While negotiations for a seventh season of Showtime’s smash hit series Dexter came to a stalemate earlier last month, unsurprisingly all parties involved have finally come to an agreement as the network has renewed the show for two more seasons. The series is the hallmark of Showtime’s original programming, and even though it’s in its sixth season the ratings continue to rise from week to week. While last season was a bit of a letdown following a series-best season four (fueled by a powerhouse performance by John Lithgow), I’ve been pretty happy with the story arcs in the current season. Hit the jump for more, including the likelihood of season eight being the show’s last.

The first trailer for the thriller Gone has been released. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as a young woman who suspects that her missing sister has been abducted by the same serial killer who kidnapped her two years prior. The trailer’s actually not bad, as it sets up the movie almost as a revenge flick with the authorities refusing to believe Seyfried’s story. The young woman decides to set out on her own to track down the killer in order to free her sister. The pic looks like it could be a pretty intense little thriller in the vein of Minority Report.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Jennifer Carpenter, Wes Bently, and Sebastian Stan. Gone opens February 24th, 2012.

Summit Entertainment has set release dates for two of its upcoming projects. First up, Heitor Dhalia’s thriller Gone is now slated to hit theaters on February 24, 2012. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter, and Sebastian Stan, the film focuses on a young woman (Seyfried) who suspects her missing sister has been abducted by the same serial killer who kidnapped her only two years prior. As the story so often goes, no one believes Seyfried’s suspicions (which I’m assuming turn out to be right on the money) and she is forced to save her sister all by her lonesome.
THR also reports that the studio has set April 6, 2012 as the release date for its similarly kidnapped-based thriller Cold Light of Day. Starring Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis, Mabrouk El Mechri’s (JCVD) film centers on a man (Cavill) whose family is abducted while vacationing in Spain. As he puts the pieces of their disappearance together, the man uncovers family secrets and a government conspiracy that are responsible for the crime.

Emily Wickersham (I Am Number Four), Wes Bentley (Jonah Hex), and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) have joined the cast of Gone, a thriller headlined by Amanda Seyfried. The script by Allison Burnett (Fame) centers on “a kidnap survivor (Seyfried) who attempts to find the same killer whom she believes has abducted her sister.” The ideal: Gone does for Seyfried what Taken did for Liam Neeson.
Brazilian filmmaker Heitor Dhalia (Adrift) will direct; Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi (Gamer) of Lakeshore Entertainment will produce Gone with Sidney Kimmel (Adventureland), Chris Salvaterra (The Visitor), and Dan Abrams of Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. According to Variety, filming is scheduled to begin in April.

Almost a month ago, we reported that Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen were the leading candidates to take on the starring role of Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower adaptation. Today, we’re updating the list of candidates to include recent Golden Globe-winner (and current Oscar-nominee) Christian Bale. Reports are filing in that Bale has not only entered the casting equation but that he is currently director Ron Howard’s choice for the lead role.
For more on the role of Deschain as well as updates regarding possible candidates for female character Susannah Dean, hit the jump.

With the November 24 release date only a month away for Dwayne Johnson’s return to kicking ass in movie theaters, CBS Films has released a new green band trailer for Faster. If you remember, last week the studio released a red band trailer, which showed you this wasn’t another Dwayne Johnson kids flick.
Written by Joe and Tony Gayton (Bulletproof), Faster is directed by George Tillman, Jr. (Notorious) and it stars Carla Gugino, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace, Jennifer Carpenter, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Moon Bloodgood, and Tom Berenger. Hit the jump to watch:

Dwayne Johnson is looking to push into more action after a slew of kid-friendly flicks and CBS Films’ Faster is his re-entry into the genre. George Tillman, Jr. (Soul Food, Barbershop) will direct the hard-nosed revenge flick, written by Joe and Tony Gayton (Bulletproof). The flick has already received an R rating and the new clip certainly shows its violent and sexy side. Hit the jump for the red band trailer, plot synopsis, and the mildly impressive cast.

Dexter is a show that works thanks to a Herculean effort by Michael C. Hall. The show is founded on a precarious premise that depends on you investing in the adventures of a serial killer, anchored by a sardonic inner monologue and visions of a dead father. And with Chip Johannessen (24) taking the reins for the new season, Dexter is on its third showrunner in five years, which messes with the auteur theory. It’s not the effort of a singluar creative vision that holds the show together as Showtime’s flagship drama — at least not behind the camera.
Hall is brilliant. He has three Emmy nominations (plus a fourth for Six Feet Under) to prove it. Is it any surprise that he’s no less brilliant in the first three episodes of season five, reacting to the closing events of last season in which… Oh. Wait. This gets into spoilers for the first four seasons from here on out. If you’re cool with that, you can find my review of the first quarter of season five of Dexter after the jump.

I’m very late to the “Dexter” party. While many folks told me to tune in, I only recently watched Showtime’s hit show and have to say…it’s as great as everyone says. If you aren’t familiar with the show, “Dexter” is about a Miami blood splatter specialist who moonlights as a serial killer. The twist is that he was trained from a young age to hunt down and kill other killers. Trust me, the show is extremely well written and each season has a great arc.
So now that you know how I feel about the show, you’ll understand how excited I was to interview Jennifer Carpenter – who plays Dexter’s sister – at last week’s Saturn Awards. Unlike when I interviewed her for “Quarantine“, this time I was very familiar with her show and tried to ask as many fan questions as I could think of. So after the jump you can watch Jennifer talk about Dexter’s 4th season and she says the first shot of episode one is going to make “Dexter” fans very happy. Take a look:
