Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s follow-up to his fantastic 2011 film Drive is set to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month, but three whole clips from Only God Forgives have graciously made their way online a tad early. The film’s red-band trailer promised another intense and gorgeous collaboration between Refn and star Ryan Gosling, and these three clips don’t disappoint. While I’m eager to see what the always-reliable Gosling has in store for us this time around, it’s Kristin Scott Thomas who is the highlight of these clips as she plays the mother of Gosling’s character, a woman who urges her son to seek violent revenge for the death of his brother in Thailand.

Hit the jump to bask in the moodiness of Refn’s latest. Only God Forgives also stars Vithaya Pansringarm and will open in theaters on July 19th.

Here’s a synopsis for Only God Forgives:
Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

Two new international trailers for Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn’s new film Only God Forgives have made their way online. These trailers delve deeper into the pic’s plot than the fantastic domestic trailer that was a released a couple of weeks ago, but they still highlight what looks to be one hell of a ride. Ryan Gosling stars a man who’s been living in exile in Bangkok for the past ten years after killing a cop. He manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation and finds himself in hot water after his brother is killed for murdering a prostitute. The boys’ mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body and instructs Gosling to take revenge and “raise hell.”

I really love what we see of Thomas’ character in these new trailers, and Gosling appears to turn in yet another subdued, affecting performance. Stylish, brutal, weird, Only God Forgives promises to be everything we could possibly want from the second collaboration between Refn and Gosling. Hit the jump to watch the trailers. The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month and opens in theaters on July 19th.

The first red-band trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives is now available. Star Ryan Gosling is positively seeing red in this color-saturated and atmospheric look at Refn's new revenge thriller. A little bit of Thai karaoke plays the overture for a few brutal scenes which force you to infer what this particular tale is about. Gosling sums it up nicely with a simple question at the end of the trailer. I cannot wait to see more.

Also Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm, Only God Forgives opens July 19th. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

One of the films that many are looking forward to in the coming year is director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive follow-up Only God Forgives. The filmmaker blew quite a few minds with the genre-bending Drive, and the Thailand-set Only God Forgives reunites him with his Drive star Ryan Gosling. Though the film’s release is a ways away, we now have a slightly better idea of what to expect from the pic by way of a very short teaser trailer. Gosling stars a man who’s been living in exile in Bangkok for the past ten years after killing a cop. He manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation and finds himself in hot water after his brother is killed for murdering a prostitute. The boys’ mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body and instructs Gosling to take revenge and “raise hell.” This footage is incredibly brief, but it's clear that Bangkok itself is a heavy influence on the film's visual style.

Hit the jump to check out the teaser. Only God Forgives reportedly opens on May 23rd, and is expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite admitting that he had "gotten into trouble" and was now "sworn to secrecy," Ethan Hawke confirmed that he and his longtime collaborator Richard Linklater would be shooting a follow-up to their critically acclaimed films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset this summer.

Almost ten years passed between the first two films, and we are quickly approaching almost a decade since the last. Though not much else is known about the next installment to this now-trilogy, Linklater and Hawke's interest in the passage of time is without question. The two have also been working on The 12-Year Project, literally filming a mere one vignette a year. For more on that project, the Sunset sequel and Hawke's other recent projects, hit the jump.

In an interview with Indie Wire, Hawke said of The 12-Year Project:
"it follows the life of a little boy from first grade to twelfth grade. And so the movie is a series of vignettes. I play his father; just little moments of childhood and stuff. What the movie’s largely really about is time."
Speaking of time, Hawke did speak to a feeling of pressure regarding the the follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset:
"The biggest change between this one and the last one is the Internet. The first time we did it, we didn’t have any pressure; nobody gave a shit."
In the rest of the very candid interview, Hawke talked about his latest film The Woman in the Fifth (out ...

ATO Pictures have released the trailer and poster for the thriller The Woman in the Fifth. The movie stars Ethan Hawke as a struggling writer who moves to Paris so he can be closer to his young daughter, but then strikes up an romantic entanglement with a mysterious femme fatale (Kristin Scott Thomas). I'm not exactly sure what to make the of the film since the trailer doesn't do a good job of lining up with the interesting plot synopsis, but it does do a good job of showing off some of writer-director Pawel Pawlikowski's cool visuals. I never heard much buzz—positive or negative—on the movie at last year's Toronto Film Festival, so maybe it's just flown under the radar, and hopefully The Woman in the Fifth will live up to its premise.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The Woman in the Fifth opens June 15th.

