TV fans without Netflix worried that you wouldn’t be able to see forthcoming drama series House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey with David Fincher in the director’s chair for the pilot have some good news today. Though Netflix will air the new series exclusively at first, Variety has word that Sony Pictures Television has finalized a deal with Media Rights Capital to distribute the seris after Netflix’s window on the series expires. It’s not clear how soon episodes will air after they premiere on Netflix, but at least those who are still stubbornly not subscribing to the service will have a chance to see House of Cards at some point. More after the jump.

The 2008 economic collapse is one of the major events of our lifetimes and some filmmakers have rushed to turn the events into A Very Serious and Important Movie. J.C. Chandor’s Margin Call would like to be that movie. It dresses up its respected cast in fine suits, puts them in the financial world, and then has them look at computer monitors and say “Fuck me…” in astonishment about 80-90 times throughout the course of the film. Chandor wants to bury the audience in the world of financial intrigue and corruption without doing the hard work of explaining the machinations of that world in any kind of detail. He gets away with it for the first half-hour as the audience becomes wrapped in a propulsive, plot-driven drama, but by the end the only saving grace is Kevin Spacey playing against type.

2011’s summer season was marked by the number of R-rated comedies it had, and the number of successful ones. Basically, it takes two years for the heat of one project to generate more of the same and you could say 2011 comedy summer this was all due to 2009’s The Hangover. This year saw Bridesmaids, The Hangover Part II, Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher, Friends With Benefits, The Change Up and 30 Minutes or Less. And in that you can see that the start launched some really successful films, but by the end of summer audiences became bored of these films. Hit overload. Horrible Bosses made over $100 Million and did so because of a great premise. Three guys (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudekis) hate the people they work for (Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell) and so they plot to kill them. Our review of the Blu-ray release of Horrible Bosses follows after the jump.

A promotional onslaught is in effect for director Trent Cooper’s comedy Father of Invention as a new trailer, poster, and a slew of new images from the film have gone online. Starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Craig Robinson, Virginia Madsen, Johnny Knoxville, John Stamos, and Camilla Belle, the film centers on a former infomercial guru (Spacey) who finds himself in prison after a design flaw in one of his inventions de-fingers many of his customers. From there, Father of Invention looks to document Spacey’s attempted return to “As Seen on TV” glory.
The pic looks a little formulaic in its “Guy A is a bad person who must first learn how to change himself before he can really make any sort of difference” approach. Nevertheless, the cast is great and when compared to Cooper’s last directorial effort, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, I’m sure Father of Invention is awards-season material. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, images, and an official synopsis for the film. Father of Invention opens on October 14th.

The first trailer for the financial thriller Margin Call has been released. The film debuted at Sundance, and judging from the trailer it looks to be a fairly intense morality piece. The cast is great, and Steve caught the film at the festival and said it was really good. I like the tone here, and the idea of the film’s events playing out over a single day and night is definitely intriguing.
The story centers on the key people at an investment bank during the 24-hour period before the recent financial crisis. The cast includes Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Kevin Spacey. You can check out Steve’s interview with all of the above here and here. Margin Call opens October 21st. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

For an R-rated comedy, the humor doesn’t always have to be about shock value and gross-out gags (although those certainly don’t hurt). It can be about strong dialogue and fantastic performances and Seth Gordon’s Horrible Bosses manages exactly that. It’s the fourth major R-rated comedy to hit this summer and it may be the best one so far. While it lacks the warmth and maturity of Bridesmaids, it’s also a tighter, sharper narrative that keeps a laser-like focus on delivering non-stop jokes and never letting the plot stall. But more than its pacing, Horrible Bosses thrives because every actor is working at the top of their game. Leads Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis each maintain their own comic style but find a way to make those styles work in concert with each other. Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell relish playing the eponymous bosses with Farrell and especially Aniston getting to show audiences a new side of their acting talents. The result of the sharp writing, profanity-laden humor, and killer performances make Horrible Bosses one of the year’s most consistent comedies.

A red band trailer for Seth Gordon’s Horrible Bosses has been released. While the green band trailer has some good laughs, this trailer gives a better idea of how the film’s gonna play out. The jokes are spot-on, and every member of the fantastic cast is bringing their A-game. Whoever put Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis together is a genius. I can’t wait to finally see the whole film.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. And if you missed any of Steve’s coverage from the set, check out his interviews with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, director Seth Gordon and producer Jay Stern, as well as his full set visit report. Horrible Bosses also stars Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston and Jamie Foxx. The film opens July 8th.

With director Seth Gordon’s (The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters) comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8, Warner Bros. has provided us with six clips. As most of you know, the film has an all-star cast featuring Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jamie Foxx and it’s about a group of friends that decide to work together to kill their bosses.
While I haven’t seen the film, I’ve spoken to a few people that have and they’re all telling me it’s great. And after being on the set last year and laughing my ass off, I believe it. Hit the jump for the clips, and here’s my on set interviews with Day, Bateman and Sudeikis, Gordon, and producer Jay Stern.

