What Awards Can BRIDESMAIDS Actually Win?

Just recently we took a look at the awards prospects of The Muppets, a film that is enjoying an incredibly positive critical response but isn’t exactly your typical “Oscar Movie.” Today we’ll consider a different film in a similar situation: Bridesmaids. When the Judd Apatow-produced comedy opened in May, it was surrounded by a good deal of advanced buzz thanks to a series of well-timed preview screenings. The opening weekend gross was impressive for an R-rated comedy, but enthusiastic word of mouth propelled the film to stellar box office week-after-week. Audiences fell in love with the Kristen Wiig-penned flick, and star Melissa McCarthy broke out in a big way. Hit the jump for our take on Bridesmaids’ chances this upcoming awards season.

BRIDESMAIDS Blu-ray Review

Coming into 2011, Bridesmaids looked like it might be another in a string of recent Judd Apatow-related misfires. But appearances are deceiving as the film quickly found an audience and was one of the biggest hits of the summer. Boo-yah for director Paul Feig, and co-writer and star Kristen Wiig. They nailed it. The film is a charming and real look at a woman in her thirties whose best friend (Maya Rudolph) is about to get married, and how friendship can be strained – but is often resilient – during such stressful but happy times. BRIDESMAIDS Becomes Highest Grossing R-Rated Female Comedy Ever

Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids is the little comedy that could. Despite a modest budget and no A-list stars, the Judd Apatow-produced film has been a consistent staple on the box office charts week after week. Now, after recently becoming the highest grossing entry in Judd Apatow’s library, Bridesmaids has become the highest grossing R-rated female comedy ever (via THR). The film’s current domestic tally sits at $152.9 million, enough to dethrone the previous “top R-rated female comedy” record-holder Sex and the City (apparently the term “comedy” has a loose connotation).

The script by star Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo hit that sweet spot of insane hilarity paired with a sizeable amount of heart. The film also owes a great amount of its success to director Feig (Freaks and Geeks) and the tour-de-force cast that includes Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd and stand-out Melissa McCarthy. If you’ve yet to see Bridesmaids, you’ve definitely missed out on one of the funniest movies of the year.

Work in Progress Cut of BRIDESMAIDS to Screen at SXSW

Buzz has been building around the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Bridesmaids starring Kristin Wiig since the film has started test screening. Now it looks like the current “work-in-progress” cut of director Paul Feig’s (Freaks and Geeks) film will be screening at this year’s SXSW Film Festival in Austin. Co-written by Wiig, Bridesmaids also stars Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and Jon Hamm.

The comedy centers on Wiig as the maid-of-honor doing her best to keep a group of wealthy, stuck-up bridesmaids happy during the pre-wedding events leading up to her best friend’s wedding day. The trailer was released early last month and shows definite promise. Bridesmaids opens in wide release on May 13^th.

Trailer for ALL GOOD THINGS Starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst

Magnolia has released the trailer for Andrew Jarecki’s All Good Things, which stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella.  It’s not a bad trailer when you consider that it doesn’t really tell you what the movie is about.  All Good Things is based on the true story surrounding the mysterious disappearances of the wife of real estate heir Robert Durst.  While I’m not sold on the film as a whole, it looks like it could be a must-see for Gosling’s performance alone.

Matt Lucas Cast in Director Paul Feig’s BRIDESMAIDS

Matt Lucas is trading in his suspenders and horizontal stripes for something a little more formal.  According to THR, Lucas (who recently played both “Tweedledee” and Tweedledum” in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) has agreed to join Universal’s Judd Apatow-produced comedy Bridesmaids (he was “in talks” last month).  While his role in the film has yet to be announced, one can only assume that the British actor will not be required to wear the CGI “Sumo-Suit” used to create “Tweedledee/Dum” in the shooting of Alice (although it could certainly be fun to have around the set).

The comedy, co-written by SNL gem Kristin Wiig along with actress/writer Annie Mumolo, will star Wiig as a maid of honor doing her best to keep a group of wealthy, stuck-up bridesmaids happy during the pre-wedding events leading up to her best friend’s wedding day.  Helming the film is veteran television director Paul Feig (Nurse Jackie, The Office, Arrested Development).

If Bridesmaids already sounds more promising to you than recent wedding film disasters (and when you consider 27 Dresses and Bride Wars, really how could it not?) then hit the jump to see the potentially hilarious cast joining Wiig in the film.

First Look at Tina Fey and Steve Carrell in DATE NIGHT

“Date Night,” the new film from Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”), revisits a classic Hollywood film plot – a married couple, despite having achieved the American Dream, find themselves in a rut and are unsure what to do next. Normally, that sort of plot results in a tense drama like “Revolutionary Road.” This time, however, audiences will be leaving theaters laughing. At least if Tinay Fey and Steve Carrell have anything to say about it. Hit the jump to find out more.

Photos taken only yesterday on the New Mexico set of the SNL skit-turned-feature “MacGruber” have made their way onto the interweb.  Aside from one glamour shot of Ryan Phillippe, the pics still don’t prove why Lorne Michaels decided to upgrade this one minute sketch parody of “McGyver” into a full-length feature… but that’s just me.  See what you think after the jump.
