Just over a week after original director Jack Bender (Lost) dropped out of the project, Paramount looks to have found a suitable replacement to helm their reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games). Vulture reports that Kenneth Branagh is now in negotiations to direct the pic, which sees Star Trek’s Chris Pine take over the franchise that has been toplined in the past by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. The project has been in development for quite some time, with a number of writers taking a stab at the screenplay. Paramount is hoping to finally get cameras rolling later this year once Pine wraps the Star Trek sequel, and having a director onboard is a fairly crucial necessity to make that happen. Hit the jump to find out what the hold up has been.

LOST Director Jack Bender No Longer Attached to Helm Jack Ryan Reboot Starring Chris Pine

The long-in-the-works reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games) has hit yet another snag. Chris Pine landed the lead in the film way back in 2009, then Lost director/executive producer Jack Bender came aboard to helm the film later the next year. Movement on the project was quiet for some time after Bender signed on, then the film went through a series of rewrites. David Koepp was most recently brought on to do a polish, but due to the numerous script delays Paramount was forced to let Pine shoot J.J. AbramsStar Trek sequel first. The latest issue plaguing the production is a biggie: Bender is no longer the director. Hit the jump for more.

Script Delays Motivate Paramount to Swap Jack Ryan Reboot with STAR TREK 2 on Chris Pine’s Schedule

Paramount Pictures is hard at work trying to reboot the Jack Ryan franchise with Chris Pine at the center.  The most recent effort brought Steve Zaillian (American Gangster) on board to rewrite the script.  However, Zaillian had a “change of heart” in recent weeks and withdrew from the project.  Paramount has begun interviewing new writers, but the departure sets off a noteworthy ripple.

The original plan was to get the Jack Ryan reboot (formerly titled Moscow) in the can before Pine filmed Star Trek 2.  Given the scripting hiccup, the studio will put a pin in Jack Ryan’s return to the big screen to keep Star Trek 2 on track.  The sci-fi sequel is expected to commence production this fall with eyes to a June 29, 2012 release date.  More after the break:

Alec Baldwin Explains Why He Never Played Jack Ryan Again After THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER

In Moscow, Chris Pine will be the fourth actor to assume the role of Jack Ryan in just five movies.  He follows in the footsteps of Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), and Alec Baldwin, who originated the role on screen in 1990′s The Hunt for Red October.  How did we get here?  Why wasn’t Baldwin awarded a Bond-style run of films?

Baldwin would have liked to return for at least one more Jack Ryan film, but the negotiations to facilitate that return became heated and eventually fell apart.  Baldwin revealed in a recent blog post just how things went down, including a few vicious words directed to the studio executive who made it (not) happen: David Kirkpatrick.  (A taste: “Kirkpatrick was a beady-eyed, untalented tool…”)  Details after the break:

Steve Zaillian to Re-Write Jack Ryan Reboot Starring Chris Pine

Screenwriter Steve Zaillian (American Gangster) is set to re-write the script for the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot starring Chris Pine.  According to Deadline, the film (previously titled Moscow) is not based on any of author Tom Clancy’s previous books.  When we last heard about the film, it was reported that the plot would have Ryan working as an analyst for a Russian billionaire but having to go on the run after being implicated in a terrorist plot. Paramount hopes to start production on the film later this year with Lost director Jack Bender at the helm.  Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

Zaillian previously wrote the screenplay for the Jack Ryan film Clear and Present Danger starring Harrison Ford.  Zaillian recently penned the scripts for Moneyball and David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  He was also recently hired to rewrite the remake the thriller Timecrimes.

Chris Pine Talks Jack Ryan Reboot MOSCOW

Chris Pine isn’t afraid to take over established characters and give them his own twist. He first took on Captain James Tiberius Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot (of sorts) in 2009, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is next.  If you’re unfamiliar with the character, Ryan has previously been at the center of The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears, with Pine set to make a turn as Ryan in the upcoming reboot Moscow.

Helming Moscow is Lost alumni Jack Bender, with Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham tweaking the script. In the film, Pine will play Ryan as a young military operative who “goes to work as an analyst for a Russian billionaire, but winds up on the run after being implicated in a terrorist plot.”  To find out what Pine had to say about the film and taking over yet another established character, hit the jump.

LOST Director Jack Bender to Helm Next Movie in the Jack Ryan Franchise, MOSCOW

Jack Ryan, hero of numerous Tom Clancy novels, has a director for his next adventure.  Vulture reports that Jack Bender is “a cat’s breath away” from directing Moscow, the next installment in the Jack Ryan franchise.  In the new film, Ryan (played by Chris Pine, who I think is a great choice for the role), is “fresh-from-the-Marines and goes to work as an analyst for a Russian billionaire, but winds up on the run after being implicated in a terrorist plot.”  As we reported in April, Ryan is a Wall Street broker at the beginning of the film and (spoiler alert) eventually he has to save his wife as she’s been taken hostage by the billionaire.  However, it’s possible that since April these particular elements have either been changed or removed entirely.

Bender directed some of Lost‘s most popular episodes including “Walkabout”, “The Constant”, and the finales for each of the show’s six seasons (he also directed the all the season premieres except for the pilot and season five).  Vulture notes the fun fact that Bender is also a painter and was responsible for the Desmond’s expressionist mural inside the hatch.

