Legolas Poster for LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS

The upcoming LEGO sets for The Lord of the Rings are turning many of us into kids again. We previously brought you the poster for LEGO Aragorn, and today we’re happy to bring you the first poster for LEGO Legolas. Set against an appropriately ethereal background, LEGO Legolas sports a super cool sword, a nifty bow and arrow, and standard issue LEGO elf ears.

Orlando Bloom Talks THE THREE MUSKETEERS and Playing Legolas Again in THE HOBBIT

With director Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers opening October 21, Summit Entertainment held a big press junket in London and I got the chance to head across the pond to interview the cast.  Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic story, The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden and Mads Mikkelsen.  In the reboot, “the hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). They must stop the evil Richlieu (Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Jovovich).”  And unlike many films that have been post converted for a 3D release, the Musketeers was shot in 3D and it looks great.  For more on the film, here’s eight clips.

During my wide ranging interview with Bloom, he talked about getting involved in Musketeers and what it was like to play a villain, the amazing real world locations, 3D, the last video game he’s played, karaoke and you can see him try and flip the interview around on me.  In addition, Bloom talked about what it’s like to play Legolas again in Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit movies (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again) and when he’ll be filming.  Hit the jump to watch.

Over the past week, Warner Bros. has been slowly releasing pictures of all the dwarves in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  As a massive fan of the Lord of the Rings movies, my interest in The Hobbit borders on the crazy.  It’s easily one of my most anticipated movies and everything I’ve seen so far tells me we’re going to get something awesome. Exclusive: John Noble Talks LORD OF THE RINGS Extended Editions and FRINGE Season 3 and 4!

Last night, Warner Home Video held a big Lord of the Rings event at the West L.A. Best Buy to promote the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition on Blu-ray (here’s our review of the awesome set).  Shortly before the store opened to sell copies to the fans, I landed an interview with John Noble on the red carpet in front of the store.  While many of you might recognize Noble because of his awesome work as Dr. Walter Bishop on Fringe, he also played Denethor in both The Two Towers and The Return of the King.  As a huge fan of his work, it was really cool to get to talk to him.

During the interview we talked about making the Lord of the Rings, did he ever take anything home from set, which is his favorite film in the trilogy, and we also talked about Fringe season 3 and 4!  He revealed that they were rewriting the finale as they filmed it and he also dropped a few clues about next season.  Hit the jump to watch.

Watch the First Video Blog From the Set of THE HOBBIT

Peter Jackson has posted his first video blog from the set of The Hobbit and if you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings, you’re about to be very happy.  Included in the ten minute blog are the soundstages (including Bag End, Rivendell, and another set you might know…) the costume department, and you can watch as Jackson blocks a scene with Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and a huge number of Dwarfs.  In addition to everything I’ve already mentioned, just hearing Jackson talk about being back in Middle Earth and hearing the music made me so happy.  As many of you might know, the Lord of the Rings movies are some of my favorite films of all time.  The fact that we’re getting two Hobbit movies and it’s the same team of people behind the scenes, I cannot fully express how excited I am to see these films.  If you’re a LOTR fan, you really want to hit the jump.

Exclusive: Cate Blanchett Talks HOT FUZZ and THE HOBBIT

Earlier today I got to speak with Cate Blanchett for director Joe Wright’s new movie Hanna.  While I’m embargoed from saying what I thought about the film, I’m sure it will surprise no one that I thought Blanchett was fantastic as a ruthless intelligence operative.

While I’ll have the full interview online the week of April 8th, I had to post what she said about two of her most famous roles.  As most of you know, Blanchett played Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies.  With production now underway in New Zealand on the two Hobbit films, I asked her what kind of part she has and when does she start filming.  Unfortunately, she has yet to see a script, and wasn’t sure when she starts filming.

However, for fans of Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz, we discussed the tremendous research she did in playing Janine (the police investigator that’s Simon Pegg’s ex-girlfriend).  Since she wore a mask during her brief scene, you may not have known she was in it.  But I’d argue her performance is the only reason the film works.  It was that important.  Hit the jump to watch:

Exclusive: Liv Tyler Talks THE STRANGERS 2 and THE HOBBIT

With director James Gunn’s Super opening April 1, I was able to sit down with most of the cast this morning to talk about the film.  Next week I’ll be posting the full interviews, but I wanted to get what Liv Tyler said about The Strangers 2 and The Hobbit online today.

As some of you are aware, the first Strangers was made for under $10 million and it went on to make over $80 million at the worldwide box office.  With that kind of success, it’s no surprise that Rogue Pictures has been talking about making a sequel.  Early reports pegged Liv Tyler returning and that filming could begin this year.  However, Tyler told me, “I don’t know anything about…they’ve been talking about it forever and I know there is a screenplay that Bryan Bertino wrote which I’ve read part of but not the whole…I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen.  Bryan is not directing it and I’m not really in it.  I’d have to decide, but it’s not about me.”

Regarding The Hobbit, with a number of original cast members coming back, and yesterday’s press release saying that more cast members would be announced, I wondered if we might see Arwen (Tyler’s character in Lord of the Rings) return for even a few moments in either Hobbit film.  According to Tyler, “I haven’t heard from anybody.”  She also didn’t know that filming began today.  More after the jump.

Production Officially Begins on Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT; Plus Two New Images and the Official Synopsis

Though the two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit has been fraught with delays and difficulties, Warner Bros. has announced that production has finally started.  There were concerns that The Hobbit would leave New Zealand due to a labor strike, but the 3D movies will indeed be shot consecutively against the familiar backdrops from The Lord of the Rings.  As a prequel to the award-winning trilogy, The Hobbit takes place in Middle-earth 60 years prior to Frodo receiving The Ring. Instead, the two-part adaptation will follow Frodo’s Uncle Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he is swept up in a quest of his own.

Elijah Wood Confirmed for THE HOBBIT

Yesterday, we told you about the rumor that Elijah Wood would possibly be appearing in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films. For once, it looks like the rumors may be true. Wood is apparently now set to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins in both films. We now even know in what capacity he will appear, but since many of you want to remain spoiler-free, we’ll leave that until after the jump.

Wood joins Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Orlando Bloom on the growing list of actors from the Lord of the Rings trilogy that are reportedly in talks to appear in Jackson’s Hobbit films. Hit the jump for the details of Frodo’s involvement.

Peter Jackson to Shoot THE HOBBIT Films in 3D with 30 New RED EPIC Cameras

Though I’m remiss to say it for fear of jinxing the project, it looks like Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films really are moving ever closer to production. With the issues over filming in New Zealand settled and a great deal of casting recently confirmed, filming is gearing up to begin at last. And now, Jim Jannard, the owner and founder of RED DIGITAL CINEMA, has announced that Jackson will be using the company’s soon to be released EPIC digital cameras to shoot the two film adaptation in 3D.  Engadget reports that the new camera has 5k resolution, is able to shoot up to 128 frames per second, and has a new HDRx mode “for the highest dynamic range of any camera ever made.” All this is to say that RED has produced a camera that is considerably smaller, lighter, and more powerful than any on the market today.  Jackson had this to say about using the cameras:

I find the picture quality [of RED cameras] appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo.

Jackson will reportedly be using at least thirty of the new EPIC cameras on the production. For more on the technology, and what we know about The Hobbit so far, hit the jump.

Hobbiton To Be a Permanent Tourist Attraction

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, your dreams are about to come true. The Hobbiton sets being built for The Hobbit are going to be permanent, and open to visitors once the movie is done filming. So, according to stuff.co.nz, anyone could join the perpetual celebration at the Party Tree, and then mosey down the lane to The Green Dragon, where Bilbo met Thorin Oakshield to begin his career as a burglar.  Afterwards, you could even stroll across Bywater bridge. Hobbiton offered some of the most idyllic scenery and images in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and is sure to become an extremely popular tourist attraction.  For  more on this and The Hobbit, continue after the jump.

Rally Video Supports Filming of THE HOBBIT in New Zealand

Martin Freeman’s recent casting as Bilbo Baggins has been the lone bright spot in the rather troubled preproduction of The Hobbit. However said casting news does little to lessen the very real and troubling battle between Warner Brothers and The Australian Media, Entertainment and Art’s Alliance – previously covered here and here. The dispute puts The Hobbit production at a standstill and would most likely result in the production moving away from New Zealand, home of The Lord of The Rings films.

Warner Brothers executives are visiting New Zealand this Monday, October 25^th to presumably make a final decision on whether or not the film can be shot there. Rallies are beginning to be held In New Zealand urging for an end to the union dispute.   To help raise awareness, Hunter Abbey has created a video mixing real footage with lines of dialogue from Lord of the Rings.  It’s a pretty awesome edit and definitely worth checking out.  Hopefully these problems can be worked out because everyone around the world associates New Zealand with Lord of the Rings.  It would be shame to move production to another country due to a few people causing problems.   Hit the link to see the video.

A Map of the Best Movies of All Time

Now here’s a subway we’d all like to take.  It seems a website called Vodkaster has created “The Best Movies Of All Time Map” much in the vein of those Lord of the Rings Flow Charts/Maps that circulated around the web a few months ago (we missed it).  It’s incredibly cool and detailed, even if the stops along the way don’t exactly make the most sense.

Starting with a series of “Universally Acclaimed Masterpieces” in the middle, such as Seven Samuari, Star Wars and Citizen Kane, it then branches off into sub genres such as the broad “Drama” and “Comedy,” to more specific ones like “Masterpiece about show business” and “Drama about tolerance.”
