Jim Sheridan to Remake INTO THE WEST

Jim Sheridan is planning to go forward in his career by looking back at it.  Screen Daily reports that Sheridan is set to direct a remake of Into the West.  Sheridan co-wrote Mike Newell‘s 1992 Irish film about “two young boys two young boys who escape the poverty of their Dublin council estate on adventure ‘into the west’ to find a mystical horse recently stolen from them.”  Gabriel Byrne played the boys’ father, and the film co-starred Ellen Barkin, Colm Meaney, and Brendan Gleeson.  The new movie “will re-imagine the earlier film’s themes in a new US setting.”

I’m not necessarily against Sheridan, but his work has seriously gone downhill since 2002′s In America.  He even asked that his name be removed from his last film, Dream House.  Perhaps going back to one of his 90s films will break his current slump.

DREAM HOUSE Blu-ray Review

When a studio dumps a horror movie, or any movie, it usually comes after some tinkering. Sometimes things don’t come out the way they were expected, and they try to fix what they can, or make it a harder or softer cut to make it more marketable. With 2011’s Dream House, one expects a terrible movie that was butchered or messed with in such a way that the release version seems a shred of the former movie. The weirdest thing about the film is that it feels like they made the movie they set out to make. Sure, it didn’t turn out well, but at least it’s a complete thought. Jim Sheridan directs Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz in the story of a haunted family that seems like a decade-late riff on The Sixth Sense. Our review of the Dream House Blu-ray follows after jump.

Director Jim Sheridan Wants His Name Removed From DREAM HOUSE

It hasn’t been a great day for directors.  First, Pete Travis (Vantage Point) was locked out of the editing phase of the Judge Dredd reboot.  Now there is news that Dream House director, Jim Sheridan, had petitioned the Directors Guild of America over the summer to have his name removed from the project.  In retrospect, this would have been a blessing for the six-time Oscar-nominee since Dream House is currently lagging in the box office and is tanking critically.

Once upon a time, a director wishing to distance himself from a project would be replaced by the name “Alan Smithee,” aka “John Doe,” but this usage was discontinued in 2000.  Guild etiquette suggests that said director not divulge the circumstances surrounding this move, but thanks to the internet, we have the scoop.  Hit the jump for more details.

3 Clips from DREAM HOUSE Starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts

We have three clips from Jim Sheridan’s haunted house flick Dream House.  The movie isn’t being screened for critics (at least not in Atlanta) most likely because it is awful.  If it were a B-movie like Piranha 3D that doesn’t need critics, I would understand.  But this is a psychological horror film from an award-winning director and it stars Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts.  That’s James Bond, an Oscar-winner, and an Oscar-nominee as opposed to the forgettable cast of Shark Night 3D, which was also not screened for critics.

Because Universal would like us to market their movie even though they have no intention of letting us actually see it for review, I will now spoil the ending I just made up: “I was really surprised when Daniel Craig brushes his teeth with toothpaste he made from ground-up babies and kittens, and then screams racial slurs directly into the camera.”  That would probably be a terrible ending, but these clips aren’t too great either (I like that the graffiti house chimney has a squiggly line of blood coming out of it.  Subtle.)  Hit the jump to check out the clips.  Dream House opens Friday.

DREAM HOUSE Trailer [Updated with New Images]

The trailer for Oscar-nominated director Jim Sheridan’s (In the Name of the Father) Dream House has landed online. Starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts, the film centers on a family who move into a new home only to discover that a brutal killing took place in the residence years before. After watching the cut, I’m convinced that it either gives too much away or is brilliant in its misdirection. Given the talent of those involved with the pic, I’m inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Dream House opens later this year on September 30th. [Update: We've been sent some new images from the film which you can find after the jump]

The first image from Jim Sheridan’s (My Left Foot, Brothers) upcoming thriller Dream House has hit the web. The film stars Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts. The movie tells the story of a family that unknowingly moves into a home where several grisly murders were committed…only to find themselves the killer’s next target. Originally scheduled to be released next month, the release date was pushed back to September 30th of this year in order to accommodate reshoots that are needed when Craig gets a break from filming David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Hit the jump to check out the full image, as well as an official synopsis of the film.

Jim Sheridan’s Thriller DREAM HOUSE Delayed Due to David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 22nd, 2010 at 9:30 pm

Jim Sheridan’s (My Left Foot, Brothers) thriller Dream House (which stars Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts) was scheduled to open on February 18, 2011.  However, due to Universal and Sheridan wanting to do some reshoots, the film has been delayed until later in 2011.  While everyone would love to film the reshoots immediately and make their release date, Craig is busy shooting David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and won’t have a break in filming until the first two weeks of December.  With such a short time between the reshoots and the release date, the studio has decided to postpone the film until later in the year.  According to Variety, “Sheridan will lens the additional footage with the entire cast in Toronto, where Dream House was shot earlier this year.”

The one thing the studio and the filmmakers have going for them is they have yet to release a trailer or publicize the film.  Most moviegoers don’t have Dream House on their radar yet, so if the release date gets pushed until even the end of the year, they’ll never know the difference.  Hit the jump for the synopsis and more info:

BROTHERS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 3rd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

I’m not sure why Brothers is so shallow.  The plot of a man leaving to fight in a war, presumed dead, his wife developing an emotional connection to his brother, and then the resulting conflict which occurs when the man comes home alive.  The story feels almost biblical but Brothers prefers obvious emotional markers rather than create real conflict between the characters.  In the end, what should be a thematically rich and tense film becomes the story of a man who sacrificed his humanity in order to return to the human relationships that he now finds meaningless.  Thankfully, that man is played by Tobey Maguire who manages to build a full character while everyone else is left to function as plot devices.

New Trailer for BROTHERS Starring Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Jake Gyllenhaal

To put it kindly, I wasn’t exactly wowed when the trailer for Jim Sheridan’s “Brothers” hit back in July.  Now the second trailer is online and my interest in this movie is diminished almost to the point of indifference.  This new trailer, the one closer to the film’s release date of December 4th, is only a minute long and relies on Mr. Movie Voice to explain the plot.  It makes the movie looks like nothing but big emotional moments with no characters in between.  I’m hoping that the elements of Sheridan, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Jake Gyllenhaal combine to make a better film than I’m seeing from the trailers.  Check out the trailer after the jump.  It will only take a minute.

Daniel Craig Moves Into Jim Sheridan’s DREAM HOUSE

I just went off the reservation with my write-up of “Little Murder” but that’s because I’m just so happy I can report on something like that which carries no expectations.  But there’s also a story tonight about “Dream House” and it seems like both films share a common problem except one is directed by Jim Sheridan and stars Daniel Craig while the other feature Bokeem Woodbine and is directed by the guy who did “Hard Cash”.  Hit the jump to find out why “Dream House” doesn’t get my enthusiasm.

BROTHERS Trailer Starring Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tobey Maguire

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 4th, 2009 at 10:27 am

brothers_trailer_logo_slice_01.jpg

“Brothers”, the new film from Jim Sheridan (“In America”, “My Left Foot”), has such a wonderful premise for an honest story of emotional conflict: Natalie Portman plays a wife and mother whose husband (Tobey Maguire) goes missing while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan and presumed dead.  She finds solace in his brother played by Jake Gyllenhaal.  But then, it turns out that Maguire and the dying?  Eh, not so much.  He returns and you get a conflict so thick you could drizzle it over pancakes.

So how did they come out with a new trailer this bad?  The music choices are awful and the genres feel all over the place.  It starts out tragic, then it’s a romance, and then it’s a suspense-thriller.  And it’s fine in a completed film to have all those genres but in a trailer, you need to sell a cohesive idea and this trailer, with such great actors, looks like borderline parody.

Hit the jump to check it out and try not to cringe.  “Brothers” hits theatres on December 4th.
