This time last week I was two movies into the triple feature I teased the last time we met. While I can’t say I was overly impressed by Gangster Squad, both Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained made their respective cases as qualified Best Picture nominees. Of the two, Zero Dark‘s unrelenting final act not only made it my top pick of the day but also provided some of the most sustained tension I can remember experiencing in a movie theater. Having now seen it for myself, I must say that I wholeheartedly agree with those who have voiced their disbelief at Kathryn Bigelow‘s Best Director Oscar snub.

The unexpected pairing of comedy star Johnny Knoxville with action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger works surprisingly well in Kim Jee-woon’s The Last Stand.  Schwarzenegger stars as small-town sheriff Ray Owens who needs access to the weapons kept by resident military history buff, Lewis Dinkum (Knoxville).  Their on-screen chemistry provides some of the best light moments in the movie. I recently had a chance to talk to them about their experience working with each other, as well as finding out their favorite weapons and sequences to film in The Last Stand.  For more on the film, watch the red band trailer and all our previous coverage.

There’s no better action movie combo than Arnold Schwarzenegger and big guns, so it’s great news that The Last Stand has both in spades. Making his return to the lead role of a big, bold action film, Schwarzenegger stars as retired LAPD officer turned border town sheriff, Ray Owens. When a notorious cartel leaders escapes from FBI custody, only Owens and his patchwork band of lawbringers stand between the criminals and the Mexican border. Adding a bit of fun alongside Schwarzenegger’s brawn is Johnny Knoxville, who provides a necessary service to the department as well as his unique brand of humor.

A new full-length trailer for director Kim Jee-Woon‘s actioner The Last Stand has been released.  The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the old sheriff of a sleepy border town who’s called to action when a drug kingpin flees an FBI prisoner convoy, and tries to make his way to Mexico.  This trailer gives us a better look at the action outside of the border town involving Forest Whitaker‘s law enforcement character and also highlights some of the lighter aspects of the pic.

If you like your movie trailers short on plot, heavy on the ad-libbing and redder than a Romney state, then you’ll love this new red-band effort from Movie 43.  The Peter Farrelly ensemble comedy stars everyone you’ve ever heard of in Hollywood and even some you haven’t.  Movie 43 has released another red-band trailer previously, but the new one mostly focuses on a stream of improv from Jason Sudeikis who is admiring Kristen Bell’s crotch.

Starring Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Halle Berry, Leslie Bibb, Kate Bosworth, Gerard Butler and everyone else, Movie 43 opens on January 25th, 2013.  Hit the jump to see the new red-band trailer.

Magnet Releasing has the unveiled the first trailer for Nature Calls.  Since Nature Calls is about a group of obscene men who take a group of foul-mouthed boy scouts on a camping trip, you better believe it’s a red band trailer.  When executed well, this particular comedy subgenre can be very funny.  And with a cast led by Patton Oswalt, Johnny Knoxville, Rob Riggle, and Patrice O’Neal, the stars range from funny to very funny.  That does not come across in the trailer, which is artificially crass and grating.  But that doesn’t mean that writer/director Todd Rohal can’t pull it off at feature length.  Here’s hoping.

Nature Calls hits VOD on October 4 followed by a theatrical release on November 9.  Watch the red band trailer after the jump.

Renee Zellweger is looking to try her hand at directing.  Variety reports that Zellweger will make her directorial debut with 4 ½ Minutes, a comedy that takes place in the New York City stand-up world.  The actress would also star in the pic opposite Johnny Knoxville, who will play “a commitment-phobic, train-wreck of a comedian whose life is falling apart when he takes a job looking after the genius son of single mom P.J. Andersen (Zellweger).”  The script by Anthony Tambakis (Warrior) is based on the life of comedian Dov Davidoff.

Zellweger hasn’t exactly been prolific as of late, with her last feature film being 2010’s My Own Love Song.  I can’t say the prospect of Zellweger taking on the stand-up comedy world is incredibly enticing, but it’d be nice to see a pleasantly surprising directorial debut from the Oscar-winning actress.  Production on 4 ½ Minutes is set to get underway in NYC in February.

