Seeing as it’s already February and that little furry rodent has predicted six more weeks of winter, we thought we’d take a look ahead to some March movie releases. Coincidentally, three big March movies have recently released new posters. First up is Disney’s March 9th release, John Carter, starring Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War vet transplanted onto Mars, in an Andrew Stanton-directed picture. Next is the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed 21 Jump Street, a March 16th release starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as two screw-up cops who infiltrate a local high school drug ring. Finally, we have a new poster from the Tarsem Singh project, Mirror Mirror, a Snow White adaptation featuring Lily Collins and Julia Roberts which opens March 30th. Jonah Hill and Justin Bieber to Host SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE; Paul Brittain Leaving Cast Immediately

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: January 31st, 2012 at 11:54 am

This season of Saturday Night Live has delivered some solid episodes with hosts like Daniel Radcliffe and hopefully a solid debut from Channing Tatum this coming weekend. Now a couple upcoming hosts have also been revealed with TV Line reporting that Jonah Hill will return for a second hosting stint on March 10th, just in time to promote 21 Jump Street. In addition, according to the Here’s the Thing podcast, Alec Baldwin, while speaking with SNL boss Lorne Michaels mentioned that Justin Bieber would make his debut as host at some point.

However, the real surprising news comes from EW as featured player Paul Brittain, best known for playing Ron Paul and the flamboyant and old time gay Lord Cecil Wyndemere, will be leaving the cast immediately. In fact, his departure will be so abrupt that he won’t even appear on this coming weekend’s episode. While no specific details are mentioned, a source said Brittain “had the opportunity to pursue other projects, and he and the show parted ways amicably.” He wasn’t the strongest presence in the line-up, but I wonder what this fantastic opportunity was that would have him leaving so abruptly.

2012 Oscar Nominations Announced; HUGO and THE ARTIST Lead the Pack

2012-oscar-academy-awards-poster-slice1

The nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards have finally been unveiled. Many of the categories have fallen in line just as most have predicted (I fared alright with my predictions, but not great), with Hugo scoring 11 nods, followed closely by The Artist with 10. The biggest surprises are War Horse and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close getting in for Best Picture, the exclusion of The Adventures of Tintin from Best Animated Feature, and The Tree of Life nabbing Best Picture and Best Director nods (hooray!). On the snub side of things, despite landing the most precursor critics awards of any other actor in the race thus far, Albert Brooks was denied a Best Supporting Actor nod for his stellar work in Drive (boo). Additionally, Tilda Swinton was overlooked for giving the best performance of the year in We Need to Talk About Kevin, and AMPAS has no love for Michael Fassbender‘s haunting work in Shame.

There’s still plenty to be happy about, as Gary Oldman has his first ever Oscar Nomination (yes, that’s right) and Melissa McCarthy is a Best Supporting Actress nominee. Hit the jump to check out the full list of nominees. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented by Billy Crystal on February 26th.

Oscars 2012: Adam Predicts the Nominees

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 21st, 2012 at 2:38 pm

2012-oscar-academy-awards-poster-slice1

As I’ve been covering awards season pretty extensively here on the site over the past few months, I figured it would be appropriate to (foolishly) try to predict the upcoming Oscar nominations. It’s been a fairly tame year, as a few frontrunners were singled out early in the race and have held their ground throughout the grueling awards season. We haven’t been without a few surprises, as Steven Spielberg’s War Horse took a massive tumble following snubs from most of the major guilds, and David Fincher has surged back into the race bringing his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with him.

Though there are plenty of safe bets when it comes to the 2012 Oscar nominations, there are still a few wildcards and tricky categories. I’ve put on my prognosticating cap (those interested can purchase one of these nifty hats at your local Target) and compiled a list of who and what I think will make the cut. Hit the jump to see how I think the nods will stack up when they’re announced on January 24th.

MONEYBALL Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: January 16th, 2012 at 5:30 am

What if you made a scrappy underdog sports film that wasn’t funny? In some ways that’s what Moneyball is, it’s the story of Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and how he works with Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) to build a team to win using statistics over star players. Bennett Miller’s film is engaging enough even for those who don’t follow the game (and those that do may dismiss what they accomplished – as many have) but as a narrative it’s the rare serious attempt to tell an underdog sports story without focusing on jokes or the players. Our review of Moneyball on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Seth Rogen’s Directorial Debut THE APOCALYPSE in Negotiations with Sony

Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.

New Trailer and Poster for 21 JUMP STREET

A new trailer and poster have debuted for 21 Jump Street. The trailer only has a small amount of new footage from the last trailer we saw, but the movie still looks great. I was a huge fan of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and they seem to have brought their oddball sense of humor to Jump Street. Stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum look to be genuinely funny, and the film continues to be high on my most anticipated list for 2012.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The film also stars Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Nick Offerman, and Rob Riggle. 21 Jump Street opens March 16th, 2012.

First Look at Sam Worthington in WRATH OF THE TITANS and Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 2nd, 2011 at 12:08 pm

Today we’ve been granted a first look at Wrath of the Titans and the comedy Neighborhood Watch courtesy of some scans from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. The Clash of the Titans sequel once again stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, who is tasked with rescuing a kidnapped Zeus (Liam Neeson) from Hades (Ralph Fiennes). The image shows Worthingon running and yelling (something he’s gotten very, very good at), and he seems to be carrying a trident. Director Jonathan Liebesman reveals that the trident is but one of several celestial weapons Perseus has to bring together “in order to create an uber-weapon.” Hit the jump for info on Neighborhood Watch and to check out the images.

20th Century Fox has sent over 5 clips from The Sitter, the new R-rated comedy led by Jonah Hill.  Here’s the logline:

“When the world’s most irresponsible babysitter takes three of the world’s worst kids on an unforgettable overnight adventure through the streets of New York City, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to make it home in one piece.”

Sam Rockwell, Ari Graynor, and J.B. Smoove also star in the comedy directed by David Gordon Green (Your Highness).  The Sitter opens on December 9.  Watch the clips after the jump.

New Red Band Trailer for THE SITTER Starring Jonah Hill

A new red band trailer for the comedy The Sitter has been released. Directed by Pineapple ExpressDavid Gordon Green, the film stars Jonah Hill in what’s essentially an R-rated version of Adventures in Babysitting. This new red band trailer is pretty funny, and elaborates on some of the quick scenes we saw in the first trailer. We also get more of Sam Rockwell which is definitely a good thing. While I’m still not feeling like it’ll be up to the same standard as Pineapple Express, it should be good for a few laughs.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Ari Graynor and J.B. Smoove. The Sitter opens November 9th.

Green-Band Trailer for 21 JUMP STREET

The red-band trailer for the R-rated comedic adaptation of 21 Jump Street hit last week and instantly made the movie one of my most-anticipated for 2012.  All of the jokes were funny, and you’ll see all of them again in the green-band trailer.  It’s almost exactly the same as the red-band, but the swearing has been cut out.  However, the jokes are still great, which means the movie doesn’t coast solely on foul-mouthed humor.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Jonah Hill (who also co-wrote the script), Channing Tatum, Nick Offerman, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, and Rob Riggle21 Jump Street opens March 16, 2012.

Red Band Trailer for 21 JUMP STREET Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum

A red band trailer for 21 Jump Street has been released. A remake of the 1980s television series of the same name, the film stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as young cops who go undercover at a high school. The trailer is actually hilariously fantastic. The high school flashbacks of Hill and Tatum’s characters are perfect, and there’s a much-welcomed appearance in the trailer by Parks and Recreation‘s Nick Offerman. Hill and Tatum look to have some great chemistry, and in some ways the film actually feels like a spiritual sequel to Superbad.  I’m definitely excited to see more. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs), the film also stars Ice Cube, Dave Franco, Brie Larsen, and Rob Riggle.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. And if you missed it, be sure to check out Brendan’s set visit preview for the film. 21 Jump Street opens March 16th, 2012.

Jonah Hill ALLEN GREGORY Interview

by Christina Radish    Posted: October 29th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Jonah Hill ALLEN GREGORY interview slice

The new Fox animated series Allen Gregory tells the story of a pretentious 7-year-old who seems himself as an intelligent, sophisticated, worldly, artistic and romantic young man. Although Allen Gregory has allegedly composed operas, written novels and dated Chloë Sevigny, his journey now sees him having to leave the safety of his father’s home-schooling to attend elementary school with children his own age.

Created by actor Jonah Hill (who voices Allen Gregory De Longpre), along with Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, who also all serve as executive producers, the series illustrates how every outsider is just looking to fit in. During a recent interview to promote the October 30th premiere of the show, Hill talked about how they developed the idea for a delusional and pretentious character in the body of an adorable 7-year-old kid, determining the look of the animation, the ambiguity of all of Allen Gregory’s worldly experiences, how the show is for viewers of all ages, and how airing after The Simpsons is a childhood dream-come-true for him. He also talked about his development deal at Fox, returning to voice a role for How to Train Your Dragon 2, and the experience of making 21 Jump Street, which he says will be an amazing movie. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Showtime Developing LGBT Drama Series with TEMPLE GRANDIN Writer and Lee Daniels; Fox Buys Comedy Pilot from Jonah Hill and Comedian Hannibal Buress

The filmmaker is already involved with a TV adaptation of The Valley of the Dolls at NBC, but director Lee Daniels is playing around with the small screen even more. Deadline has word that Daniels is working with Temple Grandin writer W. Merritt Johnson for a new drama at Showtime that will focus on the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transsexual) subculture. Daniels is attached to direct the pilot for the potential series which is set in New York City and centers on the disenfranchised multicultural transgender youth of the Ball subculture. The culture has changed over the decades, but the underground society is said to consist of New York City’s disadvantaged black, Latino, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual communities who come together to compete for trophies and prizes, almost like a set of fraternities. Showtime’s no stranger to the lives of some of these communities with shows like The L Word and Queer as Folk in their past, so this definitely seems right up their alley. And with an Academy Award nominated director and Emmy nominated writer on board, it should be an interesting series.

Details on a new comedy pilot from Jonah Hill and comedian Hannibal Buress after the jump.