Back in March we learned that the remake of the British miniseries House of Cards with a pilot directed by David Fincher would not end up at HBO or AMC, but rather the DVD mailing and streaming video service Netflix picked up the new seires. The growing company beat out the big cable networks for the promising series starring Kevin Spacey, and now another talent has just joined the mix. THR reports Robin Wright is in negotiations to take the lead female role in the new series which takes the British political drama and moves it to the United States. focused on a former Conservative Party chief of staff who follows a hungry politician who wants to be the new Prime Minister at the end of Margaret Thatcher’s term. It’s not clear what will be the focus of this new version in the US, but I’m guessing it will be something akin to The West Wing.
Anyway, the series is expected to begin production on the first 13 episodes of a 26-episode commitment in the spring of 2012, and Netflix will stream the series exclusively starting later that same year. It’ll be interesting to see how many of Netflix’s subscribers flock to the series, but with 20 million of them, I’m sure a decent number (myself among them) will be interested in a series with this kind of talent behind it.

I’m trying not to ruin the take from laughing. Thankfully, all the reporters on the Horrible Bosses set visit are also on the verge of losing their shit, so I think they won’t throw us all out if we mess it up. As I look around the converted TGI Friday’s in Woodland Hills, California, I realize the entire crew else is getting ready to burst, and it’s at this moment that I start to think director Seth Gordon’s movie might be awesome and a huge surprise.
But let me back up a second.
Late last summer I got to visit the set of Horrible Bosses. While Warner Bros. could have played it safe and released a boring PG-13 movie, I’m happy to report Horrible Bosses is a hard R and based on what I saw on set it’s going for the jugular in terms of raunchy comedy. For more on the film and what I saw and learned on set, hit the jump.

Last week, we reported that Paul Greengrass was considering three projects as his next film: the Somali pirate drama Maersk Alabama, the racing biopic Rush, and an unknown third project. Now it looks like Maersk Alabama is the frontrunner as Deadline reports that Sony has offered the film to Greengrass and talks are about to begin between the two parties. Deadline adds that the film won’t be an impediment to Greengrass’ delayed MLK assassination drama Memphis and that Maersk will likely be the director’s next film.
The story is based Captain Richard Phillips’ memoir A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea which recounts his three days as a Somali pirate hostage and the dramatic rescue from a team of Navy SEALs. Tom Hanks is attached to play Phillips; Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti, and Kevin Spacey are producing, and Billy Ray (State of Play) wrote the script. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the memoir.

It will be interest to see at summer’s end which R-rated comedy was the best. I certainly wouldn’t bet against Horrible Bosses, which boasts an outstanding cast featuring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudiekis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Jamie Foxx. The trailer was pretty damn good and while these posters are a bit bland, I’m happy whenever a poster for a comedy doesn’t simply use a white background.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Horrible Bosses opens July 8th.

The trailer for Horrible Bosses has gone online. Directed by Seth Gordon (Four Christmases) the movie centers on three hapless employees (played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) who conspire to kill each other’s horrible bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Aniston). While I’m eager to see what a red-band trailer might hold, there are plenty of good jokes in this green-band trailer. As usual, Bateman is terrific (his dry delivery at the end of the trailer is golden), but there doesn’t seem to be a weak link in the cast.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer as well as the teaser poster. The film also stars Jamie Foxx, Donald Sutherland, and Julie Bowen. Horrible Bosses opens July 8th.

What do you know about Jack Abramoff? Better yet, as a film geek, do you care about Jack Abramoff? Let’s say you don’t know who the hell Jack Abramoff is and don’t care to find out: is there anything about Casino Jack I can recommend that’ll get you interested in the movie? How about the inclusion of Kevin Spacey, turning in one of his funnier performances? What about…well, what about Kevin Spacey being funny? Not convinced? Then you might not care about seeing Casino Jack. Read on for the full-blown review after the jump, folks….

There are plenty of great-looking hard-R comedies headed our way this summer, but Horrible Bosses has a cast that makes it a serious contender for the best of the bunch. The film stars Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charile Day as a trio of hapless employees who agree to kill each others’ bosses played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Aniston, respectively. As if that cast wasn’t impressive enough, the film also stars Jamie Foxx (playing a character named “Motherfucker Jones”), Donald Sutherland, “Old Spice guy” Isaiah Mustafa, and Julie Bowen.
The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has some new images from the film and you can check them out after the jump along with a full plot synopsis. Horrible Bosses is due out July 8th. Click here for Steve’s recent interview with Bateman, Day, and Sudeikis.