The first trailer for Kim Jee-Woon‘s The Last Stand has gone online.  Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the old sheriff of a sleepy border town who’s called to action when a drug kingpin flees an FBI prisoner convoy, and tries to make his way to Mexico.  It’s a good premise for nice little action-thriller, but Schwarzenegger seems totally miscast.  He’s just not really meant for small movies because he’s a big persona.  There’s nothing subdued about him.  So when a huge guy with a thick Austrian accent is wandering around a small town like it’s no big deal, he seems horribly out of place.  Maybe it will work better in context, and I really like the action on display from Kim Jee-Woon.  It’s a nice break from the shaky-cam antics other directors may have brought to the picture.

You’ll see a little bit more of Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables 2 than you did in the first film, but once The Last Stand rolls in next January, the whole screen belongs to the former Governor.  We previously brought you the first image from the film, but now we’re happy to share an official synopsis and poster.  The actioner from director Ji-woon Kim stars Schwarzenegger as the aging sheriff of a border town, which happens to be the last hope of keeping a drug cartel leader from fleeing the country.  The Last Stand, also starring Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Peter Stormare, Genesis Rodriguez and Zach Gilford, opens January 18th.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis and poster.

In 1995, Will Smith starred in the first of three back-to-back films that would rocket his career into superstardom and solidify his status as a box office king.  He kicked things off with Michael Bay’s feature directorial debut, Bad Boys, followed by the large-scale sci-fi actioner Independence Day, and rounded things off with the franchise-starter Men in Black.  The third installment in the sci-fi comedy series, Men in Black 3, just opened in theaters and now Men in Black and Men in Black II have been released on Blu-ray to mark the occasion.  Hit the jump for our review of both films on Blu-ray.

The first trailer for The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz’s feature directorial debut Fun Size has landed online.  The comedy centers on a sarcastic teen (Victoria Justice) who is forced to take her little brother-trick-or-treating on Halloween only to lose him along the way. She must enlist the help of her best friend and a couple of “non-cool” kids in order to find her brother before the night is over.  There are a few funny bits sprinkled throughout this trailer, but on the whole it skews a lot younger than I was expecting from Schwartz (he also created NBC’s Chuck and co-created Gossip Girl).  The highlight appears to be Suburgatory star Jane Levy, who recently nabbed the lead in the Evil Dead remake.

The first trailer for the animated feature Epic, from 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios, has landed online.  The story tells of a hidden land deep in the forest where the battle between the forces of good and evil continues under our very noses.  A teenage girl is magically transported into their secret universe where she must combine forces with an assortment of colorful characters in order to save both worlds.  In this first trailer at least, the film comes off as a more serious version of Ferngully.  The visuals are pretty great, but the juxtaposition of the super important-sounding Snow Patrol song seemed a bit off.  That said, I’m interested to see how the makers of Ice Age and Rio tackle this fantastical story, especially in the shadow of this year’s Rise of the Guardians.

It appears that another Jackass film is on the way, but with a possible twist.  Per Paramount has been registering domain names for titles like “jackass4movie.com”, “badgrandpamovie.com”, and “jackass4badgrandpa.com”, suggesting that a fourth entry in the Jackass franchise is in the works.  Those wondering what the “Bad Grandpa” subtitle means probably haven’t seen the first three movies, as a prominent sketch features Johnny Knoxville and Spike Jonze hitting the streets in high quality old people make-up and participating in various shenanigans.  Hit the jump for more, including a clip of the sketch.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios have announced the all-star voice cast for their new 3D CG action-adventure comedy, Epic.  The film, from the creators of Ice Age and Rio, will feature Beyonce, Aziz Ansari, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried and Johnny Knoxville.  The story tells of a hidden land deep in the forest where the battle between the forces of good and evil continues under our very noses.  A teenage girl is magically transported into their secret universe where she must combine forces with an assortment of colorful characters in order to save both worlds.  In addition to the stellar voices behind the characters, Epic will be directed by Chris Wedge who won an Academy Award for his 1999 short, Bunny and co-director of 2002′s Oscar-nominated  Ice Age.  Epic will transport into theaters May 24, 2013.  Hit the jump for more.
