Ewan-McGregor-Salmon-Fishing-in-the-Yemen-interview-slice

With director Lasse Hallstrom‘s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen opening today in limited release, earlier this week the cast was in Los Angeles and I was able to land an exclusive interview with Ewan McGregor.   Since I knew we were going to run a roundtable interview with McGregor and Emily Blunt that covered all the usual stuff, when I sat down for my interview I decided to ask a lot of fan questions that were sent to me on Twitter.

During the interview (which McGregor let me film on my flip cam) we talked about HBO’s series The Corrections (he just filmed the pilot and if it gets picked up it’ll be the first TV show he’s ever done), what drew him to Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and how it sets itself apart from average romantic comedy fare, and Twitter (which I think I convinced him to sign up for).  In addition, thanks to my followers on Twitter, I asked him if he will do a Broadway musical in the near future, if he would be willing to play a James Bond villain, if he’ll work with Danny Boyle again, whether or not there’s a comic book character that he would like to play, and what’s up with the release date of Jack the Giant Killer.  Hit the jump to watch.

Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN Interview

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is an unlikely movie on many accounts. First of all, if you don’t know geography, there are no salmon in Yemen rivers. That’s the point of the movie, a Scottish fisheries administrator (Ewan McGregor) is hired by a Sheikh to transplant fish to his river so he can practice fly fishing. There the government scientist strikes up an unlikely romance with the Sheikh’s representative (Emily Blunt). Director Lasse Hallstrom strikes a balance of comedy, drama and romance.

Blunt and McGregor participated in a press day for the film in Los Angeles, joining together for roundtable interviews. The leading man and leading lady flirted generously and cracked up while discussing the film and some upcoming projects, including the fantasy fairy tale Jack the Giant Killer and the sci-fi action thriller LooperSalmon Fishing in the Yemen opens Friday. Warner Bros. Puts ARTHUR & LANCELOT on Hold; Pushes JACK THE GIANT KILLER 3D Back to 2013

Not long after Warner Bros. was reportedly getting cold feet with the swelling budget of David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, it looks like the studio has officially hit the pause button. The film, starring Kit Herington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Darkest Hour) in a reimagined Arthurian legend, was supposed to open March 15, 2013. Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) reportedly informed cast and crew that it “wasn’t looking good,” although studio insiders confirm they’re trying to make the project work. Warner envisions the tone of Arthur & Lancelot to be in a similar vein to their Sherlock Holmes franchise, but will have to negotiate budget and scheduling difficulties. Herington, will return to Game of Thrones this spring while Kinnaman is expected to segue into the film shoot after wrapping on AMC’s The Killing. The project may move forward without one or both of the actors. Hit the jump for news regarding the delay of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer 3D and Rock of Ages.

Ewan McGregor Talks HAYWIRE and JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Ewan McGregor HAYWIRE and JACK THE GIANT KLLER interview slice

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening this Friday, I recently got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about making the movie.  Starring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton.  I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic.  On top of Carano’s star-making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years.   It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.

During my interview with McGregor we talked about how he got involved in Haywire, his feelings on not being involved in more of the action scenes, karaoke, does he prefer two takes or fifty, and which of his previous movies do people always want to talk to him about.  In addition, McGregor talked about starring in Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Killer which arrives this summer.  Hit the jump to watch.

First Trailer and Poster for Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 15th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

The first trailer for director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer has gone online. Based on the classic tale, the fantasy pic tells the story of an ancient war that’s reignited when a young boy (Nicholas Hoult) unknowingly opens a gate between the world of the humans and the world of the giants. We don’t see much here, as it plays out very much like a teaser trailer, but I like the feel of it and it sure is nice to see Singer back doing big action set pieces. Ewan McGregor is the epitome of cool, and Hoult seems a fine choice to play the reluctant hero. Overall, I like the tone and the look of everything, but there’s not enough here to gauge whether or not Singer’s got himself a winner. I’m really looking forward to seeing those giants though.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Eleanor Thomas, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Killer opens in 3D IMAX on June 15th, 2012.

Bill Nighy Talks ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, WRATH OF THE TITANS, TOTAL RECALL, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, More

by Christina Radish    Posted: November 21st, 2011 at 5:27 pm

In the animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, actor Bill Nighy voices the rather naughty Grandsanta. Upon his retirement, his lovely old sleigh and all of the reindeer who guided it were put out to pasture, in favor of an ultra-high-tech operation that allows for 18.14 seconds to get into each house, deliver the presents, and move on to the next, for the hundreds of millions of children in the world. So, when Santa’s (Jim Broadbent) youngest son, Arthur (James McAvoy), discovers that one child has been missed, he sets out on a mission, with the help of Grandsanta and a giftwrapping-obsessed elf (Ashley Jensen), to get that last present delivered before Christmas morning dawns.

