Uma Thurman CEREMONY BEL AMI slice

Almost a year ago we posted the first images from Bel Ami.  However, since that time, news on the Robert Pattinson film has been rather quiet.

A brief refresher: slated for a 2011 release, Bel Ami follows Georges Duroy (Pattinson), a nineteenth-century French journalist who ascends Paris’ social ladder through a number of manipulative trists with talented and influential women. The film is based on Guy De Maupassant’s celebrated 1885 novel and will be helmed by noted theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod.  Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas co-star and, to the envy of Twifans the world over, be thoroughly taken advantage of by Pattinson. Thurman will play Duroy’s central paramour and ladder rung, Madeleine Forestier, while Thomas will play a socialite who is seduced by the suave, power-hungry protagonist.

This morning at the Ceremony press junket, I got to speak to Uma Thurman about who she plays in Bel Ami and has she seen the movie yet.  Hit the jump for her comments.

Mike Figgis to Direct SECONDS OF HAPPINESS; Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon Join Cast

Director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has stepped in to replace Neil LaBute in an adaptation of LaBute’s collection of short stories, Seconds of Happiness.  The frame of the narrative takes place on an airplane and examines the interconnecting lives of various passengers through vignettes.  Clearly, this will be just like LostDeadline also reports that Brendan Fraser and Kristen Scott Thomas will be joined by Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon.  Hendricks will play a woman who catches her husband (Fraser) in a “compromising position.”  Because I’ve never read LaBute’s book but have seen every episode of Lost, I imagine Fraser’s position has something to do with pushing a button every 108 minutes.  LaBute is still on board to produce and shooting is expected to begin this summer.

Hendricks recently signed on to star in the ensemble comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It while Dillon is attached to co-star in Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage and Matthew Weiner’s You Are Here.  Stiles recently co-starred on Showtime’s Dexter.   Hit the jump for the synopsis of Seconds of Pleasure.

Brendan Fraser and Kristen Scott Thomas to Star in Neil LaBute’s SECONDS OF PLEASURE; Colin Firth and Ed Harris May Co-Star

When he’s not starring in terrible family films, Brendan Fraser likes to spice things up with forgettable dramas.  Now that he’s not directing hyper-misogynistic movies, director Neil LaBute is content with disposable crap like Lakeview Terrace and the unnecessary remake of Death at a Funeral.  Now the two are teaming up for Seconds of Pleasure, a drama most likely based on LaBute’s book of the same name, which is a collection of short stories.  Deadline reports that Kristen Scott Thomas is also attached and that offers are out to Colin Firth and Ed Harris.  Hopefully, with Seconds of Pleasure, Fraser and LaBute will both get back on track.

Casting Call: Jamie Foxx in HORRIBLE BOSSES; Vega, Dafoe, Isaac, and Rodriguez Join THE JESUIT; McGregor, Blunt, and Thomas Go SALMON FISHING IN YEMEN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 12th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

We have three pieces of casting news for you (and likely more on the way because of the deals being made at the Cannes Film Festival right now).  Leading off, Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, and Kristen Scott Thomas will star in Lasse Hallstrom’s Salmon Fishing in Yemen, written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire).  Since THR doesn’t say what the movie’s about, I’ll move on to the casting on films where we can give you something more substantial.

First up, Jamie Foxx has signed on to Seth Gordon’s dark comedy Horrible Bosses.  Also, Paz Vega will star in Paul Schrader’s The Jesuit with Willem Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, and Michelle Rodriguez in final negotiations to join.  For more on both of these projects, hit the jump.

Screen Daily has a report on a couple of flicks Memento Films is bringing to this year’s Berlin Film Festival.  First up is The Woman in the Fifth, a supernatural thriller from Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) starring Ethan Hawke and Kristen Scott Thomas.  The film is based on Douglas Kennedy’s novel about an American writer (Hawke) in Paris who embarks on an affair with an elegant and mysterious widow and who might have something to do with the murders that start taking place around him.  Might have something to do?  Elegant and mysterious widows are always responsible for surrounding murders.  Everyone knows that.

Hit the jump for news about Hello Darkness which is another  ANOTHER vampire film.  Oh goodie.

Christina Ricci Joins Robert Pattinson in BEL AMI

Production Weekly informs via its twitter feed that Christina Ricci has climbed aboard the erotically charged drama Bel Ami in the role of Clotilde, a promiscuous young housewife who engages in a fair bit of erotic charging with Pattinson’s Georges Duroy; it was also divulged in the tweet that filming on the project is set to commence next month.

A brief refresher: slated for a 2011 release, Bel Ami follows the aforementioned Duroy, a nineteenth-century French journalist who ascends Paris’ social ladder through a number of manipulative trists with talented and influential women. The film is based on Guy De Maupassant’s celebrated 1885 novel and will be helmed by noted theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod.  Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas are also set to co-star and, to the envy of Twifans the world over, be thoroughly taken advantage of by Pattinson. Thurman will play Duroy’s central paramour and ladder rung, Madeleine Forestier, while Thomas will play a socialite who is seduced by the suave, power-hungry protagonist.

Turning back to Ricci for a second, I’m glad she’s signed on for this. She’s a talented and underutilized actress, and it’s nice to see her involved in another high-profile project.
