New Trailer for REAL STEEL Starring Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman Real Steel movie image slice

DreamWorks has released a new trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as a washed-up boxer who reconnects with his estranged son (Dakota Goyo, who played Lil’ Thor in Thor) as they build and train a fighting robot to fight in the World Robot Boxing championship.  I’m trying to cast aside cynicism on this project, but I can’t get past Levy.  His films tend to be lowest common denominator family fare and judging by this trailer, it doesn’t look like Real Steel is going to break that trend.  It looks too saccharine to be fun and too silly to be taken seriously.  Hopefully I’m wrong and I’ll finally like one of the guy’s films because he’s certainly not going away anytime soon. It’s worth mentioning that Steven Spielberg was heavily involved in the project and fought to keep the project at DreamWorks when the studio broke away from Paramount.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Click here to check out Steve’s visit to the editing bay.  He thinks the film is going to be good.  Based on what I’ve seen (and granted, he’s seen more of the movie than I have), I beg to differ. Real Steel also stars Anthony Mackie, Hope Davis, Kevin Durand, and Evangeline Lilly.  The film opens October 7th.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) has joined the cast of David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis. The film stars Robert Pattinson as a newlywed billionaire who loses his his entire fortune (not to mention his blushing new bride) over the course of one really bad day. Variety reports that Durand will play Pattinson’s chief security officer. Next up, Scream 4 star Nico Tortorella is in talks to join Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy) adaptation of Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas as the villain. The story centers on a short-order cook who can commune with the dead. Anton Yelchin is set to play the protagonist, with Willem Dafoe poised to play the local police chief who is in on the cook’s secret. Heat Vision reports that Tortorella would play an officer under Dafoe’s character who is secretly “a member of a Satanic cult bent on destroying the town.” Addison Timlin is poised to play Yelchin’s girlfriend. Kevin Durand Exclusive Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR

In the action thriller I Am Number Four, directed by D.J. Caruso and currently in theaters, actor Kevin Durand plays the imposing commander of the Mogadorian army that is in pursuit of the nine Lorien teenagers who have escaped their own planet with their guardians and come to Earth. It is his job to track them down and eradicate them, one by one, wherever they are hiding.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Kevin Durand talked about getting offered this unusual role, developing the character into something more multi-dimensional and playful, learning the complicated Mogadorian language, and trying to keep his make-up from melting off during a Florida summer. He also talked about his role opposite Hugh Jackman in the upcoming action drama Real Steel, opening in November. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

I AM NUMBER FOUR Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 18th, 2011 at 7:42 am

If you wanted to make Twilight but without the personality, you would have a film akin to the cynical cash-grab that is I Am Number Four.  Sure, Twilight‘s personality is creepy and misogynistic, but it’s genuinely offering something to a particular audience even though I find that “thing” (idolization of possessive stalkers) repulsive.  I Am Number Four, on the other hand, is a vapid shell of a presumptuous franchise.  The film never bothers to establish compelling characters or compelling situations.  Every time I Am Number Four could do something interesting or inventive, it scurries away to the most predictable, bland solution it can find.  There’s nothing redeeming about I Am Number Four, from the script, to the action, to the visuals, to the performances, to presumably the craft services.  It rarely even shows the courtesy to be laughably bad.  It simply carries on and on and on and assumes the audience is enraptured in the adventures of dull, attractive teenagers.

Callan McAuliffe Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 17th, 2011 at 7:03 am

If you’ve been reading Collider over the last year, you know we’ve been covering director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four since the project was still being put together.  Starring Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe, the suspense-thriller centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer showed you with some cool images, the full trailer does a great job at explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers.

Anyway, DreamWorks recently held a long lead press day and I got to participate in a roundtable interview with McAuliffe. In the film, he plays a close friend of Pettyfer.  During the interview he talked about his character, how almost everyone cast in the film has an accent, how he got into acting, his last movie Flipped, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to what he had to say.  I Am Number Four gets released February 18.

First Trailer for Shawn Levy’s REAL STEEL

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 9th, 2010 at 10:08 am

Hugh Jackman Real Steel movie image slice

The first trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel has leaked onto the net and you can check it out after the jump.  Originally the trailer was going to premiere on ESPN tonight, but as is often the case, it leaked early.  As you might have just seen, I visited the editing room of Real Steel earlier this week and saw about ten minutes of the film and interviewed Levy.  I learned that none of the effects in the teaser are final, and the footage you’re about to watch only skims the surface in terms of story and what the movie is about.

I’ll be honest, I think the teaser is decent, but not a home-run.  I say this because after watching ten minutes of footage, there is a lot more to Real Steel than what’s in this teaser and I really think this film is going to surprise audiences when it gets released in October, 2011.  Hit the jump to check it out for yourself and make sure to read my edit bay visit!

REAL STEEL Edit Bay Visit; Steve Watches 10 Minutes of Footage and Interviews Director Shawn Levy

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 9th, 2010 at 9:46 am

When I first heard that director Shawn Levy was making a robot boxing movie, I’ll admit to thinking it sounded like a really stupid idea.  After all, the guy who made Pink Panther and the Night at the Museum movies taking on robot boxing?  Um…no thanks. But after sitting in the editing room the other day with Levy and having him show me (along with a few other reporters) about ten minutes of the movie, consider me ready to enter the ring to fight alongside Hugh Jackman.

While I’ll explain what the movie is about and have a lot more details about what I learned after the jump, I want to immediately talk about something that absolutely floored me during the presentation.

Like all of you, when I watch a movie, I can tell when an effect is done by computers and when it’s real.  Meaning, when it’s been done practically.  However, for the first time in my life, I saw some footage that made me lose track of what was real and what was created in a computer.  I had to pick my jaw off the floor after watching it.  And Levy told us it was only 80% completed.  Hit the jump for more:

I AM NUMBER FOUR Edit Bay Visit; Steve Watches 20 Minutes of Footage and Also Interviews Director D.J. Caruso

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 8th, 2010 at 3:14 pm

With director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four almost finished, DreamWorks invited a few online reporters to visit the editing room to check out about twenty minutes of footage and also talk with Caruso.  Since we’ve been covering the movie since its inception, you know the film stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe and the plot centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer showed you with some cool images, the just released full trailer does a great job explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers.

Anyway, in the editing room Caruso showed us the opening ten minutes, a few scenes towards the middle, and then he showed us some of the awesome action in the 3rd act.  Hit the jump for a more detailed description including an interview with Caruso:

Teresa Palmer Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR; Plus Updates on TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT and Kieran Darcy-Smith’s SAY NOTHING

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 7th, 2010 at 10:53 am

While moviegoers have seen a lot of Teresa Palmer over the past few years in films such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Bedtime Stories, for her upcoming sci-fi action thriller I Am Number Four, we’re going to see a new side: action star.  That’s because in director D.J. Caruso’s upcoming movie (produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay), Palmer plays a mysterious outsider who eventually kicks some serious ass on screen.

A few months ago I got to visit the set of I Am Number Four while the production was shooting in Pittsburgh (read about it here).  On set I was able to do a roundtable interview with Palmer (click here to read) where she talked about the challenges of getting ready to film all the action and she also revealed who she plays in the movie and why it’s a cool part.  But with the new trailer getting released, DreamWorks recently held a long lead press day and I got to sit down with Palmer again to talk about the film.  While she covered some of the same subjects in the recent interview, she also talked about seeing some finished footage and her thoughts, the training, some of the cool stuff she got to do and how challenging it was to perform, and she gave some updates on Take Me Home Tonight (her film with Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler) and revealed she’s about to start filming a movie for director Kieran Darcy-Smith called Say Nothing - which will also star Joel Edgerton.  More after the jump:

First Full Trailer for D.J Caruso’s Sci-Fi Action Thriller I AM NUMBER FOUR

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 7th, 2010 at 9:42 am

DreamWorks has released the first full trailer for director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four and you can check it out after the jump. The film stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe and the plot centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  While the first teaser trailer teased you with some cool images, the full trailer does a really good job explaining the story and introducing us to the characters and their special powers. If I Am Number Four wasn’t on your radar, this trailer might change that.

But before getting to the trailer, I got to check out about 20 minutes of the film yesterday at DreamWorks and later tonight you can expect a full report on what I saw with some quotes from director D.J. Caruso. They showed us the opening 5 or 10 minutes and then a bunch of the action from the 3rd act.  It looked really cool. More tonight.

DreamWorks has released another poster for director D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four and you can check it out after the jump.  This is on top of the one they released a few days ago.  As I said last time…the film stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, and Callan McAuliffe and the plot centers on nine aliens who escaped the destruction of their planet and landed on Earth, but are now on the run from those who destroyed their home world.  Alex Pettyfer plays number four and he’s the next one being targeted for death.  Here’s a link to all our previous coverage which includes a set visit, on set interviews, and a lot more info on the movie.
