Director Jon Turteltaub Takes on Sumo Comedy A MATTER OF SIZE

What are overweight people to do when diet and exercise are simply not working? The answer: become sumo wrestlers. That’s the premise behind A Matter of Size, a remake of a 2009 Israeli movie directed by Sharon Maymon and Erez Tadmor. The re-imagining will be directed by Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) from a script by Howard Franklin (The Big Year). The Paramount project will be produced by David Permut, whose Permut Presentations owns the remake rights to the original property. Hit the jump for more on A Matter of Size.

NATIONAL TREASURE Director Jon Turteltaub to Helm LAST VEGAS

After going the big expensive blockbuster route with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, director Jon Turtletaub is scaling back.  THR reports that Turteltaub will direct the Las Vegas-set comedy Last Vegas (oh, it’s a pun.  Now I get it).  Written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), “the story centers on a quartet of retired boomers who are called upon for a Vegas bachelor party by their friend, a ladies man who is finally settling down and marrying a woman half his age.”  Or to put it another way, it’s The Hangover with old people.

This is going to be a project that comes down to casting and it has to be more than just “Oh, old people.  You’re supposed to be tired and sleepy but instead you’re raucous and adventurous!  Wacky.”  Back in April 2010 we reported that Fogelman had earmarked a role for Jack Nicholson, and it definitely sounds like a project he’d be well-suited to smirk his way through.

6 Directors Who Could Take Over the TRANSFORMERS Franchise

Now that Michael Bay has wrapped his trilogy of Transformers films, it looks like he’s ready to move on to other exploding pastures. Since Paramount and Hasbro want to keep the fire burning on one of their biggest moneymakers, two major decisions lay ahead: when to release the next movie and who should direct it. Bay has been able to crank out Transformers film every two years since 2007, but his infrastructure, crew, and designs have remained in place as opposed to a new director who will, to some extent, have to start from scratch so as not to simply imitate Bay. Transformers 4 could come as early as summer 2013, but I would bet a summer 2014 date is more likely.

But who will direct it? Who can fill Bay’s expensive, nonsensical shoes? It needs to be someone who can manage a big budget and even bigger special effects. It’s not enough to make stuff blow up. Jon Turteltaub to Direct Romantic Comedy UNREASONABLE DOUBT for Universal

National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub is in negotiations to direct and produce the romantic comedy Unreasonable Doubt for Universal. THR reports that the studio recently acquired the comedy from screenwriter Marc Klein (Serendipity) and is setting the film up with Andrew Panay (Wedding Crashers) to produce alongside Turteltaub.

The film centers on two jurors who fall in love during a court case. When Steve spoke to Turteltaub last summer, the director was about to read the first act of National Treasure 3. Not much further has been reported on the sequel as of late, and with Turteltaub signing on to Unreasonable Doubt, one would assume that the third Treasure film is a ways off.

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Blu-ray Review

The development process is such that something that may have started out as a fairy good idea can mutate to serve too many masters. This much is certain, 2010’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice seems to have begun as an idea to turn the beloved short in Walt Disney’s Fantasia into a feature length film. But that short can’t really lead to a narrative, only one set piece. So instead the creators had to borrow from the popular myths of the time, specifically Harry Potter. And so Jay Baruschel is Dave, the hapless college student who experienced magic as a child (but no one believed him), but is actually a secretly awesome magician. He is taken in by Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) to be Blake’s apprentice and to learn the ways of magic to protect himself from Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). With Walt Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice coming out this Wednesday, it’s time for my last exclusive interview and it’s with director Jon Turteltaub.  Since I was able to speak with him at this year’s WonderCon, I made sure to ask him different questions when we talked at the press junket.  Also, when I spoke to him at WonderCon, I hadn’t seen the movie.

During the interview we talked about the first screening the night before – which featured a lot of the cast and the press in the same theater. We also talked about the editing process, how he picked the music and how expensive it is for certain songs, box office and critical reaction, what will be on the DVD/Blu-ray, how awesome Jay Baruchel is, and, of course, I got an update on National Treasure 3.  As usual, the interview is time indexed so you can watch what interests you.  Hit the jump to check it out:

With Walt Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice coming out this Wednesday, you may have noticed an abundance of coverage on the film.  If you missed it…here’s the press conference with Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Teresa Palmer, Toby Kebbell, director Jon Turteltaub & Jerry Bruckheimer, my exclusive interview with screenwriters Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, and my exclusive interview with Toby Kebbell.  Anyway, I’ve still got a few more exclusives to post and up next is  my interview with Teresa Palmer.

