In 2007, the smash hit Happy Feet won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. So, it’s certainly no surprise that writer/director George Miller and some of the voice cast returned for Happy Feet Two. This time around, Erik, the tiny son of master tap dancer Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood) and the vocally gifted Gloria (voiced by Pink), runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven (Hank Azaria), the only penguin who can fly. When violent shifts in the glacial landscape of Antarctica threaten the survival of the entire Emperor penguin community, Mumble and Erik must rally all creatures, both great and small, to save them.
During a press conference to promote the film, George Miller talked about collaborating with tap master Savion Glover for the penguin choreography, the importance of following nature and natural history for the film’s story, how despite our differences we can overcome the chaos of the world, what a privilege it was for him to see this voice cast working and recording together, and how he has no idea what the story for Happy Feet 3 could be, at this point. He also talked about his Justice League movie with Common as Green Lantern that never got off the ground, and whether Mad Max: Fury Road will ever actually happen. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Although previously known for his live-action work, including Babe: Pig in the City, Lorenzo’s Oil, The Witches of Eastwick and his feature directorial debut Mad Max, writer/director George Miller has also made his mark in the animated world with the smash hit Happy Feet (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2007) and its sequel, Happy Feet Two.
While we will run what he had to say about that film, closer to its November 18th release date, we did want to share what he had to say about his live-action work, his Justice League movie with Common as Green Lantern that never got off the ground, and whether Mad Max: Fury Road will ever actually happen. Warner Bros. Studios is having a very busy week, but not so busy as to forget a little thing called Comic-Con 2011. Warner Bros. Entertainment will once again be teaming up with the con to sponsor the “Comic-Con International: San Diego Official Bag.” The more than 130,000 bags (available to badge-holders upon check in) will feature official Comic-Con art on one side and one of 10 franchises in the WB/DC universe on the other. Featured titles include Batman: Arkham City, ThunderCats and Fringe. Hit the jump to check them out!
To prevent your arms from getting tired from hauling all your swag around, this year the bags will turn you into a walking advertisement double as backpacks! Personally, I’m willing to stab a guy in the eye for a ThunderCats bag. Knowing my luck, I’ll get The Vampire Diaries. If you guys hear about some black market bag trading going on, be sure to let me know.

Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov has recently spoken about studio plans to release a Justice League movie in 2013. (I’m still taken aback by that timeline, but there it is.) Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven have both gone on record that their Batman exists in his own superhero universe. At the UK premiere of Sucker Punch, Hey U Guys took the opportunity to ask Superman reboot director Zack Snyder how his take on Superman fit in with the planning on Justice League. Snyder responded:
“It doesn’t. Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be it’s own thing with it’s own Batman and own Superman. We’ll be over here with our movie and they’ll kinda get to do it twice which is kinda cool.”

Christopher Nolan has publicly stated that The Dark Knight Rises will be his final Batman film, and Warner Bros. is already looking ahead to the future of the franchise. As we reported last night, the studio is currently planning a Justice League movie for 2013 and Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov tells Hero Complex that scripts are being written for Flash and Wonder Woman (the Wonder Woman project would exist separately from the upcoming NBC show). But most intriguing is what the studio plans to do with its marquee superhero, Batman:
“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”
Hit the jump for my thoughts on the future of the Batman franchise.

Warner Bros. president Alan Horn is retiring this week after 12 years as the man with final say on every studio project. Jeff Robinov will succeed Horn, and the LA Times profile of the apparently awkward studio executive confirms what we knew about WB’s tentpole strategy in a post-Harry Potter world: fill the void with DC Comics superheroes. The specifics of that superhero slate might surprise you. The LA Times writes: “[Robinov is] aiming to release new Batman and Superman films in 2012 and Justice League, a teaming of DC’s top heroes, in 2013.”
We’re well aware of The Dark Knight Rises (July 20, 2012) and the Superman reboot (December 2012), but it’s news to us if there are even tentative plans to release Justice League in two years. A discussion of whether or not it’s even feasible after the jump. [Update: Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov has confirmed to Hero Complex that the studio plans to release a Justice League movie in 2013.]

Earlier today I finally attended my first Toy Fair in New York City. As a former toy collector, I’ve always wanted to check out the biggest toy show of the year. While I thought the aisles would be decorated with action figures and super heroes, the reality is, most of the toys on display are aimed at little kids. However, even though I was a bit let down by Toy Fair, I did manage to snap 100 pictures. Included are all the movie related toys that were on display (minus Hasbro as they were off site). So if you’d like to see toys for Green Lantern, Happy Feet 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Star Wars, The Walking Dead, Gremlins, the Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future, The Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Batman, Justice League, and tons of other random things, hit the jump!

This weekend I attended The Social Network press junket in New York City. With Harvard playing a big part in the movie (Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook in his Harvard dorm room), Sony decided to hold the junket at the exclusive Harvard Club in the heart of NYC.
Anyhow, at the junket I was able to interview Armie Hammer, as he plays both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. If you don’t know how Facebook started, the Winklevoss twins were a key component in the creation of Facebook. I’d like to say more…but the movie is so much better if you don’t know the story.
During the interview (which I did with Dave Chen from Slashfilm) Hammer talks about the incredible challenge of playing twins, tells some great behind the scenes stories of working with Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher, and he also talks about almost playing Batman in director George Miller’s Justice League movie. If you’re a fan of Fincher and curious how he makes movies, you definitely want to watch this interview. Hit the jump for more:

Later this year, DC is releasing an album including almost every DC movie, cartoon, and TV show theme song ever. 21 of the 31 tracks have never been released before, including Max Fleischer’s 1941 Superman theme, so if you’re a DC fan you’ll probably want this album. Some of the other tracks include unreleased music from Smallville, Justice League and Superfriends, and the CD will also include re-mastered versions of the Lois & Clark theme along with 7 different Batman themes. The album doesn’t include every single DC theme ever (as Topless Robot points out, the new Teen Titans theme is omitted) but it will have the vast majority of them. Hit the jump for a full track listing.

Before we begin, consider this item to have “RUMOR” stamped across it in big red letters. IESB has repeated some of the possibilities they’ve been hearing for the future of DC Comics in Hollywood. The report acknowledges that some of it seems pretty unlikely, but cool enough to pass along. First off, there’s talk that Christopher Nolan may have accepted the Superman “godfather” gig to better the chances of that his brother and Dark Knight co-writer, Jonah Nolan, would be hired to direct what is reportedly titled The Man of Steel. On top of that, Nolan may be guiding the Superman and Batman franchises toward an eventual Justice League movie that he would helm, hinting at similar shepherding roles in the Green Lantern and (recently progressing) Flash movies.
Cool stuff indeed, but the probability that any of it comes to fruition is worth analyzing after the jump.

Warner Home Video has just released a new clip from the new DC Universe animated movie Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. The animated film will be released on February 23 and it’s rooted in DC Comics’ popular canon of “Crisis” stories depicting parallel worlds with uniquely similar super heroes and villains. The scene WHV released basically sets up the film’s primary conflict with Lex Luthor (voiced by Chris Noth) explaining the plight of his Earth, and attempting to recruit the Justice League to join the battle against the Crime Syndicate. Hi the jump to check it out. I’ve also posted the full trailer.

Over the past few days I’ve been posting “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”. As I explained in the previous articles, I spoke at length with the Sherlock Holmes producer about not only his latest film, but everything he has in development. Since the conversation ran so long, I’ve decided to break up the interview into many smaller parts. I’ve already posted what he said about the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, as well as his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies, and yesterday was about the Bone and Tom and Jerry movies. For today’s article, I’ve got him talking about the Justice League movie, Suicide Squad, Hiding in Time, The Chaser and Stephen King’s It.
