Exclusive: Lance Reddick on FRINGE and THE WIRE

While I’m extremely fortunate as I get to interview a lot of actors, that doesn’t mean I’m a huge fan of everyone I speak with.  Sometimes you talk to people because it’s your job.  But when I saw Lance Reddick walking down the red carpet at last week’s Saturn Awards, my reporter hat got put away and I spoke to him as a fanboy.  If you’ve ever seen his work on David Simon’s amazing show The Wire, I’m sure you feel like I do about his awesome work on the show.

Of course with Reddick currently on one of my favorite shows, Fringe, we spent most of the time talking about what happened last season and what’s coming up this season.  He also told me he’s coming to Comic-Con for the first time next month and how he has a music CD coming out soon.  Hit the jump to watch the interview and make sure to buy The Wire if you’ve never seen it as it’s one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen.

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 29th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

For fans of our podcast Running Dialogue, I would like to apologize for not posting these on time.  Our fantastic producer, Alejandro Leal, has been delivering them on time, but I’ve fallen behind.  With this in mind, I hope you’ll accept our two most recent episodes together in one article.  In Episode 10, we discuss Splice, Get Him to the Greek, and talk about the repercussions of MGM’s financial meltdown.  Episode 11 has us talking Toy Story 3, Jonah Hex, and the dearth of quality films so far this summer.  As always, my partners in crime are Curt Holman of Creative Loafing Atlanta and Russ Fischer of /Film.

I’ve also included a list of all the movies we’ve recommended so far after the jump.  Click here to listen to Episode 10 and click here to listen to Episode 11.  Finally, click here to add Running Dialogue to your RSS feed.

Taking the guesswork out of my job completely, Pixar extended its run of impressive box office performances on Friday with the release of Toy Story 3. Debuting in 4,028 theatres, including a record-setting 2,463 3D venues, Buzz and Woody took in an estimated $41 million – nearly double the previous first day record for a Pixar release. With overwhelmingly glowing reviews to match the film’s built-in, um… buzz, Toy Story 3 will easily top The Incredibles’ $70.5 million opening weekend record and may even surpass Shrek the Third to claim the all-time animated opening record of $121.6 million by this time Monday. And then there’s Jonah Hex. The weekend’s other major release notched a puny $2 million on Friday from its 2,825 locations on its way to a weekend in the $6 million range – only slightly better than MacGruber. Full details on this weekend’s highs and lows when you check back tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Toy Story 3 $41,000,000 $41
2 The Karate Kid $8,900,000 $86.1
3 The A-Team $3,900,000 $39.9
4 Shrek 4 $2,500,000 $219.9
5 Jonah Hex $2,000,000 $2

JONAH HEX Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 18th, 2010 at 12:48 am

Jonah Hex doesn’t seem like it runs from a script as much it runs from an outline.  The basic plot beats are in place, characters have motivation, events occur in a mostly logical order (although the actions within those events don’t hold up so well), and then the movie ends.  In 80 minutes.  I don’t think there’s a scene in Jonah Hex that lasts longer than five minutes.  I’m all for brevity of storytelling, but Hex seems to be racing to the end before anyone notices it exists.  That’s a shame because it has some good performances and some creative sparks.  But watching the movie, you know that it’s been edited to hell and stripped of what it was supposed to be—for better or worse.  It’s a bloody, angry revenge flick that doesn’t have any blood and is trying to manage its anger.  The result is an uneven film that never feels true to itself and does the bare minimum in order to get by.

With Jonah Hex getting released tomorrow, I was able to sit down with producer Andrew Lazar (Get Smart, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) for an extended interview last weekend.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about the challenges of getting Jonah Hex made, how they got the great cast together, the mixing of different genres in Hex, what will be on the DVD/Blu-ray (over 10 minutes of deleted scenes), and a lot more.

But after talking about Jonah Hex for awhile, we started talking about his other projects like I Love You Phillip Morris, Akira, Get Smart 2, Untitled Joe Namath Project, Pre-Astronauts (now called One Finger Salute), what are general meetings, and a lot more.  Some of the interesting things I learned were:

As you can see, we covered a lot of ground.  It’s really a fantastic interview and if you’re curious about any of the projects I mentioned or just curious about how films get made, I think you’ll love the interview.  Hit the jump to check it out:

Josh Brolin Exclusive Video Interview JONAH HEX; Also Talks MEN IN BLACK 3, TRUE GRIT, More

Josh Brolin Jonah Hex video interview image slice

With the amount of coverage we’ve given Jonah Hex over the past few months (my set report and on set interviews with Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and Director Jimmy Hayward), I’d like to think you know what the movie is about and who’s in it.  But for the three people that don’t, watch these movie clips and read the synopsis.

Anyway, the other day I got to sit down with Josh Brolin for a new interview and it turned out great as Brolin is super cool and willing to talk about anything. During interview he talked about why he wanted to play Jonah Hex, what the past year has been like for him as he’s been working nonstop on films like Wall Street 2, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, the Coen Brothers True Grit, and he even told me why he wanted to be in Men in Black 3.  It’s really a great interview so check it out after the jump:

JONAH HEX Press Conference: Read or Listen to Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, Director Jimmy Hayward and Producer Andrew Lazar

Usually press conferences suck.  They’re almost always a waste of time.  After all, when you’ve got a group of actors and filmmakers sharing a stage, you can never get a good rhythm going with any one person because as soon as they answer a question, it’s the next persons turn.  This is why I’m happy to report the press conference for Jonah Hex was awesome.  Unlike some that can be boring and filled with safe answers, Josh Brolin and Megan Fox were really open and honest about everything.  Also, I never knew Brolin could be so funny, as he had the room laughing many times.  And on top of that, Megan Fox quoted The Lord of the Rings message boards when answering if she felt the freedom to take liberties with her character as opposed to staying true to the comic books.  My jaw hit the ground as she said:

“I go on to Lord of the Rings forums, because I’m a fan, and they’ll complain that Frodo was eating the Lambis bread outside of Mordor instead of the mines of Moria, and they get really mad. I think you have to take some kind of liberties to make it into a live action film, or it wouldn’t work.”

Um…wow.  So if you’d like to read or listen to an awesome press conference with Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, Director Jimmy Hayward and Producer Andrew Lazar about making Jonah Hex, hit the jump!

With Jonah Hex getting released this weekend, Warner Bros. has finally released a bunch of movie clips from the Jimmy Hayward film that stars Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon.

he clips that WB released focus on the action, which is one of the strong aspects of Jonah Hex.  While I have some issues with the film as I think it could have been longer (the film is very short), there are a lot of cool parts and the supporting cast will surprise you as they got a few big name actors to do very small roles.  Anyway, for a taste of Jonah Hex, hit the jump.  And if you missed my set visit coverage, click these links: my set report and on set interviews with Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and Director Jimmy Hayward.

Opening this Friday is director Jimmy Hayward’s Jonah Hex and it stars Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon.  From the synopsis:

The movie is an action-packed adventure-thriller with supernatural elements about a tough, scarred bounty hunter.  Josh Brolin brings Jonah Hex to life with a bad-ass attitude and wry humor.   Based on the legendary character from the popular DC graphic novels of the same name, the film is an all new adventure in which Jonah Hex is enlisted by the post-Civil War U.S. government to track down an old enemy who is plotting a devastating attack on the United States.

New JONAH HEX Trailer Starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox

With a June 18 release date fast approaching, Warner Bros. has released a second trailer for Jonah Hex.  While the first trailer focused on the story of Jonah Hex, the second trailer is all about selling the action and letting you know the film has a supernatural element.  And you know what…it works.  While I agreed with Matt’s assessment that the first trailer was all over the place, by not trying to do too much in the second trailer, I think more will be interested in the film.

For more on Jonah Hex…here’s my set report and on set interviews with Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Director Jimmy Hayward and a ton of images.  Hit the jump for the new trailer.
