The 2012 Screen Actors Guild Award winners were announced tonight, and The Help took home the top film prize, “Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture”.  The drama also took home awards for Best Actress (Viola Davis) and Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer).  If you think that’s no big deal in terms of affecting the Oscar race, I have one word for you: Crash.  Granted, The Help didn’t even pick up an Oscar nomination for Best Director, but actors make up the largest block of Academy voters (25 percent).  And as we’ve seen, actors really like movies that make us think we’ve defeated racism, which we totally have.  That’s why all African-American actors pull in huge salaries.  Actors like Will Smith and…Will Smith.  I wouldn’t put The Help ahead of The Artist just yet, but Davis and Spencer should now be considered serious contenders in their respective catagories (Spencer is almost at a lock at this point).

Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener Join Charlie Kaufman’s FRANK OR FRANCIS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 26th, 2012 at 10:08 am

Charlie Kaufman’s new film Frank or Francis is shaping up to be one of the most incredibly strange/amazing moviegoing experiences of recent years, and the Adaptation. scribe has tapped two Academy Award nominees to join the cast. The plot concerns a director (Steve Carell) who becomes obsessed with a message board commenter (Jack Black) trashing his movies on a Hollywood website. Nicolas Cage stars as a washed-up actor and Kevin Kline plays dual roles as the director of the highest grossing film of all time and an animatronic head that helps create a machine that develops a completely inoffensive product with the broadest possible appeal. Oh, and it’s a musical.

Now Vulture reports that Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener are poised to join the impressive cast. Winslet and Keener are no stranger to Kaufman scripts, as they starred in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, respectively. Kaufman is directing his own script with Frank or Francis, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the finished product.

I’ve just spent the past three hours watching and live-blogging the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.  My brain feels mushy.  After the jump and presented without comment is a list of this year’s winners. If you don’t even want to hit the jump, The Artist and The Descendants won Best Comedy/Musical and Best Drama, respectively.  If you want to awards prognosticate, I’ll save you the trouble: both were nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.  Those nominations haven’t been announced yet, but they were nominated.  Trust me.  I’m a professional.

Also, feel free to sound off on the winners and losers.  Lord knows I’ve been doing it for the past three hours.

CONTAGION Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: January 14th, 2012 at 6:00 am

You never know what you’re going to get with Steven Soderbergh. He’s a chameleon, someone just as happy to do a project that cost ten dollars as a hundred million. And he likes to work. Even though he’s mentioned retirement, Contagion came out in September theatrically, and four months later his Haywire is coming out. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Ehle in what amounts to a disaster film about a new virus that starts a pandemic. It may also be the best disaster film ever made. Our review of Contagion on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Kate Winslet to Star in Kenneth Branagh’s Adaptation of THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 13th, 2012 at 6:45 am

Kate Winslet is set to star in Kenneth Branagh‘s adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.  Based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows, Winslet “will play writer Juliet Ashton, who penned columns for a magazine during World War II. After the war, she is contacted by Channel Islander Dawsey Adams and, as their correspondence continues, the story unfolds of how a book society was established on Nazi-occupied Guernsey to fool curfew patrols.”  According to Daily Mail, filming is set to begin in mid-March.

Winslet continues to impress as an actress and she recently turned in a devilishly comic performance in Roman Polanski‘s Carnage.  2012 is starting off as a bit of time warp for Winslet since she previously starred in Branagh’s 1996 adaptation of Hamlet, and she’ll next be seen in theaters in James Cameron‘s 3D-post-coverted version of Titanic.

First Trailer for James Cameron’s TITANIC 3D

Paramount has released a trailer for James Cameron’s 3D update of his 1997 film Titantic.  I think the verdict is in on this movie, and since the trailer is on my computer, I can’t really comment on the 3D.  However, I was reminded of how much I hate “My Heart Will Go On.”  Click here for what Steve though of the footage he saw last month.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Jonathan Hyde, Victor Garber, Bernard Hill, David Warner, Gloria Stuart, and Bill Paxton.  Titanic opens in 3D on April 6, 2012.  It will also be re-released in 2D.

