The first trailer for Fox Searchlight’s Salvation Boulevard has been released. Starring Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Greg Kinnear and Jim Gaffigan, the comedy centers on the preacher of a mega church who frames an ex-hippie for a crime he didn’t commit. The flick premiered at Sundance where Matt wasn’t too thrilled by the finished product. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

In my review of Higher Ground, I noted that religion is a tricky topic but that it was easy to mock it. Salvation Boulevard can barely even manage that. The story features a mega church and celebrity pastor and there’s great fun to be made at the absurdity of these elements in modern evangelical Christianity. Instead, co-writer and director George Ratliff uses this setting as the thinnest of backdrops for a chase movie that goes absolutely nowhere.

Opening this weekend is Focus Features It’s Kind of a Funny Story. The film stars Keir Gilchrist as a stressed-out teenager who checks himself into a mental institution for five days and learns valuable life lessons while there. The film co-stars Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Lauren Graham, Viola Davis, and Jim Gaffigan.
At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, I was able to speak with Keir Gilchrist about making the film, what it’s like doing press at TIFF, what he recommends when in Toronto, working with Zach Galifianakis, how he prepared for the role, and a lot more. Opening September 3rd is New Line Cinema’s Going the Distance. The romantic comedy stars Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Ron Livingston, Jim Gaffigan, Kelli Garner, Rob Riggle, and Christina Applegate. The premise is Drew Barrymore and Justin Long meet and spend a summer together, and while neither expects it to last when Barrymore has to move back to San Francisco, the new couple decides to try and make a long distance relationship work even though their family and friends are against it.
While I think almost every angle on the romantic comedy has been played out, with the R rating and Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis playing Justin Long’s friends, I’m hoping for some honest and raw dialogue that will make this rom-com worth watching. Also, never underestimate Drew Barrymore’s appeal, as women love her. Anyway, we’ve been given eight clips from the movie and some images, so hit the jump to check them out – along with a more detailed synopsis:

The first trailer for Going the Distance, starring real life on and off again-ers Justin Long and Drew Barrymore, is making its rounds online. The romantic comedy follows the story of a summer fling that extends into a full-on long distance relationship.
Not exactly your cup of tea? Give it a shot. I was about to turn off the trailer when Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) popped in and saved the day (pun intended. I apologize.). The film will be the first fictional feature by Oscar-nominated, documentary director Nanette Burstein (American Teen, The Kid Stays in the Picture) and has an excellent supporting cast including Day, Christina Applegate, Ron Livingston, Jason Sudeikis, Jim Gaffigan, and Rob Riggle.
The film hits theaters on August 27th, 2010. Just in time for you to end your summer fling. Hit the jump for the full synopsis and to check out the trailer:

Here’s a couple quick pieces of casting news for your enjoyment. First up, Screen Daily reports that Ewan McGregor will play King Edward VIII in Madonna’s W.E. The English monarch abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga will play Simpson while Abbie Cornish will play a contemporary character in a parallel timeline. SD says it’s like Julie & Julia but it sounds more like 2002′s Possession to me.
Next up is a project I find far more interesting. According to Variety, Jennifer Connolley, Greg Kinner, and Marisa Tomei will join Pierce Brosnan, Jim Gaffigan, and Ed Harris in the comedy-thriller Salvation Boulevard. The film is about, “a former Deadhead who finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor.” That’s a great cast with a great premise so I hope that director George Ratliff (Joshua) can deliver a great film.

Here’s an easy way to get me on board with a movie: Pierce Brosnan, Ed Harris, and Jim Gaffigan joining up to star in a comedy. But according to Variety, the upcoming indie feature Salvation Boulevard isn’t going to just have that terrific leading cast, but it has this great premise:
The comedic thriller is set in the world of mega-churches in which a former Deadhead-turned-born again-Christian finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor.
You can’t go wrong setting your film in the world of mega-churches, which are ridiculous structures in their own right. No word on who plays the former Deadhead or the Pastor, but I’m just happy to see these guys together in a “comedic thriller,” especially two traditionally dramatic actors like Brosnan and Harris. George Ratliff (Joshua) will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Douglas Stone based off Larry Beinhart’s (Wag the Dog) book of the same name.

The journey of Sam Mendes is an awkward one. A talented stage director, his first film came to win best picture, and fueled a (not undeserved) backlash against him. His second film was coolly received, while his next two pictured showed a lessening presence. Revolutionary Road was delayed for a year and was not the academy bait that was hoped for. For the summer of 2009 his most personal, and most satisfying film was released, Away We Go, and it shows a mellowed director dealing with personal issue is a way more satisfying way. My review after the jump.

When this film came out I had no desire to see it. I thought it looked like a repeat of “Big” mixed with “It’s a Wonderful Life,” only lame and for tweeny boppers. I will be the first to admit I was wrong, this movie is a cocktail of both those films, but keeps things fresh and has a hell of a lot of laugh out loud moments. I typically shy away from the more “family friendly” films that come out because they have a tendency to talk down to the audience or over-sentimentalize things, but in my opinion “17 Again” is a comedy first, family film second. There are enough nerd humor, “adult-themed” jokes, and snappy dialogue to keep even the most avid naysayer smiling throughout. More after the jump:
Opening on June 5th is director Sam Mendes new movie “Away We Go”. Since all reviews are under embargo for a few more weeks, I need to be careful what I say.
However, I don’t think anyone at Focus Features will mind me saying that I loved the movie. Loved. “Away We Go” has a brilliant script, beautiful cinematography, great acting, and Sam Mendes directed this thing to perfection. While the film isn’t some big budget summer extravaganza, it’s a film absolutely worth checking out when it gets released. Especially if you’re in your twenties or thirties and still trying to figure life out.
Anyway, to help promote the film, we’ve been given 5 clips from the movie and the trailer, so check them out after the jump.
