In a somewhat unsurprising move, Summit Entertainment announced today that the Hunger Games follow-up has now officially been titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The pic is based on author Suzanne Collins’ second book in the Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire. Brand recognition is everything when it comes to tentpoles, and audiences are consistently treated as though they’re unable to put two-and-two together when the exact same cast returns in a new movie with a different title. Nevertheless, Summit added The Twilight Saga moniker to all the Twilight films, so the move was almost inevitable. Hit the jump for more.

Lionsgate may have finally settled on a director for the sequel Catching Fire, but The Hunger Games is still busy doing gangbusters at the box office. It was the number one film for the fourth weekend in a row (the first movie to do that since Avatar and The Dark Knight), and now fans will get another opportunity to see Gary Ross’ adaptation on the big, big screen. Starting April 27th, the film will open again for a one-week limited run in select IMAX theaters. Only about 100 IMAX theaters are participating in the engagement, but if your town is one of the lucky ones and you missed the film in the large-screen format the first time around, now’s your chance to catch it before the pic out of theaters. Moreover, Lionsgate has released a new poster specifically designed to mark the occasion. Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group Co-Chair Rob Friedman had this to say about the re-release:
“It’s wonderful that so many fans have expressed interest in seeing The Hunger Games in the immersive IMAX format, and many of these are repeat viewers. We’re delighted that IMAX has been able to accommodate them through this special one week re-engagement.”
Hopefully those checking out the IMAX version of The Hunger Games are going to actual IMAX theaters instead of reformatted regular theaters (it really does make a difference). Hit the jump to check out the poster.

Films with time-traveling bears tend to defy easy description. So do movies where a teenager has alien fly mutant blood and was forced to wear a TV set on his hand as a child. It’s also tough to describe a flick where a Ghostface-like slash wanders into the picture and isn’t the focal point. Director Joseph Kahn has swirled all these elements and more into the delightful, abrasive lunacy of his new film, Detention. The movie is a rapid-fire assault on the senses, and while it plucks at your neural pathways like an inbred hillbilly armed with a banjo and amphetamines, Kahn’s picture has sharp mind, a charming wit, and a scathing critique on nostalgia and the narcissism of teenagers both past and present.

Detention is a wild and crazy hipster, teen horror-comedy that mixes in science fiction, body-swapping, time-travelling, 1990′s throwback, date flick and a murdering psycho, in only the way that director/co-writer Joseph Kahn (Torque) can. Cinderhella is a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the local students of Grizzly Lake, who are just trying to survive their final year of high school. As the bodies pile up, Riley Jones (Shanley Caswell) and Clapton Davis (The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson) are in a deadly and outrageous race against time to save the world.
At the film’s press day, actor/executive producer Josh Hutcherson talked about his first experience behind the scenes on a film, what he thought of the script when he first read it, how grueling the shoot was, getting to learn how to ride on a unicycle, and what it was like to do his own stunts. He also talked about how happy and excited he is over the box office success of The Hunger Games, and how he doesn’t think there’s a chance that director Gary Ross won’t return to helm the sequel, Catching Fire. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

A little movie called The Hunger Games opened this weekend; perhaps you’ve heard of it? The plot of The Hunger Games focuses on two youthful tributes from each of future America’s 12 districts battling it out to the death so that the people of their home district can reap the rewards. Meanwhile, in reality, people struggle with the very real issue of hunger on a daily basis. While the movie is all in good fun, the cast has teamed up with World Food Programme and Feeding America to bring awareness and relief to this global crisis. If you can drop $10 to see The Hunger Games, you can afford to pitch in a little something to help the hungry, in your own neighborhood or anywhere in the world. The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, is in theaters now. Hit the jump to see how you can help end world hunger.

It’s obvious that Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was the right man for the director’s chair as The Hunger Games is off to a roaring start at the box office. But what would the film have looked like if it were helmed by a different director? Michael Bay, Brett Ratner and Roger Corman would certainly have emphasized the sex appeal and violence. Garry Marshall and Nancy Meyers would probably focus on the romantic side. How would Terrence Malick, Federico Fellini and Werner Herzog have approached the source material? What about Christopher Nolan or Woody Allen? Thanks to these alternate reality movie posters for The Hunger Games, we can get a glimpse of what might have been. Hit the jump to check them out.

Suzanne Collins‘ young adult novel The Hunger Games isn’t particularly well-written, but it’s undeniably cinematic. Collins’ paints a strange, brutal world with a hint of social commentary wrapped in a melodramatic love story and intense action. For the film adaptation, director Gary Ross has created an effective and memorable experience that’s deadly serious and seriously entertaining. Rather than playing into the blockbuster elements of the novel, he takes a subdued approach where less is more and “more” is darkly and comically grotesque. The movie remains tied to the weaker aspects of the book, especially the anti-climactic finish and lightweight social commentary, but terrific performances from the cast and Ross’ superb direction paint a potent and compelling picture.

With over 26 million copies of the Suzanne Collins novel in print in the U.S. alone, The Hunger Games has undeniably become a global phenomenon. And when the big screen adaptation hits theaters on March 23rd, everyone will become familiar with the nation of Panem and its heroes and villains, and it will send the film’s cast into a whole other level of stardom.
At the film’s press day, co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth – who play Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) co-Tribute Peeta Mellark and Gale, her longtime friend in District 12, respectively – talked about their training for the film, the appeal of playing a romantic leading man in a film that also has a lot of action, what it was like to work with director Gary Ross, what they each took away from the experience of making the movie, and how they’re both looking forward to the possible (and quite likely) sequel, Catching Fire. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

With director Gary Ross‘ The Hunger Games opening March 23, Lionsgate has just released the EPK (electronic press kit) and it includes two clips and over six minutes of behind-the-scenes footage. While you’ve probably already seen the clips, the on set footage is definitely new and it includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and a lot more of the cast either rehearsing or filming their scenes. If you wish you could have been on set watching Suzanne Collins’ characters come to life, this is the next best thing. Hit the jump to watch. You can also click here for over thirty images from the film. [Update: We've added an excellent, just-released clip featuring Peeta's (Josh Hutcherson) crucial interview with Caesar Flickman (Stanley Tucci)].

A new TV spot for The Hunger Games has landed online. Though we’ve already seen quite a bit of footage from the film so far, we still haven’t seen anything from the second half of the movie and for that I’m very grateful. I already feel like I’ve seen all of John Carter from the bevy of trailers and TV spots, but Lionsgate is wisely keeping the action-packed second half of the film a surprise. This TV spot has a few bits of new footage here and there, mostly from the Capitol, but it’s nothing super revealing. That said, fans of the book that are counting down the days until March 23rd will surely be happy to get new taste (however minor) of Gary Ross’ adaptation.
Hit the jump to check out the TV spot. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth and Donald Sutherland. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd.

Jennifer Lawrence is the highlight of the first clip released for The Hunger Games. Rightfully so, as her character Katniss is the focal point of the film and, eventually, the entire series. Fans of the first book in Suzanne Collins’ bestselling trilogy should be pleased as this scene is plucked right from the text. Personally, I found it to be one of the more memorable scenes and Lawrence nails it. While auditioning for the Gamemakers, Katniss is attempting to show off her strengths, but the frivolous judges are not amused. Hit the jump to see how Katniss gets their attention.
If you haven’t already, take a look at a bunch of images, TV spots and even soundtrack information, featuring names like Taylor Swift and The Decemberists. The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. The film opens on March 23rd.

A slew of new images from the highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games have gone online. I’ve been extremely pleased with all the trailers thus far, and I can’t wait to see how director Gary Ross takes on the material. I think he’s assembled a terrific cast and the book should make for quite an entertaining moviegoing experience. For the uninitiated, The Hunger Games takes place in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem. As a means of reminding Panem’s 12 districts that the country’s government holds all the power, one teenage boy and one teenage girl are randomly selected from each district to participate in a televised fight to the death called “The Hunger Games.” If you’re wary of spoilers, these new images only seem to be from the first half of the movie. Most of them are from the scenes that take place in the Capitol (complete with the kooky-lookin’ futuristic costumes and Josh Hutcherson‘s Peeta practicing his camouflage), with a few looks at Katniss’s life in District 12.
Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland. The Hunger Games opens on March 23rd. [Update: We've added three more images after the jump.]

I hope you’ve got your tickets for The Hunger Games because they’re disappearing quickly. Making the tickets available a month in advance seems like a great move on the part of Lionsgate, considering The Hunger Games pre-sale just beat the previous Fandango record holder for the first day of sales, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The buzz around the project is really starting to rev up and we’ve got some new TV spots and images to show you after the jump.
The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth and directed by Gary Ross opens March 23rd. Hit the jump to check out the new looks.

Calling all Hunger Games fans: we’ve got a good deal of Panem-related material to wade through today. A batch of new images and an IMAX banner from the film have been released, and Lionsgate announced that advanced tickets for the film go on sale tomorrow. Additionally, the studio is planning a national mall tour to give fans a chance to meet the actors from the film at their local shopping mecca. Director Gary Ross, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and more will be popping up at malls across the country to participate in fan Q&A’s. I’m not exactly sure The Hunger Games needs a mall tour in order to drum up awareness (it feels very 80s pop star), but I guess it gives superfans a chance to interact with the cast.
Hit the jump to check out the images and banner, as well as the full list of participating mall tour cities which includes information on which actors will be at which events. The Hunger Games opens March 23rd.

A new trailer has gone online for The Hunger Games and it’s my favorite one yet. It’s short, sweet, hits the emotional beats, has a little action, and gives us a good look at Stanley Tucci’s wacky hairdo. The trailer also features the Mockingjay pin, which is the big icon of the series.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer, and click here to find out how you can win tickets from us to go the film’s premiere on March 12th in Los Angeles. The Hunger Games opens in wide release and IMAX on March 23rd.
