THE ARTIST Takes Homes Seven BAFTAs Including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor

I’m really hoping for some surprises on Oscar night if only to make things interesting, but it’s looking less likely every day. Last night The Artist nearly swept the British Academy Film Awards (essentially the British Oscars), taking home the prizes for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Music, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design. Meryl Streep was named Best Actress for The Iron Lady, while Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actress and Actor. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy wasn’t sent home empty-handed, as the spy thriller won Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. I was happy to see Senna get some well-deserved recognition, as the Formula 1 doc chronicling the life of driver Ayrton Senna was named Best Documentary.

While George Clooney seemed the favorite in the Best Actor Oscar race for his magnificent turn in The Descendants, The Artist’s Jean Dujardin could easily prove the spoiler. With the SAG Award in hand and now the BAFTA, the French comedian may very well step up to the podium come Oscar night. Hit the jump to see the full list of BAFTA winners. Gary Oldman wrapped up his 3-day, 7-film retrospective at New York’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema with a fun, extended Q&A after Wednesday night’s screening of his Oscar-nominated performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The first time Academy Award nominee fielded questions from a theater filled with hundreds of his fans with nearly an hour.  Oldman also hung around for autographs, pictures and additional questions.  Hit the jump for stories from the set of The Dark Knight Rises, his paralyzing doubt on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and what he thought while watching Heath Ledger as The Joker.

Casting Call: John Hurt Joins Bong Joon-Ho’s SNOW PIERCER; Jake Hoffman and Nikki Reed Set for Dubstep Thriller SNAP

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share with you this afternoon. First up, the cast for Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) thriller Snow Piercer has gained yet another stellar actor. In an interview with The Telegraph (via The Playlist), John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) revealed that he has joined the cast of the apocalyptic pic. Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, and Jamie Bell are set to star in the film as a group of train travelers learning to co-exist in a new ice age. Production is scheduled to get underway in March, and Snow Piercer is already shaping up to be one of my most anticipated projects of 2013.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY Review

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a crackling, intense, complex, old-fashioned spy-thriller…but you need to wait over an hour to get there.  Director Tomas Alfredson does a fantastic job of painting a rich 1970s setting that swings between London, France, Istanbul, and Budapest, but we have trouble getting our bearings as we jump across timelines and struggle to understand the wide cast of characters.  Terrific performances begin to peek out and try to surface but are smothered in an overdone attempt to obfuscate rather than intrigue.  Alfredson wants to put us inside the web of confusion of trying to uncover the truth, but he strings us along for too long.  At some point, the spy game must begin.

35 New Images from TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

Just a few weeks out from the US debut of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Focus Features has released a host of new images. The spy thriller that features Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Colin Firth, just to name a few, is set during the Cold War era and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) through his investigation of a possible double agent within MI-6. Based off of the 1974 British novel by John le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the first novel of the “Karla Trilogy” and the first film installment may spawn a franchise.

Since the UK saw a September release for the film, we have a host of clips, images and trailers that you can find here. But with the US release coming up, we’ll also have new interviews with the cast coming soon. IMMORTALS Review

“The director is God.”  It’s a saying that has been applied to directors of both stage and screen.  Directors (theoretically) control every aspect of a production and they marshal armies of various departments to bring forth a vision.  Director Tarsem Singh took the saying as the subtext for his new movie, Immortals.  Singh has always been an indulgent visual stylist, but with Immortals, he has bent a script to create a shining tribute to his own genius.  On the page, the movie is a standard “Hero from humble beginnings”, but in the hands of Singh, it becomes lush, outlandish, baffling, and above all, vainglorious.

The spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy continues to be one of my most anticipated films amongst the crowd of awards contender’s coming out this fall. The trailer is highly engrossing, the cast is top-notch, and the film debuted to strongly positive notices at the Venice Film Festival (not to mention that latest news that the pic may spawn a franchise). Now, a slew of character profiles have been released for the film. They give a rundown of pretty much every major character that appears, augmented by quotes from the actors who play them. It’s a pretty cool look into the espionage-fueled world of the film.

John Hurt, Sebastian Stan and More to Star in Ridley and Tony Scott’s Mini-Series Adaptation of LABYRINTH

Back in March we learned that Ridley and Tony Scott would be producing a mini-series adaptation of Kate Mosse’s best-selling novel Labyrinth, and now we finally have word on the cast coming together for the project. THR reports John Hurt (V for Vendetta) has just signed on to star in the project with Sebastian Stan of (Captain America: The First Avenger), Katie McGrath (Syfy’s Merlin) Emun Elliott (Game of Thrones) also signed on along with British actors Janet Suzman (Nicholas and Alexandria), Jessica Brown-Findlay (Downton Abbey), Vanessa Kirby (The Hour) and Italian actress Claudia Gerini (The Passion of the Christ). That’s an interesting assembly of talent for a mini-series that will likely get attention come Emmy time next year. The project is in the hands of director Christopher Smith (Black Death) working from a script by Primeval writer Adrian Hodges, and production is slated to begin in France next month. New Posters for WAR HORSE and MELANCHOLIA

New posters have gone online for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia.  War Horse continues to be a tough sell mainly because the lead character is a horse and the horse doesn’t talk.  You can put Mr. Ed in your World War I drama, Mr. Spielberg, but a non-talking horse?  How will that play in Peoria?  At least the poster is pretty-looking.

As for Melancholia, it’s a collection of character posters plus one interesting addition.  Von Trier gets his own poster.  It’s the first time I’ve seen a director who wasn’t also an actor in the movie get his or her own character poster.  Of course, Von Trier is a bit of a character and his poster even bears a fake seal proclaiming “Official Persona non Grata – Cannes 2011″.  Hit the jump to check out the posters.  War Horse opens December 28th.  Melancholia hits OnDemand on October 7th and opens in theaters on November 11th.

New Trailer for TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

The first U.S. trailer for director Tomas Alfredson’s (Let the Right One In) spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has landed online. While it’s essentially just a mashup of the film’s two U.K. trailers, the score alone is worth the price of admission. For those unfamiliar, the film is based on the John le Carré novel and follows an ex-spy as he attempts to track down a double agent within the ranks of the MI-6. Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch star.

A new poster and featurette for director Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are now available online. Starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Mark Strong, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch, the spy thriller is set during the Cold War and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) as he investigates a potential double agent within the MI-6 ranks. The cast is great, author John le Carré’s source material is highly celebrated and I love Alfredson’s Let the Right One In. To summarize, I can’t wait to see this movie.

First Clip from TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

The first clip from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has hit online and it has me even more eager to hear what the reaction to the film will be after it debuts at the Venice Film Festival this weekend.  In the clip, “Control” (John Hurt), the head of the “Circus” (aka Britian’s intelligence agency, MI6) instructs agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) in the hunt for the mole, assigning code-names to each of the suspects in the hunt.  The code names are “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Poor Man” and the fifth suspect is protagonist George Smiley (Gary Oldman), the retired MI6 agent who joins the investigation.  I think the use of putting pictures on chess pieces is a little heavy handed, but I love the tension of the scene and the way it’s shot.  So far, no film has gotten rave reviews out of Venice but I’m hoping will be hearing positive reactions to the spy thriller.

UK Trailer for MELANCHOLIA

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.

Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Awesome UK Teaser Trailer for TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

People in the UK must think they’re so cool because they’re getting Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy two months before us poor sods in the US see it.  And to all of our UK readers, I’ll tell you this right now: you’re cool because of your accents, but getting a first look at this movie doesn’t hurt either.  Technically, folks at the Venice Film Festival will see what looks like an exhilarating spy thriller, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for the reviews we’ll be seeing a couple weeks from now.  If anyone in the UK wants to fly me over to see the movie, I’ll give you all the tea in China.  I’ve been told you people like tea.

3rd Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s IMMORTALS

Relativity Media has released yet another trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Immortals and I’m starting to seriously doubt the film.  I liked what I saw when the teaser trailer debuted at WonderCon, but every trailer looks the same.  It’s the same footage again and again just in a different order.  Also, the plot is that King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) wants to bring down the gods so the gods hire Theseus (Henry Cavill) to stop him.  None of the trailers explain why the gods can’t do this themselves.  It’s kind of an obvious question and no amount of speed-ramping can answer it.
