It turns out that American Idol is still good for some things, like airing this new TV spot for The Dark Knight RisesChristopher Nolan’s epic final piece to his Batman trilogy is now less than two months away, but don’t expect the marketing to stop any time soon.  We recently posted some new images, a slew of character posters and even the Tumbler and Bat-Pod on tour in all their gritty glory.  This new TV spot gives us a better look at the Bat-Wing, which is good, since pretty much all we knew about it before was “it’s not a car.” There are also some new shots of Tom Hardy’s Bane accompanied by some dialogue I had to listen to twice to understand.  Some good shots of Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne and Michael Caine’s Alfred sharing some dialogue.  What are you waiting for? Hit the jump to check it out! [Updated with a second TV spot featuring Catwoman.]

Now that The Avengers has delighted audiences and killed at the box office, it’s time to move onto the next big and shiny superhero toy: The Dark Knight Rises*.  The film will be Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale‘s final go-round with the Batman, and audiences are excited to see how, to quote the poster, “the legend ends.”  And after the legend has ended, how will Warner Bros. proceed with one of their most successful franchises?

Hit the jump for my prediction on how The Dark Knight Rises will end, how I’d like the Batman franchise to continue, and what I think Warner Bros. has in store for the caped crusader.

New DARK KNIGHT RISES Image/Poster Reveal Batman Wanted for Murder and the Secret to Bane’s Mask [Updated]

Since releasing the first images of Tom Hardy as Bane, fans of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises started asking, “What’s up with that mask?”  A new article in Rolling Stone seems to have answered the question along with a point-by-point graphic detailing just why the muscle-bound madman needs a mask at all (and the answer provides a key plot point).  On the other side of the spectrum is the also-masked vigilante known as Batman (Christian Bale), and in this new wanted poster supposedly released by Warner Bros., we see exactly what the Caped Crusader is accused of doing.

The Dark Knight Rises also stars Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman and Liam Neeson.  Look for the bat to bow on July 20th.  Hit the jump to check out the images.

Update: Thanks to a number of readers emails, we’ve been informed the Wanted Poster was part of the earlier viral marketing campaign.

Liam Neeson to Star in A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES; Scott Frank to Direct

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 17th, 2012 at 9:15 am

We just shared the first images of Liam Neeson being a badass in Taken 2, and now official word comes that he’s set to topline an adaptation of Lawrence Block’s crime novel A Walk Among the Tombstones.  Moreover, Scott Frank is set to direct from a script that he wrote.  The film centers on an alcoholic ex-cop who investigates the kidnapping of a heroin drug lord’s wife.  Last we heard, D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) was in talks to direct Frank’s script, but today Exclusive Media and Cross Creek Pictures have announced that Frank himself will be stepping into the director’s chair.

Frank wrote and directed the 2007 crime pic The Lookout, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, of which I’m a big fan.  The director took an atypical approach to the visuals and crafted some seriously interesting characters, so I feel confident that A Walk Among the Tombstones won’t simply be another bland, “gritty actioner with a male lead” that gets lost in the shuffle.  Neeson’s a busy guy, so production on Tombstones won’t get underway until February 2013 in New York City.  Nevertheless, this is definitely a project to keep an eye on.  Hit the jump for the press release.

Liam Neeson Kicks More Ass in First Images from TAKEN 2

Liam Neeson’s career path is an interesting one.  He first broke out with dramatic roles in films like The Mission, Les Miserables, and Schindler’s List, but now approaching the age of 60, Neeson has become the go-to actor when you need a badass lead.  He’ll be seen taking names and such later this year in director Olivier Megaton‘s (Colombiana) sequel Taken 2, and the first images from the film have landed online along with a few quotes from the actor himself.  Naturally the images show Neeson as a guy you do not want to mess with, especially if you want to keep your neck from being snapped in half.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra to Reteam with Liam Neeson for Airplane Thriller NON-STOP

With yesterday’s news that Kick-Ass 2 is finally moving forward with Jeff Wadlow set to direct, I wondered what movement on that sequel meant for the Liam Neeson-fronted airplane thriller Non-Stop that Wadlow was also attached to helm.  My anxious, sleepless nights about Non-Stop can now come to an end as Variety reports that director Jaume Collet-Serra is in talks to reteam with his Unknown star and take over the director’s chair on Non-Stop for Dark Castle Productions.  The script was written by first-timers John Richardson and Chris Roach and the story takes place on an international flight on which Neeson is forced to stop a threat (naturally).  Hit the jump for more, including what this means for the live-action Akira remake.

At this morning’s 20th Century Fox CinemaCon 2012 panel, Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos (Co-Chairman Fox Filmed Entertainment) world premiered footage from all their upcoming releases and talked about what they have coming up in the future.  While I was excited to see more of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, and Liam Neeson kicking a lot of ass in Taken 2, the real surprise was Ang Lee‘s Life of Pi.  Called unfilmmable by anyone that’s read Yann Martel‘s 2001 novel about a boy and a tiger that get stranded at sea, the unfinished footage that Fox world premiered today was nothing short of stunning, and it was easily the highlight of their presentation.  While you might have wondered if Ang Lee could pull it off, based on what I saw today, Life of Pi is an early contender for Best Picture and all the other year end awards.  Hit the jump for more.

Liam Neeson and Olivia Wilde to Team Up for Paul Haggis’ THIRD PERSON

Writer/director Paul Haggis has confirmed two of the stars for his upcoming film Third Person. Though the Crash director certainly has his plate full with scripting gigs at the moment, he’s been busy penning another ensemble piece that he plans to direct. The film will take place in three different cities centering on three different couples, and the director confirmed that one of the couples will be played by resident bad ass Liam Neeson and the lovely Olivia Wilde.  Hit the jump for more on the project.

Liam Neeson Can’t Stop Being a Badass in NON-STOP

He’s been a Jedi master, a wilderness survivor and a man with a particular set of skills.  Now, Liam Neeson will put all (or at least some) of those skills to the test as he toplines the airplane thriller, Non-Stop.  Via Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment, Non-Stop is a self-contained thrill ride that takes place on board an international flight. Neeson is in negotiations to play an aging air marshal who faces a threat during said flight, and probably eliminates it  swiftly and with extreme prejudice. Hit the jump for more on Non-Stop.

TOP 5: ANCHORMAN 2, WRATH OF THE TITANS, Debut of our Podcast THE COLLISION, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in Lego Form, Trailer Recap

Last week presented me with the first opportunity I’ve had in a while to catch two movies in a theater within 24 hours of one another (cue the scoffing of real cinephiles). While I’ll sure that I’ll be hammered for that previous statement when it comes time to renew my movie blogger certification, the truth is that, in the small market I call home, only the most mainstream of the mainstream films ever make it to the silver screen. So, with that said, I’d just like to thank the creative forces behind 21 Jump Street and The Hunger Games for giving me the opportunity to spend 1/6 of a day at the movies with films that, while drastically different in almost every conceivable metric, were solid from beginning to end.

Moving on, in this week’s installment the Top 5 is offering modest coverage of Anchorman 2‘s forward progress, Wrath of the Titans interviews with Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, director Jonathan Liebesman and more, the debut of our new podcast, The Collision, The Dark Knight Rises trailer in Lego form, and a recap of some of the week’s top trailers. Per usual, you can find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

WRATH OF THE TITANS Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 29th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

wrath-of-the-titans-movie-image-sam-worthington-slice-review

2010′s Clash of the Titans was an absolute mess.  The story made no sense, the movie wasted its cast, and the film was clearly cut to hell with perhaps a more interesting tale left on the editing room floor.  The problems were compounded by thoughtless action scenes and atrocious 3D.  Wrath of the Titans solves the confusing-story problem by making the plot stolid and obstinate.  The action scenes are just as big but even more pointless, and the 3D looks fine but adds nothing to the experience.  There are some brief, glorious moments where strong performances peak through, and we get a glimpse at some imaginative designs.  These few moments help the sequel barely clear the low bar set by its predecessor.

Former Cast Member Confirmed to Return for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Though this news comes from the studio itself, given that The Dark Knight Rises is pretty much the biggest movie of the year, I’m keeping things spoiler-free here on the frontpage. Needless to say, a former cast member’s return to the franchise has now been doubly confirmed. For those of you averting your eyes from any and all Dark Knight Rises spoilers for the next four months (good luck with that), you may not want to click through. For the daring, hit the jump to read more.

I’ll say again, SPOILERS for The Dark Knight Rises follow after the jump. Click through at your own risk.

Opening this weekend is director Jonathan Liebesman’s (Battle: Los Angeles) Wrath of the Titans.  In the sequel to Clash of the Titans, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is tasked with stopping the titans and saving Zeus (Liam Neeson) from Hades’ stranglehold (Ralph Fiennes).  The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Bill Nighy, Edgar Ramirez, Toby Kebbell and Danny Huston.  And for those wondering how the sequel turned out, Wrath of the Titans is what I hoped Clash of the Titans would be.  It’s got a solid story, incredible effects, and the 3D is really well done.  I’ve seen it twice (including IMAX 3D) and it’s definitely recommended.  For more on the film, here’s five clips.

During my interview with Worthington and Neeson, we talked about how their characters have changed, what shortcomings of the first film did they want to correct, how they prepared for the sequel, what their most challenging action scenes were, Taken 2, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.
