If smashing the opening weekend record by nearly $40 million wasn’t enough to convince you that The Avengers is a juggernaut hit, surely the film crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide in a mere 19 days sealed the deal. Naturally, all eyes are now on what Marvel Studios has coming up. Iron Man 3 begins production later this month, and we know that Thor 2 is set to shoot later this year followed by Captain America 2. Obviously The Avengers 2 will be coming down the line at some point, but I’d imagine the earliest we could see it in theaters would be 2015. There’s a May 2014 release date slotted for a currently unannounced Marvel pic, but Marvel Studios president recently revealed that there are actually two unnamed films currently in development. Hit the jump for more.

In case anyone was worried that Disney and Marvel wouldn’t make a sequel to the film with the highest opening weekend gross of all-time (by far, I might add), Disney CEO Bob Iger is here to alleviate your concerns. Per Deadline, Iger announced that the studio is developing a sequel to The Avengers, adding that the film’s success “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.” Anyone who sat through the film’s credits should have a good idea of where The Avengers 2 could go villain-wise, but I think the key to a follow-up will be the return of Joss Whedon as writer/director. He is the reason The Avengers is a good film as opposed to simply an expensive film, and his recipe of humor, character development, and pure entertainment made for one of the most enjoyable moviegoing experiences in a long time. Hit the jump for more.
[Update: It appears Iger's quote was taken out of context, and he actually said that there will "hopefully" be another Avengers. Nevertheless, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point. More after the jump.]

With this morning’s announcement that The Avengers scored a $207.1 million opening weekend—$6 million higher than yesterday’s estimate—Marvel’s superhero team-up pic now holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend in history by nearly $40 million. Given the massive box office take, I’m assuming most (if not all) of you reading this story saw the film at least once this weekend. Just to be safe I’m keeping things spoiler-free here on the frontpage, but needless to say a certain character popped up in a mid-credits scene.
Writer/director Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently talked about how that scene came to fruition and whose idea it was. Hit the jump to see what they had to say. Obviously, SPOILERS for The Avengers follow after the jump.

It’s officially Avengers week, and fans aplenty are counting down the hours until the midnight reveal of Joss Whedon’s superhero team-up pic on Thursday/Friday at midnight. Not only is this the first time fans get to see all their favorite Marvel superheroes come together onscreen, but we’ll get our first look at Mark Ruffalo’s iteration of the Hulk. Early word on the film has had many singling out Ruffalo’s performance, and the Hulk character in general, as one of the highlights of the film.
Most critics and fans have been singing high praises of Whedon’s take on the character, yet when Steve asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige if a new standalone Hulk movie was in the cards, Feige claimed there were no plans at the moment. However, it appears the overwhelmingly positive reaction may have convinced Marvel to change their tune, because another studio exec recently said we might see a standalone Hulk flick as soon as 2015. Hit the jump for more.

The release of The Avengers is now only a week away, but Marvel and Co. are already busy prepping for the beginning of production on Iron Man 3 later next month. It’s no secret that much of the first Iron Man’s success is due to the charisma and talent of lead actor Robert Downey Jr., but as these things go, Downey most likely won’t be donning the suit for Iron Man 9. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently addressed the issue of what the studio would do should Downey decide to bow out of the role in the near future. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

With less than a month before May 4 release date, the cast of The Avengers shot an additional scene last week. That was probably never meant to be public information, but nobody other than Robert Downey Jr. has any control over what RDJ decides to announce at press conferences. Marvel president Kevin Feige downplayed the importance of the additional shooting at the European premiere:
“I will tell you this: It was not a scene. It was not a scene. There’s little things. It’s been blown out of proportion. Which is fun, I like that things are blown out of proportion. Sometimes they’re true sometimes they’re not.” [Blogomatic 3000]
Okay, so it was not “a scene.” But it was something that they couldn’t shoot with body doubles. The myth of what happened that night is almost certainly better than the truth, so maybe it’s best we keep the mystery box shut. As always, Feige is a wealth of information on all things Marvel, so hit the jump for his recent comments on the status of Ant-Man and who owns the rights to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Iron Man 3 has been selected as one of the twenty-five U.S. films to be released in China, and the movie will be co-financed by Chinese production company DMG Entertainment. In a nutshell, this deal is good for Marvel because: A) It means the production will probably have more money; B) DMG Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company China will be distributing the movie in China, which is a huge audience and therefore huge profits; C) It makes inroads with Chinese audiences for future Marvel movies. Since China only wants tentpole movies, and they tend to want them in 3D, this deal pretty much confirms that Iron Man 3 will either be shot or post-converted into 3D, which will most likely in no way improve the movie. The press release also mention that some of Iron Man 3 will be shot in China in late summer 2012.
Hit the jump for the press release and a recap of what Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ President of Production, had to say about Iron Man 3 and other upcoming Marvel releases. Iron Man 3 is due out in the U.S. on May 3, 2013.

With no question, Marvel’s The Avengers is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, bringing together such iconic superheroes as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), all under the auspices of S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), in order to defeat an unexpected enemy (Tom Hiddleston) threatening to destroy the universe.
At the film’s press day, co-stars Downey, Hemsworth, Evans, Ruffalo and Jackson were joined by producer and President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige to talk about their most memorable moments during filming, the challenges of uniting all these characters together, what they like best about their characters, how much fun they had with the comedy, and what made Joss Whedon the right man for the director’s job. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

With Marvel and Disney’s The Avengers opening around the world in the coming weeks, last night was the world premiere in Hollywood and it was also the first time members of the press were shown the film. As you may have already read on my Twitter feed, I loved it and think Joss Whedon delivered a movie that both fans and casual moviegoers are going to love. Also, it’s really funny and it has the best action of any Marvel movie thus far.
Anyway, just an hour ago I got to sit down with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Since I already posted an in depth conversation with him when I visited the set of The Avengers last year, I decided to use my limited time to discuss Marvel’s future projects like Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, the Avengers sequel and whether Joss Whedon is signed to come back, what movies are coming in 2014 and 2015, Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, if Marvel is making an animated movie, another Hulk movie, and so much more. I feel compelled this week to use the Top 5 opening paragraph to ask our readers a moderately sized favor: if you have any interest whatsoever in the American horror genre and its future, please do your best to find a way to catch The Cabin in the Woods in theaters when it officially opens next weekend. I’m not asking this as a way of manufacturing some hyperbolic scenario in which the success or failure of said film will literally make or break the genre as we know it. Rather, I’m hoping to use it as a reminder that opening weekend box office dollars are one of the best ways that a moviegoer can have his/her voice heard by the film industry’s powers that be. If you’re tired of remakes of remakes and reboots of those remakes, then do your best to financially support something that isn’t afraid to turn genre conventions on their respective heads. Now, all favors aside…
Waiting on the other side of the Top 5 jump this week is a recap of our visit to the set of The Avengers, the first Total Recall trailer, video interviews with the cast of American Reunion, the first trailer/images from Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted, and a batch of new images from Prometheus. You know the drill, a brief recap and link to each of the above awaits…

Clark Gregg can now cross two things off of his list: turning 50 and being featured on a character poster for Marvel’s The Avengers. As Gregg celebrated his 50th birthday today, he marked the occasion by debuting a character poster featuring his own Agent Coulson alongside Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will feature pretty heavily in the upcoming superhero mash-up.
Steve was able to land an interview with Gregg on a recent set visit, which you can read here. We’ve also got interviews with director Joss Whedon, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and stars Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, and Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. Get caught up with all of our previous coverage on The Avengers here before the film opens on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the new character poster.

As the President of Production at Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige knows a thing or two about how The Avengers movie came together and the history of the project. Thankfully, when I was on set last June with a few other reporters, Feige was more than willing to answer any and all of our numerous questions. During the extended interview, Feige talked about the plot, how the film will impact other Marvel movies, if they were able to do things in The Avengers that they couldn’t do in other Marvel movies, his thoughts on 3D, how being bought by Disney has affected the way they make movies, Easter Eggs, the action set pieces, the updated costumes, new Iron Man armor, and so much more it’s impossible to sum it all up. Trust me, if you’re a fan of Marvel movies, you’re going to enjoy this interview. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

In order to build a film like The Avengers, Marvel had to look far in advance and make sure that their major superhero films contributed to the upcoming blockbuster crossover. Even if The Avengers is a massive flop (and that’s highly unlikely), Marvel is already making its plans for The Avengers 2. Speaking at New York Comic-Con this weekend, Marvel Studios’ President of Production Kevin Feige talked about the company’s future films. Unsurprisingly, Iron Man 3 will be part of what Feige calls “Phase Two of this Avengers Assemble talk.”
So what else will be part of “Phase Two”? Hit the jump for more. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012. Feige says they’ll be continuing their tradition of including a brief scene post-credits [via Cinemablend].

Are you attending this year’s New York Comic-Con? Were you planning on going to the presentation for The Avengers? If so, then everything’s gonna be fine. Marvel has announced they’ll be showing never-before-seen footage from the movie at NYCC’s IGN Theater on October 15th from 6:30 – 7:30pm. The panel for the event will feature producer Kevin Feige, and stars Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, and Cobie Smulders. I expect everyone who is attending the presentation to studiously take notes and tweet your every thought. I also expect we’re going to get a teaser trailer for the film within a month, but that’s brazen speculation on my part. Brazen, I tell you.
Hit the jump for the press release. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

While Marvel has been pretty upfront about their slate of films in the past, giving audiences a long lead-in to the far off films like Thor and Captain America, their next slate of movies after The Avengers has been much more quiet. Now it looks like the cat’s been let out of the bag, as Marvel’s next five movies after their all-star superhero flick includes: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Inhumans. We knew about Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, as they both had release dates, and Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man had been up in the air for a while, but the other two are relatively new additions.
