A new trailer for director Akiva Schaffer’s (Hot Rod) sci-fi comedy The Watch (previously titled Neighborhood Watch) has been released.  The film stars Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller and Richard Ayoade as a group of neighbors who form a local neighborhood watch group and end up stumbling onto an alien plot to destroy the world.  This trailer is essentially an all-ages version of the red band trailer that was released a few weeks ago, with a few bits of new footage interspersed throughout; we also get our first look at the aliens.  This trailer has a few laughs, but as we saw with the red band cut the pic is a pretty hard-R so it’s hard to get a gist of the comedy when it’s cleaned up.  That said, I’m really looking forward to seeing this ensemble of great comedic talents play off of each other with the filter taken off.  Moreover, Hot Rod is wonderfully underrated and I’m eager to see Schaffer bring his brand of weird to a big commercial comedy.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Billy Crudup, Will Forte, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Nicholas Braun. The Watch opens July 27th.

Jonah Hill Joins Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Proving that his dramatic turn in last year’s Moneyball (and subsequent Oscar nomination) wasn’t simply a one-off, Jonah Hill is looking to next work with legendary director Martin ScorseseDeadline reports that Hill will star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Scorsese’s adaptation of Jordan Belfort‘s memoir The Wolf of Wall Street.  DiCaprio stars as Belfort, a hard partying, drug addicted stockbroker who was indicted in 1998 for security fraud and money laundering and served a 22-month federal prison stretch.

Hill will play Belfort’s close friend who becomes Belfort’s business partner once he convinces Hill’s character to join him in the world of stocks. Hill is also set to star opposite James Franco in the drama True Story, and his addition to The Wolf of Wall Street only affirms the fact that he plans on continuing with more dramatic roles.  Nevertheless, he’s not leaving comedy completely behind.  He’s set to star in Seth Rogen’s directorial debut The Apocalypse and he’ll next be seen alongside Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in the sci-fi comedy The Watch.  Production on The Wolf of Wall Street begins in August.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.

New Title and Red Band Trailer for THE WATCH Starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill

The comedy previously known as Neighborhood Watch now has a new red band trailer and a new title.  To distance itself from the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, director Akiva Schaffer’s (Hot Rod) sci-fi comedy is now simply titled The Watch.  Nevertheless, this trailer exactly what I was hoping would come out of a Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Ben Stiller team-up.  Thankfully, it appears they’re going full-R on this one based on the a high number of f-bombs and dick jokes thrown into this red band clip.  The film stars Vaughn, Hill, Stiller and Richard Ayoade as a group of neighbors who form a local watch group and end up stumbling onto an alien plot to destroy the world.

I’m a huge fan of Hot Rod, and it looks like Schaffer is bringing some of the same oddball humor to this film. The sci-fi aspect is played way up in this trailer, and I especially love how the characters react after stumbling upon an unknown alien weapon.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Billy Crudup, Will Forte, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Nicholas Braun. The Watch opens July 27th.

Watch a Montage of Famous Actors in Their Feature Film Debuts

It’s always a fun treat when a now-famous actor pops up in a small role in an older movie you haven’t re-watched in a while.  We previously posted a “Before They Were Famous” supercut, but now someone has edited together a montage of actors in their very first feature film roles. While you’re most likely aware of the majority of these appearances, I’m willing to bet you’ll find at least a few surprises in this video.  I had no idea Jon Hamm was in Clint Eastwood’s “old guys can be astronauts too” movie Space Cowboys, but I now feel compelled to move the pic to the top of my Netflix queue.

Watch Jack Nicholson, Woody Allen, Emma Thompson, Zach Braff and many more make their feature debut after the jump.

THE SITTER Blu-ray Review

Ten years ago David Gordon Green was one of the most promising independent filmmakers. Last year he made two studio comedies: Your Highness and The Sitter. Both of which bombed at the box office. It’s likely this isn’t the final chapter of Green’s career, but perhaps he will move on to non-comedies at for a while. The Sitter stars Jonah Hill as a college dropout who takes a babysitting gig, only for everything to go crazy when his girlfriend wants him to stop by a party so they can have sex for the first time. It’s got just enough weirdness and transgression not to be painful, but The Sitter isn’t that funny. Our review of the film follows after the jump.

Weekend Box Office – 21 JUMP STREET Nabs $35 Million Opening

After the high drama of last weekend’s John Carter opening, this morning’s box office is a bit anti-climactic: a comedy that was expected to take first place took first place.  From 3,121 locations 21 Jump Street earned an estimated $35 million.  But, as the only wide release of the frame, Jump Street could not keep 2012 in the black by itself.  For the first time this year the overall box office came in slightly below 2011 levels. But hey, it was nice while it lasted.

Title Weekend Total
1 21 Jump Street $35,000,000 $35
2 The Lorax $22,820,000 $158.4
3 John Carter $13,515,000 $53.1
4 Project X $4,005,000 $48.1
5 A Thousand Words $3,750,000 $12.1
6 Act of Valor $3,678,000 $62.3
7 Safe House $2,755,000 $120.2
8 Journey 2 $2,460,000 $95
9 Casa De Mi Padre $2,200,000 $2.2
10 This Means War $2,125,000 $50.5

From here on out, when I see a movie and can’t quit thinking about it one week after my initial viewing I’m going to refer to it as the Martha Marcy May Marlene effect. I was uncertain how I felt about it while watching. Flash-forward one week later and I’m still uncertain. Combine some great performances from Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes, reserved but effective cinematography, sparse dialogue and even fewer musical cues and what I got was one of the most paranoia-filled movie experiences I’ve ever had. While that may sound like a backhanded compliment, if writer/director Sean Durkin was trying to evoke the type of emotions I think he was with Martha, it may be the highest compliment I can pay him.

In this, the St. Patty’s edition of the “Top 5″, you can find 21 Jump Street interviews with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube and more, The Avengers bits in which Joss Whedon discusses the pic, its current runtime, The Avengers 2, etc., Casa de mi Padre interviews with Will Ferrell, Nick Offerman and more, the first trailer and poster for Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows, and all of our SXSW 2012 coverage. A brief recap and link to each ensue after the jump.

21 Jump Street is going to surprise you.  Not only is it one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, it’s got some great action and awesome performances from all involved.  If you had told me that the pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would be comedy gold, I would have never believed you.  But it is.  Also, another big surprise was Ice Cube.  I’ve seen the film twice and both times he brings the house down with his almost everything he says.  Trust me, you want to see 21 Jump Street and I’d advise seeing it with a crowded theater.  It’s a blast.  For more on the film, here’s Matt’s glowing review, Brendan’s set visit, a five-minute red band clip, and all our coverage on directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s awesome movie.

Last week I got to speak with Hill and Tatum in New York City about their movie.  During the interview we talked about their outfits, when they first knew they’d be so good together, whether or not it was difficult for Tatum to keep up with Hill when he started to improvise, deleted scenes, karaoke, favorite movies, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for more.

21 JUMP STREET Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 9th, 2012 at 1:58 pm

21-jump-street-channing-tatum-jonah-hill

21 Jump Street is cocky as hell.  Usually, when a movie clearly lays out a set-up for an eventual payoff, we groan, lament the story’s predictability, and all the impact is diminished because we saw the hit coming.  21 Jump Street comes up to the line of turning directly to the camera and saying, “This will come back later,” and the joke still manages to hit like a sucker punch.  The set-up-pay-off humor is just one weapon in the film’s arsenal.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller effortlessly move between the cartoonish, the absurd, the darkly comic, the vulgar, and almost every time the jokes absolutely kill.  But the excellent lead performances from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum elevate the film from a raucous comedy, and they make 21 Jump Street not just a film where two bike cops mime having sex with an apprehended perp.  It’s a film with a heart, a soul, and two bike cops miming having sex with an apprehended perp.

Video of SUPERBAD Table-Read Provides Reminder to Re-Watch SUPERBAD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 7th, 2012 at 8:25 am

2007′s Superbad was a huge launching point for everyone involved (except for poor Martha MacIsaac even though she was quite good in the film).  Now, a table-read for the film has landed online.  Looking back at over six-minutes of the actors reading the script, I’m instantly reminded of how sweet, funny, and filthy the film is. Some of the jokes in the table read are different, particularly the stuff between Evan (Michael Cera) and Becca (MacIsaac).  Also, “Becca” was originally called “Helen”, and her Becca’s friend “Gabby” was originally named “Becca.”  Clearly, these minor changes will make you rethink the entire film (it will also make you want to watch Superbad immediately).

5-Minute Red-Band Trailer for 21 JUMP STREET

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 6th, 2012 at 11:36 am

Sony has released a five-minute red-band trailer for 21 Jump Street.  I’m not going to watch it.  I’m already sold on the movie since I’ve only heard raves about it.  I’ve been told directly “I know your sense of humor and you are going to love this movie.”  I was pretty much sold back when the first red-band trailer hit.  Watching five minutes of the movie would just spoil more jokes for me, so I’m going to pass.

However, if you need more convincing, you can check out the trailer after the jump.  The film stars  Jonah Hill (who also co-wrote the script), Channing Tatum, Nick Offerman, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle.  21 Jump Street opens March 16th.  I’ll be seeing the film at SXSW, so look for my review later this week.
