The dark comedy doesn’t finish its second season until September 26th, but Deadline reports Showtime is satisfied enough with the ratings for The Big C that the cable network has decided to renew the series for a third season which will start shooting the 10-episode order early next year to debut sometime in the middle of 2012. The series follows Laura Linney (The Truman Show, Love Actually) as as Cathy Jamison who this season become an all-out warrior in the fight against her Stage 4 melanoma, while her husband, Paul (Oliver Platt), stepped up to become her greatest advocate and treatment “cancierge.”

Laura Linney HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON; Ricky Gervais SPY KIDS ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD slice

Laura Linney (The Big C) will star alongside Bill Murray in Hyde Park on the Hudson.  The film focuses on FDR’s love affair with his cousin, Daisy, during a June weekend in 1939 when the British King and Queen visited Roosevelt’s upstate New York cottage in what was the first ever visit to America by a member of the British monarchy.  As we previously reported, the notoriously reclusive Bill Murray has signed on to star as FDR.  Now, Deadline reports that Linney has signed on to play FDR’s cousin/lover, Daisy.  I’ll watch anything with Bill Murray and it’ll be interesting to see who will end up playing Eleanor Roosevelt along with the King and Queen.  Roger Mitchell (Morning Glory) will direct the film.

In other casting news, Ricky Gervais has signed on to voice the character of Argonaut in the upcoming Spy Kids film, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.   In the press release Gervais said, “Not only am I lending my voice to Spy Kids, but they can keep it.  I’m sick of it.”  Not much is known about Argonaut besides the fact that he is a robot spy dog.  Gervais joins the cast which already includes Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale, Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook, Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo , Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara.  Spy Kids: All the Time in the World opens on August 19, 2011 and it’s written and directed by Robert Rodriguez.  Hit the jump  for the synopsis.

The first trailer for Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious has been released. The film tells the story of a paralyzed DJ (played by the film’s scribe, Christopher Thornton) who somehow acquires the ability to heal, though is unable to make himself walk. Judging from the trailer, Ruffalo definitely shows some promise as a director. Factor in the top-notch cast, and I’m very interested in seeing how this film plays out. The flick premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January where it took home the Special Jury Prize.

Sundance 2011: THE DETAILS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 25th, 2011 at 3:10 pm

the-details-slice

The Details is a darkly comic tale that can never quite seem to get a handle on its tone.  The film plays with notions of fate but only a fate that will deal out punishment and retribution no matter how much good you do or if you even receive a kindness.  That’s not a problem for a black comedy, but The Details grinds to a halt as its main character receives valuable life lessons or as he heads into another predictable comic set-up. Director Jacob Aaron Estes’s best attempt to tie it all together is with an insufferable Danny Elfman-esque score.  Stars Tobey Maguire and Laura Linney do a great job handling the comedy, but even their scenes eventually feel repetitive.  The Details has a lot to offer, most notably frustration.

Tonight I’ll be live-blogging the 2011 Golden Globe Awards.  The Golden Globes continue to receive attention because they used to be seen as a reliable indicator of what films would be receiving Orscar love.  However, due to shifting deadlines, Oscar ballots are already due and there’s no way that the Globes can affect the Oscar nominees.  Also, the Globes, which are hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are known for being delightfully carefree with their integrity and will nominate you if you show them enough love.  They’re basically like the MTV Movie Awards except they serve food and there aren’t any sketches.

However, I think host Ricky Gervais will do a fine job tonight and I’m curious to see if the Globes will follow through on their clearly bought-and-paid-for-love of films like Burlesque and The TouristClick here for a list of the nominees and hit the jump for my on-going live-blog and be sure to keep refreshing the page for my comments.  The 2011 Golden Globe Awards air at 8pm (EST) on NBC.

Gabourey Sidibe Interview THE BIG C

by Christina Radish    Posted: August 17th, 2010 at 7:46 am

On the new Showtime series The Big C, actress Gabourey Sidibe is playing Andrea, a student of Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney), a woman diagnosed with terminal cancer who has not told anyone in her life about her condition. Seeing a confidence and spiritedness in the mean and snotty teenager, Cathy decides to take on Andrea’s smart-aleck ways as a challenge to nurture and help, and through the process helps herself.

During an interview while at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Gabourey Sidibe talked about why it was important for her to do a project that was really funny and how her character definitely doesn’t suffer fools. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Laura Linney Interview THE BIG C

The Big C, the latest original series from Showtime, follows the life of Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney), a reserved, stifled, Minneapolis schoolteacher who receives life changing news and decides, from that moment on, to make drastic, long-overdue adjustments to the way she is living her life. Receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis causes the perfect wife and mother to want to throw away her conservative, structured life and let her freak flag fly.