After the press conference ended, I was able to sit down with Miss. Palmer and we had a very informal conversation about making movies and how she gets ready for each of her films.  We also talked about watching Sorcerer’s Apprentice for the first time the night before and how editors have a lot of power over your performance.  Finally, towards the end of the interview we talked about I Am Number Four – which she’s currently filming.  She said she gets to use her Australian accent in the film and her character is a martial artist with tattoos.  It’s a great interview so hit the jump to check it out:

Opening this Wednesday is Walt Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  To promote the film, the studio held a press conference here in Los Angeles with Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Teresa Palmer, Toby Kebbell, director Jon Turteltaub & Jerry Bruckheimer and they let me videotape it.  If you read Collider on a regular basis, you know studios only let you record roundtable interviews/press conferences with audio recorders and not video, so a big thank you to Disney for letting me use my camera.

Also, while I dread attending press conferences as you can almost never get a great conversation going and in turn the interviews suffer, I think you’ll enjoy watching the video as you can see everyone’s reaction answering the questions and you’ll laugh at some of the answers.  Press conferences usually don’t translate well to the written page.

As you might expect, they talk about what got them involved in the project, what it was like making the movie, what they have coming up, why it isn’t in 3D, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to check it out:

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Featurette “Fantasia: The Coolest Scene Ever”

I might be in the minority, but I’m really looking forward to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  While I’m not entirely sure what to expect from director Jon Turteltaub’s movie, based on the trailers, it look like it’s going to be a fun ride and anything that has Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel as master and apprentice has my money.

While I don’t know anyone that’s seen the finished film, the junket is this week in Los Angeles.  That means reviews will start to hit Twitter and Facebook in the middle of the week.  If I’m allowed to say what I thought, you can expect a tweet.  Until then, Disney has released a new featurette called “Fantasia: The Coolest Scene Ever” and as you might expect from the title, the filmmakers share how it all began – with an 8 minute scene of classic animation – and take us on the journey of how the film got made and the inspiration of Fantasia. New Trailer for THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Starring Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel

Disney unveiled a new trailer for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, and it promises a healthy supply of fun to go with the abundant special effects.  Inspired by the same source material as the animated classic Fantasia, Apprentice stars Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel as “a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.”  Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) directs from a script by Matt Lopez, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard.

Universal Studios New York Street Backlot Video – Watch Ron Meyer, Steven Spielberg, Jon Turteltaub and Others Talk About the Rebuilt Studio

As you may have seen by the abundance of coverage (video of the press conference featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven Spielberg, tons of images of the new backlot, interview with Jeff Zucker), I attended the opening of the new Universal Studios New York backlot yesterday.  In attendance were tons of VIP’s as well as media from around the world.  While I thought I was done posting coverage, I was provided a short 4 minute video that I thought you’d all enjoy.

The video features Universal President Ron Meyer narrating why the backlot is so important to Universal and how films like Back to the Future and Blues Brothers were filmed in the area that burned down.  Shortly after, Steven Spielberg talks about how he got involved in the rebuilding and he explains how when he heard about the fire, he immediately rushed down to the studio.  Of course the video has a positive ending as the studio just spent a lot of money making the New York backlot even better and the video features Jon Turteltaub and Brian Grazer explaining how impressed they were.  Hit the jump to watch:

New Posters for SHREK FOREVER AFTER and THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

DreamWorks and Walt Disney have released new posters for Shrek Forever After and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  Of the two, I really dig the The Sorcerer’s Apprentice poster as it’s simple and effective.  Also, rather than screaming who directed, starred or produced the movie, it’s selling you more on the mystery and magic – which is what you want to do with this film.  Check out the posters after the jump.

At this weekend’s WonderCon in San Francisco, I was able to interview director Jon Turteltaub about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and National Treasure 3.  During the interview he talked about filming in NYC, Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel, what did it mean to him to direct Sorcerer’s Apprentice, 3D, what does he geek out over, and what’s the status of National Treasure 3.

The big news for National Treasure fans is it sound like the rumors of the next one taking place in Europe are accurate and Disney wants NT3 to be his next film.  But he’s still not sure what he’ll do next.  We also talked 3D and he revealed he wanted to do Sorcerer’s Apprentice in 3D but when he pitched it to Disney, they didn’t want to do it.  I then brought up would he shoot National Treasure 3 with 3D cameras.  Hit the jump to check out my exclusive interview:
