Away follows after the jump.

David O. Russell’s Next Film Gets New Title: AMERICAN HUSTLE

by     Posted 1 year, 251 days ago

Director David O. Russell’s follow-up to last year’s crowdpleasing awards contender Silver Linings Playbook now has a title.  Previously referred to as American Bullshit, the pic is now titled American Hustle per Box Office Mojo.  The story is based on a real-life undercover sting operation called “Abscam”, which was set up in the 1980s by a con artist working for the FBI who rooted out corruption in Congress.  The film boasts an incredible ensemble cast that includes a number of Russell regulars like Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro as well as some exciting Russell newcomers like Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., Michael Pena, and Jack Huston.

Russell is currently in the middle of production on American Hustle in the New York City area, and we’ve already seen a number of wildly entertaining set photos of the cast done up in their 80s garb.  The film opens in limited release on December 13th before going wide on Christmas Day, and it’s safe to assume that American Hustle will be a serious player in this year’s awards race.
