According to series writer and co-executive producer Dean Lorey, the entire original cast of the Emmy-winning series Arrested Development will be returning for the new episodes in 2013. While this should have gone without saying once it was reported that Netflix had picked up the exclusive broadcast rights, it’s nice to get some confirmation from the show-runners since information has been hard to come by. Lorey himself said that “even the schedule is being kept under wraps.” Reprising their roles from the first run will be Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter, although there are still no formal deals in place.

On his blog, Lorey commented that he is penning a new season along with Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely and will begin shooting in 2012. There is still no word as to the exact number of episodes, only that it was suggested to do a 9 or 10 episode season to bridge the old series to (hopefully) a feature film. Hit the jump for more.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to Script HORRIBLE BOSSES 2; Bateman, Day, and Sudeikis Expected to Return

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 4th, 2012 at 12:38 pm

John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein Horrible Bosses slice

I placed Horrible Bosses on my Top 10 of 2011 because not only was it hilarious, but because it had staying power.  New Line Cinema is now moving forward on a sequel and have re-hired original writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.  According to THR, Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis are also expected to return, and New Line is also trying to bring back director Seth Gordon.  I’m glad Daley, Goldstein, and possibly Gordon are returning, but what sells me on a sequel is brining back the Bateman, Day, and Sudeikis.  I don’t mean to diminish the work of the screenwriters or director, but Horrible Bosses works because of the chemistry between those guys.  I have no idea where a sequel could go, but as long as the lead trio is back, I’ll stay interested.

Bosses was a strong hit with a worldwide gross of $209 million off a $35 million budget.  Daley and Goldstein have stayed hot with their screenwriting; the duo was hired to pen the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and they also wrote the upcoming comedy Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey.

THE CHANGE-UP Blu-ray Review

by Scott Wampler    Posted: December 12th, 2011 at 6:17 am

David Dobkin’s The Change-Up arrived earlier this year following a marketing campaign pitched at the level of an out-of-control air siren, made a couple of bucks at the box office, and was then promptly forgotten about until now, when the film hit DVD and Blu-ray.  Admit it:  you didn’t even remember this film came out this year until you saw the title of this review.  You probably didn’t bother seeing it in theaters, but if you did, you’ve blocked it from your memory.  Now that it’s available on home video, you’ve got the option of either A) reliving the magic, or B) seeing Dobkin’s film for the very first time.  Should you?  Find out after the jump, folks.

PSA Sunday: Jason Bateman Warns Against the Dangers of Noise Pollution

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 27th, 2011 at 8:52 am

Sure, you probably know him as the actor playing the straight man in such comedies as Arrested Development, Couples Retreat and The Change-Up, but Jason Bateman was a kid once, too; a kid who hated noise pollution. Actually, from the look on his face in this PSA from 1987, it looks like Bateman hated being woken up to film this idiotic clip for One to Grow On, part of NBC’s Saturday morning lineup. It features a warning against blasting music from your shoulder-mounted boombox in public. It’s also a warning for future generations about the dangers of 1980s music and fashion. Hit the jump to bring the noise and here’s our previous PSA Sunday articles.

Hello, Michael. New Episodes of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming to Netflix

Expensive suits.  Quasi-incestuous relationships. Carl Weathers.  Minor Treason.  It’s been nearly six years since the Bluth family brought good wholesome entertainment into America’s living rooms.  But finally, after years of fan demand and seemingly endless rumors, new episodes of Arrested Development are returning to television in 2013.  Provided, of course, that television has Netflix.

Like Family Guy and Futurama before, Twentieth Century Fox is bringing back the critically-acclaimed sitcom (Time Magazine called it one of the best TV shows of ALL-TIME)  for a brand new season in 2013.  But unlike its animated counterparts, fresh episodes of Arrested Development will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix.  We told you back in March that Netflix would host original content with Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards, and while Development isn’t technically a Netflix original, the new episodes are surely the rental service’s highest-profile project to date.   Hit the jump for more on AD’s return.

HORRIBLE BOSSES Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: October 14th, 2011 at 7:00 am

horrible-bosses-movie-image-slice-01

2011’s summer season was marked by the number of R-rated comedies it had, and the number of successful ones. Basically, it takes two years for the heat of one project to generate more of the same and you could say 2011 comedy summer this was all due to 2009’s The Hangover. This year saw Bridesmaids, The Hangover Part II, Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher, Friends With Benefits, The Change Up and 30 Minutes or Less. And in that you can see that the start launched some really successful films, but by the end of summer audiences became bored of these films.  Hit overload. Horrible Bosses made over $100 Million and did so because of a great premise. Three guys (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudekis) hate the people they work for (Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell) and so they plot to kill them. Our review of the Blu-ray release of Horrible Bosses follows after the jump.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming Back for New Season Before the Movie [Updated with Video of Reunion and Ron Howard Interview]

Earlier today, a tweet from The New Yorker, reporting straight from their own festival in New York, announced the unthinkable as Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz revealed during a cast reunion that the series would be back for another season, but that’s not all. This new season would lead directly into the long-gestating movie that has been talked about by each cast member, every other month, since the invention of television. Since that tweet, more details have surfaced from the festival from EW who reveals that Hurwitz intends to shoot 9 to 10 episodes, each focusing on on an individual character from the Bluth clan (which includes Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia DeRossi, David Cross, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and Alia Shawkat). Each episode will catch audiences up on what the characters have been doing for the past five years since the series’ cancellation in 2006. More details on the new season and the forthcoming movie after the jump.

[Update: The entire 100-minute reunion Arrested Development reunion panel is now available for your viewing pleasure after the jump; we've also added an interview with Ron Howard where he talks about how the new season will relate to the movie]

Jason Bateman to Star in Indie Films THE LONGEST WEEK and DISCONNECT

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: September 20th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Jason Bateman slice

Rounding out a busy year of studio films (Paul, The Change-Up, Horrible Bosses), Jason Bateman will film two indies back to back this fall.  First up will be writer/director Peter Glanz’s The Longest Week, in which Bateman will star as a mooching Manhattanite living off of his wealthy parents in their high-class hotel. The Longest Week derives its title from the length of time it takes for his character to get kicked out of the hotel, be cut-off from his inheritance and fall in love. (Sounds similar to this year’s Arthur remake…) The film also stars Olivia Wilde (The Change-Up) and will be produced by Stone Douglass, Taylor Materne and Neda Armian through Far Hills Pictures.

Bateman’s second Indie of the fall will be the ensemble piece, Disconnect. The script, penned by Andrew Stern, centers around a group of characters who are at odds with all manner of modern communication and seek to make real human connections in our digital world. Directed by Henry Alex Rubin (Murderball), Disconnect also stars Alexander Skarsgard, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist and Colin Ford, who plays Bateman’s son. Mickey Liddell, William Horberg and Jennifer Hilton will produce. Hit the jump to see what’s next for Bateman after he wraps on the Indies.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Cast Reunites for The New Yorker Festival

It turns out it’s possible to get the cast of Arrested Development to reunite, or at least reunite for one evening.  Gothamist [via The Playlist] reports that Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter will take the stage with Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz on October 2nd for a special panel.  I’m sure they’ll talk about free trade agreements, the philosophical merits of Kant and Heidegger, and other topics.  I doubt anyone will bring up the Arrested Development movie.  Who wants to hear about that?

In all seriousness, wouldn’t it be awesome if this is how they chose to announce that the film has a greenlight and firm start date?  It’s a bit of a long shot, but either way, you’d be crazy not to try and get into this event.  Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon.  Unfortunately, there’s no discount if you blue yourself.

Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy to Star in THE ID THEFT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: August 15th, 2011 at 6:01 pm

Jason Bateman is lining up his next comedy, and it looks like Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy will be along for the ride. Deadline reports that Bateman and McCarthy are attached to star in the comedy The ID Theft, which Bateman is also producing. The film was originally set to center on a guy who steals another guy’s identity, but apparently Bateman pushed for McCarthy to take on the role of the titular theft after seeing her scene-stealing performance in Bridesmaids.

Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) wrote the original script, but Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II) is currently doing a rewrite. Bateman kills pretty much any role he takes on, and McCarthy was fantastic in Bridesmaids, so this is definitely an exciting pairing. The film is expected to shoot during McCarthy’s hiatus from her CBS comedy Mike and Molly next April. Bridesmaids was a showcase for the actress’ talent, as she’s sold a pitch to Paramount, landed a role in Judd Apatow’s This is Forty, may possibly be starring in an Apatow/Feig comedy with Jon Hamm, and is set to host the upcoming season of SNL all in the wake of the monster hit.

TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Len Wiseman, Jason Bateman & Ryan Reynolds, J.J. Abrams Updates STAR TREK 2

This week’s “Top 5″ is a special one for me. Before letting your imagination run away from you, I’ll just say that it’s not for any nostalgic reasons that connect back to the content at hand but rather because I’m writing it while literally in the midst of moving. For those who haven’t experienced this joyous task first-hand, this means that I’m currently a sweaty, disheveled, unorganized mess who can’t for the life of me figure out when/how/why I accumulated so much junk. For the record, Mom, I’m not referring to my posters. They’re awesome. Period. End of story.

All venting aside, this week’s installment features the first official look at Henry Cavill in director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, a video interview with director Len Wiseman where he discusses his Total Recall remake and the return of everyone’s favorite three-breasted woman, the first image of Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises along with a cornucopia of set photos from the film, an exclusive interview with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds for The Change-Up, and a Star Trek 2 update from J.J. Abrams. You can find brief recaps and links to all of the above after the jump.

THE CHANGE-UP Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 4th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

The body-switching comedy is a silly concept which is why it’s been resigned to family films.  Two people who don’t understand each other’s lives switch bodies through magical means and are given new appreciation for what the other does.  The Change-Up turns that concept on its head by re-setting it into a raunchy, gross-out R-rated film and making the characters look inward at to what they’re missing in their own lives rather than appreciating the person whose form they’ve taken.  The result is a film that’s painfully funny, quickly forgettable, and a little bit mean.

Exclusive: Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds Talk THE CHANGE-UP

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: August 3rd, 2011 at 3:20 pm

When I first heard that Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds were going to star in a body switching comedy, my first thought was, “Hasn’t this concept been beaten to death?”.  But, when I found out the guys who wrote The Hangover (Jon Lucas and Scott Moore) were writing the script and the director of Wedding Crashers (David Dobkin) was helming the project, I thought The Change-Up had the chance to be very funny.  And it is.  It’s actually the hardest I’ve laughed in a theater in a long time and I absolutely recommend checking out the movie this weekend.

Anyhow, I recently got to sit down with Bateman and Reynolds for an exclusive interview.  They talked about making the movie, the babies (you’ll understand after you see the movie), whether or not they were nervous to sign onto the project, the line between realism and “Hollywoodising” a scene, and a lot more.  Reynolds also gave me an update on R.I.P.D.. Hit the jump for more.

The body-switching comedy The Change-Up opens this weekend and stars Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds have taken it upon themselves to explain why you should go see it. The video is really funny, and features Bateman and Reynolds playing off of each other perfectly. Plus, there’s Green Lantern and grandma jokes, which is really all you can ask for.

6 Movie Clips from THE CHANGE-UP Starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: July 30th, 2011 at 10:57 am

With director David Dobkin’s (Wedding Crashers) The Change-Up opening next weekend, we’ve been provided with six clips from the very funny comedy.  Like Matt said, “The film is a body-switching comedy like Freaky Friday except instead of kooky hijinks that bring a mother and daughter closer together, it’s a raunchy, foul-mouthed set of hijinks that centers on two estranged friends played by Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman.  Bateman is the uptight family man while Reynolds’ character is a man-child who dreams of making it big as a Hollywood actor even though he lives in Atlanta. ”

I saw it before doing interviews and thought it was the funniest film I’d seen since Bridesmaids.  Really. I laughed my ass off and definitely recommend catching it next weekend.   Hit the jump for the clips and look for my interviews with Bateman/Reynolds and director David Dobkin’s next week.
