Jamie Bell and Kate Mara (American Horror Story) have been tapped to star in the romantic comedy Fighting Jacob. Variety reports that Bell will play, “Jacob ‘The Manic Maniac’ Rosenthal, an up-and-coming boxer whose extreme OCD is the key to his success in the ring.” Bell suffers a devastating breakup with Mara’s character, after which he must reevaluate his life and find a medium between his happiness and success as a fighter. Justin Lader wrote the script, and Charlie McDowell (Bye Bye Benjamin) will direct.
Bell is currently filming the promising thriller Snow Piercer with director Bong Joon-ho, while Mara is busy shooting David Fincher’s Netflix series House of Cards with Kevin Spacey. Mara’s sister, Rooney, nabbed an Oscar nomination for her work with Fincher in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Production on Fighting Jacob is slated to begin this summer in Los Angeles.

This is a fair warning to anyone who is reading this and hasn’t been keeping up with our American Horror Story recaps: turn back now or risk ruining some fantastic surprises from this series. When last we left the Harmon house, we learned that Vivien’s (Connie Britton) twins had, not one, but two fathers. We also watched as Ben (Dylan McDermott) came to certain revelations about the house and its inhabitants. Hayden (Kate Mara) was up to her old tricks again and ill-advisedly added a new member to the ghost line-up: Travis (Michael Graziadei). The episode “Spooky Little Girl” ended with a spoon-fed foreshadowing of the birth of Vivien’s demonic (read: antichrist) baby. But what have the other kids, Violet (Taissa Farmiga) and Tate (Evan Peters) been up to? Hit the jump to find out.

People tend to freak out a little when it comes to their ten year high school reunion. They see it as a chance to make up for past regrets, prove how well they’re doing (even if they’re not), and regress a bit to the meaningless drama of our teenage years. Jamie Linden’s Ten Year gets the meaningless drama part. Following a group of male friends and their female appendages, Ten Year features redundant storylines, a dearth of humor, an almost total lack of creativity, and a waste of a perfectly good cast.

A few weeks ago we posted the first official image from director Jamie Linden ‘s Ten Year when the film got announced as part of this year’s Toronto Film Festival. Now, thanks to Voltage Pictures website, we’ve got a number of new images and the first poster. Starring Channing Tatum, Ron Livingston, Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Chris Pratt, Kate Mara, Lynn Collins and Oscar Isaac, Ten Year is about a group of friends returning home for their ten year high school reunion. Hit the jump for more. [Update: We've removed the posters at the request of the studio.]

Continuing our assault of all the new movie images that hit the net this morning, we’ve got our first official looks at Steve McQueen’s Shame (starring Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale and Nicole Beharie), Fernando Meirelles 360 (starring Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz and Ben Foster), Jamie Linden’s Ten Year (starring Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Justin Long, Kate Mara, Anthony Mackie and Chris Pratt) and Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut Coriolanus (which stars Fiennes and Gerard Butler).
While many Film Festivals hope to land a few big movies, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is an insane lineup that’s loaded with huge actors and high profile projects. Like the past few years, I’ll be at TIFF, so you can expect plenty of reviews/interviews during the Festival which runs from September 8-18th. Hit the jump to check out all the new images.

Ironclad is a prime example of a thrilling adventure film that is hampered by the modern chaotic editing of its action scenes. Set in the 13th century, the movie follows a dedicated Templar (James Purefoy) that bands together with the local barons to defend Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John of England (Paul Giamatti). While the plotline of a few against many doesn’t break new ground, the brutal action scenes, excellent cast, and unfamiliar outcome keep the film from feeling tied to conventions. Even the dialog has its moments that show co-writer/director John English is a rising star, if only he could get the camerawork under control. Hit the jump for my full review.

The main character of 127 Hours, Aron Ralston, is a real person and the film is based on his experience of being pinned to a cliff for a period of time that should be self-evident. As such – with a clock and an unavoidable ending – any film based on this event is bound to be something of an exercise. That’s not a knock against the movie – it’s just that what’s going to happen is predetermined by one’s knowledge of the events. Much like Into the Wild or Milk, I guess an audience could not know where the narrative is going, but that’s not the point with these movies. For director Danny Boyle, it was his follow up to his Academy award winning picture Slumdog Millionaire. For James Franco – who stars as Ralston – it a chance to show that he could carry a movie by himself, which led to an Oscar nomination. And for the audience it’s an interesting, but ultimately unsatisfying meditation on one character coming to terms with his life. My review of 127 Hours on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The comedy Happythankyoumoreplease follows the lives of a group of 20-something New Yorkers struggling to not only figure out themselves, but navigate their lives and loves. Actress Kate Mara plays Mississippi, an aspiring singer who is currently working as a waitress. She meets aspiring novelist Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor) and, as the two explore their attraction to each other, she tests his fear of commitment by wanting him to open his heart to her.
At the film’s press day, actress Kate Mara did this exclusive interview with Collider to talk about how she got involved with the film, getting to showcase her singing talent, working with Josh Radnor and trusting him as a first-time director, what initially interested her in acting, and how she and her sister, Rooney Mara, would love to do a project together someday. She also talked about her upcoming roles in the medieval period piece Ironclad and the ensemble drama Ten Year. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

