In last week’s “Top 5″ I spent the opening paragraph musing about my anticipation for Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire. I also promised the readers a quick “Before & After” discussion this week which would address whether or not the pic lived up to my expectations. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but said discussion will have to be postponed. I know, I know, I’m disappointed too. Fear not, though, I’m slated to check out the film tonight which means that I’ll be able to deliver on my promise, albeit a week late. In the meantime…
…This week’s “Top 5″ installment brings you interviews with the cast of Underworld: Awakening and the aforementioned Haywire, a gallery of recent films in retro poster form, an ultra-disturbing Rugrats live-action trailer, and all of our Sundance 2012 coverage to date. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

With directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein’s Underworld: Awakening opening this weekend, I recently got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about making the movie. Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, “who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.” Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, and Charles Dance also star.
During my interview with Beckinsale we talked about the action scenes and how they compare to the previous films, how long did she debate about returning to the franchise, pranks on set, what’s her karaoke song, and her thoughts on more Underworld movies. In addition, with Beckinsale also starring in the remake of Total Recall as Lori (originally played by Sharon Stone), she talked about how her Lori compares to Stone’s version and what can fans look forward to in the remake. There are so many ways to steal something, but when it comes to the big score, movies have kept their focus on elaborate heists. How are the criminals going to break into the vault? How will they escape? Couldn’t they put all of this effort into a job that doesn’t risk going to jail? These questions aside, the basic point remains: steal what you want and don’t get caught. But there are so many other ways to accomplish that. Baltasar Kormákur‘s Contraband is a fresh take on the theft genre (unless you’ve seen the original version, the 2008 Icelandic film Reykjavik-Rotterdam) by turning the attention to smuggling. However, the movie always feels torn between what’s safe and familiar and what’s daring and inventive.

Set in New Orleans, Contraband is Mark Whalberg’s new thriller about smuggling on container ships. He plays a blue-collar family man who’s sworn off his former life of crime, until his brother-in-law botches a drug deal and needs his help in order to repay the debt. Whalberg agrees to do one last job, running contraband from Panama on a container ship. Kate Beckinsale plays Whalberg’s wife, Ben Foster his best friend and business partner, and Giovanni Ribisi plays a New Orleans drug runner.
A remake of the Icelandic film Reykjavík-Rotterdam (2008), Contraband is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who played the lead character in the original. At the press conference in New York, Kormákur spoke to a room of journalists about how the project came together, the choice of cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (The Hurt Locker), and his thoughts on the film’s moral ambiguity. Hit the jump for the interview.

We’ve been provided with five clips and sixteen images from director Baltasar Kormákur’s crime thriller Contraband. The film is set in the world of international smuggling and stars Mark Wahlberg as a man trying to escape his days as a criminal. When his brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) botches a deal, Wahlberg’s character must settle his brother-in-law’s debt in order to keep him safe from a drug boss (Giovanni Ribisi). The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, J.K. Simmons, and Diego Luna.

Screen Gems has sent over 5 movie clips and 12 images for Underworld: Awakening, the fourth entry in the Vampires vs. Lycans franchise. Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, “who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.” Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, and Charles Dance also star; Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein directed the January 20, 2012 release. While I’m under embargo from writing what I thought, I suggest watching my interview with Beckinsale from earlier today, as I may have said something on camera.

While certainly one of the most gorgeous actresses in Hollywood, Kate Beckinsale is also one of the more versatile. Sure, she’s had her fair share of romantic roles (Serendipity is one of my utmost guilty pleasures), but Beckinsale is also a bit of a bad ass. She’s probably best known for her work as uber-dangerous vampire Selene in the Underworld series.
Steve got the chance to speak with the actress in anticipation of the fourth installment in the franchise—Underworld: Awakening—and while we’ll have the full interview up closer to the film’s release, we wanted to share a few interesting tidbits with you today. Beckinsale not only mused on the possibility of returning for a fifth Underworld entry (and beyond), but she also talked about her role as Lori in Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake and a particularly brutal fight with co-star Jessica Biel. December was the month of epic soundtrack news, with Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross reuniting for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the more recent announcement of The Hunger Games soundtrack, produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring Taylor Swift. While the musical lineup for the fourth installment in the Underworld series is unlikely to garner an Academy Award, the goth-centric soundtrack is sure to be a commercial success, if the trend from the previous movies continues. The Lakeshore Records album will feature 17 tracks of rock/metal songs that fit in lock-step with the dark energy of Underworld: Awakening. Previous contributors that are making a repeat appearance include Lacuna Coil, Black Light Burns and Linkin Park, with Chester Bennington having contributed a solo track on the first album. The soundtrack will be available in stores on January 17th, three days before Underworld: Awakening hits screens. Hit the jump to check out the full soundtrack.