Here's the official synopsis for The Woman in the Fifth:
American writer Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) arrives in Paris to be closer to his young daughter who is living with his estranged ex-wife. Completely broke, he accepts a job as a night guard for a local crime boss. Stationed in a basement office, his only task is to push a button when a bell rings. The tranquility of the night, he hopes, will help him focus on his new novel. His days become more exciting when he starts a romance with Margit (Kristin Scott Thomas), a mysterious and ...

The domestic trailer for the adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s 1886 novel Bel Ami has gone online. The film stars Robert Pattinson as an ambitious young journalist who works his way up the social and professional ranks through a series of affairs with influential women. The trailer basically highlights Pattinson getting his seduction on, then tries to shoehorn in a bit about his character being redeemable. Call me crazy, but I don’t really find the tale of a liar wooing a bevy of women to be that interesting. I’m sure Pattinson’s fans will get a kick out of watching his bedroom eyes for two hours, but I’m eager to see the actor stretch his dramatic chops on a project that isn’t focused entirely on sex (or the lack thereof).

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, and Colm Meaney. Bel Ami will be available VOD on May 4th and opens in theaters on June 8th.

Here’s the synopsis for Bel Ami:
BEL AMI is the story of Georges Duroy, who travels through 1890s Paris, from cockroach ridden garrets to opulent salons, using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute's embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where sex is power and celebrity an obsession.

Now that the film has a firm U.S. release date, the U.S. poster for the adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s novel Bel Ami has gone online. It’s pretty terribly done, with Robert Pattinson front and center surrounded by the very photoshopped Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas against an ugly background. Furthermore, Pattison appears to be giving the viewer either his bedroom eyes or a death stare.

First of all, no, that is not the new image of Ryan Gosling from Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives. But hold on! We've kept the new image after the jump since it's a little spoiler-y. The above image is the first one we brought to you in February and trust me when I say that Gosling looks much worse off in the new shot. It only makes sense, since the violence of Only God Forgives has been reported to surpass that of Gosling and Refn's previous collaboration, Drive. In this film, Gosling plays Julian, the owner of a Thai boxing club that has strong connections within the criminal underworld. The film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) as Gosling's mob-boss mother. Hit the jump to see the new image and read up on the official synopsis of Only God Forgives.

Here's the official synopsis for Only God Forgives (also a touch SPOILER-Y for my tastes:
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.

When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.

We can only imagine that Team Edward-ers the world over are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to watch Robert Pattinson have his way with the finest beauties 19thC Paris has to offer in Bel Ami. Well, now they’ve got a date to circle, as Magnolia Pictures announced today that it’s acquired the steamy drama with eyes on a June 8 theatrical release.

Based on the celebrated 1886 Guy de Maupassant novel, Bel Ami focuses on ambitious young journalist Georges Duroy (Pattinson), who works his way up the social and professional ranks through a series of affairs with influential women. Directed by theatre vets Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, the film also stars Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, and Colm Meaney. Hit the jump for more, including the full press release.

Bel Ami, which was written by Rachel Bennette, debuted last month at the Berlin International Film Festival to somewhat mixed reviews. It’s a different sort of heartthrob for Pattinson—a suave, manipulative predator to his usual brooding, tortured soul. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles it. But for now, you’ll have to tide yourselves over with this trailer and these previously released pics of the once and future Edward Cullen in various stages of undress with all those delectable Bel Ami babes.

We've got three new clips from Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, the romantic comedy starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Amr Waked and Kristin Scott Thomas. The plot throws together a fishery expert (McGregor) and a PR consultant (Blunt) to help a sheikh (Waked) realize his vision of bringing salmon fishing to the desert. Facilitating this crazy idea is the British Prime Minister's Press Secretary (Thomas) who is looking for a "good news" win out of the Middle East. The clips do a nice job of highlighting the political tension, the budding love story between McGregor and Blunt's characters and the developing friendship between McGregor's fishing expert and Waked's sheikh. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen opens March 9th. Hit the jump to check out the clips.

We've previously seen a couple of trailers from the film and Matt had a chance to review it for last year's Toronto International Film Festival. Here's the official synopsis for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen followed by the new clips:
A visionary sheik has a big dream — to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn his dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on for its potential as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it ...

Don't say I never did anything for you, Robert Pattinson fans. 19 new images and a TV spot have been released for the period drama Bel Ami. The film takes place in 1890s Paris and centers on an impoverished man (Pattinson) who discovers that he can climb the social ladder by having sex with rich women. Looking at the images and watching the TV spot, Bel Ami strikes me as Robert Pattinson porn. I don't think there's going to be graphic sex in the movie, but basically the story and characters are simply a pretext for Pattinson to seduce every single straight woman in the audience. If that's why you want to see Bel Ami, I doubt you'll be disappointed. If you want to see Bel Ami for its costume design, then you'll also probably like what you see. So to recap: Bel Ami appeals to 1) fans of Robert Pattinson; 2) fans of 1890s Parisian couture.

Hit the jump to check out the images and TV spot. The film also stars Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Bel Ami opens in the UK on March 9th. Sony acquired the film at AFM but it's currently without a US release date.

A new trailer for Salmon Fishing the Yemen has gone online. The film centers on a fishing expert (Ewan McGregor) and PR consultant (Emily Blunt) who are thrown together to bring salmon fishing to the Yemen at the behest of a sheik (Amr Waked) and the Prime Minister’s press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas). I wasn’t bowled over by the first trailer, but I feel this cut is much more effective. The goofiness and emotionality both come on strong, and I feel like I’d enjoy spending two hours with these characters. Matt caught the flick at the Toronto Film Festival and found it surprisingly witty and funny, so I’m looking forward to checking it out once it hits theaters.

While Robert Pattinson fans have been waiting in vain for the domestic release of his new film Bel Ami, ten minutes of scenes from the pic have now hit the web with Pattinson’s lady-wooing skills on full display. The film is an adaptation of the 1885 Guy de Maupassant novel and stars Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, and Kristin Scott Thomas. This Bel Ami tease comes by way of a sizzle reel intended to pique interest at the Berlin Film Festival where the film is premiering. If Bel-Ami nabs distribution at the fest, the film will finally get a US release date. It’s currently set to open in the UK in March.

Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, Coriolanus, was a remarkably confident and well-made first feature, and absolutely worth your time despite the rushed ending sending the film out on a sour note. Screen Daily reports that he'll follow it up with the period drama The Invisible Woman, which will reunite him with his The English Patient co-star Kristin Scott Thomas. The film centers on the secret love affair between Charles Dickens (Fiennes) and his mistress Nelly Ternan (Like Crazy's Felicity Jones). Thomas will play Ternan's mother. Abi Morgan (Shame) wrote the screenplay, and shooting is set to begin in the UK on April 23rd.

The plot seems a little bland (I'm not sure why Dickens having a mistress is a big deal), but Fiennes earned my trust with Coriolanus, and Invisible Woman has a solid supporting cast. As for Fiennes' non-directing projects, he's playing Magwitch in Mike Newell's adaptation of Dickens' Great Expectations, and he has a highly-secretive role in the new James Bond movie, Skyfall. Fiennes will be seen in theaters next month reprising his role as Hades in Wrath of the Titans.

When the Palm Springs International Film Festival starts on January 5th, the honor of being the opening film will fall to Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The film, by Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules) and Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) is an adaptation of the Paul Torday award-winning novel of the same name. The plot follows a sheik (Amr Waked) who desires to bring salmon fishing to the Yemen, a wild idea that is facilitated by a fishing expert (Ewan McGregor) and a PR consultant (Emily Blunt) with the urgings of the Prime Minister’s press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas). While Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is set to open the festival, the German comedy Almanya, Welcome to Germany will close it out on January 15th. Hit the jump for more on Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

THR reported that Halstrom’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen would be opening the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which will screen 187 films from 73 countries in early January. Darryl Macdonald, the festival director had this to say:
“It’s a wide ranging line-up of highly accomplished and often provocative new films, coupled with an expanded archival section. I’m particularly delighted to be opening the festival with the U.S. debut of Lasse Hallstrom’s hugely engaging crowd-pleaser, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - the work of a master filmmaker, an Oscar-winning screenwriter and a celebrated cast. For the first time ever we are closing with a German comedy – and it is pitch perfect."

A new trailer for the period drama Bel-Ami has gone online. Based on Guy de Maupassant’s 1885 novel of the same name, the story centers on a poverty-stricken soldier who climbs the social ladder in Paris by manipulating a number of mistresses. The trailer is basically Robert Pattinson bedding a bunch of involved women, then being surprised at the fact that his “Imma sex every girl in Paris” attitude brings him trouble. His conquests include Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Christina Ricci. I haven’t read de Maupassant’s novel, but the story doesn’t exactly look all that appealing based on this trailer.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Omerod, Bel-Ami opens in the U.K. on March 2nd and is currently awaiting a domestic release date.
