‘Twas the Wednesday before Christmas, but before I get going, I’ll end this rhyme so it doesn’t start blowing.  That’s right, we have arrived at that fabled time of year when Hollywood finally unwraps some of its most-anticipated titles.  After its IMAX triumph last weekend, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol went wide on Wednesday and quickly vaulted over both Sherlock Holmes 2 and Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 to claim first place with $8.6 million.  M:I 4 also topped David Fincher’s much-hyped version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which snuck into theatres a day ahead of its official December 21st release date.  From 2,914 locations, Dragon Tattoo has earned an estimated $5.1 million so far – just slightly behind what True Grit saw on its pre-Christmas debut one year ago.  Rounding out yesterday’s top five was Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin.  One of Spielberg’s two end-of-year offerings (War Horse arrives on December 25th), Tintin earned a relatively-soft $2.3 million from 3,087 domestic theatres, but a giant $240 million internationally.  With Christmas falling on a Sunday, this weekend’s totals are not expected to equal 2010 (when Little Fockers reigned), but we’ll keep you updated either way.

Title Wednesday Total
1 Mission Impossible 4 $8,600,000 $25.7
2 Girl with the Dragon Tattoo $3,500,000 $5.1
3 Sherlock Holmes 2 $4,284,000 $54
4 Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 $3,510,000 $32.9
5 Adventures of Tintin $2,300,000 $2.3

LITTLE FOCKERS Blu-Ray Review

Once upon a time in the late 90s and early 2000s, Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller were a comedy duo that could not be stopped. From their first appearance together in Stiller’s film The Cable Guy back in 1996 to their continued work in movies like The Royal Tenenbaums, Zoolander, and Meet the Parents, Wilson and Stiller were in a group alongside actors like Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Steve Carrell that helped give a fresh take in the changing world of comedy. Fast forward a decade and the two are now known for making some of the most stale and generic comedies being released. Once pioneers of the revitalized genre, it’s been a hard fall from grace for the two. This is fully on display in the film Little Fockers, now on Blu-ray.  Hit the jump for the rest of the review.

January suffered another down weekend, with estimated grosses for the top ten films down almost 56% over this weekend in 2010.  Paramount had reason to celebrate, as True Grit outdrew Little Fockers in the weekend race for the first time.  Season of the Witch, 2011’s first new title, struggled while Sony/SG’s Country Strong did modest business in its first expanded nationwide run.

Title Weekend Total
1 True Grit $15,000,000 $110.4
2 Little Fockers $13,800,000 $124
3 Season of the Witch $10,700,000 $10.7
4 Tron Legacy $9,803,000 $147.9
5 Black Swan $8,400,000 $61.4
6 Country Strong $7,300,000 $7.4
7 The Fighter $7,000,000 $57.8

Friday Box Office – TRUE GRIT Rides Past LITTLE FOCKERS; SEASON OF THE WITCH 2011′s First Disaster?

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: January 8th, 2011 at 8:50 am

true_grit_international_movie_poster_slice_01

It’s box office déjà vu.  For the second Friday in a row the Coen Brother’s True Grit is number one with $4.5 million – just beating the $4.2 million of Little Fockers.  The two films have been taking turns in the top spot for the past week; though the more kid-friendly Fockers has managed to claim the weekend crown for the last two sessions.  The diminishing returns for the comedy, however, combined with a total lack of interest in the week’s new titles, means that True Grit may be destined for its first weekend win since its pre-Christmas release.  Relativity’s Season of the Witch placed third with $3.7 million – evidence of just how low a bar is being set for the first non-holiday weekend of 2011.  The Nic Cage period piece is expected to come in below $10 million through Sunday and has the distinction of scoring the lowest Rotten Tomato score I can remember with just 1% Fresh.  Sony/Screen Gems’ Country Strong isn’t much, er, stronger at number 5 and an 18% Fresh rating: but with a budget of just $15 million the Gwyneth Paltrow drama has much less riding on a strong first weekend showing.  Overall, the weekend looks like it will be down by at least 50% over 2010 levels, again.  Details tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 True Grit $4,500,000 $99.9
2 Little Fockers $4,200,000 $114.4
3 Season of the Witch $3,700,000 $3.7
4 Tron $2,700,000 $140.8
5 Country Strong $2,575,000 $2.7

New Year’s Box Office – LITTLE FOCKERS Edges Out TRUE GRIT For Number One with $26.3 Million

Though it’s a brand new year, we’ll be left cleaning up after 2010 for weeks to come.  After falling to second place on New Year’s Eve, Little Fockers managed to edge past True Grit to retain the box office crown for a second weekend in a row. All hail the king. Overall, 2010 will end up only slightly behind 2009’s record with over $10 billion in profits – due largely to early successes like Avatar and Alice and Wonderland, of course.  Nothing in the ass-end of the past year is even coming close to those titles in terms of dollars or attendance.

