The first trailer for Mark Steven Johnson’s action thriller Killing Season is now available.  Starring John Travolta and Robert De Niro as two military veterans, the movie pits them against each other in a test for survival when past grievances bubble to the surface.  This one came completely out of left field and this trailer hints at just why that might be.  I have no idea why De Niro or Travolta signed on, unless it was to take another crack at an action film, but this first look doesn’t exactly promise the best work of their careers.  At least Travolta has another bizarre style of facial hair to add to his repertoire; this iteration might top Battlefield Earth and Swordfish.

You will know if you are the target audience for Killing Season as soon as you hear the tagline: “The purest form of war is one on one.”  So, are you in?

If somehow you’re still on the fence: Robert De Niro plays a military veteran who retreats to a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains to forget his experience in the Bosnian War.  He befriends a European tourist (John Travolta) who—surprise!—is a former Serbian soldier out for revenge.  Thus begins the purest form of war.  Travolta’s Serbian accent alone may be worth the price of admission when Killing Season, directed by Mark Steven Johnson, opens on July 12.  Milo Ventimiglia and Elizabeth Olin co-star.  Hit the jump to see the first batch of images and the trailer.

Oliver Stone has always hit home runs controversially and commercially, but lately he’s been striking out critically. Savages, which came out back in July, is a break from Stone’s controversial oeuvre. Revolving around a drug cartel kidnapping and an unlikely friendship, Savages is one well-crafted, sexy-ass slugfest. It’s more U-Turn Stone than W. (I have no idea what Wall-Street: Money Never Sleeps was supposed to be) and despite its mediocre run in theaters (nothing this summer fared well in the shadow of The Avengers), it was one of the most entertaining films of summer 2012. Is John Travolta about to pick up the mop and slop bucket in the leading role of The Toxic Avenger remake?  Probably not, but that’s the rumor of the day.  The original 1984 film from Troma Entertainment featured nerdy janitor Melvin (Mark Torgl) being tossed into a barrel of nuclear waste by a pack of bullies.  He then became the hideous, yet superpowered Toxic Avenger (Mitch Cohen).  The remake, directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) from a script by Daniel C. Mitchell, has apparently been re-imagined as a family-friendly, pro-environment PG-13 flick (completely different from the original B-film that was filled with nudity, sex and grotesque violence).  Travolta simply does not fit as the hero of this picture, but hit the jump for what role may suit him, along with the synopsis and trailer for the original film.

The drama Savages, from three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone, follows entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), and their shared girlfriend O (Blake Lively), who run a lucrative business raising some of the best marijuana ever developed.  But, the legendary weed of these Laguna Beach heroes soon catches the interest of the Mexican Baja Cartel, headed by the merciless Elena “La Reina” (Salma Hayek).  Along with her brutal enforcer Lado (Benicio Del Toro) and her head attorney Alex (Demian Bichir), Elena demands a partnership which she ensures by kidnapping that which they love most, and what was once a peaceful and easy lifestyle becomes a high-stakes battle of wills.

At the film’s press day, actor Taylor Kitsch talked about his reaction to director Oliver Stone wanting him for the role of Chon, how he prepared for the more intimate scenes in the film, what it was like to shoot his intense confrontation with John Travolta, the incredible attention to detail on set, how he felt about the ending, and his desire to stay away from projects with a lot of green screen for awhile.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Two new TV spots have been released for Oliver Stone’s upcoming crime drama Savages.  The film centers on two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins (Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel.  I’m a big fan of Kitsch and I’m hoping Savages is a success this year following the commercial disappointments of John Carter and Battleship—he was swell in the criminally underseen John Carter and his charisma is a big part of what makes Battleship semi-enjoyable.  These TV spots confirm that Eminem’s “Til I Collapse” is the unofficial theme song of Savages, and I’m actually really looking forward to an Oliver Stone film for the first time in a long time.

The first TV spot for director Oliver Stone’s Savages has gone online.  The film stars Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson as two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel.  Though Stone’s recent output hasn’t exactly been stellar, Savages looks to put him back in Platoon/Natural Born Killers territory and I’m eager to see his version of a large-scale action pic.  This TV spot does a fine job of setting up the plot, but I’m not the biggest fan of song choice.  Nevertheless, I like the footage we’ve seen thus far and the very talented Kitsch deserves to have at least one successful release this year.  Here’s hoping for the best.

After yesterday’s brief teaser, the full trailer for Oliver Stone‘s Savages has gone online.  The film stars Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson as two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel.  The movie looks like a fun change of pace for Stone, and a bit of a throwback to Natural Born Killers, but without the muddled message on violence and media.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Stone has worked in a comment on America’s War on Drugs, but at least it looks like he’s surrounded it with a slam-bang action flick.

Earlier this week, we showed you the first poster for Oliver Stone‘s crime-thriller Savages.  Today, teaser footage from the film has been released.  The film stars Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson as two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel.  You won’t gather any of that from the 15-seconds of footage, but you will pick up that Stone has taken a page from Tony Scott‘s playbook of sweaty characters and over-saturated cinematography.
