By now you’ve probably given up the prospect of trying to get your mom to agree to see The Avengers for Mother’s Day, but if you’re still searching for that perfect last-minute gift, the multi-talented and uber charming Hugh Jackman has come to the rescue.  The actor is currently filming director Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) big budget movie musical adaptation of Les Miserables, but he took some time out of his busy schedule to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day from the set in full Jean Valjean garb.  As if there wasn’t already reason enough to think that Jackman was the coolest/nicest guy in showbiz, he goes and makes a video as funny and sweet as this.

On top of the fact that this is a genuinely kind gesture from Jackman, we also get a brief look at Hooper’s Les Miserables soundstage sets in London.  Hit the jump to watch the video.  Les Mis also stars Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway and hits theaters on December 14th.

While Universal Pictures skipped CinemaCon/ShoWest the past couple of years, they more than made up for it with the best presentation of 2012.   While all the studios have great-looking movies arriving in 2012 and 2013, I wanted to see every single movie Universal talked about at CinemaCon  In addition, not only did they bring in the movie stars and directors, they world premiered footage from nine movies including Les Miserables, Ted, Savages, This is 40, R.I.P.D., Oblivion, The Bourne Legacy, Snow White and the Huntsman, and 47 Ronin.  In addition, they made sure to remind attendees that while filming hasn’t started on Fast and Furious 6 (the working title), it’s arriving next May, and Despicable Me 2 opens in July.  For what I thought about all the movies plus a complete video blog recap, hit the jump.

With CinemaCon kicking off on Monday, we’ll be bringing you lots of coverage from the event throughout next week including interviews, panel recaps, and more.  Steve is already in Las Vegas for the event, and while walking the floor he came across the very first promo poster for The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper’s big-budget movie musical Les Miserables.  For those unaware, CinemaCon is a convention put on for all the major theater owners in order to get a look at what the studios have to offer for the rest of the year; it’s basically Comic-Con for theater owners.  As such, this is just a very simple promo poster that’s pretty much just advertising the stellar cast and the fact that Les Mis is headed to the big screen this year.

Hit the jump to take a look at the promo poster, which is surely the first of many posters and standees we’ll be bringing you over the next few days.  If you missed it, be sure to check out the recent set photos and videos which feature Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway singing the finale song.  Les Miserables opens on December 14th.

Update: We’ve come across another version of the Les Miserable promo poster and added it after the jump

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, MAGIC MIKE, Anthony Hopkins in HITCHCOCK, Set Photo/Video Recap, What Superhero Films Could Learn from BATMAN: THE MOVIE

If you’re a regular around these parts on the weekends you may have noticed that Collider was “Top 5-less” last Saturday. For the first time since our inaugural installment last May, the weekly feature failed to grace the site. The reason? My bachelor party. That’s right, instead of spending my Saturday morning/afternoon putting together a highlight reel of coverage from the preceding week, I gallivanted through the streets of Chicago partaking in debauchery in its most primal form (i.e. arcade games and karaoke). All this in mind, a big thank you to Steve and the rest of the Collider team and to you, the reader, for the excused absence is in order. It’s good to be back.

In this week’s edition you’ll find new posters and new footage from The Amazing-Spider Man courtesy of the film’s latest international trailer, the first trailer and poster for Steven Soderbergh‘s male-stripper inspired Magic Mike, the first look at Anthony Hopkins as The Master of Suspense in Hitchcock, a set photo/video recap featuring, among other things, Star Trek 2 and Les Miserables, and Matt’s superhero film editorial which begs the question, “Why So Serious?” (see what I did there?). As always, a brief recap and link to each can be found after the jump.

Yesterday, new set photos from Tom Hooper‘s Les Miserables went online and now three set videos have followed.  A couple of the videos are pretty standard stuff.  One video has Javert (Russell Crowe) riding around on horseback, and another has Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) charging out of a church and ripping up a piece of paper while singing the last note of a song, although I’m not sure which one (perhaps “What Have I Done?”).  But the most exciting video is the cast singing part of the show’s finale.

Hit the jump to check out the videos.  The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Eddie RedmayneAmanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, and Helena Bonham CarterLes Miserables opens December 14th.

Set Photos Featuring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman in LES MISERABLES

If you love Anne Hathaway for her long, flowing locks, you might want to look away.  Hathaway chopped off a good chunk of her hair to play factory worker Fantine in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Miserables.  We’ve got set photos of her singing alongside Hugh Jackman, who stars as Jean Valjean.  Jackman has certainly cleaned himself up compared to prior photos; we also previously posted shots of Russell Crowe as Javert and Eddie Redmayne as Marius.  This appears to be the first look at a dramatically gaunt Hathaway and, for those who aren’t familiar with the story, is certainly an appropriate look for her character’s arc throughout the film.  Les Miserables also stars Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter, and opens December 14th.  Hit the jump to see the set photos.

After set photos of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in Les Miserables leaked online, Jackman has tweeted the first official image.  The image shows Jackman as protagonist Jean Valjean before the character has turned his life around and become a respectable factory owner.  He looks fine and while I don’t mean to be greedy, but maybe we could have a bit of the Tony-award winning actor singing one of the songs, especially if they’re being sung on set.

Last week, we got our first look at Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper‘s adaptation of the musical Les Miserables.  Now we have the first image of Russell Crowe as Valjean’s relentless pursuer, Police Inspector Javert.  Crowe certainly cuts a fine figure as the character, and I’m eager to see how he’ll play the character, and particularly how he’ll perform “Javert’s Soliloquy”.

2012 is shaping up to be a killer year for movies. We were recently tantalized by a bevy of Prometheus goodness, we’ve got the one-two superhero punch of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, and towards the end of the year we’ve got some promising stuff from Quentin Tarantino, Peter Jackson, Judd Apatow, Kathryn Bigelow and Baz Luhrmann. One of the more high profile projects coming later this year is director Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech follow-up: a large-scale movie musical adaptation of Les Miserables. The all-star cast is lead by Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, and today the first image of Jackman as Jean Valjean has surfaced.

The actor is obviously filming the Valjean scenes that involve his imprisonment, as Jackman is looking incredibly dirty and scraggly. Gone are those perfectly coiffed locks of hair, replaced by a bad buzzcut and nasty beard. It’s a fun look at one of the more exciting productions of 2012, and I’m interested to get a look at Crowe as the nefarious Javert. Hit the jump to check out Jackman’s Valjean. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Helena Bonham Carter. Les Miserables opens on December 14th. [Update: We've added a couple more images to the article after the jump]

Amanda Seyfried Talks GONE and LES MISERABLES

by Tommy Cook    Posted: February 21st, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Amanda-Seyfried-GONE-LES-MISERABLES-interview-slice

In the curtly titled Gone, Amanda Seyfried stars as Jill, a pill-popping, suicidal chronic liar whose sister may or may not have been kidnapped by the same mystery-man that abducted Seyfried (or did he?) two years prior. The lack of conviction in the previous sentence could be due to any of the aforementioned pill-abusing/emotionally unstable/duplicitous attribute(s) of the character.  But Seyfried/Jill sure does seem convinced that something terrible is afoot. It honestly doesn’t matter if Jill’s right/wrong/crazy/lying/all-of-the-above — because you can’t help but want her to be true. Reality doesn’t matter, only conviction.

In the following interview, Amanda Seyfried discusses the morally grey nature of Jill and the difficulties in playing a scene all by your lonesome. Seyfried was also more than excited to discuss Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables – in particular the live recordings for the musical. Gone opens everywhere this Friday. When last we reported on the female lead casting of director Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, we told you that Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) had been offered the role of Cosette and Taylor Swift (Valentine’s Day) had been asked to play Eponine.  While Seyfried has accepted, Deadline is reporting that stage performer Samantha Barks has bested Swift for the role of Eponine. She previously performed the role in 2010’s London production of Les Miserables as well as the 25th anniversary concert last year. Barks will join Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit and Seyfried for the December 7th release. Click here to see all of our previous coverage on Les Miserables. Hit the jump for more casting news concerning Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) joining the David Hackl (Saw II) thriller, Red Machine.

A bit of minor casting news tonight for the Les Miserables fanatics among you: Aaron Tveit (Gossip Girl) has joined the cast.  Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Eddie Redmayne are confirmed to star.  There was some doubt about Amanda Seyfried‘s involvement when Universal left her off the official cast list earlier in the month, but THR lists Seyfried in the confirmed.  Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter have been linked to the roles Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, but the official word has yet to come in.

Tom Hooper is directing the musical as his follow-up to a Best Director Oscar win for The King’s SpeechLes Miserables is scheduled for release on December 7, 2012.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis, including a breakdown of who is playing which part.

First Official Synopsis for LES MISERABLES Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 7th, 2012 at 6:50 pm

les-miserables-slice

Universal has released the official synposis for the new feature adaptation of Les Miserable, with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Eddie Redmayne confirmed to star.  Here’s the thrust of it:

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

You’ll notice no actor in parentheses next to “Cosette.”  Amanda Seyfried reportedly signed a deal to play Cosette earlier this week, but it has not officially been announced yet.  Likewise, Sacha Baron Cohen is rumored for the role of Monsieur Thenardier, but he is not listed among the official cast.  Directed by Tom Hooper, Les Miserables is scheduled for release on December 7, 2012.  Read the full synopsis after the break.

Amanda Seyfried and Taylor Swift Offered Roles of Cosette and Eponine in LES MISERABLES [Updated]

With recent word that director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) would be recording live vocals from his actors rather than pre-recording them, it made sense to pad his line-up with actors who possessed some singing talent. Or singers who possessed some acting talent. Well, in this case, he’s done both, as Amanda Seyfried (In Time) and Taylor Swift (Valentine’s Day) have been offered roles in the cinematic musical, Les Miserables. Seyfried has been offered the role of Cosette, a part in which her operatic background should come in handy. Country singer Swift has been offered the role of Eponine, having beaten out such actresses as Lea Michele (Glee), Scarlett Johansson (We Bought a Zoo) and Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March). Hit the jump for more on Les Miserables. [Update: Deadline reports Seyfried has signed on to play Cosette]
