Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie and Richard Jenkins Join Robert Redford’s THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

Robert Redford continues to fill out the cast for his next directorial project, as Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie and Richard Jenkins are the latest to join The Company You Keep. Redford will direct and star in the film that also features Shia LaBeouf, and recent additions Nick Nolte and Brit Marling. Based on the novel of the same name by Neal Gordon, the story centers on a wanted former Weather Underground militant (Redford) who goes on the run after an ambitious young reporter (LaBeouf) exposes his true identity.

Deadline reports that Sarandon and Christie play ex-Weather Underground members, while Jenkins will play a college professor who is a link to other members in hiding. While the cast is pretty great, I’m hoping Redford tries a decidedly less heavy-handed approach than his last directorial projects. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

RED RIDING HOOD Blu-ray Review

From the outset, Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood sounds kind of… great? Seriously. Her best film is easily Thirteen, which dealt with young girls coming to understand their sexuality (and power therein), and Hardwicke brought the right temperament to the first Twilight film – she got the sexuality right and winked at the audience about the material’s inherent silliness. For Red Riding Hood, she has a great cast (Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Virginia Madsen, Lukas Haas, Julie Christie), the idea of the wolf as sexual predator, and the same sort of romantic triangle. If the film had done anything right, it might have – if nothing else – achieved cult status. Too bad the film is garbage in any cut. Warner Bros. has sent over seven clips from director Catherine Hardwicke’s (Twilight, Thirteen) thriller Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet) stars as Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between a brooding outsider (Shiloh Fernandez) and the wealthy man of her parents’ dreams (Max Irons).  Unfortunately, one of them may be the wolf that terrorizes her village.  (Such virility is a turn-on, but werewolves are notorious commitment-phobes.)  Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie also star.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis and clips:

I can’t watch the trailer for Red Riding Hood without laughing.  It looks like a parody of a real movie with its overly sinister take on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale.  I know the Brothers Grimm’s original tales were dark, but you’re not going to turn “My, what big eyes you have,” into a chilling piece of horror dialogue.  While the story may turn out to be a problem, cinematographer Mandy Walker has done a solid job capturing the gothic tone that director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) wanted to convey.

New Images from RED RIDING HOOD

A couple of days ago we brought you the new trailer for Red Riding Hood, and today we’ve got some new images from director Catherine Hardwicke’s (Twilight) loose adaptation of the classic fairy tale. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as the titular girl in red (with a hood, no less), with Gary Oldman, Virginia Madsen, Julie Christie, Lukas Haas, Max Irons (Dorian Gray) and Shiloh Fernandez (United States of Tara) rounding out the cast. First Trailer and Poster for Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD Starring Amanda Seyfried

Today is officially “trailer day” as the recent teaser for Pixar’s Cars 2 and the trailer to Jason Statham’s actioner The Mechanic can attest. Next up is the official premier of the trailer to Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood starring the lovely Amanda Seyfried in the titular role. The trailer is actually quite impressive from a visual standpoint, very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, what with its creepy Hammer-esque designs, and heavily contrasted colors. It goes without saying the film boasts a decidedly Twilight-ish vibe, complete with leading man Shiloh Fernandez doing his best Robert Pattinson impersonation (he even has the hair).

Fox Searchlight Checks in to THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL; Invites Julie Christie, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Peter O’Toole, and Dev Patel

In what some may see as an attempt to recapture the Oscar/box office magic of Slumdog Millionaire, Fox Searchlight will adapt the Deborah Moggach novel These Foolish Things for the screen.  With the new title The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the film will follow “a movie about a group of British senior citizens who travel to India to live out their dotage — an outsourcing, after a fashion — and find a new lease on life.”

24 Frames reports that Fox Searchlight is reaching out to Julie Christie, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, and Peter O’Toole to star. (For those keeping track, there are twenty Oscar nominations in that group.)  Meanwhile, Slumdog star Dev Patel is in talks to co-star, and John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) is on the top of the studio’s director wishlist.  Hit the jump for the synopsis for These Foolish Things.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

A classic is a classic is a classic. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is one of the most successful films of all time. Will it be a classic like the Lord of the Rings films seem geared to be? Is a film like Brian De Palma’s Blow Out a classic? Is it the moniker? Are all Criterion Collection films classics? Perhaps it’s just cultural saturation with a dollop of either instant or eventual critical respect. For the most part anniversary releases are just to drum up some money, and keep people interested in something they may have forgotten, so that a film is well known enough to get an anniversary release just means it has made money, or found something of an audience.

Is David Lean’s Doctor Zhivago a classic? Is a classic transcendent of quality? Zhivago isn’t top three Lean, and it may not be top five. But it was very successful upon release and it has its fans, even if it has never been a critical darling like Laurence of Arabia or Brief Encounter. Omar Sharif stars as the titular Doctor, who charts the rise of communism in Russia as he watches Lara (Julie Christie) as she almost marries a man who goes hard for the communists (Tom Courtenay), is taken by an older gentleman, and her mother’s lover Komarovsky (Rod Steiger), and then finds herself the lover of Zhivago, even as he’s married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin). Truly, it’s an epic film and my review of Doctor Zhivago on Blu-ray after the jump.

Max Irons, Julie Christie, and Gary Oldman Join Catherine Hardwicke’s GIRL WITH THE RED RIDING HOOD

Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) has joined Amanda Seyfried and Shiloh Fernandez in Catherine Hardwicke’s Girl with the Red Riding Hood.  Heat Vision also reports that Julie Christie and Gary Oldman are in talks to come on board the flick, which is a gothic retelling of the “Little Red Riding Hood” fairy tale.  This version is set in a medieval village that’s trying to fend off a werewolf.

Irons will play “Henri, the son of a blacksmith who, through an arrangement, is to marry Seyfried’s character.”  However, we learned earlier this week that Fernandez was cast as, “an orphaned woodcutter for whom Seyfried falls, much to the displeasure of her family.”  This likely means that Henri is a jerk and/or is going to die horribly so Seyfried and Fernandez can be together.  As for Christie, she would play Seyfried’s grandmother.  As for Oldman, he would be “Father Soloman, a man whose title is the Witchfinder General and whose job is to find and kill the werewolf.”  One of the coolest things you can put on a resume or business card is “Witchfinder General.”

Memento Films Has Ethan Hawke Loving Elegant Widows and Dominic Cooper Loving Blood Sucked Out of Drunk Chicks

Screen Daily has a report on a couple of flicks Memento Films is bringing to this year’s Berlin Film Festival.  First up is The Woman in the Fifth, a supernatural thriller from Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) starring Ethan Hawke and Kristen Scott Thomas.  The film is based on Douglas Kennedy’s novel about an American writer (Hawke) in Paris who embarks on an affair with an elegant and mysterious widow and who might have something to do with the murders that start taking place around him.  Might have something to do?  Elegant and mysterious widows are always responsible for surrounding murders.  Everyone knows that.

16 Movie Clips from NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU (Almost 16 Minutes of Footage)

With the short film anthology “New York, I Love You” (a sort of sequel to “Paris, je t’aime”) set for release October 16^th, Vivendi Entertainment has released a ton of clips and I’ve posted all of them after the jump. While most film’s get four to eight clips released for promotional purposes, due to how large the cast is and how each person needs a clip when promoting the movie on a talk show, the studio has released a whopping 16 clips and it’s about sixteen minutes of the movie. So if you’ve been waiting for the film, you can see a lot of it right now. If you’re not familiar with “New York, I Love You”, the film’s got a huge cast and eleven directors telling stories about New York City and love. Take a look:

The first trailer for Vivendi Entertainment’s “New York, I Love You” has been released. This is the film that’s like “Paris, je t’aime”, but while that one had no connective tissue, somehow “New York, I Love You” ties most or all of the short films together.

While a feature film made up of a lot of short films might not appeal to all of you, the cast is ridiculous and it’s something I can’t wait to see. If you’re curious, watch the trailer after the jump. I’ve also included all the director’s involved and the full cast:

The first poster has been released for “New York, I Love You”. This is the anthology film that features many short films about love in the city that never sleeps. While many of you might not be excited about a feature film that’s made up of only shorts, take a look at this cast:
