Director Joe Johnston is making a radical departure for his follow-up feature after last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The Jurassic Park III helmer has signed on to direct the micro-budget thriller Not Safe for Work. Written by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, THR reports that the film centers on a young paralegal who is trapped in an office with a killer on a mission to destroy files for another corporation. Johnston is used to working with considerably larger budgets on films like The Wolfman and The Rocketeer, but Not Safe for Work will be made for a mere $2.5 million.
The pic is set up at Universal and will be made through Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Pictures. Blum is no stranger to the small budget/big profit model, as he produced all three Paranormal Activity films as well as one of the most profitable films of last year, Insidious. Captain America grossed over $360 million worldwide, so I’d say Johnston is allowed to do whatever the hell he wants with his follow-up picture. It’ll be interesting to see the director adapt to such a small scale, and I’m intrigued to find out what Johnston saw in the story that made him take such a big risk.

The Jurassic Park series is awe inspiring and deeply flawed; a game changer for effects, but story-wise mostly pedestrian. Steven Spielberg directed the first two films with an eye toward some of the most awe inspiring set pieces put to film, with stars like Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum stuck in the midst of dino-mayhem. For the third picture Joe Johnston took over and stripped the series down to its bare essentials. In terms of great dinosaur action these films deliver and are fun to revisit, even if there are scenes in all three that bog them down. Our review of the Jurassic Park Blu-ray trilogy follows after the jump.

Paramount has announced that the Blu-ray Combo Pack for Captain America: The First Avenger will hit on October 25th and they’ve released a trailer showing off some of the special features included on the disc. Among the special features will be a new Marvel One-Shot Short film starring Clark Gregg and a behind-the-scenes featurette for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. Since Captain America is a great movie, all these special features are icing on a delicious cake.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer, the cover art, and a list of all the special features included on the disc. There will also be a limited-edition 3D Blu-ray combo-pack for those who like their superheroes in pointless, post-converted 3D.

We now live in a time where there are so many different superhero movies released each year, that it’s completely warranted to make a list of the best and worst from the 12-month period. Yes, it’s a good time to be a nerd. Towards the top of many people’s 2011 list will be Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and we now know what the expect from the flick’s Blu-ray release. Along with an audio commentary from Johnston, we’ll be getting a number of featurettes that document everything from the technology behind Red Skull to Steve Rogers’ transformation from weakling to giant, 7 deleted scenes, and a trailer for The Avengers animated series. Hit the jump for the details, including a look at both Blu-ray covers.

With director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger set to hit theaters next week, Paramount has released the EPK (electronic press kit) which includes 4 movie clips, a Meet Captain America Featurette, and almost 9 minutes of behind the scenes footage from when they were making the movie (B-Roll). If you’re trying to stay spoiler free, I’d advise you to avoid watching these videos. But if you want to see as much footage as possible, hit the jump. The behind the scenes footage is really cool. Especially if you want to see what it was like on set.

Officially shifting into “we’re only a week away from releasing a summer blockbuster” mode, Marvel has released two new clips from Captain America: The First Avenger. The first showcases a nifty little fight sequence where Cap gets the chance to showcase his new found strength while the second provides an elongated look at a scene played pretty heavily throughout the film’s promotional materials. As I prepare to head to Comic-Con next week, I’m hoping the rumors of the pic screening early in San Diego turn out to be true.
Check out the clips after the jump. Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Stanley Tucci, Natalie Dormer, Sebastian Stan, and Dominic Cooper, director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters on July 22nd. With the release of Captain America: The First Avenger just over a week away, we’re doing our best to consolidate some recent happenings regarding the pic into one place. After the jump, you’ll find a new clip from the film as well as every image Paramount has released from it thus far. While a number of the images have been released previously, you’ll also find plenty of new shots included in the batch. You’ll also find information regarding possible (stress on the “possible”) early screenings of the film at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Directed by Joe Johnston (The Wolfman), Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Stanley Tucci, Natalie Dormer, Sebastian Stan, and Dominic Cooper. The film hits theaters on July 22nd.

Now that Michael Bay has wrapped his trilogy of Transformers films, it looks like he’s ready to move on to other exploding pastures. Since Paramount and Hasbro want to keep the fire burning on one of their biggest moneymakers, two major decisions lay ahead: when to release the next movie and who should direct it. Bay has been able to crank out Transformers film every two years since 2007, but his infrastructure, crew, and designs have remained in place as opposed to a new director who will, to some extent, have to start from scratch so as not to simply imitate Bay. Transformers 4 could come as early as summer 2013, but I would bet a summer 2014 date is more likely.
But who will direct it? Who can fill Bay’s expensive, nonsensical shoes? It needs to be someone who can manage a big budget and even bigger special effects. It’s not enough to make stuff blow up. You need to understand how to do it properly. After the jump you can check out my suggestions for six directors who could handle Optimus Prime and Friends.

Joe Johnston’s The Rocketeer is a charming throwback that flopped at the box office when it opened in 1991 but has deservedly built up a cult following in the last twenty years. At its core is a hero who doesn’t have superpowers or a dark secret. He’s simply a good guy with a jetpack and because jetpacks are cool, what more do you need? The movie even has Terry O’Quinn playing a completely sane (and therefore completely unbelievable) Howard Hughes. More importantly, it manages to conjure up an old-school feeling of adventure and I’m hoping that Johnston brings that tone to his new 1940s action-adventure flick, Captain America: The First Avenger.
But back to The Rocketeer, a team of French animators created a short 20th anniversary tribute to the film and to the property’s creator, Dave Stevens. Hit the jump to check out the delightful video.

The final theatrical trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger has landed online. While there is a lot to like about the cut, my favorite aspect is that it does a really nice job of setting up pre-super soldier Steve Rogers as someone who simply wants it more than other, more physically gifted, soldiers. I’m also looking forward to seeing the dynamic between Tommy Lee Jones’ Colonel Chester Phillips and Rogers play out in the pic as the “He’s still skinny” line you’ll hear in the trailer actually made me laugh out loud. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out the fantastic new poster that was released earlier today.
Directed by Joe Johnston, the film stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

We’ve got some Captain America news for you today. As with most Marvel movies, Captain America: The First Avenger will be getting a sequel. We learned back in February that The First Avenger scribes Stephen McFeeley and Christopher Markus had been tapped to start work on the screenplay for a sequel. Well now, even though the first film hasn’t even hit theaters yet, McFeeley recently spoke a bit about the follow-up, saying that they’re working on how to incorporate more period material into the sequel.
Hit the jump to see what he said, and to check out a new featurette from the film. Starring Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22nd in 3D.

A batch of new images from Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger have been released. A couple of them we’ve seen in the trailer, but some of them are brand new. The more I see of this project, the more excited I get. Hopefully everything comes together and Marvel goes out with a bang before next summer’s The Avengers. Directed by Joe Johnston, the film stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Hit the jump to check out the images. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

With the film hitting 3D theaters on July 22nd, Marvel and Paramount have released a new television spot for director Joe Johnston’s (The Wolfman) Captain America: The First Avenger. While there’s minimal chance that a 30-second spot will sway your opinion of the film one way or the other, this cut does feature Cap’ reminding the Red Skull that he’s “just a kid from Brooklyn.” As a direct result, it gets a “worthy of checking out” pass from yours truly.
The film stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn whose faulty attempt to enlist in the military eventually helps lead to his being transformed into a super solider that is dead-set on hunting Nazis. Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, and Dominic Cooper also star. You can hit the jump to check out the new television spot and click here for all of our previous Captain America: The First Avenger coverage.

Captain America: The First Avenger is scheduled for release on July 22 — I am amazed at just how much studios can work up to the deadline. Just yesterday, less than three months before release, director Joe Johnston shot another scene featuring Chris Evans as the titular superhero and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Times Square. Times Square is the most public place in America, so plenty of passersby were on hand to capture the action. You’ll find video and photos after the jump.
Captain America: The First Avenger also stars Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Toby Jones, and Stanley Tucci.

The first full-length trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger was released last week, and it proved to be outstanding. Now, Marvel has released a couple of set photos and a new image from the film. Directed by Joe Johnston, Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Hit the jump to check out the photos. The film opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.
