We’ve got some exclusive images from the upcoming film Bunraku for you. In the vein of Sin City and 300, the story centers on a mysterious drifter and a young Japansese warrior who wander into a town that has been terrorized by criminals. The two set out on their separate quests, encountering a number of strange and fantastical characters and situations along the way. Directed by Guy Moshe, the film stars Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Ron Perlman, and Gackt. Hit the jump to check out the images. Bunraku is currently available VOD and hits theaters September 30.

Here's the trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis:

A mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett) and an ardent young Japanese warrior Yoshi (Gackt) both arrive in a town that has been terrorized by outrageous and virulent criminals. Each is obsessed with his separate mission, and guided by the wisdom of The Bartender (Woody Harrelson) at the Horseless Horseman Saloon, the two eventually join forces to bring down the corrupt and contemptuous reign of Nicola (Ron Perlman), the awesomely evil "woodcutter" and his lady Alexandra (Demi Moore), a femme fatale with a secret past. This classic tale is re-vitalized and re-imagined in an entirely fresh visual context, set in a unique world that mixes skewed reality with shadow-play fantasy, a place where even the landscape can betray you. Heroes triumph here only because the force of their will transforms and transcends both space and time. The world of BUNRAKU is past and present, fantasy and reality, Samurai and ...

Borrowing its name from a 400-year-old art of Japanese puppetry, the fantasy drama Bunraku (available on VOD on September 1st and in theaters on September 30th) is about a mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett) and a passionate young Japanese warrior named Yoshi (Gackt), that both arrive in a town that has been terrorized by extreme criminals. Each man is obsessed with his own separate mission, and are guided by the wisdom of The Bartender (Woody Harrelson), but they eventually join forces to bring down the corrupt Nicola (Ron Perlman), who is at the root of each of their problems. Set in a unique world of hyper-real colors and locations, and combining the themes of Samurai and Western films, it gives the story’s classic conflict a vitality and imagination that makes the dynamic fresh.

To promote the film’s release, Josh Hartnett did this exclusive phone interview with Collider, in which he talked about the visual presentation that the film’s director showed him before he agreed to take the role, how much fun he had developing the backstory for a character known only as The Drifter, how this is such a universal story because everybody wants someone to come in and save the day and change our lives for the better, and the importance of keeping his character’s emotions as real as possible in such a surreal setting. He also talked about how he quit the business for awhile so that he could decide the direction he wanted to take his career, choosing things ...

After watching the trailer for The Bunraku, I’m more than a little confused. Its visual style conjures imagery of Dick Tracy and Kung Fu Hustle, but it’s as if these films took place in the world of Beetle Juice. Not to mention there’s some guy unloading serious kick-assery while wearing what seems to be the sorting hat from Harry Potter. The story is as follows: a drifter (Josh Hartnett) teams up with a young samurai (Gackt) and a bartender (Woody Harrelson) who plot revenge against a ruthless leader (Ron Perlman), a dangerous man leading an army of criminals headed by nine diverse and deadly assassins. The film also stars Demi Moore and Kevin McKidd.

All in all, the trailer makes the movie look a bit ridiculous but unique enough to leave an impression. Hit the jump to check it out along with an extended synopsis of the film.

Trailer via AICN:

Steve got the opportunity to watch a screening of The Bunraku at the Toronto Internationl Film Festival last year. You can watch his video reaction here.

Full Synopsis:
In a hyperreal, hyper-saturated, hyper-driven dystopia, guns are banned upon pain of death and the sword is now king.

Nicola the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman) is the most powerful man east of the Atlantic, a shadowy crime boss who rules with an iron fist with the help of nine diverse assassins and the Red Gang, a force not to be trifled with. His right-hand man is Killer #2 (Kevin McKidd), a cold-hearted, smooth-talking, toe-tapping murderer dressed in red ...

The trailer for Girl Walks into a Bar has gone online. The film has an impressive cast that includes Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Alexis Bledel, and Robert Forster. Based solely on the trailer, I have no idea was to what the movie's about. But Girl's hook doesn't seem to be it's cast or its story, but rather its distribution method. Girl Walks into a Bar will be presented by Lexus and YouTube for free, exclusively on YouTube. The money quote in the press release comes from Lexus VP of Marketing Dave Nordstrom:
"It seems fitting to support this initiative as we launch our most unconfined vehicle yet—the CT 200h hybrid —in a space that we know will reach an unconventional, sophisticated audience." (emphasis mine)
Clearly, Mr. Nordstrom has never been on YouTube. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, four images from the film, and the full press release. Girl Walks into a Bar goes online March 11th.

We have a couple of casting tidbits to send your way this afternoon. First up, Neve Campbell is currently in negotiations to join Singularity alongside confirmed star Josh Hartnett. Singularity will be directed by two-time Oscar nominee Roland Joffe (The Mission) and will take place in 1778 and 2015 concurrently. According to THR, Campbell would play Hartnett's wife in 2015 and would manage to "get stuck in a sunken ship while trying to retrieve a ring." The film is set to begin shooting in Australia and India in January.
Next, Jessica Chastain (upcoming The Tree of Life) has agreed to star in the Prohibition-Era-drama The Wettest County. Chastain joins Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy as confirmed cast members in what will be John Hillcoat's feature directorial follow-up to 2009's The Road. Per THR, Chastain will play Hardy's love interest, a "a big city woman now living in a small town who at one time was mixed up with gangsters." The Wettest County is based on Matt Bondurant's 2008 novel The Wettest County in the World: A Novel Based on a True Story in which Bondurant tells the story of his siblings and their bootlegging trials/tribulations in a purportedly dry Virginia. Production on the film is currently aiming for a February 2011 start.

In the last 24 hours, many people here at the Toronto International Film Festival got to check out writer/director Guy Moshe’s Bunraku. Starring Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Kevin McKidd and Ron Perlman, this was one of those films on my radar since we ran the images that showcased the hyper stylized sets and costumes.

Going in, I figured the film was either going to be incredibly cool, or a train wreck of epic proportions. It was neither. Instead, I walked out thinking Moshe aimed really high with Bunraku and while some of it was pretty cool, a lot of it had some problems - the biggest of which was the two hour running time. I think if he had cut it down to 90 minutes, the film would be a lot stronger. Saying all this, I respect that he made something unique and different and think everyone (included all the actors) gave it their all. For a lot more, hit the jump:

For more on what I thought…here's a video reaction/blog that I did with Peter from Slashfilm just a few minutes ago.

What I love about this time of year are all the movies getting ready to unspool for the first time. Over the next few weeks, the Toronto Film Festival, Telluride, the Venice Film Festival, and even Fantastic Fest will premiere tons of movies - with many of them under the radar (for now). That's because every year plays out the same way…as a few movies will come out of nowhere to win some of the biggest Awards at each of the Festivals and then they'll get released around the world. That's why everyone gets so excited for this time of year, because over the next few weeks, the world's leading film critics will get to see almost all the big releases for the rest of the year and everyone wants to be the first one predicting what will win an Oscar and what film was a huge disappointment.

So why this long winded intro? Because one of the many films off my radar was writer/director Guy Moshe's Bunraku. While I knew the film from the times I'd seen the title listed on Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Josh Hartnett, Kevin McKidd and Ron Perlman's IMDb profiles, I didn't know anything about it. However, we just got the first images from the film and the synopsis and now I'm very curious. Hit the jump for more:

The upcoming dramedy Everything Must Go is headed to this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Based on the Raymond Carver short story, Dan Rush's low-budget dramedy centers on a recovering alcoholic (played by Will Ferrell) "who falls off the wagon, is tossed from both his job and home, and must survive on his front lawn by selling his belongings in a yard sale." Ferrell scored another hit this weekend when The Other Guys scored $35.6 million at the box office this weekend. While I enjoyed the film, I always want to see Ferrell in roles outside his comfort zone and his part in Everything Must Go sounds like one of them.

THR also reports that Brad Anderson's thriller The Vanishing on 7th Street, starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo, and Guy Moshe's action noir movie Bunraku, starring Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, will play at the festival. The 2010 Toronto International Film Festival will run from September 9 – 19th.

Here's some inside baseball about Hollywood that your average moviegoer may not know: movies do not get made solely from investors or studios nor do they make money solely from domestic box office. A large majority of films, especially true indie films (i.e. no name stars), require the sale of their foreign distribution rights to finish the film they're selling or to secure a profit that will provide investors with a good return on their investment. However, films with name actors like Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken also have to play this game. Some movies do it by creating unofficial posters and after the jump, we've featured six of these posters plus synopses for films with name actors but are still trying to secure funding. However, this is no guarantee that these films will ever get made and just because someone made up a poster, doesn't mean some kindly, foreign investor is going to put in his euros or yen so hit the jump and see if you would bet on these movies.

These posters are for an upcoming event known as the American Film Market where hundreds of distributors and production companies will attempt to sell thousands of films to potential new investors. The event takes place from November 4th - 11th and looking at their site I see that this event is beyond my comprehension just in terms of sheer logistics. I'm just going to go back to the pretty posters and the nice, simple ...

I hope Josh Hartnett graduates from high school soon. I wonder what college he'll go to and how his career will progress as he matures and...what? He's 31? Like in dog years? He's 31. Does he have a portrait of himself in his attic that just gets older for him? Well, it looks like he'll be playing the lead in the upcoming film "Gunslinger" which I guess they'll have set in an alternate world where a 14-year-old can buy firearms along with some Axe Body Spray. Hit the jump to tell Hartnett that "Halo" skills don't translate to real weapons.
