Is there anything Joseph Gordon-Levitt can’t do? He’s starred a variety of films tackling multiple genres—from the noir drama Brick, to the big-budget Inception, to the indie dramedy (500) Days of Summer—started his own open-collaborative production company hitRECord, and now he’s set to make his feature directorial debut with a comedy co-starring Scarlett Johansson. Gordon-Levitt wrote, will direct and star in the untitled film, which is set to begin production in mid April. How do you deal cinematically with cancer? That’s the question of Jonathan Levine’s 50/50, which was based on the experiences of its writer Will Reiser. It’s a tough subject matter because cancer touches so many lives and rarely offers happy endings. But 50/50 manages to be charming, and more about friendship and family in crisis than just pain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars with Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anna Kendrick in this warm dramedy. Our review of 50/50 on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s LOOPER Make-Up Designed to Resemble Bruce Willis

In Rian Johnson‘s upcoming sci-fi action film Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a looper (a hitman who kills people sent back in time by mobs in the future) who eventually has to face-off against his future self (played by Bruce Willis).  When casting was announced, we didn’t really think twice about the two actors not resembling each other.  It was simple suspension of disbelief.  But Johnson is having none of that.  The Brick director tells the LA Times that Gordon-Levitt will be spending three hours a day in a make-up chair and wear practical prosthetics to resemble the older actor.

Hit the jump for Johnson’s explanation on how Gordon-Levitt will be playing Willis.  Johnson also talks about how time travel will be used in the movie. Looper opens September 28th.

The first images from the production of Lincoln caused a stir because Daniel Day-Lewis looks amazing in character as Abraham Lincoln.  Among a new round of set photos, we have our first look at a mustachioed Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of our 16th president.  Not quite the same impact, but Gordon-Levitt looks sharp in period costue.

The shoot is on location in Old Towne Petersburg in Virginia to take advantage of the period architecture.  Along with the Gordon-Levitt photo, there are a couple of pictures that pull back for a broader view of the set that give you a sense of the scope and detail of Steven Spielberg‘s production. Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes, and Jared Harris also star.  Lincoln is expected to hit theaters in late 2012.  Hit the jump for the photos.

New Trailer for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

The trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises has gone online.  The trailer is full of ominous warning.  Both Batman and Gordon brought peace to Gotham, but it looks like that has only served to massive destruction and Catwoman warnings.  There’s plenty to like in the trailer: the set design, the tone, the chanting, and how the frame is packed with action.  But there’s one shot that had me cracking up and it’s the destruction of the football field.  I watch that and all I can think is, “Bane just seriously fucked over my fantasy football team.”

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael CaineThe Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Set Photos Feature Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in New York [UPDATED]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 28th, 2011 at 10:25 am

Production on The Dark Knight Rises has now moved onto New York City for two weeks of location filming, which means you can expect quite a few set photos to surface. Such is the case today, as we’ve got some images featuring Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt on set, as well as Bale hanging out in Trump Tower pretending it’s Wayne Enterprises (silly Bale, always getting his buildings mixed up), and a host of Wayne’s flashy car. The images don’t spoil anything from the film, so feel free to peruse if you’re so inclined.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos. The film also stars Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th, 2012. [Update: More set photos have surfaced giving us a look at both Gordon-Levitt and Bale in full costume. They're included after the jump.]

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

How does Joseph Gordon-Levitt spouting Quentin Tarantino dialogue in an 1800s-set western sound to you? Well, if all goes according to plan, we’ll be able to see just that. Variety reports that Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The pic stars Jamie Foxx as the titular character, a freed slave who sets out with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) on a quest to rescue his wife from an evil plantation owner. Gordon-Levitt’s Inception co-star Leonardo DiCaprio is set as the plantation-owning villain. The actor is keen on taking the role, but he’ll apparently have to sort out several scheduling issues to fit the pic in. He’s currently filming roles in both The Dark Knight Rises and Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited biopic Lincoln.

Production on Tarantino’s pic is set to get underway in New Orleans in January. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tom Savini and Don Johnson. Django Unchained opens December 25th, 2012.

PREMIUM RUSH, Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Moves to August 24, 2012

Sony Pictures has moved David Koepp’s small-scale action-thriller Premium Rush from January 13, 2012 to August 24th.  The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger who has a routine delivery turn in to a life-and-death situation when he picks up a package wanted by a corrupt cop (Michael Shannon).  Sony must think they have something if they’re moving the film out of the January wasteland to the summer movie season.  The movie joins Men in Black 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Total Recall as Sony’s summer 2012 fare.  The Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom was previously slated to be in that group but was recently moved to October 12, 2012.

Box Office Mojo reports that Premium Rush currently has no competition on the August 24th date.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

With the fall film season now in full swing, I’m 100% ashamed to admit that I’ve yet to see two of my most anticipated fall films: Moneyball and 50/50. Now, I have every intention of ending this charade at some point this weekend but, for now, I hope you’ll give me a pass. If I’ve still yet to check them out when we meet here next week, I’ll understand if you choose to revoke my “mildly credible film blogger” credentials. In the meantime…

…In this week’s “Top 5″ installment, you can find all of our Fantastic Fest 2011 coverage. After that, interviews abound with the cast of Jonathan Levine’s dramedy 50/50, the cast, creators, and real-life inspiration for Machine Gun Preacher, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance director Brian Taylor, and Thor/The Avengers‘ Tom Hiddleston. Check out a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

50/50 Review

It’s important to have a sense of humor in all things.  Being able to laugh at misfortune doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re diminishing a tragedy’s importance or ignoring the feelings created by hardship.  Laughter isn’t the best medicine (that would be the polio vaccine) but it’s damn useful and Jonathan Levine’s 50/50 manages to find humor in cancer by bringing together great performances and a gentle approach that manages to skillfully balance foul-mouthed dialogue alongside honest drama.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks 50/50, SNL, LOOPER, Steven Spielberg, and IMAX on THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Joseph Gordon-Levitt 5050 interview slice

The dramedy 50/50, directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness), is one of my favorite films of 2011.  Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anjelica Huston, the film is based on screenwriter Will Reiser’s real-life battle with cancer and focuses on the twists, turns, shock, sadness, and comedic relief that he experienced along the way.  While all the performances are fantastic, Gordon-Levitt is operating on another level.  I really believe he’s one of the best actors working in Hollywood.

While at the Toronto Film Festival, I was able to speak with Gordon-Levitt about how he got involved in 50/50, if he’ll ever host Saturday Night Live again and how he’ll top his amazing opening number, if he prefers doing a few takes like Clint Eastwood or tons like David Fincher, what it means to be working with Steven Spielberg on Lincoln, and if he’s seen a rough cut of Rian Johnson’s Looper.  In addition, while I knew he’d be guarded about The Dark Knight Rises, I was able to get a good answer on what it’s like work with the IMAX cameras.  Hit the jump to watch.

Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling or Alexander Skarsgård Land in Steven Soderbergh’s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.?

by Jason Barr    Posted: September 15th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Last month, we reported that George Clooney had dropped out of director Steven Soderbergh’s adaptation of the 1960s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. Prior to that, it was believed that Clooney would fill Robert Vaughn’s shoes as the character Napoleon Solo. Although we’re still unsure who Warner Bros. would like to take on that part, it does seem as if we have a better idea of who the studio would like to see fill another primary Man from U.N.C.L.E. role, that of Illya Kuryakin (played in the original by David McCallum). Apparently, Warner Bros. is looking for an actor in his 20s to play Illya, and at the top of their wish list? Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgård. More after the jump.

First Trailer for PREMIUM RUSH Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon

The first trailer for co-writer/director David Koepp’s (Ghost Town) action/thriller Premium Rush is now available online. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Jamie Chung, Dania Ramirez and The Daily Show‘s Aasif Mandvi, the film centers on Wilee (Gordon-Levitt), a New York bicycle messenger who has a routine delivery turn into a life or death situation. Based on the trailer, Premium Rush looks to be a stylish thriller and while some of the dialogue may seem a little heavy-handed, I’m willing to take a chance on anything that features both Gordon-Levitt and Shannon.

Check out the trailer for yourself after the jump. Premium Rush hits theaters on January 13, 2012.
