With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super playing in limited release and VOD, I recently got to sit down with him to talk about the movie. As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), Super is violent, twisted, and darkly comic. I had a lot of fun watching it.
During the interview, Gunn talked about the history of Super and how the project came together (a lot of it has to do with Jenna Fischer), casting Kevin Bacon, the violence in the film, his thoughts on video on demand, his short film in the Farrelly brothers Movie 43, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super opening this weekend, I recently got to sit down with Ellen Page to talk about how she got involved with the project. As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), the film is violent, twisted, and darkly comic. During the interview, Page talked about the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, what’s her karaoke song, does she have an opinion on the ending of Inception, the violence in Super, upcoming projects like Freeheld (which will be written by Ron Nyswaner) and Stitch and Bitch with Alia Shawkat.
Finally, if you’re a fan of Page, you definitely need to see Super. The reason I say this is you’ve never seen Page like this. When I saw Super, she had the entire theater laughing at some of the insane stuff she does on screen. It was great. Hit the jump to watch the interview:

New posters have been released for Cars 2 and Super. The poster for Cars 2 is beyond bland, but at least it doesn’t have a character falling into a vat of shit, so I guess I should be grateful for that. As for the Super posters, I like the flyer-design and how they reference certain crimes (ranging from line-butting to pedophilia) that “heroes” Crimson Bolt (Rainn Wilson) and his sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page) take on.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Cars 2 opens in 3D on June 24th. Super opens April 1st.

Though Marvel is releasing Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger this year, everyone knows the true flick that has fans waiting with bated breath is the all-star event that is The Avengers. Writer/director Joss Whedon is assembling his team of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johanssen to start shooting the film very soon. While plot details are under lock and key, James Gunn, writer/director of the Rainn Wilson indie-superhero flick Super recently spoke at SXSW, picked up by Wired, about what he’s heard regarding Whedon’s script for The Avengers:
“Everybody I know who’s read it says it’s by far the best script for a Marvel movie ever. I’m very, very excited about it. Nobody loves superheroes more than Joss. He’s really got his heart in the right place.”
I think fans the world over can effectively let out a tiny sigh of relief at that confirmation from cult-favorite Gunn, though the anticipation/trepidation is far from over as the flick’s got a long way to go before it reaches audiences. The refreshingly candid bits from Gunn revolve around Hollywood’s current obsession with superhero movies, and are definitely worth checking out over at Wired. The Avengers is slated for a May 4th, 2012 release.

A lot of online folks have been giving James Gunn’s Super a hard time because of its obvious similarities to Matthew Vaughan’s Kick-Ass. It’s true that Gunn’s film– which stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and a hilarious Kevin Bacon– share more than a few passing similarities, but Super only improves upon the “real-life superhero” sub-genre that Kick-Ass mined so well last year. What has Gunn done to improve the formula? Find out after the break.

New posters have been released for James Gunn’s Super, Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Michael Goldbach’s Daydream Nation.
Hit the jump to check out the posters along with a synopsis for each film. Super opens April 1st and stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, and Nathan Fillion. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in 3D on May 20th and stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Ian McShane. Daydream Nation opens in select theaters on May 6th and stars Kat Dennings and Josh Lucas.

IFC has released a trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming superhero flick Super. I like that the trailer has to animate over the language and violence in order to make it viewable for all-ages. It’s a James Gunn movie and it’s best to expect something violent, twisted, and darkly comic. Super looks like it’s going to deliver on all three counts and that makes me very excited to see this flick.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion. It opens April 1st.

New posters have been released for two upcoming films: Super and Winnie the Pooh. Directed by James Gunn (Slither), Super tells the story of an average guy who takes on the persona of “The Crimson Bolt” upon learning that his wife is having an affair. The film stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. IFC is set to release the film on April 1st.
The “bear of little brain” returns to the big screen in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. Narrated by John Cleese, the 2D “hand-drawn style” animated film follows Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga and Roo on an all-new adventure to help Christopher Robin. Winnie the Pooh is slated for a July 15th release. Hit the jump to check out both posters.
The first clip from writer/director James Gunn’s (Slither) superhero parody flick Super is now available online following its world premiere during last night’s 2010 Scream Awards. Running at almost two minutes, the footage is the same that Gunn and co. debuted at Comic-Con over the summer and is a reminder to all of us that there is, in fact, “no butting in line.”
Super was picked up by IFC Films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, so we will hopefully be seeing it in theaters sooner rather than later. To check out Steve’s video review of the film from TIFF, click here. To see the clip as well as a synopsis, hit the jump. Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.

Less than 48 hours after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, James Gunn’s (Slither) Super has found its distributor. IFC Films has paid seven figures to secure the U.S. rights to Gunn’s everyman take on the superhero archetype. While IFC normally pays less for its deals, they apparently faced some stiff competition for the film from potential buyers such as Magnolia.
Super stars Rainn Wilson as an “average guy” who takes on the persona of “The Crimson Bolt” upon learning that his wife is having an affair. Starring alongside Wilson are Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon. To learn more about Super, check out Steve’s video blog/review of the film which he recorded shortly after its Toronto premiere.
[Update: You can now check out the official press release after the jump.]

Just a few minutes ago I got out of the premiere of James Gunn’s Super at the Toronto International Film Festival. As a fan of his previous work (Slither, PG Porn), I was hoping Super would be awesome. While it didn’t reach the level I hoped for walking in, there was enough cool stuff that you should definitely be excited to check it out when it eventually gets released. Also, while Rainn Wilson was great as the lead, Super was the Ellen Page show. Trust me, you have never seen Ellen Page like this, and she had the entire theater laughing at some of the insane stuff she does on screen. Finally, if you were nervous Super would be PG-13 or play it safe, since Gunn made it himself and very low budget…let’s just say Super has a lot of creative freedom and a lot of blood.
Anyway, right after the movie ended I recorded a video blog with Peter from Slashfilm and we were joined by Alex from FirstShowing. Hit the jump for our thoughts on the film and keep your eyes peeled for a very brief appearance by a famous movie director.

We now have a new image from director James Gunn’s (Slither) upcoming dark comedy/super hero movie, Super. The film tells the story of a regular guy (Rainn Wilson) who decides to become a superhero when his wife (Liv Tyler) becomes a drug addict. Matt was impressed by what he saw during the film’s Comic-Con panel and if this new image that was released by James Gunn via his own website is any indication, then we are truly going to get one crazy little movie with Super. However, we won’t have to wait too long before we start hearing how the film is like since it’s scheduled to premiere during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness program.
Hit the jump for the image and a full plot synopsis.

“And on the seventh day, God finished his work that he had done and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done…and that night, he took to the stage at the Mayhem Festival and decreed that man would dig through the ditches and that he would burn through the witches and that he would slam in the back of my Dragula.” — The Gospel according to James Gunn.
Yes, the beloved geek filmmaker (Slither) revealed via Twitter that he’s cast heavy metal rocker/horror director Rob Zombie as the voice of God in his upcoming superhero send-up Super. The film stars Rainn Wilson as a man who’s wife falls into the clutches of a drug dealer; in an effort to rescue her, he becomes the (sure-to-be comically inept) superhero, The Crimson Bolt. The film also stars Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and previous Gunn collaborators Gregg Henry, Michael Rooker and Captain Mal Reynolds himself, Nathan Fillion playing a character called The Holy Avenger. I don’t think I’m alone when I say: Can’t…Freaking…Wait.

James Gunn’s Super will make its world premiere as part of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival “Midnight Madness” line-up. Super centers on Frank (played by Rainn Wilson), a regular guy who decides to become a superhero when his wife (played by Liv Tyler) becomes a drug addict. I dug the film’s panel at Comic-Con and if you like James Gunn’s style of humor, then Super looks like it won’t disappoint. The cast also includes Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, and Nathan Fillion.
Hit the jump to check out a new image from Super as well as a list of all the films playing at Midnight Madness. This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will run from September 9 – 19th. [Updated with new films and a synopsis for each film]

On his official website, writer/director James Gunn has posted images from his upcoming dark superhero comedy Super starring Rainn Wilson. Not only does the image give non-Con-goers a first look at the Crimson Bolt (the alter-ego of Wilson’s character, Frank), but I’m really happy that Gunn posted footage from the panel. As I wrote in my coverage of the panel, one of the best moments was when Wilson and co-star Nathan Fillion discovered who would win in a fight between Dwight Schrute and Malcolm Reynolds. Now you can watch it in the comfort of your own home and not in the uncomfortable chairs of Hall H.
Hit the jump to check out the images and the footage. Super is slated to hit theaters in 2011.
