At a certain point, you have to guess that someone might make a movie just about the casting for Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming film Contagion. Bryan Cranston and Demetri Martin will join Jennifer Ehle and Elliott Gould as the latest additions to the virus thriller, according to The Playlist, and they will find their place among the already ridiculous cast. The quartet joins Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, John Hawkes, Chin Han, and Josie Ho. Meanwhile, we have some updates on the Gina Carano-centered espionage thriller previously titled Knockout and why Contagion won’t be filmed in 3D; join me after the break for full details.

According to The Playlist, Bill Paxton has now replaced Dennis Quaid in director Steven Soderbergh’s (Ocean’s Eleven, The Informant!) upcoming action-spy-thriller, Knockout. The film stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a black ops specialist who goes on the run once she’s been double crossed and framed by her own teammates. Quaid was going to be playing the role Carano’s father but had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming film Soul Surfer.
The Playlist also reports that French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz (Amelie) has also joined his cast, but his role in the film is still unknown. Kassovirz and Paxton will now join the pretty impressive ensemble cast which includes Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, and Michael Fassbender.
I love Dennis Quaid and he was great last time when he teamed up with Soderbergh on Traffic, but I really love me some Bill Paxton and it’s always great to see him on screen again. Knockout starts filming Monday in Dublin and the wait to see what Soderbergh has planned for this one shouldn’t be that long since the film is set to be released sometime later on this year.

According to The Playlist, director Steven Soderbergh, apparently having been swept off his feet by the Dear John trailer, has decided to flesh out his Knockout cast with professional non-emoter Channing Tatum. In case you missed our last story on this project, Knockout is a spy thriller that will star MMA figher Gina Carano as a member of a covert military squad who is double-crossed by someone on her team, leading her on a quest to uncover the guilty parties and, one would imagine, dole out lots of retaliatory ass-kicking. Tatum will have a small part as a member of Carano’s team that reaches out to her once she goes off the grid.
After casting the inexperienced and possibly awful Carano, Soderbergh balanced things out by surrounding her with a proven-to-be-awesome supporting cast, including Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, and Dennis Quaid. Obviously, the casting of Tatum throws things out of whack again, but the director is taking steps to remedy this, as, also per The Playlist, Antonio Banderas is close to joining the ensemble as the leader of a European black-ops squad.
Hit the jump for my thoughts on the casting, especially as far as Carano is concerned.

Back in September, it was announced that Gina Carano, best known for roughing up other females in women’s mixed martial arts and even being labeled “the face” of the sport, would get a shot at elevating her stardom by featuring in the upcoming Steven Soderbergh spy flick Knockout.
Today, The Playlist is reporting that sources close to the film have confirmed the cast surrounding Carano, and it is quite impressive. Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Dennis Quaid, and Michael Douglas will star alongside the rookie actress in a spy film that will likely turn some heads.
For the brand new plot, the rumor of a name change, and another high-profile actor being cast, hit the break.

From the exciting world of movie distribution deals comes news that the latest films from directors Steven Soderbergh and Antoine Fuqua will both find their audiences. Fuqua’s already completed “Brooklyn’s Finest” will go out via Overture after an earlier deal for domestic distribution fell through. Meanwhile Steven Soderbergh’s “Knockout”, which begins shooting next January, has caught the interest of Lionsgate, the proud studio behind this week’s number one film “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” More after the jump.

Right on the heels of his upcoming Matt Damon comedy “The Informant!”, director Steven Soderbergh has jumped onto a new project of a different sort. “Knockout” tells the story of a girl from the slums who is given a second chance at life in the ring, although it will be more akin to a James Bond film than “Million Dollar Baby”. Gina Carano of mixed martial arts fame is set to star. More on her and the project after the jump.
