LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS Character Images and Gollum Poster

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 30th, 2012 at 2:29 pm

We’ve been covering the LEGO Lord of the Rings set unveiling with a great deal of anticipation here over the past few months, and today the full set has finally be revealed. They’re (as expected) super cool, and not only do we get all the major characters from the Fellowship, but LEGO is also releasing Uruk-hai, Ringwraith, Moria Orc, and Mordor Orc characters. But that’s not all! My favorite character of the lineup is definitely the uber-creepy Gollum, for whom we also have a LEGO character poster. All in all, it’s a pretty good day for fans of LEGO and The Lord of the Rings. Hit the jump to check out the images and Gollum poster.

We’re all pretty excited about the upcoming LEGO sets based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  LEGO is now starting up their marking push for the sets, which will begin to roll out this summer.  Today, LEGO has released a poster featuring LEGO Aragorn in his The Return of the King poster pose.  That’s right, kids: Viggo Mortensen in LEGO form.  That’s happening.  Let us rejoice.

Awesome Images of SHAUN OF THE DEAD in LEGO Form

When I was a kid, LEGO didn’t have movie licenses.  We only had “Space”, “Castle”, “Pirates”, and “City”, and we were damn glad to have them.  Now there are all these fancy-shmancy movie tie-ins like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, and Lord of the Rings.  But one LEGO licensed-property we’ll probably never see is Shaun of the Dead.  For some bizarre reason, LEGO doesn’t make sets based on R-rated zombie movies, but these Shaun LEGO would be amazing.  They’d even be true to the movie since you’d be able to pull David apart.

Hit the jump to check out the images of terrific Shaun of the Dead LEGO that will never exist.  Then have fun pining after something you didn’t even know you wanted until now.

First Look at the Upcoming LEGO Sets for THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Last week, we reported that LEGO had added The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to its list of licensed properties and the sets would be start being released in summer 2012.  Preliminary images from those sets have now leaked online and they reveal some of the locations and events that will be LEGOized.  Naturally, there are the smaller sets that focus more on events (“Gandalf Arrives”, “Shelob Attacks”) but the larger ones are based on locations (“The Battle of Helm’s Deep”, “The Mines of Moria”).  There’s no word on how many pieces each set contains, but we can see how the hobbits will be shorter than the humans (the hobbits have no knees).  While the age recommendations go up to 14-years-old, it’s only a recommendation.  They can’t stop me from buying and building these.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  [Update: Lego asked us to take down the images.  Sorry if you missed them.]

One Minifig to Rule Them All: THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT LEGO Coming Summer 2012

LEGO has picked up the rights to some of the biggest movie properties around including Star Wars, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Batman.  Now they have another big title (technically two titles) on the way: The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  I can only begin to dream of the massive, time-consuming glory these sets will offer.  It will probably cost well over $100 for the set, but I want to spend an entire day building Helm’s Deep (I can’t confirm they’re going to offer it, but I’d be shocked it they didn’t).  But think of the possibilities: The Shire. Rivendell. Mirkwood. Rohan. Minas freaking Tirith.

Hit the jump for the press release and sound off in the comments about what you can’t wait to build.  The release of the LEGO sets is timed to coincide with the build up to the first part of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit adaptation, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opens December 14, 2012.  Part two, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, opens December 13, 2013.

Warner Bros. Greenlights LEGO Movie with CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Duo; ROBOT CHICKEN Helmer to Co-Direct for 2014 Release

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 12th, 2011 at 11:55 am

Last year, we reported that Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were working on a movie based on everyone’s favorite construction toy, Lego. While most scoffed at Hasbro’s plan to make movies out of games like Ouija and Candy Land, the notion of a Lego movie isn’t all that terrible. Add in the fact that Lord and Miller, whose Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is an incredibly hilarious/sweet work of animation goodness, and Lego actually sounds pretty appealing. Well now the film has officially been given the go-ahead, and is on track for a 2014 release. Hit the jump for more.

Lucasfilm Announces LEGO STAR WARS: THE PADAWAN MENACE Cartoon Network Special

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: July 7th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Though The Clone Wars animated series has obviously garnered a big audience of Star Wars fans on Cartoon Network, the series just might be a bit too intense for some of the younger viewers who still want to journey into a galaxy far, far away. Therefore, children and parents alike might be happy to hear about Lucasfilm’s announcement of a new 30-minute animated special called LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace which will air on Cartoon Network on Friday, July 22nd at 7/6c. Since the video games that have inspired the series are a lot more childish and silly in tone than the real Star Wars films, this will definitely be lighter fare for younger Star Wars fans, but the animation should be something fun to behold. If you’re interested, hit the jump for images from the half-hour special plus the synopsis and the full press release with details on encore airings and such.

First CARS 2 Trailer in LEGO

YouTube user Patrick Boivin has recreated the first Cars 2 trailer in Lego.  While it should be noted that he was hired by Disney/Pixar and Lego to make this trailer, I think it’s really well done and worth watching.  Also, I love Lego, and who doesn’t want to see Lego versions of Mater and Lightning McQueen.  Hit the jump to watch.

Best Picture Nominees in LEGO Form

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 27th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Inevitably, every year a number of different visual interpretations of the Best Picture nominees for the Academy Awards hit the net. While some are better than others, this one is pretty great. I give you, the 2010 Best Picture nominees as interpreted by LEGOs. My personal favorite is the 127 HOURS set-up: brutal, yet still funny. Hit the jump to check them out.

Lego Version of CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS

by Max Lichtig    Posted: December 13th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

A YouTuber by the name of “Keshen” has posted a pretty damn cool Lego translation of the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops.  The ground breaking video game set a record by selling more than 7 million copies worldwide within 24 hours of its release, so it was just a matter of time until people started paying homage to its awesomeness. Though I am forever a Halo enthusiast, the fast-paced multiplayer gameplay of Black Ops never ceases to amaze me with such an innovative spin on the first-person shooter genre.

In the video, a Black Ops aficionado will notice references to red-dot scoping, stealth knifing, tomahawk throwing, and even the dual-wield perspective. Check it out after the jump.  It’s really worth your time:

Exclusive Interview: Writer/Director Phil Lord Talks LEGO Movie, 21 JUMP STREET, CLOUDY Sequel

Phil Lord interview slice 21 Jump Street Lego movie

Last week we reported the guys who directed the wonderful Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Phil Lord and Chris Miller) were attached to write and direct the Lego movie at Warner Bros.  Since the original report had very little information about how they planned on bringing Lego to life, I used some connections to get Phil Lord on the phone for an exclusive interview.  Since he’s also hard at work developing the 21 Jump Street movie at Sony, he also gave me an update on that project and what’s the status of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs sequel.  Here’s some highlights:

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Directors to Build LEGO Movie

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 28th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

I’m not against a movie based on Lego, especially if it’s being helmed by the guys who directed the wonderful Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsHeat Vision reports that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in final negotiations to write and direct the Lego movie.  HV also says, “The plot is being kept under wraps, but it will be an adventure in the Lego world mixing live action and animation.”  Warner Bros. and Lego weren’t sure which way they wanted to go and Lord and Miller were able to sell both companies on a pitch that included both.

Lord and Miller may have had a strong presentation for their take on a Lego movie, but the $243 million worldwide Cloudy grabbed at the box office coupled with strong critical praise that film received also factored into WB and Lego’s decision.  The directors are currently working on a big-screen adaptation of the TV series 21 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill.  The plan is to follow that up with the Lego movie.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD in LEGO Form

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 15th, 2010 at 9:07 am

I usually don’t go for “Movie done in LEGO” stories, but this one was too good to pass up.  Flickr user “Sir Nadroj” recreated scenes from Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood using LEGO bricks.  They’re still photos, but they are still great nonetheless. Check them out after the jump.

Producer Dan Lin on the Future of the TERMINATOR Franchise and the Ending of TERMINATOR SALVATION

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 17th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

terminator_salvation_movie_image_factory_floor.jpg

Last night I posted the first of my “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”.  As I explained yesterday, I spoke at length with the Sherlock Holmes producer about not only his latest film, but everything he has in development.  Since the conversation ran so long, I’ve decided to break up the interview into many smaller parts.  Yesterday we covered the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, and today it’s about the Terminator franchise.

As one of the executive producers of Terminator Salvation, I decided to ask Lin what he thought about the ending they released versus the one that got shelved due to it leaking on the internet.  I also asked him what’s the status of future Terminator movies and was Salvation a profitable experience for all parties.

Hit the jump for what he had to say:
