A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY Review

I didn’t want to write this review because it would involve me giving more thought to repulsive, selfish characters who populate a comedy that’s almost entirely devoid of laughs.  There’s something fascinating about a movie that sets up jokes and then forgets to deliver a punchline.  And because awful character delivering non-jokes isn’t enough, the film is saddled with limp, thoughtless direction that misses every opportunity for a laugh.   When A Good Old Fashioned isn’t being clichéd, it’s being dull, and sometimes it’s both, but it’s hardly ever funny.

Britton, Oswalt, Huebel, Lynskey, and More Join Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD [UPDATED]

The cast for the pre-apocalyptic rom-com Seeking a Friend for the End of the World has just kind of exploded.  The film was already set to star Steve Carell as a man who is joined by a woman (Keira Knightley) to find his old high-school sweeheart before the world is destroyed by an asteroid.  Yesterday, we learned that the talented Gillian Jacobs had joined the film and now we’ve received a press release announcing that a truckload of other great actors have signed on as well.  Check out this line-up: Connie Britton, Patton Oswalt, Rob Huebel (who yesterday signed on to another apocalypse-based comedy, Rapturepalooza), Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, Melinda Dillon as well as Aaron Brown (The District), Tonita Castro (The Sarah Silverman Program), Mark Moses (Desperate Housewives), and Bob Stephenson (Jericho).  And this is all in addition to the previously announced cast-members William Petersen, Adam Brody, Rob Corddry (also in Rapturepalooza), Derek Luke, and Lindsay Sloane.  How can the movie squeeze in this kind of ensemble?  It’s a road-trip picture, which means most of these folks will probably only have a scene or two, but it’s better than nothing.

Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is making her directorial debut from her own script.  Production on the film begins this week. Hit the jump to check out the press release.

[Update: We've updated the article with a couple of set photos featuring Carell and Knightley. Check them out after the jump]

Derek Luke (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Lindsay Sloane (She’s Out of My League) are currently in talks to join Keira Knightley and Steve Carell in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Written/directed by Lorene Scafaria (who penned Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), the film centers on two neighbors (Knightley and Carell) who decide to go on a road trip to find Carell’s high school love prior to an asteroid ending life on Earth as we know it. Production on Seeking is expected to begin later this month.

Per Variety, Luke’s role would be as Knightley’s ex-boyfriend, a military man who is primed and ready to face the end of the world head on in his bomb shelter. Sloane would play a “friendly waitress who is rolling on Ecstasy as doomsday approaches.” In addition to the already mentioned cast, we previously reported that Adam Brody, Rob Corddry, and William Peterson are also in negotiations to join Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

Alice Eve and Krysten Ritter Shes Out of My League.jpg

Opening this Friday is She’s Out of My League.  The movie stars Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve , T.J. Miller, Mike Vogel, Nate Torrence, Krysten Ritter, Geoff Stults and Lindsay Sloane.  The premise is Baruchel plays an average Joe – with not much going for him – when out of the blue a successful and gorgeous woman falls for him (Alice Eve).  He’s stunned.  So are his friends.  The big question is… how does he keep the girl?

To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with Alice Eve and Krysten Ritter.  We talked about doing press, how they got involved in the project, filming in Pittsburgh, and do they agree with the film’s logic about only being able to date within two of your number.  Meaning if you’re a six, the highest you can reach is an eight.  Hit the jump to see what they had to say:
