Screenwriter John Orloff (Anonymous) has been hired to write the screenplay for Bryan Singer’s new adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.  The new adaptation won’t have anything to do with the excellent TV reboot, so it will be a new take on mediocre 1970s TV series.  Both series focused on a war between men and sentient machines, but thematically and narratively they went in vastly different directions.  There are currently no details on what Singer plans to do with his movie.  The 2003 series took the premise of the original series and transformed it into a political drama with a mystical storyline woven in to the overarching plot.  Orloff has a diverse screenwriting background—his credits also include A Mighty Heart (good!) and Legend of the Guardians (not good!)—so there’s no clear indication of what he might bring to the script.

It’s tough for me to give this new Battlestar the benefit of the doubt since Singer and now Orloff have chosen to put themselves in the shadow of the recent TV series rather than create a new outer-space adventure movie from scratch. [THR]

Screenwriter John Orloff Exclusive Interview LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE

by Christina Radish    Posted: September 25th, 2010 at 8:00 am

Coming from a show business family, acclaimed screenwriter John Orloff has always known that he wanted to be a storyteller. After initially thinking the path he would take to that would be as a director, he realized that he was a better writer and has been on that path ever since.

Orloff has spent much of his screenwriting career on historical projects based in non-fiction work, such as the Michael Winterbottom film A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie, and HBO’s World War II mini-series Band of Brothers. Now, he is getting to live his dream of writing science fiction and fantasy, as the animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, directed by Zack Snyder, opens in theaters on September 24th.

Check out what he had to say about how he got involved with writing Legend of the Guardians, what it was like working with Zack Snyder and how thrilling it is to hear his words spoken by such talented actors:

ANONYMOUS Screenwriter John Orloff Exclusive Interview

John Orloff is an acclaimed screenwriter who is quickly proving how adept he is at creating worlds that audiences can lose themselves in. He has the Zack Snyder-directed 3D animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole in theaters on September 24th, and then Anonymous, a period drama centered on the Shakespeare authorship question, directed by Roland Emmerich, out in the fall of  2011.

Although I spoke to him in an exclusive phone interview for Collider to promote the release of Legend of the Guardians, Orloff also talked in-depth about Anonymous and the approach in making it, as he is also an executive producer on that film. Because there was so much detail on what sounds like a very intricate, multi-layered story, I decided to split the interview in two, starting with what he had to say about Anonymous. Check out what he had to say about that film after the jump, and then check back later this week to read about how he got involved with Legend of the Guardians.

Director Roland Emmerich Talks Adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s FOUNDATION Trilogy as well as His Movie About William Shakespeare?!

I’m currently in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where I just got out of the press conference for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming disaster flick “2012″ during which he spoke about two of his upcoming projects.  One is his plan to adapt Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” which we first heard about in January of this year.

But the other film and the one he plans to start shooting this March came as a major shock to me because the movie is about William Shakespeare.  For those that don’t know Emmerich also directed “Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow” so this is a major shift for him.  The film is called “Anonymous” and he planned to make the movie back in 2005 under the name “Soul of the Age”.  This new script is by John Orloff (“Band of Brothers”, “A Mighty Heart”) and Emmerich says it’s his next movie. Hit the jump for details on both films.
