Apologies for the lack of a Top 5 last weekend. I was so busy prepping to get married, and eventually getting married, that I had to cash in a “sick day” on the best weekend job a person could ask for. The good news is that I have no intention on making this a routine (either the “sick day” or the getting married) so we should be good to go on the regular Top 5 installments for the foreseeable future. The bad news is that I doubt the substantial pile of wedding cards filled with cash/gift cards will catch on as a routine either. You win some you lose some, I guess.

When you think of one of the most famous men in American history, you don’t immediately consider Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch) as the one who should tell his story.  But when you’re movie imagines Abraham Lincoln fighting vampires, perhaps it makes a little more sense.  In Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Benjamin Walker plays of one of our greatest Presidents with one small change to his life story: he fought vampires.  While it might sound a bit crazy, the secret to why it should work is that everything else is grounded in reality.  It’s one of the reasons Marvel movies work.  In Iron Man, everything is realistic except for the fact that you’re asked to believe a man can fly around in a metal suit.  Same with Hulk.  Everything is real except you’re asked to believe a man bombarded with gamma rays could become this green monster.   With Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, everything is historically accurate except for the vampires.

Last summer I got to visit the production when they were filming in New Orleans. I participated in a group interview with Bekmambetov and producer Jim Lemley.  They talked about grounding the film in reality, why they made certain casting decisions, the vampires, filming in New Orleans, the look of the film, the 3D, how they get involved, and so much more.  Hit the jump for more.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is selling itself as one of the most exciting genre films hitting this summer. To get people in the mood Fox hosted an event in Springfield, Illinois – the home of Lincoln’s tomb, and his library and museum. That evening director Timur Bekmambetov, writer Seth Grahame-Smith, producer Jim Lemley, and the film’s Abraham Lincoln himself Benjamin Walker were given a tour and hosted an event where they showed the film’s trailer, four film clips, and answered some questions.  After the jump, check out video from Lincoln’s Tomb, the vault where some amazing historical artifacts are kept, and a number of images.

For Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, we were taken to Springfield, Illinois to talk to star Benjamin Walker, director Timur Bekmambetov, producer Jim Lemley and writer Seth Grahame-Smith. They showed us the film’s trailer, producer Tim Burton’s introduction, a behind the scenes featurette, and gave us a Q&A for over 30 minutes. Here’s a few of the things they talked about:

• On casting Benjamin Walker, they saw him playing Bloody Andrew Jackson
• It was shot in Louisiana for budgetary reasons
• Writer Seth Grahame-Smith sees the film as like a superhero origin story
• Expect it to be bloody and scary
• There is the possibility of a sequel
• For the director, it was about finding the reality of the fantasy
• The original story came from seeing Twlight books and Lincoln biographies

Benjamin Walker (Flags of Our Fathers) was among the lesser known names of the shortlist — Walker, Adrien Brody, Timothy Olyphant, Josh Lucas, James D’Arcy, Oliver Jackson-Cohen — that screen tested for the lead role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  But 20th Century Fox appears eager to get into the Benjamin Walker business.  Walker was the first young actor cast as a student in the X-Men: First Class before he was dropped out to reprise his starring role in the Broadway musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.  In retrospect, that iconoclastically presidential role was the perfect preparation to anchor Fox’s summer tentpole: Variety reports Walker has closed a deal to star in Abraham Lincoln.

Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) will direct and co-produce with Tim Burton and Jim Lemley (9).  Seth Grahame-Smith wrote both the book and the adapted screenplay.  Hit the jump for an official synopsis for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, scheduled for release June 22, 2012.
