Although the release date for The Raven has been pushed back a month, that’s allowed Relativity to give us more looks at the property, like this new poster. It’s not quite as ink-soaked or blood-soaked as previous efforts and resembles more of a phoenix than a raven, but it’s stylish nonetheless. Here’s what you need to know about the posters we’ve rounded up today:

International Trailer for THE RAVEN Starring John Cusack and Luke Evans

An international trailer for the period crime-thriller The Raven has gone online.  The story follows a Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) who teams up with Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) to solve a string of serial killings based on Poe’s stories.  It’s amazing how much a trailer can give away in the short span of one minute and fourteen seconds.  I’m afraid I won’t be able to go into the film and be surprised at how each Poe story is tied to a separate killing.  I’m also dismayed that the trailer is trying to sell Poe as an action-hero, which makes the movie look ridiculous rather than a gothic murder mystery.  This is all the fault of the trailer and I’m hoping that the film turned out alright.  At least the movie features this great line:  “We are in dire need of your unwholesome expertise.”  Then again, it also has Poe screaming, “I’ll send you to hell!”

Hit the jump to check out the international trailer.  The Raven opens March 9, 2012.

First Trailer for THE RAVEN Starring John Cusack

The first trailer for James McTeigue’s The Raven has gone online.  The story takes place in 1840s Baltimore where a series of grisly murders appear to have been inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack).  Poe and a detective (Luke Evans) must team up to find the killer before he takes out the woman Poe loves.  While I think the premise is intriguing and I’m always up for a crime thriller that pulls the setting out of the modern day, this trailer comes off like “Hey, remember From Hell?  Let’s try that again.”  Hopefully McTeigue’s film will play far better than the unfortunate adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel.

Hit the jump for the trailer.  The film also stars Alice Eve, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Brendan Gleeson.  The Raven opens March 9, 2012.

New Images from THE RAVEN and IMMORTALS

Relativity has released new images from James McTeigue’s The Raven and Tarsem Singh’s ImmortalsThe Raven is a period thriller that has Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) teaming up with Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) to stop a serial killer who’s using Poe’s work as inspiration.  It’s an interesting premise and McTeigue still has my goodwill from V for Vendetta. As you can see from the image above, Fields will chase someone down but keep a firm grip on his top hat.  Can’t afford to lose top hats.  Speaking of hat-love, Singh continues his affection for ridiculous head-attire as seen by the first image of Athena (Isabel Lucas) in Immortals.  The story is about the gods calling on Theseus (Henry Cavill) to help them defeat the power-hungry King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke).  It looks less promising than The Raven.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The Raven opens March 9, 2012.  Immortals opens in 3D on November 11th.

James McTeigue to Direct Crime Drama NESS/CAPONE

This past April, we reported that Relativity had bought the Black List script Ness/Capone to rival Warner Bros.’ Al Capone story Cicero. Harry Potter director David Yates has been developing Cicero for quite some time, with Tom Hardy attached to star, but he recently committed to a multi-film adaptation of The Stand, so it may be a while before Cicero gets going. Well, Relativity looks to be taking advantage of Yates’ busy schedule as they’re turning to V for Vendetta director James McTeigue to helm to crime drama.

Deadline reports that McTeigue is in negotiations to helm the pic, which chronicles the Elliott Ness/Al Capone saga in more detail than Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables. McTeigue, who recently completed the Edgar Allen Poe flick The Raven, is currently readying his next film Message From the King which centers on an outsider who travels to L.A. to investigate the disappearance of his sister.

Comic-Con 2011: HAYWIRE and THE RAVEN Panel Recap; Watch the First HAYWIRE Trailer

How do you follow a panel with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson?  You don’t do it with another blockbuster.  Instead, you take some lesser known movies and attempt to boost their profile.  And for film nerds, having Steven Sodebergh on hand certainly doesn’t hurt.  Soderbergh has cast MMA fighter Gina Carano as the lead in his spy thriller Haywire and surrounded her with an outstanding cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Douglas.

Relativity has also brought James McTeigue’s The Raven starring John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans.  It’s an intriguing premise where Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack) and a detective (Evans) attempts to discover who is using his writing as the inspiration for a series of murders.  Hit the jump to read about Relativity’s presentation for Haywire and The Raven.

