PULP FICTION Blu-ray Review

by Rob Vaux    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 8:21 am

What is there to say about Pulp Fiction that hasn’t been said before? Quentin Tarantino’s postmodern masterpiece arrived like a bolt of lightning in 1994 and the cinematic world hasn’t been the same since. It survived a rash of poorly conceived knock-offs, the nearly lethal overexposure of its creator, and a snubbing at the Oscars that ranks among the worst miscarriages of justice ever perpetrated by the Motion Picture Academy. Now, 17 years later, it finally arrives on Blu-ray; time has not tarnished its appeal one iota. Hit the jump for our review of Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray.

Robert De Niro and John Travolta to Star in Actioner KILLING SEASON

Robert De Niro and John Travolta are set to team up for the action pic Killing Season. Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson is set to helm the Appalachian Mountains-set film. The story centers on an American military veteran (De Niro) living in a remote cabin in the woods who is visited by a European tourist (Travolta). The two strike up an unlikely friendship and all goes well until the veteran realizes that the tourist is in fact a Serbian soldier bent on revenge. The film will see the two go toe-to-toe across the grueling Appalachian mountain landscape. The plot reminds me a bit of the 1997 pic The Edge, which had Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin facing off in the woods.

The script comes from Evan Daugherty, who also wrote Snow White and the Huntsman. De Niro recently signed on to star in The Comedian alongside Kristen Wiig for director Sean Penn. Production on Killing Season begins January 16th. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Earlier in the week, we learned from co-star Jason Statham that The Expendables 2 is set to begin filming in Bulgaria in a couple of weeks. At that time, he confirmed reports that both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis would take on substantial roles in the pic but stopped short of confirming other rumored names such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Tonight, some of those rumors can be put to rest as Sly Stallone has confirmed that both Norris and Van Damme will be in the film.

For a little more, including two other A-list names that may be joining the fun, hit the jump. The Expendables 2 is set to hit theaters on August 17th, 2012.

Filming on the sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s 2010 all-star action movie The Expendables is set to begin in September, and now rumors are starting to swirl about what action heavyweights will be along for the ride this time around. Shooting will be taking place in Bulgaria, and the CEO of Bulgaria-based NU Boyana studios David Varod recently dropped some huge names when listing the cast for The Expendables 2 to Novinite: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis.

We expected Stallone, Statham, Lundgren and Rourke to return, but this is the first time we’ve heard of Travolta, Norris and Vam Damme’s involvement (Stallone has been wanting Schwarzenegger and Willis to return for a while). However, just because Varod listed them off doesn’t mean all of these actors mentioned are definitely in the film. Hit the jump for more.

Al Pacino Joins Barry Levinson’s GOTTI: THREE GENERATIONS

Every time Al Pacino tries to escape the mob genre, they pull him back in.  THR reports that the loud actor will reunite with his You Don’t Know Jack director Barry Levinson for Gotti: Three Generations.  Pacino will play Gambino crime family underboss Neil Dellacroce, an associate and mentor to Gotti Sr. (John Travolta).  The cast also includes Kelly Preston as Gotti Sr.’s wife Victoria, Ella Bleu Travolta as Gotti Sr. and Victoria’s daughter Angel, Joe Pesci as Gotti Sr.’s associate Angelo Ruggiero, and Lindsay Lohan as John Gotti Jr.’s wife Kim.  Despite the cast and the director, I can’t shake the feeling that this movie is going straight to DVD, or, at best, will straight to HBO.

The remaining key roles to be cast are John Gotti Jr. and his sister Victoria.  James Toback (Bugsy) has been hired to revise Leo Rossi’s original script.

Director Barry Levinson Replaces Nick Cassavetes in GOTTI: THREE GENERATIONS

A couple weeks ago, director Nick Cassavetes dropped out of the crime drama Gotti: Three GenerationsVariety reports that Barry Levinson will now climb into the director’s chair.  The movie will center on the relationship between John Gotti Sr. (John Travolta) and his son, John Gotti Jr., who turned his back on mob life.  Joe Pesci will play Gotti’s deputy Angelo Ruggiero while Lindsay Lohan will play John Gotti Jr.’s wife, Kim Gotti.  And in a nice little bit of nepotism, Travolta’s 11-year-old daughter Ella Bleu also has a role in the film.

Gotti will mark a return to the gangster genre for Levinson.  He previously helmed 1991′s biopic Bugsy.  Hopefully, Gotti will also mark a return to Levinson making good movies, which he hasn’t done since 1999′s Liberty Heights.  His latest film, The Bay, will be released by Lionsgate, and Levinson is also attached to direct O.K.C., which is about the trial of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.  Filming on Gotti is expected to begin this fall for a late 2012 release date.

