The movie begins by warning audiences that the film’s events take place over a 29-day period. What it should have said is the film feels like it lasts 29-days. The Possession is a stereotypical take on the tried-and-true “innocent girl gets her body hijacked by demons” story that doesn’t give the genre anything new, but a lot of the same. And even that’s not done all that well. Hit the jump for our review of The Possession on Blu-ray.

Kyra Sedgwick has arguably the most difficult role in this weekend’s very good exorcism/family melodrama The Possession. As Stephanie, the caring mother of two, dealing with a divorce from her estranged husband (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), she has the unenviable task of playing the film’s ‘straight’ woman. While everyone (including most importantly the audience) knows her youngest daughter has been possessed by an evil-demon-in-a-box, she remains completely ignorant – falsely believing little Em is just acting out or that, well, it’s her no-good father’s fault. One can’t help but sigh in impatience. When is this woman going to see that the only logical conclusion is her daughter’s been taken over by an ancient Jewish demon? I mean – really? But Sedgwick is such a talented actress that you can almost, almost forgive her silly rationality.
In the following interview with Kyra Sedgwick, she talks about her own ‘true’ horror story (a haunted house she and husband Kevin Bacon purchased), whether she will ever return to television and the upcoming Daniel Radcliffe starring Kill Your Darlings. For the full interview, hit the jump.

The first trailer for the horror film The Possession has gone online. Produced by Sam Raimi, the film centers on a young girl who acquires an antique box at a yard sale, but she’s unaware that the box contains an evil spirit. First of all, if you haven’t been creeped out by the poster yet, take a look here. As for the trailer, let me just say that the film earns positive marks for not following in the found footage genre’s footsteps. The Possession trailer actually plays more like an homage to classic horror films like The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby and Poltergeist rather than any major horror film that’s been produced within the past ten years. It’s also refreshing to see an exploration of the darker side of Jewish folklore (the original film was titled The Dibbuk Box) rather than a rehashing of Catholic mythos. Director Ole Bornedal may well have found a combination of a respectable method of shooting and a capable cast that can restore some faith in the horror genre.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, and Natasha Calis. The Possession opens on August 31st.

Man on a Ledge will have a long and prosperous life playing on TNT for the next 134 years. That’s not an insult. Not every thriller needs to pump up our adrenaline, not every heist film has to dizzy our minds, and not every drama has to make us reconsider men and the ledges they stand on. Sometimes it’s enough to simply be a fun little movie that can play in the background while you’re working on something else. For the most part, Man on a Ledge manages to clear its modest bar but some key miscasting and wasted performances keep it from reaching the levels of The Negotiator or In the Line of Fire.

Summit has released the first trailer for Man on a Ledge. Sam Worthington stars as a cop in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He plans an elaborate escape that puts him “freshly shaven in an expensive suit, standing on a window ledge high above New York City.” The trailer makes this look like the film could be a spiritual sequel to The Negotiation (words I never thought I would have to write: “spiritual sequel to The Negotiator“) but still be a fun little thriller. The January release date makes me wary, but I like the cast, and the premise looks enjoyable enough.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Directed by directed by Asger Leth (Ghosts of Cité Soleil), the film also stars Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Kyra Sedgwick, Anthony Mackie, and Ed Harris. Man on a Ledge opens January 13, 2011.

We have a couple of bits of casting news to send your way tonight. First up, Kevin Smith has announced that Kyle Gallner (Red State) will play a character similar to “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky in Smith’s upcoming hockey-film Hit Somebody. Per Cinema Blend, Gallner will make a turn as a budding hockey star who is just entering the NHL. The actor joins a cast that already includes fellow Red State co-stars Nicholas Braun and Ralph Garman. Speaking of Red State, the film is scheduled to debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival which runs January 20th-30th.
Next up, Golden Globe-winner Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) has signed on to star alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the horror/thriller Dibbuk Box. Directed by Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch), Dibbuk Box tells the story of a family who discovers that a mysterious box they purchased at a yard sale contains a spirit that is determined to “devour its human host.” According to Deadline, Sedgwick will play the mother of the child who becomes attached to the death box. Dibbuk Box is currently slated for a Halloween release on October 28th.

Today, TNT announced that the forthcoming seventh season of their hit drama The Closer would be the last. Apparently the decision came from the series’ star Kyra Sedgwick and she’s quite aware how difficult it will be to finish the the show next year. The actress says, “I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on The Closer.” Series creator James Duff also comments, “It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers.” The series will hit its 100th episode in 2011 during its 15-episode run which begins in the spring. There’s still a few episodes left in the sixth season, so fans have some time to let the news sink in before the final season starts. Anyone disappointed?

Actress Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) is the latest addition to the thriller Man on a Ledge. The film stars Sam Worthington as a man convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, who is now standing on the ledge of a building seemingly ready to jump. However, things are not as they appear. We recently brought you the official synopsis of the film as well as a first look at the poster, which I highly recommend you check out. We also posted the first set photos from the film, featuring Worthington standing on the side of a building. Deadline reports that Sedgwick joins Ed Harris, Elizabeth Banks (Zack and Miri Make a Porno), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Ed Burns (27 Dresses) and Titus Welliver (the mysterious Man in Black from Lost) in quite an impressive cast. Man on a Ledge is currently filming and is set to hit theaters in early 2012.

I love both “Crank” movies. So it should go without saying that I can’t wait to see writer/director Neveldine/Taylor’s next movie “Gamer”. Also, I interviewed the two filmmakers at Comic-Con and after hearing them talk about the film, I’m even more excited to see it as it seems like they threw everything they had at making this film as crazy as it can be. But from the guys who made “Crank”, would you expect anything less. Anyway, in a few weeks I’ll be posting great interviews with the entire cast and Mark and Brian. Until then, check out 5 new images after the jump. “Gamer” hits theaters September 4th.