FilmNation Entertainment has set V For Vendetta director James McTeigue to helm Message from the King. The film centers on an outsider who comes to LA to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell (Unknown) scripted the thriller. McTeigue recently directed the Edgar Allen Poe-centered thriller The Raven starring John Cusack and Luke Evans. It appears that things went well with the production, as FilmNation also financed that project and has now quickly set McTeigue for Message from the King. No other details on the film are known at this point besides that basic logline. The Raven opens March 9th, 2012.

We now have our first look at John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in the upcoming period-thriller The Raven.  Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the story has Poe teaming up with a detective (played by Luke Evans) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiancée (Alice Eve) and gone on a murder spree that recalls Poe’s stories.

Luke Evans and Alice Eve Join THE RAVEN but Jeremy Renner Drops Out

Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe) and Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) are in talks to join James McTeigue’s upcoming period thriller The Raven starring John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe.  According to Heat Vision, “Evans will play a detective who partners with Poe to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiance (Eve) and has gone on a murders spree that mimics the author’s work.”  No wonder every picture we have of Poe has him looking so bummed.

Jeremy Renner was originally set to play the part of the detective, but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with the fourth Mission: Impossible.  Shooting on The Raven begins November 9th with Serbia and Budapest standing in for 1849 Baltimore.  Eve recently signed on to the indie thriller ATM while Evans is wrapping up filming on Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3D adaptation of The Three Musketeers.  Hit the jump for what McTeigue had to say about The Raven to Steve back in November of last year.

NINJA ASSASSIN Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: April 1st, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Ninja Assassin movie image Rain - slice.jpg

If you grew up in the 80′s, you’ll remember there was briefly a ninja phase in cinema. Sho Kosugi ruled the universe of Canon for one brief moment, and everywhere people were buying Tabbi boots. Children longed for shurikens, but would have to settle for the similarly-premised wacky wall-walkers. To sum up: The 1980′s were fucked up. There’s some enjoyable nostalgia to be found in Ninja Assassin, if you remember those days (and boots) fondly. Rain stars as Raizo, who was trained as a ninja, but now wants his revenge against his ninja family, including Ozunu (Kosugi). There’s also some government involvement, which allows Naomie Harris to have a role. My review of Ninja Assassin on Blu-ray after the jump.

Jeremy Renner to Star in Indie Drama RAVEN; In Negotiations to Play Lead in BATTLESHIP and “Secret Project”

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 17th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

jeremy_renner_01.jpgIt’s not only an honor just to be nominated for an Academy Award; it’s a major career boost.  Jeremy Renner, who received a nomination for Best Actor, is now receiving–like most first-time nominees in the major categories–a slew of offers.  The New York Times reports that Renner’s next project will be director James McTeigue’s (V for Vendetta)  indie period piece/thriller Raven with Ewan McGregor in talks to co-star.  The film is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem, but set in 1850′s Baltimore with a serial killer whose crimes mirror Poe’s work.  He spoke about the project in greater depth when Steve interviewed him back in November.

But the bigger news is that two blockbuster projects, both of which are set to shoot this summer, are competing to get the actor.  First, there’s Peter Berg’s Battleship, based on the board game but told as a naval-warfare story against aliens.  Then there’s a “secret project” where Renner has had five meetings to discuss playing the role, but he declined to say what it was.  That “secret project” has to be something massive if it’s enough to make Renner think twice about starring in a movie as big as Battleship.

Exclusive: Director James McTeigue on the Wachowskis, SUPERMAN, Edgar Allen Poe, NINJA ASSASSIN, MAGNETO, and a Lot More!

James McTeigue image_slice.jpg

A few days ago I attended the Los Angeles press junket for director James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin.  While I already posted my four minute video interview with McTeigue and Rain (the lead in Ninja Assassin), I was able to get some extra time with McTeigue the following day.  Since I’m a huge fan of V for Vendetta and his work with the Wachowskis on Speed Racer, I decided to use my extended interview to ask about his other projects and home video questions.

So after the jump I try and get James McTeigue to tell me what the Wachowskis are working on, his next project on Edgar Allen Poe (The Raven), the Superman and Magneto rumors, what’s on the Ninja Assassin DVD/Blu-ray, could Hugo Weaving be in his Edgar Allen Poe movie, his thoughts on Star Wars (he was second unit director on Episode Two), extended edition DVDs, and a whole lot more!  It’s a great interview so take a look:
