Sequel News: Nicolas Cage Wants to Play a Ghost in WICKER MAN Sequel; Julie Delpy Talks Possible BEFORE SUNSET Follow-Up

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 27th, 2012 at 1:46 pm

We’ve got a couple of tidbits regarding sequel news to share today: one sensible and one slightly insane. We’ll start with the sensible sequel. Actress Julie Delpy recently told a Sundance audience (per Deadline) that she’s done with acting and wishes to focus on writing and directing. However, she’s still keeping her options open for a third film in the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset series with Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater. She told EW (via The Playlist):

“We’re thinking about [a third film], but the second one we only did because we had a good setup, and ideas. I don’t think we would do it if we find the right thing to say. If the third one’s not good, it’s not good for the two before. We’re careful. We’re thinking about it, but it’s not official.”

The first two films each take place during one day and center on the romantic relationship between Delpy and Hawke. Hit the jump for news regarding a sequel to The Wicker Man remake in which Nicolas Cage would play a ghost. Seriously.

Julie Delpy to Direct Biopic THE RIGHT PROFILE on Joe Strummer, Lead Vocalist of The Clash

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 21st, 2011 at 4:53 pm

After we reported that Julie Delpy will be writing/starring in a third film in the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset series, news broke on the Oscar-nominated actress’s next project. Delpy will direct the biopic of Joe Strummer, the frontman for English punk band “The Clash.” The production by Simon Halfon (Sleuth) has been titled The Right Profile after a track on “London Calling,” the band’s 1979 album.

The biopic will obviously portray Strummer’s life, but will focus on his planned disappearance from the public eye soon before the release of their 1982 album, “Combat Rock.” Strummer tragically passed away in December of 2002, a month prior to being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with “The Clash.” Hit the jump for more on The Right Profile.

Ethan Hawke Says He, Julie Delpy, and Richard Linklater Plan to Write New BEFORE SUNRISE Sequel Next Year

While I think director Richard Linklater‘s fascination with the art of conversation tends to weaken his movies, sometimes it creates their entire soul and works beautifully.  That’s the case with Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, which follow two people (played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) and the emotional bond they form in their short time together.  Hawke and Delpy collaborated with Linklater on the script for Sunset (and did uncredited work on Sunrise), and now Hawke says the trio have been heavily discussing a sequel over the last six months and will try to write the screenplay next year.

Hit the jump for more on the third Sunrise film plus an update on Linklater and Hawke’s long-in-production film, Boyhood.

Chris Rock Joins Julie Delpy’s 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK

In a bit of casting news that’s surprising (though not entirely out of left field), Chris Rock has joined the cast of Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in New York, the sequel to 2007′s 2 Days in Paris.  Delpy wrote, directed, and starred in the first film, which saw her on vacation with her American boyfriend in France.  Delpy stated that her follow-up is about “the difficulty of relationships, but also about the main character’s evolution in general.”  Details are scarce in the Production Weekly tweet that broke the news, though TheWrap speculates that Rock may play Delpy’s new lover in the sequel.  Production is set to begin this October with hopes of landing a spot in Cannes 2011.

The most recent phase of Rock’s career has revealed the funnyman to be a disciple of world cinema.  Both Death at a Funeral and I Think I Love My Wife were inspired by foreign comedies, with a remake of the French Le premiere toile in the works.  He’s even penning the script for the Mike Nichol take on Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. Hit the jump for the official synopsis of 2 Days in Paris.

Casting Call: Terrence Howard May Get It On as Marvin Gaye, Jessica Biel Hunts THE TALL MAN, and Julie Delpy Visits THE SKYLAB

Iron Man 2 may have shut him out, but Terrence Howard is in talks for the high profile role of Marvin Gaye in Cameron Crowe’s planned biopic of the renowned soul singer.  Howard commented, “Nothing’s been signed on paper yet.  Everybody who loves music will hate me if I get this one wrong.”  Indeed we will, Mr. Howard, but there is reason to have faith: Howard was rather improbably nominated for an Oscar for his role in the hip hop tale, the music-heavy Hustle & Flow.  Crowe (Almost Famous) has “secretly” been working on the film for three and a half years, somewhat prolonged by the fact that Will Smith reportedly rejected the role.  The R&B legend is an obvious choice for a biopic, as Gaye is an icon whose life story has yet to be told on the big screen.  [via Deadline]

Hit the jump for details on Jessica Biel’s relationship with The Tall Man and triple-threat Julie Delpy’s out-of-this-world fascination with The Skylab.

Ethan Hawke on a 3rd BEFORE SUNRISE/BEFORE SUNSET Movie

At this morning’s press junket for Daybreakers, I was able to ask Ethan Hawke his thoughts on doing a third film in the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset universe.  If you’re a fan (like me) of these two amazing movies and are hoping they’d do a third film, it sounds like they aren’t against it, but don’t expect to see it anytime soon.  That’s because even though people constantly give Hawke ideas for the film, he says, “My thought is we will make one as soon as everybody has forgotten about it.”

He also revealed, “We had a version of that movie that happened two years later.  But once it took us five years and we can’t get the money to make that movie we have to rethink it. So elements or lines from that script stayed.  When we first finished Before Sunset there was an idea that we would do.  Julie and I wanted to do a short film the next year that we thought would be really fun to do like a five minute short and then put it in the vault so to speak and then fifteen years later make another film.”

Exclusive: Richard Linklater on BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET, and Would They Ever Make a Third Film

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 24th, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Richard_Linklater_slice (2).jpg

Two of my favorite movies are Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.  The two films star Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and if you’ve ever seen these two great movies, you know how special they are.  The first film takes place over one night in Vienna, and the second film takes place in Paris.  Since I don’t want to spoil the adventure for those who haven’t seen them, all I want to say is…if you have a chance, watch the first movie.  Then, wait a few months and watch the second film.  You’ve got to wait for the full effect.  Trust me on this.

But for those who have seen the films and love them as much as I do, you’re going to love my five minute conversation with director Richard Linklater about the films and does he think they’ll make a third one.  The only thing to know is…you’ll have to sit through me telling him how the Before Sunrise literally changed my life.  After I get that out of my system, we have a great back and forth on the films and the future.  This interview is aimed at fans of the films.  Don’t spoil the experience by watching this till you have seen them….
