Ksenia Solo Talks LOST GIRL, LOCKE & KEY and BLACK SWAN

On the drama series Lost Girl, airing Mondays on Syfy, actress Ksenia Solo plays Kenzi, a con artist and thief, who is extremely street-smart and resourceful. She is the only true confidante of Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus that feeds off the sexual energy of humans, and her wide array of contacts makes her very useful. Regardless of the darkness in her past, Kenzi’s focus is now on protecting Bo from a world that will never understand her as well as she does.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ksenia Solo talked about what attracted her to this role and series, that she’s always loved fantasy and sci-fi, the cool wardrobe and looks she has as Kenzi, getting to work little bits of herself into the role (like getting to speak Russian and play the drums), how tight the whole cast has gotten, and promises that you can always expect the unexpected with this show. She also talked about how much she enjoys personally interacting with fans, her thoughts on social media, her shock and disappointment that Locke & Key (in which she played the role of Dodge) never got picked up to series, how proud she is of her involvement with Black Swan, and how amazing the Life Unexpected fans still are (even though the show was canceled awhile ago). Trailer for the LOCKE & KEY Series That Will Never Be

Fox passed on Locke & Key, the series adaptation of Joe Hill’s fantasy-horror comic.  The producers were proud of their pilot, though, and wanted fans to see it.  So, in a unique move, IDW Publishing screened the first episode at Comic-Con to a very positive reception.  Head writer Josh Friedman was very clear there is no chance the series will resurface at Fox or anywhere else, so don’t get your hopes up.  But if you weren’t able to attend the screening, and want to get a sense of what you’re missing, a trailer for the would-be series has popped up online.

It looks pretty crazy.  It’s clear the creative team did not shy away from the darker horror elements of the story, which must’ve been a hard sell to a broadcast network.  Based on the trailer, I wish Locke & Key could get its shot, but I understand why it didn’t make the cut.  Judge for yourself after the jump.

Comic-Con 2011: Schedule for Friday, July 22nd; Includes THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, FRIGHT NIGHT, and THE WALKING DEAD

If you thought Thursday was crazy at Comic-Con, then the schedule for Friday will make your brain break apart. There were some high profile panels on Thursday, but Friday it’s non-stop. Sony is looking to own the day with their 90-minute panel for Total Recall, 30 Minutes or Less, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and The Amazing Spider-Man. Hall H will also be hosting presentations for The Adventures of Tintin, Raven, Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, Underworld 4, Batman: Year One, Pacific Rim, Seventh Son, Paradise Lost, Mass Effect, and Fright Night.

The TV side is also on overdrive with a pilot screening of Locke & Key, and panels for The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory, Children’s Hospital, Bones, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, The River, Black Dynamite, Eureka, Bob’s Burgers, Falling Skies, ThunderCats, Robot Chicken, Ugly Americans, Warehouse 13, and True Blood. Frosty and other Movie Bloggers Say What They’re Looking forward to at Comic-Con 2011

As usual, there will be plenty of mainstream flicks vying for the attention of the masses at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. This Comic-Con will be slightly different as some films will be dropping Hall H presentations and instead aim their presence to other aspects of the Con. But there will also be marquee films like The Amazing Spider-Man and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 taking the big room. The final schedule has yet to be released but Steve and other movie bloggers have chimed in on what they’re looking forward to at this year’s Comic-Con. Personally, I’m eager to see which smaller films pick up buzz from their presentations and to hang out with my peers from New York and LA who I rarely see. Also, if there was a demo of Batman: Arkham City I could play, that would be all right.

LOCKE & KEY Series Pilot to Screen at Comic-Con

Though Fox ultimately decided to pass on the series adaptation of the graphic novel Locke & Key, audiences will still get a chance to see the pilot. Deadline reports IDW Publishing, the company behind the book, is hosting a special screening of the pilot complete with a panel discussion featuring creators Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, the pilot’s writer/executive producer Josh Friedman and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. However, the audience won’t be all that huge since the screening has been set in Room 8 (with the panel following in Room 9) on July 22nd at 10:30am. So if you’re desperate to see the fallen pilot, this might be your only chance. Of course, if fan reaction is big enough, perhaps the network will reconsider. Fox Passes on LOCKE & KEY Series, Will Retool Ethan Hawke’s EXIT STRATEGY

Last night came a barrage of news from the Fox network with infuriating news of cancellation of The Chicago Code, Lie to Me and many more along. Of course, out with the “bad” and in the with the hopefully good meant that J.J. Abrams Alcatraz got picked up along with a few other new series for the fall. Well, now we have word on a couple of shows that didn’t quite make the cut as EW learned yesterday that the network passed on Locke & Key, the adaptation of the comic book series from Joe Hill. Despite having names like Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci behind it, apparently the pilot just didn’t deliver. There was talk of a limited series maybe coming together instead of a full fledged series, but those hopes have since been dashed by Deadline.

In addition, it appears that another series at Fox, Exit Strategy starring Ethan Hawke, may be retooled in order to be picked up later. The potential series would focus on a team of five experts associated with the CIA and led by Hawke who are deployed when an operation goes bad to extract those in danger before it’s too late. Fox executives apparently thought there was too much action and not enough character development and substance, so there’s a chance it could still get ordered to series down the road. There will be plenty more news on new Fox series and other networks attempts for fall television coming soon so stay tuned.