Title Weekend Total
1 Little Fockers $26,300,000 $103.2
2 True Grit $24,500,000 $86.8
3 Tron Legacy $18,300,000 $130.8
4 Yogi Bear $13,000,000 $66.1
5 Narnia 3 $10,500,000 $87.1
6 Tangled $10,008,000 $168
7 The Fighter $10,000,000 $46.3
8 Gulliver’s Travels $9,100,000 $27.2
9 Black Swan $8,500,000 $47.4
10 The King’s Speech $7,600,000 $22.8

Weekend Box Office – LITTLE FOCKERS Stays On Top with $34 Million; TRUE GRIT Strong in Second; GULLIVER’S TRAVELS Less Than Impressive

Christmas Day didn’t add much cheer to this year’s box office: holiday receipts were down approximately 44% over 2009.  Little Fockers stayed on top for the three-day weekend, earning an estimated $34 million from 3,536 locations and a five-day cume of $48.3 million.  Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels opened Saturday, meaning it had one less day to work with when it came to tallying up weekend earnings.  The Jack Black adventure inspired only $3.5 million in its debut, giving it a two-day estimate of $7.2 million.

Title Weekend Total
1 Little Fockers $34,000,000 $48.3
2 True Grit $25,600,000 $36.8
3 Tron Legacy $20,100,000 $88.3
4 Narnia 3 $10,800,000 $63.9
5 Yogi Bear $8,800,000 $36.7
6 The Fighter $8,500,000 $27.5
7 Gulliver’s Travels $7,200,000 $7.2
8 Black Swan $6,600,000 $29
9 Tangled $6,500,000 $143.7
10 The Tourist $5,700,000 $41.1

Friday Box Office – LITTLE FOCKERS Soft in First with $5.1 Million; TRUE GRIT Rides Past TRON LEGACY to Take Second Place

With Christmas Eve falling on a Friday this year – and no new releases to discuss – this will not be your average Friday box office report.  Universal’s Little Fockers spent a third day in first place on Christmas Eve, though reduced holiday attendance knocked the sequel’s estimates off by at least 30% from Thursday’s $7.1 million… nothing average about that.  Despite its 11% Rotten Tomato score, Fockers should close the five-day holiday frame with a so-so $43 million. Childless adults made the difference for True Grit on Friday.  The Western claimed the number two spot on Christmas Eve with an estimated $4.8 million. The film should wrap its first five-days with $25 million, which would make the Coen Brother’s remake pretty remarkable for a modern Western.  Disney’s Tron Legacy was third on Friday with $3.9 million – a number that should improve once families venture back to the malls today and Sunday.  Of course, final weekend numbers will depend on how Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels fares in its Christmas Day launch.  The Gulliver’s reviews have been slightly better than Fockers, but that’s not saying much…

Title Friday Total
1 Little Fockers $5,100,000 $19.4
2 True Grit $4,800,000 $16
3 Tron Legacy $3,900,000 $72
4 Narnia 3 $2,200,000 $55.3
5 Yogi Bear 3D $2,100,000 $30

Wednesday Box Office – LITTLE FOCKERS Opens in First with $7.2 million; TRUE GRIT in Third with $5.2 Million

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: December 23rd, 2010 at 9:42 am

Here are the estimates for the Wednesday before Christmas.  Universal’s Little Fockers debuted in first place with $7.2 million from 3,536 locations.  The last film in the franchise, Meet the Fockers, launched on the same day in 2004 and rang up an initial $12 million on its way to a five-day Christmas haul north of $70 million.  That history is unlikely to repeat itself.  True Grit opened in third place on Wednesday, with the Coen Brother’s take on the John Wayne classic estimating $5.2 million from 3,047 theatres.  TRON: Legacy placed second on Wednesday with $5.3 million. After beginning the week with two days above six million, Disney’s fantastic voyage has a new domestic estimate of $62.1 million.  Too bad that the BAD weather in Europe took a bite out of the film’s international profits; EVERY film’s international prospects, come to think of it.  We’ll have updates throughout the holiday.

Title Wednesday Total
1 Little Fockers $7,200,000 $7.2
2 Tron Legacy $5,300,000 $62.1
3 True Grit $5,200,000 $5.2
4 Yogi Bear $2,900,000 $24.6
5 Narnia 3 $2,500,000 $50.1

Interactive Trailer for LITTLE FOCKERS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 20th, 2010 at 8:38 am

This past year, we’ve seen the rise of “Interactive Trailers”, which allow viewers to stop the trailer and go deeper into the film, whether it’s with director’s commentary, photos, or fun facts.  The “i-Trailer” was done well with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Social Network, and for those films, both of which reference interactive mediums (video games and the Internet, respectively), an interactive trailer makes sense.  Why Universal decided to make an interactive trailer for Little Fockers makes somewhat less sense.  Unless one of the behind-the-scenes clips is someone handing Robert De Niro a paycheck, I don’t think anyone really needs to go deeper into Meet the Parents universe.

But if you’re just bonkers for this franchise, then hit the jump to check out the interactive trailer.  Little Fockers stars Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo, Barbara Streisand, Jessica Alba, and Dustin Hoffman.  It opens December 22nd.

6 Movie Clips and New Images from LITTLE FOCKERS

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 13th, 2010 at 8:47 am

Since the 1970′s, Robert De Niro has made countless films.  While some have clearly missed the mark, a few of them are considered classics in every sense of the word.  Some of my favorites are Goodfellas, Heat, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part 2, and Righteous Kill.  Kidding with that last one.

However, while he’s made some amazing films, not all of them have been box office hits.  In fact, you might be surprised to learn that his two biggest hits were not made with Martin Scorsese, but with Ben Stiller.  While some might dismiss Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, Parents made $166 million (worldwide) and Fockers made $280 million (worldwide).  With this kind of money, it’s no surprise Universal made a third entry (called Little Fockers) and it gets released December 22.

Anyway, Universal has released 6 clips and a number of new images from the film.  Check them out after the jump – along with the official synospis:

New Trailer and Images from LITTLE FOCKERS

A new trailer for Little Fockers has made its way online.  Featuring an ensemble of talents including Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Jessica Alba, and Harvey Keitel, the film marks the third installment in the Meet the Parents series.  Directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie) and penned by scribes John Hamburg and Larry Stuckey, Little Fockers tells the story of Jack Byrnes (De Niro) prepping Greg Focker (Stiller) for the role of Byrnes family patriarch.  Admittedly, none of the Meet the Parents films have been, nor will ever be, earth-shatteringly great.  That said, they almost always succeed in making me laugh and, honestly, I won’t ask any more of them.

In addition to the trailer, after the jump you’ll also find a slew of new images from the film that were sent our way earlier today.  Little Fockers hits theaters on December 22nd.

New Posters for LITTLER FOCKERS Starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro

Universal has unveiled new banners for the Paul Weisz-directed threequel Little Fockers, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. While the comedy has undergone some production woes, most notably a last-minute effort to inject Dustin Hoffman into the film, Fockers looks to be on track to meet its December 22nd release date. Whether that’s good news or bad news depends on how much you’re looking forward to spending more time with Greg and the Focker clan.

Both Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers were directed by Jay Roach, who left the series to helm this year’s Dinner for Schmucks with Paul Rudd and Steve Carell. Paul Weisz (American Pie) eventually took the reins and will attempt to inject some fresh blood into a franchise that already felt dated in its second outing. Hit the jump for more, Focker.

Dustin Hoffman Returns for LITTLE FOCKERS via Pick-ups Shoots

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 24th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

slice_meet_the_fockers_movie_image_dustin_hoffman_ben_stiller_01

After negotiations earlier this month, Universal has managed to bring Dustin Hoffman back on board for Little Fockers and will insert him into the movie via pick-up shoots.  According to Deadline, Fockers is scheduled for a week’s worth of shooting in September and will be filming six entirely new scenes, four of which will include Hoffman’s character, Bernie Focker.  Hoffman originally didn’t return for the new film because he couldn’t reach a deal with Universal.  However, producers and John Hamburg and Jay Roach were able to convince the actor to return and reportedly at the cost of what they were originally going to pay him.

The pickups with Hoffman are for “some pivotal scenes opposite Barbra Streisand, and then in a big scene at the end of the movie involving all the major characters. Other pickup scenes focus on Ben Stiller and the kids.”  Despite this major fix of re-introducing Hoffman into the film, I doubt audiences will mind (if they even know about it).  Meet the Fockers scored $279 million domestic in 2004 and judging by the trailer, the sequel doesn’t look like it’s changed anything that made the first two films so popular.  Little Fockers opens on December 22nd.