Screen Gems has released a new set of images for Underworld: Awakening, the fourth entry in the Vampires vs. Lycans franchise. Earlier today, we brought you the Screen Gems trailer for Underworld: Awakening that recapped the last three installments to bring you up to speed on the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Perhaps their original trailer was too confusing. Either way, they’ve just released a new trailer with even more footage, including a better look at the mega-Lycan and India Eisley’s (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) character, Eve, who looks to be a crucial part of the movie’s plot. There is a definite tie-in between the recap trailer released earlier today and the reveal of Eve from this new trailer, but I’ll let you connect the dots.
Underworld: Awakening, directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, also stars Michael Ealy (Seven Pounds). The movie is set to open on January 20th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

With the fourth installment in the Underworld series, Underworld: Awakening, set to open next month, Screen Gems is ramping up the film’s marketing campaign. Today they’ve unveiled a new trailer entitled “Underworld: Legacy” which recounts the story of Kate Beckinsale’s Seline from the past three movies; it’s basically a “Previously on Underworld” short. While I’m not a huge fan of the series, I found this trailer to be quite cool. If you, like me, are hazy on the details of the franchise, this video neatly sums up the past events and gets you primed for Awakening. It also includes an intro from Beckinsale herself.

With the holiday movie season upon us, a few new images from some of the upcoming Oscar contenders have been unveiled. We’ve got a new look at Michael Fassbender in the extremely well-received drama Shame. Fassbender plays a sex-addict opposite Carey Mulligan, and our own Matt Goldberg loved the flick. There’s also a new image of Rooney Mara from David Fincher’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and an ominous image of Gary Oldman from the spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Additionally, we’ve got another look at Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, and an image of Sandra Bullock and Thomas Horn in the adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
But that’s not all! We’ve also got new images from We Bought a Zoo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Haywire, Underworld: Awakening, In the Land of Blood and Honey, New Year’s Eve, and One for the Money. Hit the jump to check them out.

We’ve got a batch of new posters to share with you today. First up is the extraordinary new poster for Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War. Poster art is definitely not dead, and this gorgeous one-sheet is proof. The film stars Christian Bale in the Chinese period pic about the invading Japanese Imperial Army taking over Nanking. The UK quad for Coriolanus is pretty great as well. Marking Ralph Fiennes’s feature directorial debut, the film is based on Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name. The new poster for Underworld: Awakening is a bit uninspired (not to mention confusing; why does Kate Beckinsale want to shoot met?), and the poster for the hockey comedy Goon is underwhelming as well, especially when compared with the film’s previous posters.
Hit the jump to take a look at the posters. The Flowers of War opens in China on December 16th (and in the U.S. sometime in December), Coriolanus opens January 20th, 2012, Underworld: Awakening opens January 20th as well, and Goon will be available VOD February 24th, and in theaters March 30th. [Update: We've been asked to take the Underworld poster down. An official version should be released soon.]

The theatrical trailer for Underworld: Awakening 3D has gone online. The fourth film in the Underworld franchise finds Kate Beckinsale’s Selene waking up to a world where humans have discovered the existence of vampires and werewolves and are working to eradicate both species. We get a better sense of the story here, as a young hybrid girl seems to be the key to the war between humans vs. vampires vs. werewolves. I’m not the biggest fan of the series, but it looks to have more of the action, effects, and blood-suckingness that permeated throughout the other films so fans should be appeased.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Be sure to check out all of Steve’s coverage of the film from his set-visit, including interviews with Beckinsale and directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, as well as a full recap. Underworld: Awakening opens in 3D on January 20th, 2012.
