4 New Clips and 8 Minutes of Behind-the-Scenes Footage from MIRROR MIRROR

We’ve been provided with four clips and some behind-the-scenes footage from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White film Mirror Mirror. The tone is still incredibly light, but it’s a bit less “farce” than what we saw in the trailers.  The best way I can describe Mirror Mirror (based on these clips) is that it’s like a classic Disney animated film has been magically transformed into live-action; the actors and environments are real, but it retains all the dialogue, costumes, and action/movements from its previously animated iteration.  I would imagine the film wouldn’t appear near as ridiculous if everything was animated, but when you have actors wearing goofy hats and spouting corny line after corny line, it all seems bizarre.  That said, I do think Mirror Mirror comes off quite a bit better in these clips than it did in that atrocious first trailer.

Hit the jump to check out the clips for yourself, along with some behind-the-scenes footage. The film stars Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, and Nathan Lane. Mirror Mirror opens on March 30th.

New Images from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White Movie MIRROR MIRROR

A few new images from director Tarsem Singh’s take on Snow White Mirror Mirror, have gone online. The film still looks really, really bad and unendingly silly, as we see Nathan Lane wearing some sort of antennae hat in this batch of photos. I’m not exactly sure what Singh was going for, but the movie just looks beyond ridiculous. Those worried about the fact that we have two Snow White movies coming out this year can rest easy; Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman couldn’t be more different.

Hit the jump to check out the new images. Mirror Mirror opens on March 30th.

New Posters for LOCKOUT, MIRROR MIRROR, and Kevin Macdonald’s Documentary MARLEY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 17th, 2012 at 1:19 pm

lockout-mirror-mirror-marley-poster-slice

We’ve got a few new posters to share with you today. First up is the debut one-sheet for the sci-fi action pic Lockout. The first couple of international trailers for this film had me surprisingly excited, as they showcased a wise-cracking Guy Pearce and a strangely goofy execution. Then the domestic marketing kicked in. This poster echoes the US trailers that scream “This is a big action movie with explosions that’s like Taken but not!” I’m still hoping that the actual tone skews more on the strange side, and the US marketing materials are simply the studio trying to sell the movie to teenage boys eager for more eye violations courtesy of Michael Bay.

Additionally, we’ve got a new international poster for the very light and fluffy Snow White pic Mirror Mirror, as well as a first poster for Kevin Macdonald’s (The Last King of Scotland) documentary Marley. Mirror Mirror continues to look like a farce, and this poster plays up the cutesy aspect of the pic, but Macdonald’s Marley poster is spot on. Hit the jump to check out the posters. Both Lockout and Marley open April 20th, while Mirror Mirror opens March 16th.

It’s been over a year since we last heard about the feature adaptation of the Pulitzer/Tony-winning play August: Osage County.  But with two stars like Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts attached, you knew The Weinstein Co. would circle back to the project eventually once schedules could be aligned.  The studio and director John Wells (Company Men) are moving forward on August with a fall start date in mind.  Tracy Letts‘ play follows “the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.”  Streep will play the pill-popping matriarch; Roberts will play her daughter.  More after the jump:

Seeing as it’s already February and that little furry rodent has predicted six more weeks of winter, we thought we’d take a look ahead to some March movie releases. Coincidentally, three big March movies have recently released new posters. First up is Disney’s March 9th release, John Carter, starring Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War vet transplanted onto Mars, in an Andrew Stanton-directed picture. Next is the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed 21 Jump Street, a March 16th release starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as two screw-up cops who infiltrate a local high school drug ring. Finally, we have a new poster from the Tarsem Singh project, Mirror Mirror, a Snow White adaptation featuring Lily Collins and Julia Roberts which opens March 30th. MIRROR MIRROR International Trailer

After we reported that Relativity Media was pushing its Snow White project Mirror Mirror back until March 30th, the studio decided to release a new international trailer. While it’s still nowhere near as mature or action-filled as the Universal counterpart Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, it’s heads above the horrendous first trailer. This is more along the lines of what I was expecting from director Tarsem Singh as I can at least pick up on his presence here.

Mirror Mirror stars Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

The creator of Glee, Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story has a feature film project in the works and is stocking it with an all-star cast. Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of Tony Award-winning play, The Normal Heart, can now count Julia Roberts and Alec Baldwin among its stars that will join Mark Ruffalo. The autobiographical drama written by Larry Kramer, who also wrote the feature script, chronicles the rise of HIV/AIDS among New York’s gay community in the 1980s. Roberts will play wheel-chair bound doctor, Emma Brookner, who is one of the city’s few physicians who acknowledges the severity of the disease. Baldwin will play the brother to Ruffalo’s Ned Weeks. Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) are also joining the cast. Hit the jump for more on The Normal Heart.

LARRY CROWNE DVD Review

by Scott Wampler    Posted: December 23rd, 2011 at 6:12 am

For as long as I can remember, Tom Hanks has been the reigning champ of the romantic comedy genre.  Oh, sure, upstarts have come along every few years to try and overthrow the dude’s throne, but if you’ve ever seen Splash, Sleepless in Seattle, or Bachelor Party (What?  That’s not a rom-com?  Well, what about the donkey?), you know that Hanks is pretty much undefeatable in these kinda roles:  his everyman likability, his universal demographic appeal, his longstanding reputation as the nicest dude in Hollywood—it all adds up to a rom-com master.  This year’s Larry Crowne, recently released on DVD, will do nothing to tarnish that reputation…but it also won’t do anything to advance it.  Read on for the full review, after the jump.

New Posters for STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D and MIRROR MIRROR

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 19th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

We’ve got a couple of new posters to share with you today. First up is an international poster for the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance. There’s not much to it, as it’s basically just Yoda getting his stare on. Apparently overseas Yoda is the big draw to get people to see Episode I again, while in the U.S. it’s Darth Maul and pod racers. Additionally, we’ve got a poster for Tarsem Singh’s Snow White film Mirror Mirror. Every new piece of marketing material for the flick makes it less and less appealing. The trailer was beyond strange, and this poster ups the “fluffy” factor even more. Maybe kids will respond, but at this point I don’t see teenagers/adults flocking to this Snow White tale.

Hit the jump to check out the posters. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D opens February 10th, 2012, and Mirror Mirror is slated for March 16th, 2012.

Julia Roberts to Produce and Star in Workplace Comedy SECOND ACT

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: November 30th, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Julia Roberts is attached to star in Second Act, a workplace comedy set up at New Regency.  According to THR, the plot centers on “a woman who has never worked and is forced to to take a job.”  The project is still searching for a writer and director; Roberts will produce alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Trudie Styler, and Celine Rattray.

After a solid hit in 2010 with Eat Pray Love, Roberts is coming off the critical and commercial failure Larry Crowne, and heading into the very risky territory of the fairy tale farce Mirror, Mirror (the first trailer induces shudders).  The logline for Second Act isn’t especially promising, but that famous smile can work wonders with a simple premise.  In the coming weeks, we’ll see if this becomes Roberts’ next movie.  Roberts is also attached to August: Osage County with Meryl Streep and another collaboration with Eat Pray Love director Ryan Murphy, among other projects.

Julia Roberts is heading back to work.

The actress is attached to produce and star in Second Act, a New Regency workplace comedy project in development. Roberts will produce via her Red Om Films label, along with her former agent and producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray and their Maven Pictures label are involved as producers as well.

PHOTOS: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins Enchant in Relativity’s ‘Mirror Mirror’:

The project, which does not have a writer or director on board, centers on a woman who has never worked and is forced to to take a job.

Roberts is becoming a bit more active as an actress. She co-toplined Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks this past summer and next stars as the Evil Queen in Relativity’s Snow White movie, Mirror Mirror, set for release in March.

Since Arnon Milchan took over the reigns of Regency and hired CEO Brad Weston, the company has been on the move, boarding the Mark Wahlberg project Broken City and snagging the rights to Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock. The company also is funding a new Alejando Gonzalez Inarritu movie, The Revenant.

First Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s MIRROR MIRROR Starring Julia Roberts

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 15th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Fresh off the first trailer for the battle-heavy Snow White and the Huntsman, Relativity has released the first look at their take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror. Directed by Tarsem Singh, the fantasy film is described as a “comedic adventure”and centers on Snow White (Lily Collins) setting out to reclaim her birthright from the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts). Mirror Mirror couldn’t be more different from Huntsman. It’s light, fluffy, and goofy. It’s also pretty close to terrible. The film almost comes off as a farce, it’s just so incredibly goofy. It’s as if Adam Sandler‘s Happy Madison decided to make a Snow White movie. With Tarsem at the helm, we’re sure to be in for a visual treat, but I fear the tone may painfully overshadow the extravagant visuals.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer for yourself. The film also stars Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, and Sean Bean.

New Images from Tarsem Singh’s SNOW WHITE Film including First Look at Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen [Updated With More Images]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 6th, 2011 at 7:56 am

snow-white-movie-image-julia-roberts-slice-01

Six new images from Tarsem Singh’s untitled Snow White film have gone online.  Since this is a Tarsem film, the costumes and set design are opulent and grandiose to the point of being comical.  One of the images has Snow White (Lily Collins) wearing a swan for a hat.  Aside from swan hats, the images also provide the first look at Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Armie Hammer as the Prince, and the seven dwarfs.  This movie isn’t to be confused with the other Snow White film set for 2012, Snow White and the Huntsman.  While that one is being set up as a kind of Lord of the Rings-style fantasy adventure, screenwriter Jason Keller calls Singh’s Snow White movie a “comedic adventure” with action elements.  The story has Snow trying to reclaim her birthright from the Evil Queen and fighting with her for the affection of the Prince.  I’m not sure how swan hats figure into that.

Hit the jump to check out the images plus more info on the film, which also stars Nathan Lane and Sean Bean.  The untitled Snow White movie opens March 16, 2012.

Trailer for FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Julia Roberts

A trailer for writer/director Dennis Lee’s drama Fireflies in the Garden has landed online. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere and Shannon Lucio, the film is a semi-autobiographical tale from Lee that focuses on the tumultuous relationships within the Taylor family that are confronted after a tragic car accident kills the matriarch (Roberts).

The film was actually completed back in 2008 and is just now making its way to theaters. Given the amount of star power it contains, I wouldn’t think that bodes well for the final product. That said, I think the cut on display here is plenty effective in setting up the tension between father (Dafoe) and son (Reynolds). Check out the trailer after the jump. Fireflies in the Garden will open to select markets on October 14th.

LARRY CROWNE Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 1st, 2011 at 6:04 am

Tom_Hanks_Larry_Crowne_image slice

In 1996, Tom Hanks made his writing-directing debut with the harmless but charming That Thing You Do.  After writing and directing episodes of the miniseries From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, Hanks has returned to feature films with Larry Crowne.  While his direction remains competent and innocuous, his screenplay, which he co-wrote with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) relies far too heavily on meaningless quirks and undercooks both the title character’s development and his romance with his public speaking teacher, Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts).  Larry Crowne manages to deliver a steady stream of laughs, but like everything else in the movie, they feel unearned.