Exclusive: Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on TRANSFORMERS 3, RED, the Next Jack Ryan Movie MOSCOW, THE ASSOCIATE

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura TRANSFORMERS 3, RED slice

Yesterday I caught up with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to talk about his upcoming action thriller Salt that stars Angelina Jolie. While I’ll be posting the full transcript very soon, since I got some brief updates on Transformers 3, Red, the next Jack Ryan movie Moscow and The Associate (which Shia Labeouf’s attached to), I wanted to get those quotes online tonight.

Regarding Transformers 3, he talked about how to keep the franchise fresh on a 3rd movie and he also talked about Michael Bay shooting in 3D.  On Red, he talked about where they are right now in the editing room and he says, “the movie has more tones and colors that almost any movie I’ve ever worked on.” Finally, I asked him what projects are bubbling up to the surface and he said the next Jack Ryan movie, Moscow, that Chris Pine is attached to and The Associate – which is a John Grisham book that Shia Labeouf’s attached to. When I asked how the script was for the Jack Ryan movie, he said they had a great one and he is hoping to start shooting late winter/early spring.

Hit the jump to read everything he had to say on these projects and look for more with di Bonaventura very soon.

Details on the New Jack Ryan Movie – Working Title is MOSCOW

by Andrew Robinson    Posted: April 11th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Jack Ryan will be returning under the working title Moscow in the new chapter of the franchise that has Chris Pine set to star.  As you can guess from the title, the film will be set in Russia.  According to Pajiba, Adam Cozad (an unknown writer) has been brought in to rework Hossein Amini’s (The Four Feathers) original draft.  Pajiba went on to give us some updates on the plot:

We’ll be meeting up with Jack Ryan shortly after he leaves the Marines, but before he joins to CIA.  When we first meet him, he’s a Wall Street broker.  As opposed to the books by Tom Clancy (which had him working as a financial analyst in Baltimore) he’ll be a financial advisor in Moscow for some billionaire employer.  It’s this new boss that will eventually set up Ryan as the fall guy for a terrorist plot that aims to destroy the U.S. economy.  This is when the adventure begins as Ryan must clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife as she’s been taken hostage by the billionaire.

Producer Mace Neufeld Talks Next Jack Ryan Film Starring Chris Pine

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 4th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

slice_chris_pine_mace_neufeld_01.jpg

Producer Mace Neufeld, who has been with the Jack Ryan series since The Hunt for Red October, provided an update on the status of the next entry in the franchise to Steve who is at the press junket today for the upcoming Clint Eastwood film Invictus starring Matt Damon.  Set to Star Chris Pine as the 4th Mr. Ryan (following Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck), Neufeld said that while the story will skew young for Pine, it will not be an origin story.

According to Neufeld, the story picks up with Ryan on Wall Street (the home of all great heroes!) although he didn’t elaborate beyond that point.  Neufeld did point out that what separates the Jack Ryan franchise from most others is that “they’re kind of thinking man’s thrillers,” and Ryan’s skills is in seeing ahead three steps to reach conclusions before everybody else.  Hopefully that will translate into an exciting film and will show others (*cough*Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons*cough*) how it’s done.

Captain Kirk May Kill Terrorists; Chris Pine in Talks to Play the New Jack Ryan

If Robert Downey Jr. has taught us anything, it’s that no actor should be trapped by just one franchise.  An actor can be the star of any series that will likely require a three-picture deal and that doesn’t mean they won’t get to do any smaller projects.  Through the magic of cloning, any actor can be in at least three or four major movies every year.  Chris Pine has apparently discovered this cloning as he is in talks to star in Paramount’s attempt to once again reboot Tom Clancy’s “Jack Ryan” franchise.  Hit the jump to boldly go where no one has gone before AND save America from freedom-haters.

Exclusive: Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talks G.I. JOE, Jack Ryan, Red and ASTEROIDS

Lorenzo de Bonaventura G.I. Joe movie image.jpg

A few days ago I attended the New York City press junket for “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. While there, I got to speak with some of the cast, director Stephen Sommers and producer Lorenzo de Bonaventura. While I’ve already spoken to Lorenzo a lot about “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers“, you can never go wrong asking a few more questions as he producers a lot of other movies.

So after the first few questions on “G.I. Joe” and “Giant Robots That Like to Punch Each Other in the Face”, I asked him about some of his upcoming projects and he told me the status on Jack Ryan, “Red”, and also why he wanted to make an “Asteroids” movie. Take a look after the jump:

Exclusive – Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talks G.I. JOE THE RISE OF COBRA – Says the Film is 1 Hour 47 Minutes

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: June 23rd, 2009 at 10:35 pm

lorenzo_di_bonaventura__1_.jpgYesterday I posted the first part of my exclusive interview with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and after the jump is part two. In this part, Lorenzo and I discussed “G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra”, what’s up with “Beverly Hills Cop 4″ and Jack Ryan, and he told me all about a project called “Red” – which sounded like it’s getting ready to move forward.

The big news on “G.I. Joe” is the film is 1 hour and 47 minutes. He also said since the movie comes out so close to Comic-Con, don’t expect to see too much footage there. He also talked about why people should be excited to see it.

Regarding “Beverly Hills Cop 4″ and Jack Ryan, it’s all about the scripts…which aren’t ready to go yet.

Finally we talked about a project he has at Summit called “Red”. The film is based on the Warren Ellis graphic novel and it’s about an over the hill gang of CIA agents that have been put out to pasture and a situation occurs that brings back the gang. Lorenzo compares it to “Oceans 11″ and “Sneakers”.

For more on all the projects, you can watch the interview after the jump. Take a look:
