Back in 2010, we reported that Larry Charles (Borat) had signed on to direct the comedy Pierre, Pierre starring Jim Carrey. Carrey plays an obnoxious Frenchman who steals the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in the hope of selling it so he can finally move out of his parents house. The project was previously set up Fox, who paid $1 million for the spec script, but when previous director Jason Reitman dropped out, the movie was put into turn around. Now, Screen Daily reports that the film has secured financing and will shoot this summer in Germany and other parts of Europe. Screen Daily adds that the budget was boosted from $20 million to $30 million based off the strength of the supporting roles and the actors currently in talks for them.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when my 4-year old daughter and I “popped” in Mr. Popper’s Penguins. As I’ve mentioned before, I have kids now so I see a pretty full spectrum of movies for children. Popper’s stars Jim Carrey, which could be a make-it-or-break-it for many decision makers. I myself am a fan of Carrey, especially of older work like Fire Marshall Bill (In Living Color), Ace Ventura, and Me, Myself and Irene.
It is pretty well known that Carrey has tried his hand at several other types of roles like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, The Number 23, etc. Some people have different perspectives on how successful he has been at these but I mention it because I would say that Popper’s is a return to form for him. My review of the Blu-ray after the jump:

We’ve got quite a few set photos to share with you today, involving everything from Zach Galifianakis as a Southern politician in Chinese robes to Olivia Wilde in a luchador outfit. Briefly:
Hit the jump to check out the photos. [Update: We've updated the article with the first images of James Franco as Hugh Hefner in Lovelace]

The dueling magician comedy Burt Wonderstone is currently filming in the magical land of mysticism that is Las Vegas, and some set photos from the pic have started to surface. Just the other day we brought you images that gave us our first look at stars Steve Carell, Olivia Wilde, and Steve Buscemi, and now we’ve got a glimpse of Jim Carrey’s very douchey-looking magician character. Carell stars as the titular Vegas magician who loses his partner and then has to compete with a hipper magician (Carrey). In the previous set photos, Carell’s character looked to be channeling David Blaine in a dangerous-looking trick. These images of Carrey evoke another popular mainstream “magician”: Criss Angel.
While the premise could easily be turned into a lame, cheap joke comedy, the cast involved here compounded with the ridiculous-looking set photos have me hopeful that we’re in for a really good time once Burt Wonderstone opens. Don Scardino (30 Rock) is directing, and Burt Wonderstone is set for release sometime in 2013. Hit the jump to see the set photos.

Today in “Sequels No One Asked For” news, Universal is apparently keen on a follow-up to 2003’s Bruce Almighty. The original film, starring Jim Carrey, was a box office smash grossing almost $500 million worldwide. The studio unsuccessfully tried to spin off Steve Carell’s minor character from the first film in 2007 with the excruciatingly terrible Evan Almighty, and now Variety reports that the studio is developing a proper sequel as a starring vehicle for Carrey. They’ve already tapped Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (Hot Tub Time Machine, Yes Men) to pen a script (may I suggest Bruce Almightier for a title?). Hit the jump for more.

Well this was unexpected. Having just wrapped production on a big screen version of The Three Stooges, directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly are now hoping to move on to a sequel to 1994’s Dumb and Dumber. Deadline reports that the intention is to bring back the film’s stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to reprise their classic roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. Apparently a script has already been written by Sex Drive scribes Sean Anders and John Morris, who also co-directed the Adam Sandler/Adam Samberg comedy I Hate You Dad. The plan is for the Dumb and Dumber sequel to be the Farrelly brothers’ next directorial project. The original film’s producers Charles B. Wessler, Brad Krevoy, and Steve Stabler are returning as well.
You may remember that a painful sequel to the hit comedy, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, was produced in 2003 without the brothers involvement. Hopefully this new sequel will fare better. If Carrey and Daniels do indeed come back, this could actually be a lot of fun. There’s no word on the story or whether other characters from the first film will appear, but I’m hoping for a cameo by Petey and the blind kid all grown up. The only other film on Carrey’s schedule next year is the Steve Carell comedy Burt Wonderstone, and Daniels is currently filming Aaron Sorkin’s new series for HBO, so they could feasibly fit the film into their schedules. Hit the jump for a refresher on the art of graceful idiocy.

In quite the comedic pairing, Jim Carrey is currently in negotiations to star opposite Steve Carell in the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone. The story centers on a Las Vegas magician (Carell) who finds himself upstaged by a young, hip magician after breaking up with his partner. Don Scardino, one of the principal directors on NBC’s 30 Rock, is handling directing duties. Deadline reports that Carrey is in talks to join the cast, but there are no details as to what role Carrey will take on. Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) was recently commissioned to do “several weeks worth” of work on the script. The previous draft was written by Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Carrey and Carell would make a pretty great comedic duo, and the goofy magician premise seems right up their alley. This would be Carrey’s first role after this summer’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which performed fairly well at the box office. He’s been rumored for the music-oriented pic Can a Song Save Your Life? but we haven’t heard anything about his involvement since June. Carell was recently cast as the lead in Bennett Miller’s John du Pont film Foxcatcher.

Back in March 2010, we reported that Sony Pictures Animation was developing a 3D CGI movie based on the popular character Popeye. Now it looks like the movie may be finally moving forward as It’s on the Grid reports that Jim Carrey and Amy Adams will be voicing Popeye and his rail-thin girlfriend Olive Oyl, respectively. We’ve reached out to Sony for comment, but haven’t heard back from them. As for this potential casting, we all know that Carrey could voice Popeye in his sleep and Adams could probably do a great job with Olive Oyl. The real question is how a character like Popeye will translate into 3D CG because let’s face it: in a three-dimensional context, a guy with a ugly mug and bulging forearms looks a little creepy.
[Updated: Sony has now gotten back to us and informed us that the casting news is false and It's on the Grid has taken down the info from their story. There ya go. ]

Thank the Maker for YouTube. With the advent of the video-on-demand digital age, no longer is that TV movie role that Actor X did when he was 11-years-old lost forever, and now someone’s put together a compilation of 25 “before they were famous” first roles for our viewing pleasure. Did you know that Daniel Craig was in A Kid in King Arthur’s Court? How about Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Roseanne or Jake Gyllenhaal in City Slickers? No need to hit up Netflix, some choice scenes are now all in one place.
Hit the jump to watch the montage, which includes 25 sometimes painful scenes featuring Jim Carrey, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Ryan Gosling, Keanu Reeves, Nicole Kidman, Seth Rogen, Jake Gyllenhaal, Harrison Ford and more.

We’ve got a few casting stories for you this evening. First up, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in John Carney’s (Once) music-oriented film Can a Song Save Your Life?. The Sunday Business Post Online (via The Playlist) reports that Judd Apatow will produce the pic, which centers on “a washed-up A&R man who forms a passionate bond with a young singer-songwriter (Johansson) from out of town.” Carney wrote the screenplay, and Mark Ruffalo and Jim Carrey have been rumored for the male lead. Filming begins in New York next year.
Additionally, Wizards of Waverly Place star Jake T. Austin has landed the role of Huck Finn in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. Joel Courtney (Super 8) is in talks to take on the role of Tom Sawyer. Variety reports that Austin is in final negotiations to star in the adaptation of the Mark Twain classic, which Jo Kastner is directing with filming expected to get underway this August in Bulgaria. Hit the jump for the casting news of Mia Maestro joining Oliver Stone’s Savages.

Your kids are probably going to love Mr. Popper’s Penguins. I saw it an audience filled with kids and their parents, and the kids laughed throughout. They laughed when the penguins farted. They laughed when the penguins pooped. They laughed when the penguins fell down. They laughed when Jim Carrey made a funny face. The movie easily walks beneath the low bar set by what passes for family films and if you want to keep your kids amused for two hours and can’t find a shiny object, then Mr. Popper’s Penguins fits the bill. There’s nothing I can say against this film that makes it any less of a joy to kids who ask nothing more than funny faces, fart jokes, and slapstick. Instead, I’m fascinated by the film’s unsettling subtext..

As I said yesterday when I posted my interview with Jim Carrey, I’ve learned that if I wear my Goodfellas t-shirt during an on camera interview, I should expect whoever I’m speaking with to talk about the movie. This happened when I wore the shirt for my The Adjustment Bureau interview with Matt Damon, where he ended up talking about Scorsese’s gangster classic, and again when I spoke with Carrey.
Anyway, the reason I’m talking about my Goodfellas t-shirt is that I recently interviewed Carla Gugino for her new family film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Based on the 1938 children’s novel, Gugino plays Carrey’s ex-wife and she watches as her former husband starts to change after he inherits some penguins from his kooky father. During the interview, Gugino talks about her love for Martin Scorsese’s Casino and Goodfellas, what it was like to work with Carrey, and how she got involved with Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Hit the jump to watch. And you can watch the trailer here.

I’ve learned a valuable lesson: if I wear my Goodfellas t-shirt during an on camera interview, I should expect whoever I’m speaking with to talk about the movie. The last time I wore it was for The Adjustment Bureau, and I spent most of my time with Matt Damon discussing Martin Scorsese and his gangster masterpiece. Actually, if you missed that interview, it’s one of my favorites. Make sure to watch to the very end as Damon tells an awesome Godfather story.
Anyway, the reason I’m talking about my Goodfellas t-shirt is that I wore it when I interviewed Jim Carrey for his new family film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and like last time, we spent a lot of time talked about the film. Of course, we also talked about how he got involved with Mr. Popper’s Penguins (he admits to loving the animals) and the conversation even moved to the late/great Don Knotts at one point. Hit the jump to watch.

20th Century Fox has released 8 new clips from their upcoming family film Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Based on the children’s book of the same name, the film centers on a divorced New York real estate developer who inherits some penguins from his kooky father. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) the film stars Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury, Clark Gregg and Madeline Carroll. Hit the jump to check out the clips. Mr. Popper’s Penguins hits theaters on June 17th.

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for the family film Mr. Popper’s Penguins.
