As Marvel is all about social media, the studio assembled a few of the creatives involved in the upcoming superhero pic The Avengers to answer some fan questions on Twitter today. Taking part in the discussion were director Joss Whedon and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Clark Gregg. Appropriately, Jackson kicked off the Q&A by tweeting a picture of himself flipping off the camera. The quartet talked a bit about the film (Whedon denied those ridiculous Spider-Man cameo rumors), and Marvel released a preview of the TV spot for the film that will play during the Super Bowl. The TV spot preview is pretty damn epic, and gives us a fantastic look at Hulk. I have a feeling that this is going to be the Super Bowl movie preview that everyone will be talking about. Furthermore, Marvel announced today that not only will The Avengers be released in 3D this May, but they’re also re-mastering the film for IMAX screens. So if you’re looking for a ridiculously immersive experience, check out your favorite superheroes in IMAX 3D.
Hit the jump for some of the highlights from the Twitter Q&A, and to check out the Super Bowl preview. The Avengers opens in IMAX 3D, 3D, and regular ol’ 2D on May 4th.

The way of the future indeed. As more evidence that Twitter is becoming the glue that holds all forms of media together, Marvel has announced that director Joss Whedon and cast members from The Avengers will be participating in a live Twitter Q&A. The “Global Twitter Chat” will take place on Tuesday, January 31st at 11am PST and will include Whedon and stars Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg. As if the chance to ask Joss Whedon questions wasn’t enticement enough, fans will also have the opportunity to answer Avengers trivia for a chance to win Avengers prize packs. It’s an Avengers extravaganza! Hit the jump for more, including confirmation of at 30-second TV spot for the film during the Super Bowl.

Earlier this week we brought you images from Empire Magazine’s special preview on Marvel’s The Avengers. Now, Marvel has released the images in hi-res along with some new looks at Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a casual, un-Hulked Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) with Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Speaking of Stark, if you didn’t get a chance to check out his $10 million Acura that Steve posted yesterday, click here to see it.
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, also stars Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor, as well as Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Tom Hiddleston also returns as the villainous Loki. The Avengers assemble on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the images.

Actress Abigail Spencer (Mad Men) has joined Brin Hill‘s supernatural romance In Your Eyes, which was written by Joss Whedon. Vulture‘s report makes it sound like Whedon will direct the movie, but unless he’s given one supernatural romance film to Hill and kept one for himself, I believe Spencer is on board In Your Eyes. Even Spencer’s statement never says Whedon is directing. She says she starts filming in a month (Whedon is still probably doing post-production on The Avengers) and “It’s my first time [doing a project with Whedon], but I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’m so excited to do it.” So technically she is working with him, but it’s misleading to imply that he’s directing.
Then again, it may also be understandable confusion. After all, he directed a micro-budgeted adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing in twelve days and no one knew until after it was wrapped. He’s a busy dude.

The Avengers is smorgasbord of superheroes and while it’s possible to do the movie from multiple perspective, writer-director Joss Whedon says we’ll see the movie mostly through one character’s eyes. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Whedon explains,
“I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.”
Hit the jump for my thoughts on Whedon’s approach. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Producer Joss Whedon and director/co-writer Drew Goddard have been coy about how The Cabin in the Woods turns the eponymous horror sub-genre on its head. The first trailer for the movie has gone online and now we can see what they meant. The Cabin in the Woods genre usually revolves around something supernatural with only a mystical explanation as a vague guide. Judging by the trailer, it looks like Whedon and Goddard have thrown together the scientific in the supernatural. It was an approach Whedon took in the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but instead of Frankenstein, Cabin looks something more along the lines of Hostel where hapless tourists are subjected to the sadistic whims of a shadowy organization. That organization also has forcefields.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kanz, Jesse Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Jenkins. The Cabin in the Woods opens April 13, 2012.

In April, Drew Goddard‘s The Cabin in the Woods finally found distribution. The movie was set to be released by MGM, but then the studio had a financial meltdown and the horror film (co-written by Joss Whedon) became trapped in limbo. Nothing is known about the film other than the vague synopsis, which claims the horror flick will turn the Cabin-in-the-Woods sub-genre inside-out. Judging by this new teaser poster, that description may be literal. It’s an eye-catching image, but I prefer the taglines from the 2009 series of teaser posters.

Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers is in uncharted territory when it comes to superhero movies. Every superhero or superhero team stand in its own universe and every movie keeps the focus on that superhero or team. The Avengers is pulling characters we’ve seen in other movies and throwing them all together. Whedon has had to figure out how to not only keep the established personalities of these characters, but also explore how they’ll change in a group dynamic, while still giving them an arc that will lead to their next solo adventure.
Whedon recently explained what we can expect to see from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Hit the jump for more. The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, and Tom Hiddleston. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Today’s Amazon Gold Box Deal of the Day is Joss Whedon‘s Firefly – The Complete Series on either DVD or Blu-ray for 70% off. If you’ve only heard the buzz on this great show, today is your best chance to check it out for a fraction of its regular price. Here’s the links and hit the jump for the list of special features. Firefly starred Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher and Ron Glass.

Joss Whedon was attached to write and direct an adaptation of Wonder Woman, but the fell apart in February 2007, which worked out because A) he got to do The Avengers, and B) it sounds like his Wonder Woman story was terrible. In a recent interview, Whedon says that his take on the character would have the Amazonian princess be a naive globetrotter who is overwhelmed by man’s inhumanity to man, but thanks to love-interest Steve Trevor, she learns how to deal with it. I understand Whedon didn’t want to make Flying Buffy, but I’m a little disappointed that a guy who knows how to write strong female characters would plot a script where the female lead can’t find her way without a man telling her to basically grow-up.

Joss Whedon recently wrapped shooting on his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing for his and Kai Cole‘s “micro-studio” Bellwether Pictures. According to Deadline, Bellwether has now moved on to the supernatural romance In Your Eyes. Brin Hill will direct Whedon’s script “about two seemingly polar opposites who are deeply connected in ways neither could have ever imagined.” Hill previously directed the basketball drama Ball Don’t Lie and co-wrote the upcoming break-dancing flick Planet B Boy.

Pretty much everyone was taken aback yesterday when it was announced that Joss Whedon had completed filming an entire movie not called The Avengers. The writer-director was able to compile and shoot an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing directly after wrapping The Avengers without a single tweet getting out. He shot the pic at his house in 12 days with a cast made up of Whedon regulars. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, Whedon and some of the cast members have opened up about the secret project (which will be black-and-white) and how they pulled it off. Hit the jump to see what they had to say and for a look at the first images from the film.

For Joss Whedon, it looks like there’s always time for Shakespeare. One would think that work on The Avengers would consume almost all of the writer-director’s schedule, but apparently he’s been able to squeeze in the mysterious project Much Ado about Nothing. Since the website says “Based on a Play”, presumably it means the one by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s romantic-comedy centers around two couples: the lively and interesting Beatrice and Benedict, and the mopey and less-interesting Claudio and Hero. Both couples a betrayed by the villainous Don John, but love wins out in the end and both couples end up getting married. Despite the lack of supernatural or sci-fi elements, it’s a story that fits nicely into Whedon’s wheelhouse of characters.
Nathan Fillion revealed the project by tweeting a link to the website, and plenty of the usual Whedon suspects have been rounded up for the cast. In addition to Fillion, there’s Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Tom Lenk, Ashley Johnson, Fran Kranz, Reed Diamond, Riki Lindhome, Sean Maher, plus recent collaborator Clark Gregg along with a bunch of new faces. If you’re wondering how a project like this flies under the radar until now, it’s probably because it was a low-budget affair that Whedon cranked out over the course of a few weekends. The photo above is from the website, but we don’t know if it’s an image from the movie, referencing from the movie, or if it’s just how Bellwether Pictures like to congratulate its productions. I’m eager to find out Whedon’s take on the material and how he plans to distribute the picture. [Update: A full press release has appeared on the website, revealing more details about the project including who's playing what role. Hit the jump to read.]

As evidenced by ARRI, Panavision, and Aaton ceasing production of film cameras, we live in an ever-increasing digital world. More and more filmmakers are choosing to shoot their pictures digitally instead of on traditional film. What may surprise you, however, is that the iPhone is one of those digital cameras that directors are turning to, and it was recently used on a very, very big movie. Seamus McGarvey, the director of photography on Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, recently copped to using the iPhone on the all-star superhero movie. In fact, some of the iPhone shots are actually in the trailer that was recently released. Hit the jump for more [Update: McGarvey says he was misquoted. Hit the jump for an explanation.]

The first trailer for writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is now available online. Quick impression: I really like what I see. The plot is simple and to the point: Loki wants to destroy the Earth, and Nick Fury puts a team of superheroes together to stop him. While this may be a “team”, the star of the trailer (and perhaps the movie; we’ll see) is Robert Downey Jr. He gets both the laugh lines and the bad-ass lines. I don’t think anyone else talks except for Loki, Nick Fury, and Captain America. The only thing that’s awful is the music that plays in the second half of the trailer, but that’s no fault of the movie.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and Cobie Smulders. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th, 2012.