Jesse McCartney to Star in Fox Drama LOCKE & KEY

Jesse McCartney (Greek) has signed on to play what is effectively the male lead in the Fox drama pilot Locke & Key, based on the comic book by Joe Hill.  According to Deadline, McCartney will play Ty, one of the three children of Nina Locke (Miranda Otto) — Sarah Bolger and Skylar Gaertner play the other two.

The story begins shortly after the murder of husband and father Rendell Locke.  The family return to Keyhouse, Rendell’s old family home in Massachusetts, where they are haunted by an evil entity.  Ty retreats into his music as a way to cope with the death of his father, which ought to show off McCartney’s particular skill set as an actor/songwriter.  I was charmed by McCartney in his guest arc on Greek, so I’m happy to see him at the center of a series I have high hopes for.

Steven Spielberg, Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), and partners Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Fringe) are producing.  Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) will direct the pilot.

Nick Stahl Joins the Cast of LOCKE & KEY TV Series

Though his film career hasn’t exactly been stellar since his appearance in Sin City, perhaps Nick Stahl will find more success on TV. At least his chances seem better now since Deadline reports the actor has just landed a role in Fox’s pilot for the TV series adaptation of Locke & Key, a comic book from Joe Hill. The series was originally being developed for this summer, but instead will be held until the fall TV season.

The story follows Nina Locke (Miranda Otto) and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey (Sarah Bolger), and Bode. After the brutal murder of Nina’s husband Rendell Locke, the four return to Keyhouse, his old family home in Massachusetts. There, they are pestered by an evil entity named Dodge that’s determined to hold the family hostage one way or another until it gets what it wants. Stahl will play Rendell’s younger brother Duncan Locke,  an art teacher who lives nearby and frequently visits Nina and the kids and strangely has few memories of his time growing up in Keyhouse. With Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci working with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks TV, I’m very interested in seeing this project come together.

TRUE BLOOD Promotes Jessica Tuck to Series Regular; Julia Louis-Dreyfus is VEEP for HBO; Miranda Otto Joins LOCKE & KEY

As HBO works on the upcoming fourth season of their hit vampire series True Blood, one recurring cast member just got promoted to series regular while three more ladies have also joined the cast. Deadline reports Jessica Tuck (who plays Nan Flannigan) will now be a series regular on the HBO drama along with Janina Gavankar who will play Luna, a super-sexy public school teacher and shapeshifter who is first seen attending an informal gathering with others like her. Someone should start a pool to figure out how long into her debut we’ll see her naked. In addition, Alexandra Brecekenridge (Dirt) and Vedette Lim (As the World Turns) have joined the series as recurring characters. Brecekenridge will play Daisy, a member of a wiccan group founded by Marnie (who we found out will be played by Fiona Shaw) while Lim will play Naomi, a fierce fighter who participates in underground cage matches for money. Production on the fourth season is slated to begin next week.

Series Pilots Land Directors Including Mark Romanek for LOCKE & KEY and Jonas Pate for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: BLOOD & CHROME

As the TV industry plows through development season, four potential new series just landed directors for their respective pilots. First, Mark Romanek, director of the much-buzzed about Never Let Me Go, will direct the pilot for the series adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic book Locke & Key. Combine his talent behind the camera with producers Steven Spielberg, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and writer Josh Friedman and it sounds like we’ve got one hell of a series on the way.

NBC Developing NASCAR Family Drama, HBO Knows Clyde Phillips’ NAKED TRUTH, and Fox Orders LOCKE & KEY Pilot

If following the speeding cars on the round NASCAR track just doesn’t immerse you in the thrills and drama of stock car racing, then NBC may have a solution. Deadline reports the network is developing The Crew, a testosterone-heavy underdog family drama set in the world of NASCAR. The series would follow the family of distinctly different brothers on a NASCAR racing team who, as individuals have their own lives and dreams, opportunities and problems but as a team share a singular goal: to be the best. Writer/producer Joe Pokaski (Heroes) is behind the project along with the full cooperation of NASCAR, so I wouldn’t expect too many jokes at the sport’s expense (no matter how badly I want them).

Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci to Add to Their Production Credits with LOCKE & KEY

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci must love to produce movies because it seems like we can’t go a week without hearing about some new project their shepherding into development.  Today, Latino Review reports that the latest film on their already-full plate is an adaptation of the comic book series Locke & Key, which was written by Joe Hill, aka The Spawn of Stephen King.  The series is a haunted house story where the family of a murdered paterfamilias moves into their estate, “Keyhouse”.  Keyhouse has many special rooms that can only be opened by special keys, while the “scary ass forces in the house start speaking to the padre’s killer,” and tell him to get off his lazy ass and murder the rest of the family.  I’m in an ongoing legal battle over the title, which I intended to use for my hilarious-yet-gripping weekly TV series about composer Francis Scott Key and philosopher John Locke teaming up to solve mysteries and fight crime.

In addition to producing Locke & Key, Kurtzman and Orci are also producing the following projects: Three TV projects for Fox Television, an adaptation of the documentary Racing Dreams, a remake of Hawaii Five-0 for CBS, the Masi Oka MMORPG movie The Defenders, and a movie based on the View-Master toy.  This is all in addition to their duties on Fringe and working on the script for Star Trek 2.  These boys are spreading themselves thinner than the plot they wrote for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

I’m just kidding.  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen didn’t have a plot.
