James Franco Enlists Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Jessica Chastain, and More for Poetry Adaptations

By now, we’re all aware that James Franco is a fairly multifaceted fella.  He dips his toe in comedy, drama, short films, experimental films, and higher education.  For his latest project, he’s assembled an impressive cast for two feature films based on a couple of books of poems.  Variety reports that Franco stars alongside Mila Kunis and Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of the 1983 book of poems Tar by C.K Williams, and he also enlisted Olivia Wilde, Chloe Sevigny and Whoopi Goldberg for an adaptation of Black Dog, Red Dog by Stephen Dobyns.

For Tar, Franco and executive producer Victorino Noval selected 10 directors via a competition at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts to helm segments of the film.  He also used a similar formula for Black Dog, Red Dog. Tar is completed and could premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, while Black Dog is still in the editing phase.  They’re both interesting projects, and it’s nice of Franco to give NYU students a shot and something as high profile as this.  The actor recently wrapped Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful and will next star in Seth Rogen’s directorial debut The End of the World.  He can also be seen playing a cornrowed drug dealer in Spring Breakers. No word on where Franco obtained the cloning technology necessary to do all the things he’s done in the past five years.

A Cornrowed, Gun Wielding James Franco and More Bikinis on Display in New Images from SPRING BREAKERS

Director Harmony Korine has been hard at work on his spring break movie appropriately titled Spring Breakers, and we’ve been bringing you plenty of images of the bikini-clad cast over the past few weeks.  The film stars Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine as four college girls who rob a fast food joint in order to pay for their spring break.  They get busted, but a drug dealer played by James Franco bails them out and convinces them to kill his nemesis.  It’s fairly ridiculous premise, but what more could we expect from the director of Trash Humpers?

Not only do these images show off Franco’s latest character creation in all his cornrowed glory, but we also get a, um, nice official image of the core actresses in their fabric-light costumes.  Hit the jump to check out the images.  If you missed any of the other bikini-filled images we posted previously, click here and here.

Amanda Seyfried Strips Down for LOVELACE Poster

It’s been a little while since we had a porn star update, so here’s a new poster featuring Linda Lovelace.  Technically, it’s Amanda Seyfried portraying Linda Lovelace in this new poster for the indie biopic, Lovelace.  Splitting hairs.  It’s not as provocative as you might expect, but I’m reserving some hope that, as the movie gets closer to release (unexpected pun!), the material gets more and more risque.  If that wasn’t the plan, it’s something the Lovelace marketing team might want to consider.

Then again, it’s not all about the sex appeal, since a good portion of Lovelace deals with the abusive relationship between the porn star and her husband, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).  You can take a look at previously released images, set photos and posters here.  Lovelace also stars Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco.  Hit the jump to see the new poster.

Hollywood A-listers throw the best apocalypse parties.  Directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have managed to land cameos from Emma Watson, Jason Segel and David Krumholtz, all starring as themselves, in the 2013 disaster comedy, The End of the World.  We already knew that James Franco would feature heavily in the film, since it seems that the celebs are crashing his apartment to ride out the apocalypse.   The place is starting to get a lot more crowded than the original short film that featured Rogen and Jay Baruchel as the only survivors holed up during the End of Days.  Watson is reportedly still in negotiations, but Segel and Krumholtz are set to join Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Craig Robinson and the others.  Should be one hell of a party. Hit the jump for more, including a trailer for the short film. [Update: Variety reports that Michael Cera and Rihanna are also circling cameo roles.]

It’s the time of year when many students are dreading their approaching finals while longing for the days of Spring Break.  For director Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, every day is a party. We previously brought you set photos of the cast in their beach attire.  You’ll probably be happy to know that Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine continued to prance around St. Petersburg, FL in their bikinis under the guise of filming a Spring Break movie. (The presence of James Franco is probably a red-herring.) Either way, we have a new video interview for you to check out which features some of the cast and a good deal of behind-the-scenes footage.  Additionally, I’ve pain-stakingly put together a gallery of some Spring Breakers images that I think you will find enjoyable. The things I do for you people.

Hit the jump to check out the new footage in the video interview and a slew of set photos from Spring Breakers.

A Look at James Franco Alongside a Half-Naked Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in SPRING BREAKERS

It is tough being James Franco (Pineapple Express). The poor guy has to spend time in Florida with the likes of Selena Gomez (Monte Carlo), Vanessa Hudgens (Sucker Punch), Rachel Korine (Trash Humpers) and Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) running around barely clothed. While the following images simply look like some paparazzi shots of Hollywood celebs on Spring Break, the cast is actually shooting the aptly named Spring Breakers. The latest feature from director Harmony Korine (Gummo), Spring Breakers follows four college girls who rob a fast food joint so can they afford to go on spring break in Florida.  When the girls invariably get arrested, they’re bailed out by Franco’s character, “Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer who bails them out and entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer who is appropriately named Arch.” Hit the jump to see Franco and the girls going wild.

Jonah Hill turned in a solid performance in Moneyball, and now he’s got another drama on the way, but he’ll be in the lead this time around.  Hill is set to star opposite James Franco in the adaptation of Michael Finkel‘s memoir True Story.  Directed by Rupert Goold (who wrote and directed the upcoming TV movie adaptation of Richard II starring Patrick Stewart), the story recounts the head-spinning relationship between disgraced New York Times journalist Michael Finkel (Hill) and accused murdered Christian Longo (Franco).

Trailer for CHERRY Starring Ashley Hinshaw, Heather Graham, and James Franco

The trailer for the drama Cherry has gone online.  Cherry centers on a young woman (Ashley Hinshaw) who goes into porn, and her various relationships with her porn director (Heather Graham), friend (Dev Patel), mother (Lily Taylor), and, according to what we previously reported, James Franco as a coked-up lawyer.  The Playlist caught the film at the Berlin Film Festival a few days ago, and said that the movie “is not very good” and avoids tough questions about whether the porn industry exploits or empowers women.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film currently does not have U.S. distribution, although I can easily imagine a straight-to-DVD future based on what I’m seeing from the trailer.

James Franco in Talks to Star in “How to Pick Up Women” Adaptation THE GAME

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 6th, 2012 at 12:52 pm

There was a time when casting stories regarding James Franco used to be surprising. A movie star doing a character arc on General Hospital? Inconceivable! But now, strange project after strange project, general reaction has become “Oh sure, of course.” Such is the case with the latest Franco casting story, as THR reports that the actor is in talks to star as a pick-up artist in The Game. Based on the not-at-all chauvinistic memoir by Neil Strauss documenting his efforts to learn the tricks to becoming a successful pick-up artist, the film will center on the protagonist’s efforts to get lucky. Franco is in talks to play “Mystery”, a man who serves as Strauss’ teacher.

Solitary Man writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien were recently tapped to rewrite the script, with Chris and Paul Weitz onboard to produce. Franco is also in talks to play another lothario, as he’s being eyed to cameo as Hugh Hefner in the biopic Lovelace. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the book.

Seth Rogen’s Directorial Debut THE APOCALYPSE in Negotiations with Sony

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: January 5th, 2012 at 7:13 pm

Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.

Let’s face it: the holidays are here and most people’s brains are already on vacation. Since it’s just too hard to come up with an original movie idea right now, a lot of talk has turned to potential sequels. Some franchises, like Gremlins and Mission: Impossible already have more than one movie in the books while others, such as Colombiana and Pineapple Express are open to sequels just because they can be. So we’ve ransacked the internets to find some updates on sequels you’ve been dying to see and others you never dreamed of being produced. Hit the jump to check them out.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Blu-ray Review

by Scott Wampler    Posted: December 21st, 2011 at 6:58 am

One of the biggest surprises for me this year was Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of The Planet of The Apes, a film that I had steadfastly refused to see for weeks after its release:  The Apes franchise is not a franchise I have ever loved (or even liked), the inclusion of James Franco seemed beyond-ominous to me (and the trailers seemed to support my suspicions), and the fact that 20th Century Fox was selling their film on the gee-whiz sight of an ape fighting a helicopter seemed—at the time—like the very definition of absurd to me.  Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for me to eat some serious crow:  Rise of The Planet of The Apes is one of the year’s best films, a rare combination of “good ideas” and “holy crap” special effects that completely changed my opinion of what this franchise could be.  You should see it, but first, read on for my full review, after the jump.
