First Trailer for J. EDGAR Starring Leonardo DiCaprio

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the biopic J. Edgar directed by Clint Eastwood.  DiCaprio is spot-on here as J. Edgar Hoover. He’s got the accent down, and I’m liking his intensity (but really, did we expect anything less?). I’m still a bit apprehensive about the film given Eastwood’s less than stellar resume from the past few years, but I like what I’m seeing here. It suits the director to get back to character drama after the ethereal nature of Hereafter, and this seems to be on the right track. The film also looks to be taking a delicate approach to Hoover’s suspected “more-than-friends” relationship with Clyde Tolson, played here by Armie Hammer. Overall, I’m impressed (though DiCaprio’s old-age makeup is a bit, um, questionable), but I’m still keeping my expectations relatively low. The film also stars Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Jeffrey Donovan, Ed Westwick, and Judi Dench also star.

Exclusive Interview: Bruce Campbell Talks BURN NOTICE: THE FALL OF SAM AXE

I’m a big fan of Burn Notice so when Collider was offered the chance to ask Bruce Campbell five questions about the show and its upcoming prequel movie Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, I leaped at the opportunity.  I asked Campbell if the events of Fall of Sam Axe will factor into the show’s fifth season, how much input he had into the script, whether he was surprised by any elements of Sam’s backstory, and how the movie will retain the vibe of the series.  I also asked if we’ll be seeing the estranged Mrs. Axe this season.

Jeffrey Donovan to Play Robert F. Kennedy in J. EDGAR

I’m huge Burn Notice dork and that’s due in large part to the charisma and versatility of its star, Jeffrey Donovan.  With Burn Notice being one of cable’s biggest hits, I’m surprised he hasn’t become a bigger presence in theaters, although that may be due to a number of factors (e.g. scheduling, preference, pay, etc.).  He last graced the big screen in a supporting role in Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and now it looks like he’ll be re-teaming with Eastwood for the upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic, J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCarpio.  Donovan tweeted earlier today:

I fly to LA Sunday. I have been cars as Bobby Kennedy opposite LD in HOOVER. excited. working with Mr Eastwood again. Dreams come true.

Although (to the best of our knowledge) the movie is no longer titled “Hoover”, it’s nevertheless exciting that he’ll be a part of the impressive cast.  J. Edgar also stars Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas, Stephen Root, and Judi Dench.  As for Donovan, he’ll return in the new season of Burn Notice, which premieres this summer.  He also directed the upcoming Burn Notice spin-off movie, Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, which airs on USA on April 17th.

Jeffrey Donovan Will Direct the BURN NOTICE Prequel Movie Starring Bruce Campbell

Fans of the USA series Burn Notice and Bruce Campbell better buckle up, because you’re in for one hell of a ride. Today the cable network announced that series star Jeffrey Donovan (who plays Michael Westen) is set to direct the prequel movie that features Bruce Campbell’s character Sam Axe. The story is set in late 2005 after a faction of Colombian rebels makes trouble for the locally stationed military platoon, and Lieutenant Commander Sam Axe is sent down to advise. As the mission unfolds, Sam begins to uncover the dark secrets of the area, learning the truth about sacrifice, deception, and ultimately what’s worth fighting for.

Series creator Matt Nix is writing the script and will executive produce with Donovan and Campbell. For those worries about Donovan’s directing skills, he’s already directed one episode of Burn Notice, so he should be ready to go. Hit the jump for the official press release.

BURN NOTICE: SEASON THREE DVD Review

If you’ve read my DVD reviews for season one and season two of USA’s Burn Notice, then you know that I’m kind of in love with the show.  It has a formula and it (mostly) continues to work due to strong performances and sharp writing.  What I like most about the Burn Notice is that it’s redefined my notion of what a spy thriller can be.  It doesn’t negate a show like Chuck or the James Bond movies, but its matter-of-fact tone is a fresh take on the genre that you won’t find anywhere else.

Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) says in the show’s intro, “As long as you’re burned, you’re not going anywhere.”  Hit the jump for my take on where Burn Notice went in its third season.

USA Renews BURN NOTICE for Two More Seasons

USA Network is feeling the burn.  Although the fourth season of Burn Notice, the top-rated show on cable, has not yet finished production, President of Original Programming, Jeffrey Watchel, has re-upped the veteran series for seasons 5 and 6, each running at least 15 and 18 episodes, respectively.  As Watchel told Variety, “Once Saturday Night Live makes fun of you, how can you not committ to extra seasons?”  More after the jump:

BURN NOTICE Season Two DVD Review

I’ll keep saying it till it isn’t true: “Burn Notice” is one of the best shows on television.  It’s unbelievably smart, confident, cool, funny, and exciting.  I’m not surprised that fourth-place NBC hasn’t had the smarts to try and grab the show from USA (which is owned by NBC-Universal) and test it out on network primetime where it could have a chance of doing some serious damage.  But for now it’s one of the highest-rated shows on cable and with good reason.