During a recent interview while at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, actress Laura Linney talked about taking on this new role and how it has made you evaluate certain things in her own life. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

It’s a big day on the isle of Elba.  You can check out Idris Elba (The Wire) in this newly released trailer for Takers, BBC America has committed to airing the UK psychological thriller Luther he headlines in the States, and the actor has signed on for the Showtime comedy The Big CEW reports that Elba will appear in at least four episodes of C, which stars Laura Linney as a suburban mother diagnosed with cancer.

In Luther, Elba plays an “intellectually brilliant but emotionally impulsive murder detective.”  The Neil Cross-created show will air on BBC America later this year.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Zach Braff Declares SCRUBS Dead on Facebook; Trailer for Showtime’s THE BIG C Starring Laura Linney and Gabourey Sidibe

Scrubs TV show image NBC - slice.jpg

Two slices of TV news for you today.  First off: Be honest, did any of you really know that Scrubs was still on? If so, Zach Braff has some news for you, delivered via his Facebook feed [via THR]. Here’s what he had to say:

“Many of you have asked, so here it is: It appears that ‘New Scrubs,’ ‘Scrubs 2.0,’ ‘Scrubs with new kids,’ ‘Scrubbier,’ ‘Scrubs without JD’ is no more. It was worth a try, but alas … it didn’t work. zb”

Now, I was a loyal watcher of the first eight seasons, which were just lighter than air and just about perfect ensemble TV comedy, but the “New Scrubs,” or whatever you want to call ABC’s bizarre attempt at a ninth season transformation, has been not just unwatchable but even worse – instantly forgettable. If Braff is indeed right – and since the show has had only two new episodes since the end of  March, I’d imagine so – it’s an ignominious end for an often-brilliant show that should really have gone out last year with most of its original cast.

Gabourey Sidibe Joins Laura Linney in Showtime’s THE BIG C

by Keith Demko    Posted: March 9th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

slice_gabourey_sidibe_01.jpg

She may have lost out to Sandra Bullock at Sunday night’s Oscars, but Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire star Gabourey Sidibe isn’t wasting too much time worrying about it. She’s already moving on to her next project, this time on the small screen with Showtime.

The new dark comedy The Big C will star Laura Linney as a suburban wife and mother who is diagnosed with cancer, and Sidibe will play one of the students at the high school where she teaches. It will begin shooting its 13-episode season in May and will air at the end of summer.

HBO may be piling up the A-list directors, but count this as a real coup for Showtime, signing one my favorite actresses with Linney and now quickly-rising star Sidibe in what should make for a twistedly-funny show. [ET Online via The Playlist]

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival isn’t heating up-it’s heated.  The Festival kicks off tonight and will run through January 31st.  Steve will be there (as soon as his flight stops getting delayed) and will bring you loads of interviews and his thoughts on the films making their debuts.  I’ll be here in Atlanta, seething with jealous rage.  This rage is exacerbated when I see clips from Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut, Sympathy for Delicious, the rock biopic The Runaways, and the trailer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, the first film from brilliant street artist Banksy.

After the jump you’ll find nine clips (in one player) for Sympathy for Delicious, starring Ruffalo, Juliette Lewis, Laura Linney, Christopher Thornton, and Orlando Bloom.  We’ve also got a clip from The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning (you can also check out the eight high resolution images from the film that Steve posted yesterday).  Finally, we also have the trailer for Last Exit Through the Gift Shop.  I’ve also included the official synopsis for each film.

TV News: Laura Linney and Piper Perabo Head to the Small Screen, While Mark Burnett Holds OUR LITTLE GENIUS Back a Grade

By far, the biggest story in television right now is the possible removal of Leno from NBC’s schedule after the Olympics, but there is plenty of other newsworthy movement in TV Land at the moment.  Showtime has ordered The Big C, which stars Laura Linney as a wife and mother whose life is shaken when she is diagnosed with cancer.  USA has picked up Covert Spaces, which stars Piper Perabo as a young CIA trainee.  And FOX has pulled quiz show Our Little Genius from the schedule less than a week before its intended January 13th premiere date for reshoots.

To learn what lured film stars Linney and Perabo to the small screen and why Burnett delayed his own show, hit the jump.

HBO’s JOHN ADAMS Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: July 1st, 2009 at 4:38 pm

John Adams HBO image Paul Giamatti.jpg

You have to give it up for HBO. The mini-series as a format is on its death-nell. Network television has no interest in the format any more, or hasn’t for a while. They’d rather have a regular series, or a reality show. But the expense of putting on these sorts of things are of an older school, a school that is now all but vanished. But when HBO wants to do something (with the encouragement of Tom Hanks for sure), it gets done, and so the story of John Adams has been made as a seven part mini-series. Harrumph.
