Every once in awhile, a movie really surprises me. It’s not too often. The reason for that is by the time I sit down in a theater, due to watching all the trailers and covering the film for sometimes two years while the project is coming together, when I finally see the finished film, I know all the major plot points and characters. It’s an unfortunate side effect of writing about movies.
Which is why Red Hill really floored me. I’d heard good things going in, but I was not prepared for how much I’d enjoy this film. Across the board, from the filmmaking to the acting, it’s top notch and it definitely deserves a wide audience. So you’re probably asking what is it about and how can I see it? Hit the jump for those answers – along with my exclusive interview with Ryan Kwanten (he plays the lead).

Since the 3D revolution began, the studios have tried to screw us for more money on post converted 3D movies. As most of you have seen firsthand, post conversion looks horrible and it’s absolutely not worth the money. I cite Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, and The Last Airbender as examples of bad post conversion.
So why am I talking about 3D and post conversion? Because I caught a screening of Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians in IMAX 3D and thought the 3D looked great. If you weren’t aware, Snyder made the movie in 3D, so it’s no surprise the 3D is well done. Actually, the opening shot of an Owl flying and the Warner Bros. logo sets the stage quite well. Since I constantly bash post conversion, I wanted to take a moment to remind you to support 3D when it’s done right. And although I didn’t think the movie was perfect, the animation is amazing as almost every shot is like a painting come to life. I definitely think it’s worth catching this weekend. And if you do…needless to say, make sure to see it in 3D!

Opening next weekend is director Zack Snyder’s Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole. Based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky, everything I’ve seen from the film leads me to believe this is going to be a special movie and something that’s going to surprise audiences. If you haven’t seen the awesome trailer, you should start there. Based on the trailer and getting to see five sequences from the film at a recent WB press event, Legend of the Guardians looks like Lord of the Rings with owls. This is a good thing. Anyway, with the film getting ready to hit theaters, I’ve been given seven clips from the film and over 40 images. Hit the jump to check everything out.
A new Russian poster for Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole has just been released and when I said “the best way I can describe the movie is it’s Lord of the Rings with Owls,” I didn’t think they’d make a poster about it. Because when I look at this poster, all I see is Mordor in the background. But maybe I’m reaching. Either way, the poster is cool, so click the image above for high res. Thanks to IMPA for the poster.

While there are a lot of movies arriving later this year, one of the ones I’m most excited to see is director Zack Snyder’s Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole. Anyway, Warner Bros. in the UK have released a new quad poster and you can check it out after the jump. It’s like a previous poster only wider. Legend of the Guardians gets released September 24 and in the UK on October 22.

Tonight, Warner Brothers and director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) welcomed members of the press to the studio’s lot for a screening of new footage from Snyder’s first animated film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole which features the voices of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Ryan Kwanten, Anthony LaPaglia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, and David Wenham. For those new to the program, the film is based upon “Guardians of Ga’Hoole,” the series of children’s fantasy books written by author Kathryn Lasky. The story revolves around brothers Soren (Sturgess) and Kludd (Kwanten) as the two take opposite paths when a fall from their treetop home results in their being captured by a collection of evil owls known as the Pure Ones.
In case you’re not completely sold on an animated owl adventure from the ultra-stylized Snyder, I might suggest easing your inhibitions. To be concise, the footage of the film screened tonight looked incredible. That said, for a general breakdown of the footage shown tonight, hit the jump. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole opens in beautiful 3D (no sales pitch here, it truly is incredible to look at) on September 24th.

While we all knew it was coming, Fox has finally picked a date for the re-release of Avatar and it’s August 27. Even though there was some debate as to how much footage would get put back into the film as James Cameron said he had over 30 minutes of deleted scenes to pick from, the final number is eight minutes.
What’s interesting about that number is…we all should have seen it coming. The original length of Avatar is 162 minutes, and the IMAX platter can only support a 170 minute film. What that means is, Cameron’s desire to play the film in IMAX theaters meant he could only add 8 minutes back in. I’ll bet if IMAX could’ve played a 180 film, he would have added 18 minutes back in. More after the jump:

At last week’s Saturn Awards, I was able to interview director Zack Snyder and his producing partner (and wife) Debbie Snyder on the red carpet. While interviews on the red carpet are usually short, I was able to speak with them for about 6 minutes and got updates on Sucker Punch, Legend of the Guardians, what are they going to do at Comic-Con, what’s up with the 300 Prequel Xerxes, and a lot more.
Some of the highlights were Snyder confirming they did a friends and family screening of Sucker Punch recently and it went over great, they have big plans for Comic-Con and we’ll get out first look at some Sucker Punch footage and exclusives, the finale of Legend of the Guardians is still being worked on and none of the footage has been in either trailer, he’s seen some of Frank Miller’s Xerxes comic and it’s still and wait and see if he’ll make a movie out of it, Snyder is currently writing a new project (doesn’t reveal what it is), and they talk about the challenges of trying to make two films at the same time. It’s a great update on all their projects so hit the jump to take a look:

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and I think it looks amazing. What’s great about the movie is how every frame looks like a painting and I think this is going to be something special in 3D. What I also love about the trailer is how it looks like Zack Snyder took his style and vision and applied it perfectly to an animated film. Watch the trailer for yourself and tell me it doesn’t look awesome.

At this year’s ShoWest, I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and his producing partner (and wife) Debbie Snyder for their upcoming animated movie Legend of the Guardians. The movie is being done by the same company that did Happy Feet and it’s based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole children’s novels. If you haven’t seen the awesome trailer, watch it here.
During the interview they talked about why they wanted to make the movie, how they’ve been working on it since before Watchmen, how many “Zack Snyder shots” can we expect, how they did the 3D, and, of course, we also talked about his next live-action movie Sucker Punch and what can fans expect at Comic-Con. Hint: our first look at Sucker Punch!
If you’re a fan of Zack Snyder, you’ll love the interview. As always, I’ve provided both the transcript and the audio of the interview.

Steve is on the Warner Bros. red carpet at ShoWest and snapped a photo of the banner for Zack Snyder’s upcoming animated movie Legends of the Guardians, except it doesn’t look like that’s the full title anymore. Now it looks like it’s Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. When the project was first announced, the title was The Guardians of Ga’Hoole. The added subtitle makes me think that maybe there’s a franchise consideration, but it could also just be that people like owls and silly names.

Opening this Friday is the romantic drama Remember Me. The movie stars Robert Pattinson and Emilie De Ravin as two young lovers from different walks of life. Here’s the synopsis:
Robert Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has had a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) ever since tragedy separated their family. Tyler didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through, until the day he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. Love was the last thing on his mind, but as her spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him, he begins to fall for her. Through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life. Soon, hidden secrets are revealed and tragedy lingers in the air, as the circumstances that brought them together threaten to tear them apart.
To help promote the film, I recently spoke to Emilie De Ravin. We talked about how she came to the project, how does she talk about the movie without revealing too much info, filming in NYC, Lost, her next movie Legend of the Guardians, and a lot more. Hit the jump to check it out:

The trailer for Zack Snyder’s latest, Legend of the Guardians, is now online thanks to Yahoo Movies. It’s an animated film from the people behind Happy Feet and is based on the Guardians of Ga’Hoole children’s novels. The title was just (thankfully) changed from that and this trailer will be attached to prints of Alice in Wonderland. It was also just announced that this, along with Snyder’s follow up Sucker Punch, will be released in 3D.
Personally, I’m loving the artistry of this trailer. The music gives it a very Where The Wild Things Are feel and the look closely resembles 300, if 300 stared a bunch of CG owls. Making Legend of the Guardians seem even more epic is the insane voice cast. There’s Sam Neill, Hugo Weaving, Emilie de Ravin, Jim Sturgess, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren, Abbie Cornish, David Wenham and many more.
The film will be released in prime 2011 Best Animated Feature Oscar consideration time on September 24, 2010. After the jump, check out the trailer itself, still photos and the official plot synopsis.

The first images from director Zack Snyder’s animated film, Legend of the Guardians (formerly titled Guardians of Ga’Hoole), are now online and they’re a hoot. Because the movie features owls. And owls are known for making a “hooting” sound. Moving on, USA Today has a first look at the film and describes it as a cross between Watership Down (good) and The Lord of the Rings (also good). Here’s their synopsis:
The film, based on the first three books of Kathryn Lasky’s series, follows Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess), a young barn owl who is kidnapped by the owls of the St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, or St. Aggie’s. The academy is supposed to be an orphanage, but instead it brainwashes its pupils into becoming soldiers who will ultimately clash with the wise, peaceful owls of Ga’Hoole.
The books are aimed at children but have adult and historical themes, such as wars meant to mirror Normandy Invasion and the ancient Battle of Thermopylae (aka, the battle in Snyder’s 300). USA Today focuses on how Guardians will be a less violent film than Snyder’s previous three, but they do not explore how much speed-ramping will be used. The trailer, which is attached to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, may answer that question. Hit the jump to check out five images from the film, each pertaining to a different character.