Oliver Stone’s Savages continues to round up an impressive cast even though Stone hasn’t made a good film in over a decade.  According to Variety, the latest talented actor to board the flick is Emile Hirsh.  There are currently no details on which role he’ll play, but he’ll be starring alongside Benecio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman.  The film is based on Don Winslow’s novel which centers a pair of marijuana growers (Kitsch and Johnson) who are forced to work in a Mexican cartel after their friend is kidnapped.  Stone is revising the script Winslow co-wrote with Shane Salerno.

Hirsch recently wrapped filming on William Friedkin’s dark comedy Killer Joe and he’s currently at work on The Motel Life alongside Stephen Dorff and Dakota Fanning.  Hit the jump to read the synopsis for Savages.

We heard last week Blake Lively was the frontrunner to play Ophelia in Oliver Stone’s adaptation of Savages, though for scheduling she had to choose between Savages and Oz: The Great and Powerful.  It seems Disney must look elsewhere for a Glinda the Good Witch, because Lively has signed on to Savages.  Additionally, John Travolta and Uma Thurman have joined a cast that is blossoming terrifically.  Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Salma Hayek, and Benicio Del Toro have long eyed roles in the film; Deadline writes confidently tonight that all four are on board.

Shane Salerno adapted the screenplay with Savages author Don Winslow.  The story centers a pair of marijuana growers (Kitsch and Johnson) who get into trouble with a Mexican drug cartel.  Read the full synopsis after the jump.

Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) has vacated the director’s chair for the biopic Gotti: Three Generations. Nicolas Cage and John Travolta May Re-Team for SHRAPNEL and SEA TRIAL

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 25th, 2011 at 7:51 am

It’s been almost fifteen years since Face/Off, and Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are looking at not one but two indie thrillers where they can compete to chew the most scenery.  Vulture reports that the actors may re-team on Shrapnel, which is about “a former Bosnian soldier who seeks vengeance against the American who badly wounded him by disguising a deadly war game as a friendly backwoods hunting trip.”  I wonder if Cage and Travolta are arguing over who gets to play the Bosnian and put on the most atrocious accent.

Evan Dougherty’s script for Shrapnel was on the 2008 Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) and had John McTiernan attached to direct.  However, last October McTiernan was thrown in jail for perjury in the Anthony Pellicano Hollywood wiretap case.  He’s currently out on bail and appealing the sentence.  Filming on Shrapnel is set to begin in June, but Vulture doesn’t mention if McTiernan is still attached.

Hit the jump to learn about the other project Cage and Travolta are considering.

John Travolta in Talks to Play GOTTI

John Travolta could soon be making a turn as one of America’s most recognizable criminals.  The actor is said to be in serious talks with producer Marc Fiore to make a turn as mob boss John Gotti, Sr. in Fiore Films’ Gotti.  When asked about the potential casting, Fiore told EW’s Inside Movies:

“We would love to have him. He’s a terrific actor. John Gotti, Sr. — he’s an icon. And so is Travolta … The Gottis have an image already. People know who they are. You can’t just be a good actor, you have to be a great actor who can become John Gotti.”

Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) is also in talks with Fiore to direct Leo Rossi’s screenplay with the film aiming for a summer 2011 shoot.  Although Gotti has yet to officially name any cast members and/or a director, Fiore has his sights set high with the project telling the same EW report that, “it’s going to be the new Godfather.”  For his sake, I hope those who miss the moon really do land among the stars.

Director Adam Shankman Says HAIRSPRAY 2 is Dead

Director Adam Shankman has told the British press that Hairspray 2 is dead.  He said:

“I’m going to kill that rumour now, that got killed,” Adam said in Hollywood.  He added: “It’s ok, I was so happy with the first one, let’s leave well enough alone. It’s all good.”

Even though the 2007 film grossed over $200 million at the worldwide box office and starred John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow and Zac Efron, it seems they could never crack the code to make a sequel work.  Back in April of 2009, Shankman talked about the Hairspray sequel at the 17 Again press day.  Hit  the jump for more:

OLD DOGS Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: March 18th, 2010 at 6:39 am

old_dogs_movie_poster_01.jpg

That Robin Williams and John Travolta made a terrible comedy together is no surprise, the only notable aspect is that it was made in 2009 and called Old Dogs. Neither is above doing shit, and shit is what they made. But it’s interesting to think of how many times the two could have been paired: It could have been done in the early 80′s as a miss-matched partners comedy. It could have been done any time in the 1990′s post-Pulp Fiction. And had this film come out in the mid-to-late 90′s, it would have been almost the same film too. The two star as ad execs with Williams finding out the woman (Kelly Preston) he married on a lark had twins and is about to go to jail. The kids need looking after and these long time bachelors have to find out if they can be parents. My review of Old Dogs after the jump.