New Posters for THE MUPPETS, YOUNG ADULT, and TITANTIC 3D

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 15th, 2011 at 12:05 pm

New posters have been released for The Muppets, Jason Reitman‘s Young Adult, and James Cameron‘s 3D re-release of TitanicThe Muppets ads continue to parody other 2011 movies and this time the target is The Twilight Saga.  If Taylor Lautner was replaced by Rowlf, it would be a dramatic improvement for the series.  The new poster for Young Adult doesn’t hold a candle to the excellent teaser poster, but it does make Charlize Theron look almost as horrifying as she was in Monster.  Finally, I’m not sure why Paramount felt the need to bury Kate Winslet‘s face in Leonardo DiCaprio‘s chest.  The poster is also sorely lacking a sad Billy Zane in the background.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Muppets opens November 23rd.  Young Adult opens in limited release on December 9th before going wide on December 16th.  Titantic opens in 2D and 3D on April 6, 2012.

New Posters for CARNAGE, THE DARKEST HOUR, and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 3D

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

We’ve got a few new posters to share with you today. First up is a truly terrible one sheet for Roman Polanski’s comedy Carnage. The film itself doesn’t look bad at all—with a stellar cast made up of Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, and John C. Reilly—but this poster makes the film look like Hallmark’s Movie of the Week. We’ve also got a warm and fuzzy holiday-themed poster for the alien invasion pic The Darkest Hour. The film stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Mighella, and Joel Kinnaman, and features aliens that are “creatures of electricity and electromagnetism” rather than scaly, insect-looking things like every other sci-fi movie these days.

Last but not least is a nostalgia-inducing poster for the 3D re-release of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. As we previously reported, Disney is re-releasing a number of animated films theatrically in 3D after the smashing success of The Lion King. Carnage opens December 16th, The Darkest Hour arrives December 25th, and Beauty and the Beast 3D returns January 13th. Hit the jump for the posters.

New Clip from Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE

A new clip from Roman Polanski’s comedy Carnage has been released. Based on the play God of Carnage, the film tells the story of two sets of parents who meet to settle a dispute between their children. The cast is spectacular—Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster, and John C. Reilly—and this is Polanski’s first foray into comedy. This clip centers on the parents getting to the crux of their meeting, as they’re hashing out why their children were fighting in the first place. Reilly is great here as he keeps getting sidetracked by bragging about a fight he had when he was a kid, and Foster keeps trying to reign him back in. I’m really looking forward to seeing the interplay between the quartet of actors when the film hits theaters.

Hit the jump to watch the clip. Carnage opens on December 16th.

New Trailer for Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE

A new trailer for Roman Polanski’s Carnage has gone online. Based on Yasmina Reza’s play God of Carnage, the story takes place entirely in one house and revolves around two sets of parents who sit down to discuss a dispute between their children. The phenomenal cast is comprised of Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, and Christoph Waltz. This trailer gives us a sense of the slow-building tension that no doubt drives the film. None of the jokes really stand out, and Waltz seems a bit one-note, but I’m assuming it’s hard to get a sense of the comedy from a trailer for a film that plays out in real-time. However, Reilly certainly seems like a stand-out amongst the immensely talented cast. Given the outstanding ensemble and Polanski’s involvement, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the finished film.

First Clip from Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE

While Roman Polanski’s Carnage received mixed-to-positive reviews after its premiere in Venice, it’s still a Polanski film that stars Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly, and Kate Winslet, so we’re all going to see it, especially because it’s Polanski doing a comedy.  The story revolves around two sets of parents who come together to discuss a schoolyard fight between their kids.  The first clip from the film has landed online and I don’t see what’s so bad about the movie.  In the scene, Reilly is tremendously proud that his kid is the leader of a gang and then he and Waltz bond over being gang-leaders back in their day while Foster seems bewildered and unimpressed with Reilly’s celebration of his schoolyard victories of yesteryear.  Of course, this is one scene of many and I’m curious to find out how the whole film comes together

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  Carnage will play at this year’s New York Film Festival and hit theaters on December 16th.

CONTAGION Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 8th, 2011 at 9:19 pm

In Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, the Center for Disease Control’s Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) is asked by a deputy from the Department of Homeland Security (Enrico Colantoni) if the growing pandemic could be a terrorist attack.  “There’s no need to weaponize the bird flu,” Cheever calmly responds.  “The birds are doing that.”  Similarly, Soderbergh knows there’s no need to sensationalize a pandemic.  The pandemic is already terrifying on its own.  By realistically depicting the response to the rampant spread of an unknown virus, Soderbergh makes us feel the intensity and the helplessness of the situation.  But in attempting to capture as many sides of the story as possible, some characters become one-dimensional, plotlines fizzle out, and unintentional xenophobia overshadows the intended misophobia.