We have a couple of quick casting stories for you this morning. First up, Jimmi Simpson (Date Night) has joined the cast of Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter . Variety reports that Simpson will be playing Lincoln’s right-hand man. While I’m sure he’ll do a fine job assisting Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) in his political/vampire-slaying duties, I’ll continue to struggle seeing Simpson as anyone other than the creepy McPoyle brother he plays on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter also stars Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Shooting is expected to begin next month. The film is due out in 3D on June 22, 2012. Hit the jump for news on Kate Mara and Treat Williams joining Blackbird.

The trailer for director Barry Blaustein’s Peep World has gone online. The comedy premiered at the Toronto International Film Fesival last year, where it was picked up by IFC Films. The film boasts an impressive cast that includes Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson, Sarah Silverman, Ben Schwartz, Taraji P. Henson, Judy Greer, Kate Mara and Stephen Tobolowsky. It centers on four siblings who come together for their father’s 70th birthday following the publication of a novel written by the youngest sibling that exposes all of the family’s secrets. Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself.

One of the many films that premiered at last year’s Sundance Film festival was writer/director Josh Radnor’s happythankyoumoreplease. While many might have thought Radnor only got into Sundance due to his CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, his film won the Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance last night, proving he belonged at the Festival.
Starring Radnor, Malin Akerman, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Tony Hale, and Pablo Schreiber, happythankyoumoreplease is about six New Yorkers juggling love and friendship. Even though the story is nothing new in the world of movies, I really enjoyed Radnor’s debut film. Also, while many Sundance movies are tough to watch, happythankyoumoreplease is a really sweet romcom that’s sure to please audiences looking for an uplifting movie about love.
With the film getting released March 4, a new poster and the first trailer have been released. Hit the jump to check them out. You can also watch my video interview with Malin Akerman and Josh Radnor here. It was recorded at last year’s Sundance.

Apparently acting just wasn’t enough for Channing Tatum: his producing career is marching onward with screenwriter Jamie Linden’s (We Are Marshall, Dear John) directorial debut getting traction. Deadline has posted a director’s test done for the film, titled Ten Year, which the pair is shopping around Hollywood for financing. As we previously reported, the film is an ensemble drama that centers on a group of friends who reunite a decade after their high school graduation.
The director’s test stars Tatum, Kate Mara (Shooter, the upcoming 127 Hours), Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), and Haylie Duff. Anna Faris, Justin Long, and Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) are also circling roles in the project. For more on the film and to view the short itself, hit the jump.

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer and poster for Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. The film has been picking up highly-positive buzz on the festival circuit. While the first trailer for the movie barely noted that protagonist Aron Ralston (played by James Franco) became trapped under a boulder while mountain climbing, this new trailer spends its second-half showing his desperation. Franco looks tremendous and I’m now even more excited to see this film.
Hit the jump to check out the new trailer and poster. 127 Hours co-stars Amber Tamblyn, Kate Mara, and Clemence Poesy. It opens November 5th.

The first clip from Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours has gone online. The film is about real-life mountaineer Aron Ralston who was forced to amputate his own arm after he became trapped under a boulder. You won’t see that in this clip. This clip is of a much happier time with Ralston (played by James Franco) swimming with two fellow climbers (played by Kata Mara and Amber Tamblyn). Basically, there’s no need to worry about spoilers with this clip because they’re clearly holding on to the more intense stuff for later (although I’m pretty sure you can’t put footage of a dude cutting off his own arm with a pocket knife into an all-audiences approved trailer, so that’s probably safe from marketing).
Hit the jump to check out the clip. 127 Hours has been receiving highly positive notices as it travels the festival circuit. It’s currently playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and it will close out the London Film Festival. It’s set to open domestically on November 5th.

Malin Akerman, Forest Whitaker, Kate Mara, and Bruce Willis are set to star in Aaron Harvey’s indie crime drama Catch .44. Per Variety, the
“The story focuses on three women — led by Akerman’s character — being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman (Whitaker), a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook. Willis will play the head crime boss, the mastermind behind everything that happens.”
While I’m reluctant to see Whitaker play yet another psychopath (he has more range than that), he’s a fantastic actor and this is a strong cast. It’s also got an intriguing premise so I’m gonna keep this flick on my radar.
