A little over a week ago, a curious little documentary was announced called Side by Side. The project, spearheaded by Keanu Reeves, features interviews with a number of master filmmakers regarding the film vs. digital debate. Now the first trailer for the film has popped up and Side by Side is officially one of my most anticipated movies of 2012. The trailer showcases Reeves having candid conversations about the death of film (and the advent of 3D) with people like George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and Steven Soderbergh. It looks incredibly intriguing, and I can’t wait to hear today’s foremost filmmakers weigh in on the future of moviemaking.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Side by Side will be released sometime this year.

James Cameron to Present CIRQUE DU SOLEIL Movie Written and Directed by Andrew Adamson

Cirque du Soleil is a unique experience that everyone should see at least once.  Paramount and James Cameron are going to try and make that happen by taking Cirque du Soleil out of the massive tent and bringing it into comparatively tiny theaters.  The film, entitled Cirque du Soleil World Away, will be written and directed by Andrew Adamson (Shrek) and be released in 3D because 3D is immersive and if you’re not immersed then you clearly hate cinema.  Worlds Away will have an original story, and show off the acrobatics and absolutely bizarre tone Cirque has become known for.  Don’t tell your kids, “Oh!  It’s a circus!”  They will be disappointed.  Instead, tell them “We’re going to see a man try to stick his head up his own ass!  In 3D!”

Hit the jump for the full press release.  Cirque du Soleil World Away will be released later this year.

Keanu Reeves Documentary SIDE BY SIDE Tackles Film vs. Digital Debate; Includes Interviews with Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and David Fincher

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 9th, 2012 at 11:10 am

A curious little website has popped up announcing a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves that tackles one of the foremost issues facing filmmakers today: the advent of digital filmmaking. Entitled Side by Side, the documentary takes an in-depth look at the issue of film vs. digital, and “examines all aspects of filmmaking – from capture, to edit, to visual effects, to color correction, to distribution to archive.” Through interviews with numerous well-respected masters of the medium, Side by Side “explores what has been gained, what is lost and what the future might bring.” Take this sample quote from Christopher Nolan:

“No credible source really has been claiming to have invented something that is aesthetically superior to film at this point.”

The documentary will feature Reeves interviewing filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Lana and Andy Wachowski, George Lucas, James Cameron, Steven Soderbergh, and many more. Hit the jump for more details.

New Featurette for TITANIC 3D

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 22nd, 2011 at 12:52 pm

A new featurette for the release of Titanic 3D has been unveiled. Whether you’re a fan of the movie or not, it’s obvious that James Cameron has put an insane amount of work into making sure the 3D re-release is well worth your money. Sadly, this featurette doesn’t give us a look into the actual post-conversion process, but we do get to see a number of pristine looking scenes from the film intercut with Cameron speaking about the film. He explains that before they began with the 3D they went back and cleaned up the picture, so even if you go to see it in 2D it should be pretty damn good-looking.

Steve caught 18 minutes of the 3D footage and he raved about it being the best post-conversion he’s ever seen. The third act of the pic is some of the most intense 40 minutes put to film, so I’m looking forward to having a panic attack while almost drowning in IMAX 3D. Hit the jump to watch the featurette. Titanic 3D opens April 6th, 2012.

First Trailer for James Cameron’s TITANIC 3D

Paramount has released a trailer for James Cameron’s 3D update of his 1997 film Titantic.  I think the verdict is in on this movie, and since the trailer is on my computer, I can’t really comment on the 3D.  However, I was reminded of how much I hate “My Heart Will Go On.”  Click here for what Steve though of the footage he saw last month.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Jonathan Hyde, Victor Garber, Bernard Hill, David Warner, Gloria Stuart, and Bill Paxton.  Titanic opens in 3D on April 6, 2012.  It will also be re-released in 2D.

When James Cameron first announced he’d be post converting Titanic for a 3D re-release in April 2012, I was a bit skeptical.  After all, I think most of us can agree that post converted movies are usually substandard to ones being shot in 3D, and since the movie is 15 years old, I figured it would be an insane challenge to get it right.  However, earlier today I visited Paramount in Hollywood and got to see about 18 minutes of the converted film on the big screen.  So what did I learn?

Never. Ever. Bet against James Cameron.

The footage I saw this morning left me speechless.  I’m not joking around when I say it’s the best post conversion I’ve ever seen and it looks like they originally shot it in 3D back in 1997.  In addition, Cameron told us before they post converted they created a new 4K master and did a full color correction and cleaned the film.  So even if you see the film in 2D or 3D in April, you will not believe how crystal clear the images are and how good the film looks.   However, before you start to think Cameron made any changes to the actual film, he told us they are not editing a single scene.  He’s not pulling a George Lucas.  Hit the jump for more.

Exclusive: Sigourney Weaver Talks ABDUCTION, VAMPS and IT IS WHAT IT IS

by Christina Radish    Posted: September 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 am

The action thriller Abduction tells the story of Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner), a high school teenager who has the uneasy feeling that he’s living someone else’s life. His therapist, Dr. Geri Bennett (Sigourney Weaver), tries to talk him through his intense nightmares, but when he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, he realizes his parents (played by Jason Isaacs and Maria Bello) are not his own and that his entire life is a lie. Targeted by a team of trained killers, he is forced to go on the run with the only person he can trust, his neighbor Karen (Lily Collins), who he’s had a crush on for years.

At the film’s press day, actress Sigourney Weaver spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the fun of playing roles originally written for men, what she enjoys about working with younger actors like co-stars Taylor Lautner and Lily Collins, and that she would be interested in exploring this character more, if there were to be a sequel. She also talked about how fun it is for her to see the ways kick-ass women have evolved in film, what made her want to jump into the vampire genre for Amy Heckerling’s upcoming comedy Vamps, and how her next role will be as a professor of queer theory in a film called It Is What It Is. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 Conflict Prompts Director Justin Lin to Leave TERMINATOR 5

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: September 20th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Although Director Justin Lin (Fast Five) is still enthusiastic about the Terminator reboot, a scheduling conflict has arisen that may temporarily terminate his involvement. The Terminator franchise rights holder, Megan Ellison, is looking to start production on the first of two new installments by the last quarter of 2012. Since Lin’s The Fast and the Furious 6 has a release date of May 2013, his schedule doesn’t jive. However, if Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger can hold off on production until Lin is finished, there’s a chance he may still be involved.

The timeline doesn’t look all that rushed as reports indicate that Ellison has yet to acquire a script or, for that matter, a screenwriter. No studios have signed on though several have expressed interest. However, there is a minor cause for concern: due to a series of legal trickeries and copyright speak, James Cameron will actually regain the rights to the franchise in 2018. Hopefully Ellison and company can get a couple of installments churned out before then. Hit the jump for what you can expect from a Terminator reboot.

Disney to Add AVATAR Attractions to Theme Parks

Did you ever wonder what it would be like form a lifelong telepathic bond with a flying creature only to ditch it for a bigger and more powerful flying creature?  Now you can!  Variety reports that Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide will create themed lands based on James Cameron’s Avatar.  The first theme land will be built at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida.  Cameron, Jon Landau and their Lightstorm Entertainment group will serve as creative consultants on the projects and will work with Disney’s “Imagineers” to oversee the design and development of the different theme lands.  I look forward to “Cramped Trailer with Giant Tanning Beds”-Land.

Construction on the theme lands is scheduled to begin in 2013.  As Cameron preps for two Avatar sequels (set for Christmas 2014 and 2015), Imagineers will use the entire trilogy to create the various theme lands.  No word yet if one of the parks will offer full-body painting or if the gift shops will sell sex ponytails.

Shawn Levy May Drop FANTASTIC VOYAGE If He Can’t Get Will Smith to Star

Back in February, we reported that Shawn Levy was the latest director to board the James Cameron-produced 3D remake of Fantastic Voyage.  The original 1966 film was about a group of scientists who shrink down into a miniature submarine and enter the body of an important diplomat in order to save his life. The new project would be expensive (of course) but could also be a big hit for Fox with James Cameron’s pedigree (look how it worked out for Sanctum!) and Levy’s track record with the studio (the Night at the Museum movies, Cheaper by the Dozen, Date Night).  But Levy wants a big name star and originally was courting his Real Steel leading man Hugh Jackman.

Levy is reportedly getting impatient at the project’s lack of momentum (big budget blockbusters can require time to get off the ground?  Who knew!) and now he wants Will Smith to star…or else.  Hit the jump for more and why this is insane.

Justin Lin Confirms FAST AND FURIOUS 6 As His Next Project, Has Met with Schwarzenegger and Cameron for TERMINATOR

Following the (surprising) critical and (not so surprising) commercial success of Fast Five, director Justin Lin has been mentioned among many director shortlists for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, and recently found himself attached to the next film in the Terminator franchise. While one might surmise that Lin would strike while the iron’s hot and move on to another high profile franchise, looks as though the director’s follow-up to Fast Five will actually be the sixth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise (which just recently got a release date of May 2013).

Terminator fans need not fret though, as Lin is still working on Arnold Schwarzenegger-starred film. In fact, the director just recently met with  Schwarzenegger and James Cameron to talk a bit about the franchise. Hit the jump for more details, including why Lin turned down the directing job of Die Hard 5.

SANCTUM Blu-ray Review

sanctum_movie_image_slice_01

The cover-box for Alister Grierson’s Sanctum trumpets the involvement of James Cameron, the 3D-enthusiast who changed the game a few years ago with Avatar.  Holding the cover box in your hands, you might be inclined to believe that Sanctum was directed by Cameron– that seems to be the implication (or, at the very least, it would be to the type of people that rent Transmorphers thinking they’re getting Transformers)– but a little careful reading reveals that Cameron only executive-produced the film.  You knew that, of course, and I knew that, but what about all the idiots that’ll think Sanctum‘s Cameron’s latest film?  They’re in for a few very-unpleasant surprises.  Read on for our Blu-ray review of Sanctum, after the jump.

James Cameron Shows First Footage of TITANIC 3D at CineEurope

James Cameron likes 3D. He spent years developing/inventing cameras in order to facilitate his vision for his first film since 1997’s box-office monster Titanic. That follow-up was Avatar and it toppled Titanic as the highest grossing film ever. Leading up to and following the release of Avatar, Cameron was everywhere trumpeting 3D as the most important thing for movies in the history of things. The 3D trend caught on, and now Cameron is back with that other worldwide hit Titanic, now in 3D.

The director has been working on converting Titanic to 3D for a while, and the film is poised to be rereleased in theaters April 6th, 2012. The post-conversion process has been painstakingly long, but at the international exhibitor event CineEurope Cameron premiered 15 minutes of a 3D converted Titanic. 20th Century Fox Hoping to Reunite James Cameron and Sam Worthington for Sci-Fi Action Flick MYTH

James Cameron and Sam Worthington are already set to reunite for two sequels to Avatar, but that’s apparently not enough for Fox.  Heat Vision reports that the studio has picked up a pitch from writer Will Staples called Myth, and wants to bring Cameron, Worthington, and Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura together on the film.  However, at this stage, Cameron is only attached to executive producer with di Bonaventura and Worthington attached to produce, although no deals are final.  Cameron would not direct and Worthington hasn’t made a commitment to star.  Nothing is known about Myth other than “it’s big, it’s sci-fi, and it’s got lots of action.”  Riveting.

The talent involved at this stage is still fungible at this point but Staples is attached to write the script.  Staples’ biggest claim to fame at this point is having served as a writer on the popular Call of Duty video game series.  He, along with writing partner Sean O’Keefe, also wrote Apaches for Jerry Bruckheimer and World’s Most Wanted for Neal Moritz.

James Cameron and Michael Bay TRANSFORMERS DARK OF THE MOON sliceDARK

Last week, Steve attended a special presentation that not only included footage from Transformers: Dark of the Moon, but a conversation between directors James Cameron and Michael Bay about 3D.  Video of that conversation is now online and while they do get somewhat technical at points, it’s still interesting to hear what they have to say.

Hit the jump to check out the video.  We’ll all see how well Michael Bay used 3D when Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens June 29th.