During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, the fantastically lovely Bill Nighy talked about at first thinking he was being asked to play Santa and then realizing what a great character Grandsanta was, navigating voice roles by what he doesn’t want the character to sound like to make sure it’s unique, and how he’s so low-tech that he doesn’t own a computer and only recently was talked into getting an iPhone. He also talked about playing a 22-foot tall giant who eats people in Jack the Giant Killer, playing Hephaestus (the armorer to the Gods) in Wrath of the Titans, his trust in Len Wiseman as a storyteller for the remake of Total Recall (he plays Kuato in the film), his fear of harming Dame Judy Dench while driving her around on a motorcycle for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, making two more films with the Johnny Worricker character from David Hare’s Page Eight, finally getting the call to be a part of the Harry Potter franchise, and getting stopped all the time by fans who love his work in both Shaun of the Dead and Love, Actually. Bill Nighy Talks JACK THE GIANT KILLER, WRATH OF THE TITANS and TOTAL RECALL

by Christina Radish    Posted: November 14th, 2011 at 7:50 pm

The 3D, CG-animated family comedy Arthur Christmas finally answers the curious question of how Santa Claus delivers presents to every child around the world, in just one night. Earlier today, Collider had the opportunity to speak with ultra-talented British actor Bill Nighy, who voices the naughty Grandsanta, a crotchety 136-year-old that has been put out to pasture, along with his old-fashioned, classic Christmas traditions. While we will run that portion of the interview closer to the film’s November 23rd release date, we wanted to share what he had to say about some of the highly anticipated projects he has for 2012.

During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, Bill Nighy talked about playing a 22-foot tall giant who eats people in Jack the Giant Killer, how much he enjoyed working with director Bryan Singer, and how difficult it is to keep a straight face while looking ridiculous in a motion capture suit. He also talked about playing Hephaestus, the armorer to the Gods, in Clash of the Titans 2, and his trust in Len Wiseman as a storyteller, for the remake of Total Recall, in which he plays Kuato. Warwick Davis Talks HARRY POTTER, STAR WARS, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, His Ricky Gervais Series LIFE’S TOO SHORT, and More

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 11th, 2011 at 9:02 pm

While Warwick Davis is a name you might not instantly recognize, I can assure you you’ve seen his work. His career began as the Ewok “Wicket” in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, after which he starred in such films as Labyrinth, Willow, the Leprechaun series, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and of course Harry Potter. In the wizarding franchise, Davis played two characters: Professor Flitwick and Griphook. Steve is currently in sunny Orlando at Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, and he got the chance to sit down with Davis for an extended interview earlier today.

The actor spoke about his impressions of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, getting recognized in the street, the evolution of make-up effects over the years, what props he’s been able to keep from various films, Bryan Singer’s big-budget Jack the Giant Killer, his hilarious new TV series Life’s Too Short with Ricky Gervais, and of course the lasting legacy of the Harry Potter franchise. WRATH OF THE TITANS, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, and Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY May Open in IMAX

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 21st, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Warner Bros. looks to be continuing their successful run of films in the IMAX format with three of their high profile 2012 releases. Wrath of the Titans, Jack the Giant Killer, and Gravity are all reportedly set to be released in IMAX. Wrath of the Titans is, of course, the sequel to 2010’s Clash of the Titans. The Jonathan Liebesman-helmed sequel stars Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Killer is the epic fantasy from director Bryan Singer that tells the story of a young farmhand who unknowingly opens a gateway between our world and the world of the giants. That film stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Ewan McGregor.

Finally, Gravity is the highly anticipated sci-fi pic from visionary director Alfonso Cuaron. Plot details are scarce, but it presumably centers on an astronaut trying to return to Earth following a disaster in space. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star. Personally, I can’t wait to see Cuaron’s film in the pristine quality IMAX format. Coming Soon’s report states that all three films will be released in 3D, although Jack the Giant Killer wasn’t conceived in the format. Wrath of the Titans opens on March 30th, Jack the Giant Killer hits theaters on June 15th, and Gravity is slated for November 21st.

Ewan McGregor Interview BEGINNERS

by Christina Radish    Posted: June 2nd, 2011 at 8:52 pm

In Beginners, actor Ewan McGregor plays Oliver, a man attempting to redefine his own life through his grief. When he meets the unpredictable Anna (Melanie Laurent), he is flooded with memories of the father (Christopher Plummer) who came out of the closet at the age of 75, after the death of his wife of 45 years, and learns to appreciate that honesty while questioning what he thought he knew of his childhood. Prior to his death from cancer five years later, that new gay life brought father and son closer than they’d ever been, teaching Oliver that love could only truly be found through bravery, humor and hope.

At the film’s press day, Ewan McGregor talked about how much he enjoyed working with his co-stars, including the adorable canine that played his dad’s dog, how he loved the dichotomy of these two love stories – between man and woman, and father and son – wanting to get a feel for writer/director Mike Mills since this was such a personal story for him, and how he really hopes that audiences will go see this beautiful piece of filmmaking. He also talked about how he’s currently filming Jack the Giant Killer for director Bryan Singer. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

The 1980’s rocker musical is set to star Tom Cruise, with a number of actors circling roles for the film including Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Mary J. Ian McShane Joins JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Ian McShane has joined the cast of Jack the Giant Killer, singlehandedly upping the badass quotient 30% on this retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale.  Nicholas Hoults stars as a farm boy who “leads an expedition to free a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) taken hostage by a giant, a situation that threatens the uneasy peace between humans and giants.”  According to Heat Vision, McShane will play King Brahmwell, the princess’ father who disapproves of his daughter’s poor choice in poor men.  Stanley Tucci will play the villain of the film, a scheming adviser to the king.  Ewan McGregor is set as the leader of the king’s guard.  Bill Nighy and John Kassir jointly portray the two-headed leader of the giants.  (Super cast, if you ask me.)

Bryan Singer (Valkyrie) will direct from a script by Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).  Neal Moritz (The Green Hornet) and David Dobkin (Fred Claus) will produce.  McShane will next appear as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which opens May 20.
